Hot, hot screen...

I have a first generation 20" Intel iMac and on occasion (usually gaming in Windows - bootcamp), I can touch the top of the screen and it can be extremely hot, worryingly so, in fact I gets to the stage that I point a desk fan at it to help cool it down!
Are high temperatures behind the screen likely to cause the screen itself many problems?

I had a 20" iMac G5 2.1GHz, which is suppose to run hotter than the newer Intel versions. After video editing or playing a game, the computer would be hot and fans blowing out hot air. The components are made to handle the temperatures.
The only time you may have an issue is if your fan stops working and things overheat. But your computer should automatically lock up or shut off before any damage would occur.
Blowing a fan may cool it somewhat, but the back of the iMac at the top is where the air blows OUT while the air is taken in from the bottom of the iMac. Make sure (1) nothing is blocking the vents on the bottom and (2) I would not point the fan at the top back of the iMac so as to blow air in the iMac at the same point where the air is trying to escape from the internal fans.

grey screen no apple followed by blue screen with vertical lines. Graphics and logic board replaced <6 months ago. What to do? I held down shift, it gets HOT HOT and makes noises. (for safety mode) followed by a blank grey screen and blue screen. Then tried the other way (sorry, I think  it's command alt delete? I don't remember) and it turned from grey (no apple symbol) to blue blank. Then third time, grey followed by blue with vertical lines, not blocky clear lines that you can see if you are close to it.
    Thanks for any help!

You have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked out.

  • Hot corner screen shutoff -- what am i seeing?

When I put the mouse in the hot corner set to shut off the monitor on my Macbook, it appears that the crystals in the LCD are actually zeroing as well, so that the monitor is truly shut off. This would differ from dimming the LED backlight till it's off, as you can actually see that the image is still in the monitor. (Put a light behind the Mac logo with the backlight off, computer running, and you'll see what I mean)
The funny thing is it looks like I can actually see the LCD clearing the screen as it happens a split second after the backlight shuts off when using the hot corner.

Scott and Raehan: I see your points, but I think we are all just guessing which words in Apple's publicity are significant and what they mean. I don't find either of your interpretations any more persuasive than my own, and any or all of us could easily be wrong.
Somewhere in one of these threads is a post in which someone figured out a way to determine (beyond what one can read from its color profile) who manufactured his display and what model it is. What we need is for people who own the new antiglare and the old matte display to use that method to identify the units in question.

  • Hot News Screen Saver

    Apple Fans,
Here is the setup and followup question.
I have my powerbook screen saver set up to display the "Hot News"/RSS Visualizer. Therefore, when it is time to switch over to the screen saver the news pops up on, I quess what you would call, a rotating type of display and if i want to access the information shown at that time I touch the coresponding number (ex. Apple launches Quicktime 8... press "2" for more info), blah, blah, blah, you know.
Anyway... the background when this happens is blue. How can I change the color background?
I have gone to the screen saver section and I don't see a place in there that this can be done.
Thanks in advance for any helpful hints!

    Tuttle,
no, i didn't know that. thanks for the info. i think the rss feed/screensaver was a great idea that apple came up with. i'm sure its got a few fans out there.
i must admit though that i am a bit suprised that i can't change the color. oh well.
    thanks for the help anyway.

I just downloaded iTunes v.8.0.1. iTunes screen cocmes up hot pink, flashes to correct white screen, then flashes back and stays hot pink. Side bars are dark gray and illegible. Any clues how to correct and get back the normal white screen?

Change your Display settings in Windows...Right click on your Desktop, Properties, us 32 bit, Then it will be like magic and go far far away!

  • Hot corners: screen saver

    Dear Applelovers,
Happy Seasons Greetings to you and yours.
I continue to have a problem enabling 'hot corners' to work. I have tried, particularly in the Screen Saver section of System Preferences, but no luck.
I am able to selct the hot corners feature by clicking the box, but the corners no longer seem to respond when it comes to starting the screen saver. I am able to put the display to sleep as well as other selections, but enabling the corners to allow the screen saver to begin is a no-go.
Looked around the forums and elsewhere online; though this seems to be a "known issue", I have yet to discover a fix for it.
    Thoughts?

I think what you want to do is in System Preferences > Security > under the General Tab. You set this up to require a password after the screen saver kicks in.

  • Mac gets hot then screen go to sleep and will not restart until cools down

Ever since I downloaded Lion on my mac I have noticed when I leave my mac while not using it it gets really warm.Next it goes into sleep mode and will not wake up with a tap of any button so I have to wait for it to cool down to restart.I have read other peoples problems with Lion could this be another glitch with the new operating system download?

I have been getting the black screen after waking. My screen is not set to sleep, so I don't know if it's related. Some discussion of the problem here:

  • HOT HOT HOT HOT!!! Mac Book Pro Retina, Mid 2012 with 2 external Displays HOT HOT HOT HOT!!!

