Hot display iMac 24"

I am sitting here in Adelaide and the outside temperature is 40 degrees C, inside my house it is around 30 degrees C, warm but bearable.
My Mac display seems to get very hot and on days like this it is hard to work with. I downloaded a temperature monitor widget and got a reading of 73C [163 F] for the Northbridge Heatsink.
That seems very hot to me, is it normal?

G'day Mate!
I live in the tropical part of Mexico (the Yucatan) and we are on the same temperature range you mention. There was a period of time last year when INSIDE the house temperature was above 40º... i used to have at home an iMac 24" 3.06 and yes indeed it got VERY hot and uncomfortable... i happen to work at the same distance as you from the display... my solution was to bring a cheap standing electric fan, there's a ceiling fan at my home office but it simply can't provide enough cooling for the iMac and myself... so the standing fan blew directly to the iMac... and it indeed cooled the iMac quite fine, after a couple of weeks with that heat i took the iMac to the office where there's air conditioning. I was afraid the iMac would severely decrease its useful life working constantly at that high temp.
If you do not have a cooler place to work i strongly suggest to get yourself one of those fans... or two... one for you and one for the iMac...
In the oher hand... or on top of it... you can install smcFanControl http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23049 and set the fans to start running at a lower temperature...
i did that with my MacBook Pro and also got a ventilated laptop stand (usb powered fan below) and it keeps it quite fresh...
ooh seems like there's a better fan control for iMacs...

  • IPhone 6 battery hot, display not working anymore

    Hello everyone,
got my iPhone 6 64GB on Friday, everything was working fine until an hour ago. Phone got really hot, display became black and that was it. Phone can be connected to iTunes, makes sounds, but nothing else works anymore. Any ideas what happened or how it can be repaired?
    Cheers

My suggestion is to call and Apple store and make a Genius appointment ASAP.  If it's defective, they will replace it.

Difficut to say why it won't work, but my guess is your vintage iMac (about 2007) was never designed to output via HDMI. Your adapter appears correct (thanks for the Amazon link) so if you want to persist, you can contact Amazon and request and exchange to check it. But I suspect you will need to use VGA or if your TV has it DVI which would mean using a mini-DVI to DVI adapter.
One last thought is you could invest in an Apple TV and then do it wirlessly. That would work too but requires and AppleTV to accomplish it, of course you can use the AppleTV for streaming other data too including video, photos, music etc....

  • Trying to download Elements on my new Retina display IMAC but I get an error box saying the certificate doesn't match.

I trying to download the trial for Elements but a dialogue box popped up and said the certificates don't match. What does that mean? Does it suggest that if I bought Elements that I couldn't download it? I just got a new Retina display iMAC and I'm trying to transfer the software but my older version of Elements 10 wouldn't install. So I thought maybe time to upgrade to 13 but I can't even download the trial. Any suggestions?

It means OS X doesn't like the security certificate for the page. You can try downloading from here as an alternative:

  • 2nd Display & iMac w/ 2 Different Sets of Content from Same iMac

Can I do this?  (How can I do this?) I'd like to connect a second display to my iMac and use the iMac to generate content (like live feeds or video content from CNN.com) to play on the second display while I "work" on the iMac and its screen. Thus, each display have its own content--but the content is generated by the one iMac.  Could I use a HD tv as the second display?
    Thanks for your guidance.
    Bill

Depends on the iMac, but some of them do support this.
Look yours up at  http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/index-imac.html  and look for the section about displays and 2nd display support under your model.
With the second display connected to the appropriate port, you use your Displays System Preferences to configure them. If you choose "mirror" both displays show the same thing. If you choose to not mirror, you can have an "extended desktop where you can place different windows on different monitors and do exactly what you want to do. AN HD TV might be usable but you have to look up what your iMac can handle in terms of pixels and resolution and compare that to your HD TV specs. You can certainly buy inexpensive monitors to use if your HD TV is compatible.

