Hot iPhone 4 And Draining Battery

I had to wait until this January to finally get my iPhone 4.  A couple of months ago I had to get it replaced by Apple because the ear piece on the phone stopped working. Great customer service by the way. I received the replcement very quickly. Two or three weeks ago I went to get my phone and it was very hot. I hadn't been using it and the battery had drained quite a bit. I checked to be sure and I had zero apps running. But after a shut down and restart it was fine.
But it seems to be doing this a couple of times a week now. I don't want to panic but would like to know what this could be. I just don't want to get stuck with a dead phone either. My year warranty is up at the end of this coming January. But I also don't want to make a claim if I don't have to, I really don't want Apple to think I'm trying to just get a new one.
Has anyone else experienced this and in your opinion should I contact Apple for a replacement?
Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

I reckon you should take it to Apple and tell them your issue. They are most likely to replace the iPhone, even though they might not be able to see the issue at the store. I recently got my iphone 4 replaced with a new one because of a defective home button. The home button issue did not show up at the Apple store, but he said this can happen where issues occur at home and not at the store so he replaced it with a brand new one.  you should be fine, as long as your iPhone is still in warranty.

  • HOT iPhone and poor battery life after 1.14 to 2.1 firmware upgrade

I recently upgraded my Original iPhone's firmware from 1.1.4 to 2.1. I did a restore rather than a simple upgrade (backup, restore to version 2.1, restore backup).
After the restore I noticed that my battery life was terrible and that the phone would get very hot (near the top of the phone) sometimes, as if the battery was discharging very quickly. I read a few posts that suggested Push might be the culprit, so I turned Push off (I'm not using MobileMe), and this seemed to solve the problem. However...
I now notice that whenever I play Apple's Texas Holdem from the App Store or play YouTube clips the same phenomena occurs, and that nothing short of a hard reset will stop it.
Oddly, if I refrain from playing YouTube clips or playing Texas Holdem battery life is much better than before the firmware upgrade.
In short, it looks as though there is something wrong with the 2.1 firmware. I see sporadic accounts of similar behavior on the various discussion boards, so I know I'm not alone.
Is there a fix for this behavior?
    Thanks in advance...
    James

Sounds more like an app stuck processing that shouldn't be....does happen from time to time. Behing hot means it is constantly processing.
    To fix:
    Try a reboot (described below).
Think of it this way, the iPhone is more of a computer than a phone. It suffers from being a new OS and nobody can deny there are not bugs and memory leaks. The longer left running, the more things start to fail or slow down (I have had the iPhone since day one of original phone and I am just speaking from my experience). Thus I equate it to like when Windows95 came out...not sure of your age or if you remember those days...but back then it was a running joke of how many days you can keep Windows 95 running before you had to reboot. I am sorry to say but the iPhone is the same way right now (but getting better with a few hiccups back during the 2.0 release). So for me, I reboot daily when I leave in the morning and take it off the charger. By doing so I rarely see any lag or problems.
    A reset/reboot is:
    Go to Home Screen
    Press and Hold Home Button
Keep holding and press and hold Lock Button
    Keep holding Both
You will see Slide to Turn Off (Don't let go to slide, just keep holding)
The phone will turn off (in time, but screen will look like it has some white lines)
    Keep Holding
When you see the Apple Logo, you can let go.
Turning off via the Slide to Turn off while good and fine to turn off, is more like the Sleep Mode on a computer. Thus any locked up issues in memory remain when you turn back on. A reboot as described is like doing a real Turn off and Turn On on a computer.

    For me, 2.1 works great.

    Hello Igor,
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.  I would be concerned too if my iPhone were heating up and losing battery life quickly.  There are a few articles I found that might help with what you are experiencing on your iPhone.
The first thing I recommend is quitting open applications.  You can find an article with the steps to that here:
iOS: Force an app to close
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5137
If you are still experiencing the same issues on the iPhone after quitting all the apps that are currently open, follow the steps below:
    Battery life seems short
Click ( www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html) for tips on how to prolong iPhone's battery life.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
Connect iPhone to iTunes and restore iPhone.
If the screen shows a low-battery image, the battery is low on power and needs to charge for up to ten minutes before you can use it.
When charging iPhone, make sure to leave it charging until it is fully charged. You'll know the battery is fully charged when the battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen looks like this .
Note: When charging using a computer, don't connect iPhone to a keyboard. Also, the computer must be turned on and not in sleep or standby mode. If iPhone is connected to a computer that's not turned on or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPhone battery may drain.
You can find the full article here:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting

    I hope this helps!
    Best,
    Sheila M.