    Hi,
i think i have a serious heat problem and i am a bit afraid of melting the mac book (It happend before with an older mac book pro, graphic card melted...yes, it did...)
    i own a Retina, Mid 2012
Processor  2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)
in use with 2 external Monitors, one TB Display and one Eizo (27" same resolution as TB) via display port and doing lots of stats with Stata and R on it and it get hot like **** (temperature monitor says around 95-100° degrees on graphic processor diod and around 80° on the chip.
furthermore, it creates kind of random kernel tasks with % CPU usage up to 500% (i read somewhere it does it to keeps internal cooling up...(??) ) and it is getting really slow... almost unusable.
Is this still healthy and the way it should be when i use it with 2 monitors?
Will i ruin it by using it like this all day long?
Apple says it could handle two displays. I think it can`t without killing itself on the long run (if you still USE it)
any ideas what to do? i allready use a cooling pad for it (cheap revoltec) but it does not really help, the macs and the pads fans run like crazy, its pretty noisy and gets really hot anyway
    Any experiences with 2 displays?
is there anything i can do about it?
    Better cooling pad solutions???
    Any other solutions??
    Any ideas welcome
    Thanks & Best
    Franz

Hm, i cannot reproduce the kernel_task thing right now, but this is my temp after working with 2 screens for 10 minutes. is this normal?
100° cpu, 96° on the diode, and 78 on GPU chip? it even was 82 once.
when do i reach critical limits?
    apple?

  • Brand New MacBook Pro - HOT HOT HOT To hot for lap

I have had my MacBook for only 24 hours and i think something is wrong.
Its so hot on the bottom i cant put it on my lap. i bet its at least 90 degrees.
is this ok. It cant be.

Read your User Guide around Page 62 - Safety:
*Handling your MacBook Pro* Set up your MacBook Pro on a stable work surface that
allows for adequate air circulation under and around the computer. Do not operate
your MacBook Pro on a pillow or other soft material, as the material can block the
airflow vents. Never place anything over the keyboard when operating your computer.
Never push objects into the ventilation openings.
The bottom of your MacBook Pro may become very warm during normal use. If your
MacBook Pro is on your lap and gets uncomfortably warm, remove it from your lap and
place it on a stable work surface.

  • Logic X on Macbook Pro Retina... "feeling hot, hot"?

I recently made an impulse purchase on a Macbook Pro Retina 2.7Ghz Quad core i7, in order to ease my transition to Logic X & Pro Tools 11. I figured with a Flash drive & 16Gb of memory that this would be a nice quiet machine... but unfortunately no. I'm quite shocked at how HOT these i7 processors run - in idle mode, the machine ticks over at 41c (istat menus), but as soon as you load a blank project in Logic X & press play, the machine ramps up to 92-93c. Consequently the fans kick in to an annoying level... & don't subside until you quit Logic. The Macbook has even touched 100c - which seems pretty hot, considering thermal shutdown is 110c. (I'm following all the guidelines on keeping the machine well ventilated, & only running it with the power supply).
I've read many similar posts in other parts of the apple forum, but I'm interested in anybody else's experiences with Logic X on a Macbook Pro Retina. Is this behaviour normal, or do I have a lemon?!! Benchmarks are impressive for the machine : 64 tracks vs 30 on my 2006 Mac Pro (Quad 3.0ghz/10.6.8/Logic 9.1.8). http://www.evan.se/logicprobenchmark/Logic_Multicore_Benchmark_Test.html
Another word of warning on Thunderbolt... it's very expensive, & you'll need it for practically everything. Once you've added a hub, cables & all the various adapters you'll need (firewire, ethernet, DVI, etc), your looking at the best part of £375/$600.... & that's not even including a thunderbolt 7200 rpm Hard Drive (£250 minimum). Sadly there's very few thunderbolt devices (apart from high end Raid HD's) that have more than one port, so daisy-chaining is not an option, & a hub is essential. Worse still, the current maximum length for thunderbolt is 3m which makes it very difficult to place a noisy mac or hard drive in another room. The new Mac Pro may be the quietest computer on the planet, but what's the point if you can't get hard drives out of earshot? (There are apparently fibre-optic versions in the pipeline that will exceed these lengths, but when?)
So folks... opinions - is your Macbook Pro Retina whisper quiet with Logic? Mine might have to go back...

    Hi Mate,
I've got a non-retina MBP i5, and it's not behaving like that, so no way should yours be.  Can't hear it at all until it really comes under load.  But even then it's relatively quiet.  Quite concerning that it's happening to you with nothing loaded up.
Something is obviously taking up cpu power just by having the audio engine running, have you checked OSX Activity monitor and checked where your processor(s) are being used?
Also, check your audio options and make sure the audio buffer isn't set ridiculously low.
Agree that Apple expansion options are expansive - However, at least they're working on getting the software reduced, Logic X being an example of that.

