my mothers mac the safari dosent work right the mail the mail wont open up certain emails saying the plugin is blocked etc

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If 10.7.0 or later...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when trying to open Mail or Safari.

I assume these are POP accounts and all computers are set to remove from Server after downloading.
So on the non dominant ones... Mail Preferences>Accounts, highlight an account, Advanced tab, uncheck remove from Server, just have the main dominant one remove from server.
    Or get/setup IMAP accounts.

  • XFCE4 & Preferred Applications; Mail reader 'claws mail' wont open

Configuring my XFCE4 setup I wanted to set Claws Mail as my standard mail client, such that when I open links in my browser pointing to mail addresses (mailto:[email protected]) that specified mail clilent automatically opens and lets me type my mail right away.
Now... that doesn't work. First Sylpheed Claws was set as my Mail Reader (apparently installing claws mails leads to two entries in the /usr/bin, one for Claws Mail and one for Sylpheed Claws). I switched to Claws Mail, and... it doesnt work.
So, what is there to do about this issue? Any workarounds?
I am using Epiphany as my browser, if that's relevant.
Ah, I also wanted to track this problem down by opening Epiphany in the terminal and see what happens (error messages that is). But it won't open in the shell. I start it, it runs, but there is nothing printed in the prompt (if I close the terminal again, epiphany stays open). Can I force it to run inside the shell?

Although the post is quite old -- I have the same problems using awesome window manager, epiphany browser and claws-mail.
If someone still uses Epiphany with webkit see
    http://www.mail-archive.com/epiphany-li … 03090.html
    For epiphany 2.30 I tried
    $ mkdir -p ~/.gconf/desktop/gnome/url-handlers/mailto
    $ gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/mailto/command -t string 'claws-mail --compose %s'
    $ gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/mailto/enabled -t bool true
But it won't work ;-( Has anyone ideas?

  • HELP!!! Mail wont open

Hi can someone pleaseeeeee help me with this problem. It all started about a month and half ago and i am unable to open mail. I have my mail in my dock and everytime i click on it i see "mail" at the top of the browser but the actual mail server or browser doesn't open. I dont know if this had to do with me downloading a mail notifier from google gmail and since then when i tried to open mail it stop working it wont open! i uninstalled the google app and it still wont open i tired everything i think, i even turned off the computer and back on and nothing. I have a mac book pro tiger 10.4.11 Please HELP! thanks in advance.

First I'd backup your whole Mail folder, with a right Mouse click>Archive, move to a safe place, also move the file below to a safe place.
Try moving this file first, then logout/in...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
If that doesn't work try the .plists in...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/
If you wish to reinstall Mail, it's on your Install Disk.
Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4...

"Here's a list of all the custom installation options available with Optional Installs.mpkg:
    * Applications
    o Address Book 4.0
    o iCal 2.0
    o iChat 3.0
    o iTunes 4.7.1
    o Mail 2.0
    o Oxford Dictionaries
    o Safari 2.0
    o X11"
Personally, I'd leave Mail just lie... it's like trying use an Etch-a-Sketch to replicate the Mona Lisa for me!
    I use these two...

  • Mail wont open attachment

At some point in the last two months, OS Mail quit opening attachments (PDF, .doc, .ppt) from email messages. They now have to be saved, then opened from their saved location, at which point the files work fine. I used to be able to just click and they would automatically open.
I didn't see anything obvious leading to this problem in system preferences, mail preferences or adobe or microsoft that would have led to this. I have looked for answers on Apple and elsewhere and didn't see this problem addressed.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Mac Mini
    OS 10.8
    Mail version 6.0
    Microsoft Word 2008 12.3.3
    Adobe 8.3.1

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Quitting Mail closes open emails on restart

    I just upgraded to Mavericks.
Previously, if I had a bunch of email windows open when I quit Mail they would all re-populate when I restarted Mail. Now Mail re-opens and all of the windows are closed...
Anyone have a fix for this??

I assume these are POP accounts and all computers are set to remove from Server after downloading.
So on the non dominant ones... Mail Preferences>Accounts, highlight an account, Advanced tab, uncheck remove from Server, just have the main dominant one remove from server.
    Or get/setup IMAP accounts.

  • Mail wont open in Leopard

Have upgraded to Leopard also installed XP Pro in NTFS format, I use Leopard for all day to day stuff and XP Pro infrequently. When I try and launch MAIL the following message appears on screen MAIL WONT LAUNCH. During the set up of XP Pro I went on line and validated. I was wondering if this has blocked my mail. Safari is working fine and all other network links around the office are fine.
    Thanks

Sounds like you've co-minglied an old install?
Check your MAIL app version...should be 4.2. If not and you can't find it, do a custom install from the SL DVD and choose to install related applications only.
If still no joy, try this - find the /Library/Preferences folder in your user/Home folder and then locate and delete this file:
    com.apple.mail.plist
*Caution* - doing this may clear your account settings so be sure to note those first in the event you are required to reconfigure, etc.

  • New Macbook Mail wont open

When I click on the Mail icon in the dock it bounces once and then does nothing. It won't open through the hard drive either. I am on a brand new MacBook, just getting set up. Why wont it work?

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, proceed as follows:
    1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
    2. From the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that the Console application displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
    3. In the Finder, go to /Applications/, and try to open Mail by double-clicking on it. Look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that might be written there as a result. They may provide some clues as to what the problem is.
In the meanwhile, take a look at the following article, in case this is a font issue:

  • Mail wont open or load messages!!

Hi, I am having the following problem with Mail.. When I open Mail from either the Dock or Finder nothing opens. Mail appears in the menu bar and the only way of viewing its normal screen is to go:
    Window > Message Viewer
When it comes up no emails show or load and I simply get 'Loading' with the loading wheel when I select a specific email.
I think this came around the same time that I updated to 10.5.7, but I am not sure if the two are related. If so, I updated via 'Software Update'.
Any help would be much appreciated, as I am not a fan of Thunderbird!

    Hi,
Please note that this upgrade related problem would very likely be what has been covered by the support document at the link below:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2537
If you also find any files named to include MessageSorting (which would mean you once have upgraded from a version of OSX earlier than 10.4, (which is clearly the case for you), remove those, also, but never restore those.
Often this is all that needs to be done, but you might then need to force an overall reindexing via the removal of the Envelope Index. Note the special instructions when forcing the reindexing of IMAP or Exchange accounts in the following:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/3.0/en/14019.html
This will force the reindexing of all the POP mailboxes and all On My Mac mailboxes. With regard to any IMAP accounts if you have any, the practical result of this action of removing the account folder, is that with the IMAP account still set up in the Preferences, Mail will connect to the IMAP server and create a new account folder, and while doing so will index the messages in the mailbox folders of the IMAP accounts on the server.
    Keep me posted.
    Ernie