  • After Updating the iOS 7.04 on my iPhone 4s drain battery quickly on standby mode & also doesn't respond volume up button, why?

After Updating the iOS 7.04 on my iPhone 4S drain battery quickly even on standby mode & also doesn't respond volume up button, why?

My battery problem woes continues to persist.  Yesterday, I had about 85-90% battery life in the morning.  A couple hours later when I looked at the phone it was down to 65%.  At that point, I shut off wi-fi, bluetooth, and background app refresh.  I received one call shortly after that.  The call lasted about two minutes.  My battery was now down to 40%.  Another hour later, down to 16%!  Here's the kicker:  I plugged in the phone to a charger and it jumped to 65% in a matter of minutes.  I unplugged the phone and within a couple of hours it was back down to around 30%.  I plugged it in again and within 10 minutes it was up to 75%.
At first glance it looks very much like a hardware issue.  However, I never had this problem until I upgraded to 7.0.4.  Also, the above battery roller coaster ride isn't a constant.  That is, it seems that only sometimes this happens.  So...I'm thinking it's either an app running in the background eating up juice (though I have Background App Referesh turned off) or the iOS is buggy.

  • My iPhone 5 iOS 7.0.4 still gets hot and drains battery with everything but cellular turned off.  What to do?

Have a new iPhone bought in late July 2013.  It had zero heating issues and battery issues until the past week (Nov. 2013).  Now, the iPhone gets hot to the touch and the battery drains within 2 to 3 hours, EVEN AFTER I HAVE DISABLED ALMOST EVERY FEATURE OF THE iPHONE.
This iPhone has iOS 7.0.4, installed within last 36 hours.  I then erased the entire iPhone and restarted it as a New iPhone.  Then I went in and turned off everything in the way of Settings that permit disabling.  All notifications, spotlight searches, application updating, accessibility features, push features, location services, etc. were turned off or disabled.  Brightness is set to Auto.  Don't use the iCloud.
After doing all of that, which essentially rendered this iPhone just a clunky old cell phone, not even using WiFi, I connected to iTunes on my computer and restored my backed up apps, photos.
After the Restore, I went back into settings and made certain that, again, all notifications, app services, location services, updatings, etc. were disabled, still.
    The problem persists.
It seems the only solution is to get rid of all my Apps and never use WiFi, or iCloud, or Mail.  That is unacceptable.
Does anyone have a solution, besides my calling on the warranty on this phone?

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.
If the problem continues, take the device to Apple for evaluation and possible replacement.

  • IOS & iCloud: Broken iCloud data causes kbd process to crash constantly and drains battery

On Stackoverflow I was told to come here. Since a few days ago my iPhone 5s is getting unusually warm and the battery drains REALLY quick, like in 4-5 hours. I tried turning all the usual suspecty off (location service, cellular data, push, etc.) but no change. Now, when looking through the crash logs on the device, I found a huge number of crash reports for the kbd process. There is a crash log every ~30-60 minutes and they all contain something like this:

  • Macbook Pro heating up and draining battery after yosemite upgrade.

On Friday, I upgraded to Yosemite and I really like it. However my computer keeps heating up very quickly when doing simple tasks and the battery also drains. About 1% every 2 minutes when on Safari and having Pages open in the background. What can I do to slow down the battery drain. Before, on Mavericks I could get a whole day on Safari but now about half a day.
This is the report that I got from EtreCheck.

Nothing obvious here, but better get rid of that remnant of CleanMyMac2. Also check if all software with kernel extensions, launch agents and launch daemons is still necessary and up to date (if not uninstall or update).