  • Hot, Hot, HOT PSPKFU-06X011

I have a P850 which I bought last April to specifically run S3 (Sims 3) games.  I thought, after researching different options, I made a good choice.
Recently I've noticed when I run S3 the right lower corner - side gets seemingly hot enough to fry eggs on.  I don't know anything to do with how pc's work short of turning it on, navigating tabs/browsers, keeping it updated and tapping keys.
The heat worries me and I notice this experience (as far as I can recall) primarily running the game.  My concern is burning out something in the system to the point of inoperation.
I hear that some cards are fine running hot, I cannot find anything about the nVidia card running this way.  The nVidia site says to approach the manufacturer from which I purchased the system, so . .  here I am.
I've heard 'get a cooling pad with a fan', but isn't that putting a band-aid on the symptom and ignoring the cure?  It makes me anxious doing this.  The other factor which unsettles me about that is the fact that the fan has to get power from somewhere - some plug into the system, others into the wall which pretty much diminishes the portability use of the system.
Is it ok to run it when it's hot?  Do I need to increase the memory (8 mb) to remedy this?
    I'm really concerned about this.
I don't have money to give it to a repair shop or send it in.
I've begun to have it sit on ice packs in an attempt to cool it down.. when I play (just wondering if it's needed)
Sincerest thanks to those who know!

When a laptop gets too hot, it'll turn itself off to avoid damage. You shouldn't have anything to worry about. However, laptops will begin to run hotter over time as dust accumulates inside them. If you do start having serious heat issues, it can help a little to blow out the fans and vents (with the laptop off) with a can of compressed air. What helps more is having it serviced and professionally cleaned.

  • HOT HOT HOT!!!

    Hello everyone,
I have a sticky situation on my hands and I have no idea how to fix it. So I am asking all of you to give me some help if possible.
I believe my whole computer has gone crazy. When I boot up my computer and it trys to load Windows XP PRO, it restarts. I just installed Win XP pro and it has only been able to completly start up once. It said it was reconizing new hardware even though I already installed all my drivers for my hardware before installiation.
When I start up my computer I am able to get into BIOS. so I checked ot my PC Health and I was shocked. My CPU was clockin at 248F(better get the sunblock )! thats 155C; If it were accually that hot my CPU would be melting. My system was about 95F. What is going on here? Did I buy the devil's processor?(please respond as if you were writing to the village idoit, I am only a kid you know)

As iyongski wrote, trying to run the system without any type of thermal compound between the CPU heatspreader and the HSF (heatsink/fan) is a bad thing.
The CPU heatspreader and the bottom of the HSF, though appearing to be smooth, actually have microscopic hills and valleys.  Because those hills and valleys do not match up, the heatspreader and the HSF actually end up with a lot of tiny air gaps between them.  Air is a poor conductor of heat, so the thermal interface material is there to fill in the tiny hills and valleys to better conduct the heat from CPU to HSF.
The retail boxed P4 heatsink comes with a 'phase change' thermal pad on it which sort of 'melts' when heated up.  If the HSF is installed correctly the first time, this works okay.
However, if the HSF wasn't installed correctly or if it's since been removed, that thermal material is going to be messed up and won't be of much use.  In which case one would need to remove the HSF, thoroughly clean off the old thermal material from the HSF and CPU, and then apply some new TIM.

  • HOT HOT HOT Overheating

My iPhone (1st gen) keeps getting HOT to the touch whenever I use it for a few hours.
Has this ever happened to anyone else's phone and what was the problem? and should I send it in for warranty work????

My 2nd Gen Iphone got dangerously hot recently for no apparent reason. I was not using it, it was off and locked but when I picked it up to use it, it was SUPER hot. I read a case where a man fell asleep with his phone on his leg and woke up after it burned his leg. Is this a dangerous device? Bad Chinese batteries? Who do I contact to investigate?

  • Adapter is HOT HOT HOT!

I have a 5 month old adapter, and it's hot while my iBook is charging. It was not happening before! What's going on?

Thank you!! I sure was hoping my problem was NOT unique
Mine is now doing the very same thing! I got it in November; used it like crazy through March and now, when I'm getting back into using it I find it is almost burning to the touch. I almost need an oven mitt to unplug it!
I will contact Apple and see what they say...

  • Apple iMac 2.8GHz Hot Hot Hot!!!

Hi, I have looked on iStat at my temps in my new iMac.
Is it normal for the CPU to reach 60 Degrees, Hard Drive 56 Degrees, Airport Card 65 Degrees?
The 3 fans are working, the CPU & Hard Drive run at 1200rpm all the time, and the Optical Drive at 700rpm.
Now this is after being on a few hours or after playing a game etc, not just sitting doing anything.
It gets very hot at the top of the iMac, but cant really feel the air coming out of the top vent, like on other iMacs I have owned, eg" iMac G4
What's the top temp I should be worried about?
    Please help? Thanks.

1 week old system , only patch 1.2 installed
temperatures while gaming or high system use increase by around 15 degrees celsius for cpu , gpu and power source
usually cpu is under 40 , gpu around 50 and power source around 55 , a bit hot on top , and only a slight breeze out of the top
i guess this is normal , and the system runs very good , ambient room temperature is always 24 , airport is always around 60