  • Picture overlap on external display imac 24

    Hello everyone,
I have my Samsung TV connected to my iMac 24" (early 2008) so I can watch movies etc...
When maximising a window on the TV it cause parts of the window to overlap the screen. So the close, minimise and maximise bar is hidden and cannot be viewed.
Can someone point in the direction as to how I can calibrate the display to fill the screen rather than overlap?
    Thanks!

Never mind. It was a TV issue, I had it set to 16:9! Changed it to 'scan' and works perfectly.

Can I use appleTV to display the screen contents of my iMac on my TV screen?

Actually yes you can. Don't know what the guy above is talking about. I use it all the time. Just click the airplay icon in top right hand corner of your screen that will appear when there is an Apple Tv on the same network as your imac.

  • Display iMac 27" with gray bar

Why Apple continues to deliver iMac 27 "with the defect in the gray band at the bottom of the monitor?????????
Why not try them before sending them to customers???????????

Yes, the 10,1 is a late 2009 model. If it will work depends on whether the pc graphics card will supply Mini DisplayPort compliant signals.
Here is some information on using the 27" iMac in Target Display mode:

  • Display iMac Late 2009 color profile questions:

My friend dropped his mid 2010 iMac 21.5 inch desktop computer over for me update to Yosemite because I have a very fast connection.
    I have a late 2009 iMac 21.5 inch.
When side by side, I noticed that my display is quite dim compared to his. Also, the "white" seems dull and grey/yellow. ( I shot this photo with my iPod Touch of the displays side by side.)
Both displays are set at the highest brightness.
I took note of the color profiles of each.
My question is this: Can I make my display look somewhat brighter? Or is it different because of something else? His iMac is so much brighter. I'd like to brighten things up on mine if possible.
Below, please click the image- on the left is the 2010 iMac, on the right, the 2009.
the 2010 iMac says 21.5 inch (1920x1080) ATI Radeon HD 4670
the 2009 iMac says 21.5 inch (1920x1080) NVIDIA GeForce 9400
Something tells me that I can't calibrate it to look like that, but, I figured I'd toss the question out there. I had no idea how yellow/grey my display looked until today.

A notable peculiarity of Thunderbolt is that it uses exactly the same connector as Mini Display Port, and that's not all. The Thunderbolt connector also carries Mini Display Port video signals. That means you can plug a Mini Display Port video cable/adapter in to a Thunderbolt connector and your monitor will work.
If you plan to do other things with your Thunderbolt connector and don't want it wasted on a monitor, you can also choose an HDMI --> DVI adapter, which for your purposes will be functionally equivalent.
You can even use both at the same time.

  • LONG Time Machine restore to new retina display iMac

Received new iMac 4 Ghz i7, 3 Tb drive retina display, and elected to transfer my information from Time Machine that is on a 1 Tb USB drive.  Before doing this, I used this drive to restore a repaired older machine, and the transfer of all materials (about 900 Gb) took about 11 hours.  On the new machine, it has been running for 12 hours, and shows nearly 70 hours remaining (it is stuck on the Transfer the Applications phase).  I watched it for a while and the amount of time is incrementing, not decreasing.  Seems like an unreasonable time interval.  Anyone have similar experience or any advice?
    Thanks in advance.
    - Mike

Sorry - I have had a dual TM backup system for several years.  My machine hard disk DIED and was replaced.  I also purchased the new computer at the same time.  There was no method of "test" except that I have previously restored onto the old machine.  The two backup TM disks are identical and two weeks ago I verified that I could "read" each of them (anticipating a clean install of Yosemite).
I used TM #1 and restored the old machine within 11 hours.  At same time, I hooked up TM #2 to new machine, and it is still cranking along.
Both Yosemite installs were done by Apple;  I have other machines that I have clean installed Yosemite using a bootable USB stick so that option is alive.  I anticipate that you are right and that TM #2 has somehow failed in the middle of the restore.
    Thanks for your assistance.