  • BB Z10 Processor Overheats and Drains Battery

This overheating issue occurs when I SMS photos on occasion and sometimes when using the browser. I have eliminated apps like News 360 and other movie downloading apps which I feel used too much processing power or stayed in a loop. The only thing I have found that works is to remove the battery for a minute or so and when reinserted the problem usually disappears. Maybe if I could reboot without removing the battery the problem would not be so vexing.

I have the same issue, and it's getting quite annoying.
I sent a few picture messages about 2 hours ago, and since then, the phone overheats and drained about 50% battery life.
Last night, same thing occured, battery was overheating just from my phone being in my pocket, without any apps to my knowledge being active.
It happens more often than previously with the latest 10.1 patch.

  • Greyed out wifi and draining battery

My wifi is greyed out and my battery keeps draining after 10 hours while on stand by. I have to turn my phone off so I dont have to keep charging it, and turn on 3G everytime I need to check for messages. According to research, this is an ios 7 problem.
I'm really annoyed because my warranty has run out and I have to pay for a replacement of a phone which is out dated anyway.
Not sure whether to take it to a local phone shop and get the wifi chip and battery repaired or to just buy a new phone even though this replacement phone was given to my by apple in February.
Apple have lost me as a customer, and I declare to no longer buy from them.

Have exactly the same problem as you. I would sit tight if I were you. Might get a free replacement from Apple in near future

  • Since latest upgrade why does my iPhone and iPad battery usage seem greater?

Following the latest upgrade (April 2014) the battery usage on both iPhone and iPad is greater than before (50%+ in one day). Any ideas why or do I need to close anything?

  • Slow phone and draining battery

Hi. I have a problem with my phone being very slow and the battery emptying up rather quickly (from full to empty during the night). This happened after I transferred some songs to it and disconnected the USB cable before the phone had said it was OK to pull it out. All the songs I transfer to it also come up seven times in a row each, for some reason.
I have tried to download new software, but I just get the message that I already have the latest version and therefore can not install it. I have also tried to use some code (which I can't remember), but it did not help.
    Any suggestions anyone?

Sounds like you will have to send it to your local Nokia Care Point to have it checked out.

  • My iPhone 4s has been getting extremely hot lately and draining my battery, is this something to worry about?!

Does anyone have the problem of their phone always hot?! Sometimes I even get the sign that says my iPhone is too hot. Is this something to worry about?! I was never like this until the recent ios7 upgrades.

It could also be that your battery has gone bad.  If your phone is still under warranty, make an appointment at an Apple store.  It will take a tech a few minutes to test the battery, and they will replace if for you if it is bad.  If not under warranty, search for a repair person in your area.

  • My autolock is not working since i update my iphone 4 and ipad to ios6. Even my new iphone 5 autolock is not working. If forgot to manually lock my ipad get hot and drained battery

How to fix autolock screen thats not working?

I have already tried this but still the same. I have also tried un-pairing my speakers and re-pairing! Still get broken playback at times. This even happens when I am close to the bluetooth receiver.

  • IPhone 4s heats up and drains battery quickly after upgrading to iOS 8.1.2

Last Sunday i.e. on 14-Dec-2014 i upgraded my iPhone 4S (WiFI + 3G, 64GB) to iOS 8.1.2. Since then my iPhone's battery has started to drain out abnormally fast (it doesn't even last an hour after charging it fully to 100%) and the phone even heats up simultaneously. When checked under Settings> Usage> Battery Usage, i found the app-wise usage of battery like this: Phone (Audio) 36%, WhatsApp-24%, Home & Lock Scree-17%, Settings-7%, Messages-5%, Mail-4%, TOI-2%, Conatact-2%, and rest few apps 1% each. Prior to upgrading the iOS to 8.1.2, the battery life of my iPhone was normal: i just had to recharge once in 24 hours with normal usage of the phone. Could anybody help me to fix the problem? Thanks in advance. -BBS Ijam, GTK/SKM/171214

I think iPhone 4s is oLd now we need to update our as I will have to change my battery from repair center maybe this will solve the problem the new iOS are heavy for our phones.
*** I also have extra internal battery cover for my iPhone. I can't go out without that cover because my iPhone battery drain so fast from 100% it will be maybe 60 % so fast that is so annoying.
Long story short my iPhone is screwed up I think I don't trust my iPhone battery anymore.
