Hot backups for essbase planning databases

Hi gurus
Can please tell me best advice for making hot backups of our essbase planning databases for disaster recoveries?
We try doubletake but files are locked unless essbase is put in read-only mode.
Any good tools for this? Certified stuff? Heard maybe VBE?
TIA
M.

Hi,
First of all have you read the document of backing up essbase :- http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10530_01/doc/epm.931/hfm_backup.pdf
If you are taking a backup while essbase is running then you will need to put the databases into read only mode, this can be done by using a maxl script and once again to take it out of read only mode.
There are lots of 3rd party applications out there for backing up file structures, it all depends on what you want it to do and how much you want to pay.
If it is a small installation you could even script it yourself depensing on your knowledge to back up files and copy them to a san or backup drive.

  • HOT Backups for smaller databases

Should we schedule hot backups for small databases? the database size is around 1.5 GB. We have already scheduled daily FULL DB Export.

  • Is possible to recover hot.backup of a nonarchive database?

I have read on several books that hot backups must be done on a database set with ARCHIVELOG mode, but it is physically possible to recover a hot-backup of a database that was in NOARCHIVELOG mode. Obviously some transactions would be lost, but it is possible to do it?
I'm trying to do it unsuccesfully (when I try to startup the data base he asme for recovering the database and then always ask me for a archive log file.......)
    Thanks

What you have red is correct.
You can't do hot backup on non-archivelog database.

  • Backup for Sql Azure Database

    Hi,
We are using the automatic backup option available with Sql Azure , but it is not working for us and throwing the some error. When we raised the ticket for same we had received reply saying this feature is not supported by MS.
Could you please advise what is best approch for taking the backup for Sql Azure Database.
    Regards...

Point in time restore is a great feature to sit along side automated export but not a replacement. Automated Export allows us to keep long term backups (30, 60, 90 days) which are important and also allows the ability to import to my local server a backup
from a previous day for testing or support reasons.
RedGate provide a backup service as well but I was hoping by using PIT restore and automated backup together I would no longer need to pay for that third-party service.

  • Improving backup performance for Essbase / Planning

    Hi all
I am trying to improve out backup performance and limit downtime for our Planning applications. Currently we are running 11.1.1.3 and an instance of 11.1.2.1. We are doing your standard cold backups on the Essbase side (shut down, copy files) then we do a level 0 export out for a logical backup. Downtime is getting a bit restrictive and the business wants a more DR friendly solution.
Has anyone tried any of these options and if so please let me know how they worked
    1. Use BCV technology to snap off a copy of the essbase databases to limit downtime of a normal copy.
    2. HTBase backup utility, demo looked good, is it proven
    3. Transaction log mode with hot backups.
Im just trying to weigh the best options and see what is proven out there
    any help would be great

    Hi Mike,
You can take backup using "Archive database " functionality. While data is being archived , the database is put into read only mode. Only thing is that you wont be able to write data into the cube at that time, but it might increase the time for which you take backup as data archive backs up the wole database with all the dataabse.
You can also use the replay BSO feature by enabling transaction logging.
    See if this Helps.

  • Hot Backup for oracle database?

    Dear all,
I want to change Cold Backup to Hot Backup. Does anyone how to do Hot Backup and has some simple document I can follow? If the database is running in ARCHIVELOG mode, is the size grow very fast or other effect will overcome?
    Please advice,
    Amy

I want to change Cold Backup to Hot Backup. Does
anyone how to do Hot Backup and has some simple
document I can follow?online/hot backup don’t need to shutdown the database we can put the database in backup mode and then start taking backup even though users database activity read/write data going on. This strategy useful if ours database goes for 24x7.
For online/hot backup the database should be in archive mode.
I hope you know how to turn on archive. Before turning on check the archive on or not.
    SQL> archive log list
    Database log mode              Archive Mode
    Automatic archival             Enabled
    Archive destination            USE_DB_RECOVERY_FILE_DEST
    Oldest online log sequence     1
Next log sequence to archive   2
    Current log sequence           2
SQL> you may also check it by connecting to database as sys
    SQL> select log_mode from v$database;
    LOG_MODE
    ARCHIVELOG
SQL> if yours database is not in archive mode then first enable archive, please before turning on the archive take cold backup.
    SQL>shutdown immediate
    SQL>startup mount
    SQL>alter database archivelog
    SQL>alter database open;
    SQL> archive log list
Now you are able to take hot/online backup ,its upto you you use user managed backup and recovery or use RMAN oracle own shipped free tool for backup and recovery ,however my recommendation would goes for RMAN.
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/A97630_01/server.920/a96572/toc.htm
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/availability/htdocs/rman_overview.htm
ARCHIVELOG mode, is the size grow very fast or other
effect will overcome? However, the growing size pace either fast or slow everyday can be impractical it alls depends on activity of yours database operation. You will have to observe it yourself by turning on archive log its vary database to database activity.