  • Hot 27" iMac

Hi, Just upgraded to the new 2010 27" iMac - beautiful bit of kit, you don't realise how big it is until you get it home.
Anyway everything seems to be working as planned, migrated all my data over without any problems. I've noticed that the back of the new iMac seems very hot, especially when compared to my old iMac. Neither the base at the front and the glass monitor are hot, just seem to be the back and sides of the machine. Is this normal?
    Thanks
    Andrew

I'm not crazy about the HDD at 53. It's not at the point where it will do any immediate damage, but long term it will probably suffer from slow roasting. I'd like to see it stay below 47-48 tops. Nothing one can do if the room temp is hot, but in cool weather mine doesn't get much above 44-45. The other temps look OK.
You might want to get smcFanControl to perhaps ratchet up the fans maybe three hundred rpm and see if that brings it down a bit.
I also run a small, cheap 6" clip-on fan at the back of my 21.5 aimed at the hottest area which helps to dissipate the case heat.

  • Wrong Target Display iMac

I am using a Mid-2010 27 inch iMac as my main machine and I also have a 21.5 inch 2009 Late-2009 iMac. I'd like to use the 27 inch as my main computer with the 21 inch as the secondary display, so I purchased a double male ended Mini Display cable, whenever I plug them in, the 27 inch iMac becomes the secondary display to the 21 inch, I hit Command-F2 on the 27 and it goes back to normal, but then I hit Command-F2 on the 21 and nothing happens. It seems as if I'm only able to make my 27 iMac an additional screen for my 21 inch, but not the other way around. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

  • How Hot is Too Hot 20" iMac (Mid 07)

I have a new 20" iMac 2.4 GHz that came with the Apple installed 1 GB of RAM. I realize it is normal for the top edge to be warm. I wanted to know how warm so I installed the Temperature Monitor v4.2 and it currently reads 123.8 F. Is this normal or hot? How hot is too hot and what will happen if I install another memory module?
Is there a better utility or something from Apple to track temperature?

Ps: How do I add an icon showing one of the new iMac?

+How hot is too hot and what will happen if I install another memory module?+
185 F is too hot, but unless you've got your iMac sitting in direct sunlight or are operating it at the extreme upper end of the ambient temperature operating range at 95 F, it would be highly unlikely to reach that temperature since the fans do an excellent job of cooling.
The whole point of Apple's switching to Intel processors was to provide the same power as the Power PC processors, but at much lower temperatures due to consumers not using air conditioning to such a wide extent as do businesses.
Installing another memory module will not make much impact on most internal temperatures, except it will probably tend to lower the hard drive temperature since with more memory there won't be as much swapping of data back and forth between memory and hard drive.
Computers have always worked faster in a cooler environment rather than in a hotter environment, so if your environment is hot and you want to give your Mac some help, turn on the air.
As to the topic, it is not marked as solved, but is marked as answered.

  • Troubleshooting with the display Imac 27" i7

Suddenly the display turned grey... and the blue and the off. When I restart, it won't... and the suddenly it will. Right now the display seems to be fine, but in a moment it can turn off...
I do not know if it is a hardwareproblem or software but I think it is the last... I cannot make a controller disc in disctool which makes me think that... have anyone any experience with this issue??

WIl everything migrate seamlessly [using Time Machine]?
There may be one quirk you could run into, but I'm not positive. And that is with regard to the account you define for the new iMac. If you first define the primary user account on the new iMac, for example, "Matthew Palm" and matthewpalm, and that is the same as the account name on your old iMac, the installer will refuse to allow you to restore to the new iMac until you create a new account such as Matt Palm. That happened to me but I think it may have been because I declined the first opportunity to restore and defined my account etc. before I later tried to restore from Time Machine.
I think you can avoid the problem with the correct timing of your restore from Time Machine. If I recall correctly, once you select your language after you first boot the new machine, the installer will immediately ask if you want to restore from Time Machine. If you say, "Yes" at that point I think you'll be fine.
I said, "No" and had to live with this extra permanent account. At least the installer warned to be careful how this primary account was named because it can't be changed.