  • To calculate the size of backup for a particular database in RMAN catalog

    Hi ALL,
Could you please guide me how I can calculate the size of backup data for a particular database in Recovery Catalog, if I am using Tapes as my backup media for recovery catalog.
    Regards
    Harpreet Singh

    Hi,
I am not Up to the mark of your question ..
If you see the V$log you can get it.. Size of the redo logs can be determined either by examining the file system size or by reading the BYTES column on the V$LOG view. Then Check the number of redo Logs avaialble checked whether they are mirrored or etc., Combining the two figures we have a total redo log data at peak in one day. This is the amount of data that any backup facility or storage of Archive Redo Logs would have to take into account. This figure should be mitigated against the fact that manual switching of redo logs means that not all archived redo logs will be the full size.

  • Using Cold Backup for a 42GB database

I plan to have a Cold backup for a 42GB db (v 8.1.6). Since it's size is quite large, i am not sure how to back it up quicker.
I did a trial copy for a 3GB file, it took almost 9 hours to finish.
    Please help!!!
    Thanks a lot :)
    Tracey

I did a trial copy for a 3GB file, it took almost 9 hours to finish.Wouaw, what is your network ?
You can copy the files in local, restart db, and move files on an other drive trough network, like this, the service is not down for a long time.

  • Backup for SQL 2008R2 database taking extremely long!

Runnig DPM SP1 on hostserver  backing up over to a different network. Only failing for SQL 2008 r2, where it takes a very very long time. It takes so many hours, that the job even laps its own self. Is  there any other factors that can influence
this, leaving network, disk I/O and size of database on the side? Anyone with same problem? any solutions? Pretty desperate here. Thanks in advance!

    Hello Samir,
Volume does not have any encryption or dedup. The actual first backup took over 20 hours. This is with dpm creating the allocated the volume for the backup. And then every backup sycronisation took about 7-8 hours. SQL database is about 1.3 TB. I understand
this big, but still they has to be another reason to why it would take way long.
    thanks in advance!

  • Hot Backup  Mannual Pls review for 9i

    Hi All,
I am a forms developer for 9 years and new to dba/backup. I have to review a mannual hot backup for a 9i database in Solaris.
    There 2 scripts
    1) Script to backup all data files (system, users...) runs once in a day and Ftp to a ftp server
    2) Script which runs every one hour which takes a backup of redo log files, archive files and control file. And this is ftp to a ftp server.
Q1 Does this good enough to recover the data up to last one hour ?
Q2 Here is my Script 2. Is this correct?
sqlplus "/ as sysdba" << EOF
    alter system switch logfile;
    EOF
    # Sleep for sometime, till the log file is complete
    sleep 60
sqlplus "/ as sysdba" << EOF
    ! rm -Rf /backup/OHotBackup/XX/arch
    alter database backup controlfile to '/backup/OHotBackup/XXctrl.ctl';
    ! cp -r /opt/oracle/product/9.2.0/dbs/arch /backup/OHotBackup/XX
    ! mv /backup/OHotBackup/XX/ctrl.ctl /backup/OHotBackup/XX/arch/ctrl.ctl
    ! cp -r /opt/oracle/product/9.2.0/oradata/XX/*.log /backup/XX/arch

    select to_char(sysdate,'mm-dd-yyyy:hh:mm:ss.ss') endtime from dual;
    disconnect

Thanks in Advance. I read that RMAN backup is better than mannual but for some reasons my company is using this script.

  • How to hot backup 11.1.1.3 Planning application

I readed Backup and Recovery Guide. But still have no ideal about how to hot backup for planning application.
Have any metrial talk about this or it's impossible in real world. Thanks!

From version 11.1 on the "hot" backup method is:
    - (1) archive the database to a file (in this time the database is read only) every night or weekend
    - (2) enable transaction logs
    - (3) backup these files (archive and logs) regularly
    If there's an issue:
    - (1) Restore from archive (gives you a downtime)
    - (2) Replay transaction logs until before the issue occured
The database would available for read 24x7 - writing will be disabled only during backups.
Backup and Restore are high performance actions that will depend on disk and cpu speed. A normal Server will do 20MB/sec.
    OK?

  • How to restore RMAN hot backup to another database on another server?

I want to know how to restore RMAN hot backup from production server to another database on a testing server.
The hot backup is from a database named PROD on the production server
The database to be restored with the hot backup is TEST on the testing server. There is already a PROD database on the testing server and this PROD database must be kept.
I have read some threads about changing initTEST.ora to PROD to restore such backup but (I think) will not work in my case since I already have a PROD database on the testing server.
The version is 11gR2 on Linux but the compatible parameter is set to 10.2.0.1.0.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi,
