Hot Rod PMacG4 400 AGP/Photographer

I read that onnly 1.5 GB of memory is allowable on the Apple G4 M7891LL/A. I have enough slots for 2 GB. What's up with that?
If I put 2 GB in it, will it do anything?
Also... So, my 9 year old Mac is getting slow, and can hardly handle video files, and I want a flat screen monitor (still have the old school box).
I was going to add another 512 of memory in the last empty slot,
and is it possible to switch out the Rage 128 Pro with 16 mb for a Radeon with 32 mb? If I do that, will it make a difference? What monitor could I hook up to ol' Macbessie then? I do a lot of Photoshop/photography work. It's come to a screatching halt because my discs are full, etc...
I'm also having a hard time viewing video at a resonable pace.
I don't want to buy memory, and a new graphics card, and then find out that I still can't support a decent monitor, and vise versa.
I just don't have credit for a new mac.
What there any other photographers on the Mac G4 400 AGP that have their systems Hotrodded? What did you do? HELP ME PLEASE!

Sandidt, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Here's the specs on your G4 Gigabit model http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermacg4/stats/powermac_g4_4002.html
The max 1.5GB RAM only applies to operation on OS 9. In OS X, 2GB is the max. You might obtain a slight speedup with more RAM, however, you Mac is limited by the 400MHz processor speed & 100MHz bus speed.
Someone else will have to address the video upgrade. Rather than spend $ on upgrading your old Mac, you might be better off buying a newer, but used Mac. In the Dallas area Craig's List, G4 1.25MHZ Macs are listed for $325-400.

  • Power Mac G4 400 AGP boot from CD/firmware question

    Hello-
What is the firmware that I need for 9.0.4? I have 9.0.4 installed, but I want to erase and do a clean install and then move on to 9.1 and on. My system profiler says that my BootRom is 3.2.6f1.
I'm trying to boot from a CD (via inernal CD drive) and I'm not having any luck and I'm wondering if it's a firmware problem. My machine displays the start up disk on the desktop and will open its contents, so it seems that the cd drive is ok. When I hit the apple dropdown menu and restart, I press the "C" and all I get is grey. I get the start up chime, but then grey. I also tried the Start up disk function and was able to choose the OS disk for start up, but to no avail.
My start up disks did not come with the machine, but they are Apple G4 9.0.4 and the person I bought them from said they were intended for a G4 400 AGP computer, which I have. I might add that I have the 9.0.4power pc enabler installed as this was a school machine networked for school use. i don't know if this would make any difference. The problem may be the disks, but obviously, I'm hoping not.
Any help would be big help, thanks in advance.

    Hi, veesh678 -
Early models of the G4 (AGP) models came with OS 8.6; later models came with an installer for a model-specific version of OS 9.0.4. The latter disk will have a blue-gray label, be named "Power Mac G4" with a subtitle "Software Install", and has a part number of 691-2657-A (the part number will be in fine print on the right-hand side of the label).
Non-current firmware will not preclude the machine from booting to that CD; a retail OS 9.0.4 Install CD (white label, gold 9, no model named) probably will not work, although a retail OS 9.1 or 9.2.1 Install CD should work fine.
The current firmware version for the G4 (AGP) model is v. 4.2.8, which can be downloaded from this article -
    Article #120068 - G4 Firmware Update 4.2.8
Note that to install that version the machine must be booted to OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.x from its hard drive, and the firmware update must be run from the same hard drive.
Before installing firmware update v. 4.2.8, download and run DIMM First Aid (it's a free download) to verify the compliance of the RAM in the machine.

  • Fit Dual 450 mother board in 400 AGP?

Hi I want to fit a Dual 450 mother board into a AGP 400 mhz, I have noticed that the 450 Mother board has a twenty two pin connector and the 400 only a twenty hole connector.
The connector physically fits the socket via the guide slot but leaves the two first holes empty.
I presume these are the logic board feeds, can they be "jumped", if so from which pin to which pin?
    Thanks in advance
    Robert

    Hi-
There are a couple of differences besides the number of pins. There is also a 28v feed in the GE. The problem in the conversion is the 28v. The Sawtooth PSU has no provisions for providing such.
You can get a 24 pin adapter at a PC store, and mod the wiring to convert the 20 to the 22 pin scheme, and then you can add a 28v "wall wart" to provide the 28v feed.
Using the G4 Pinouts as a guide, you should be able to get your wiring revamped. The author from outofspec adds some comments regarding using the external 28v power supply.
A 24 pin Motherboard connector example can be seen, as well as some other advice is available.
Other options are to simply get a GE PSU and put in the Sawtooth case, or get an Aftermarket PSUthat has the necessary wiring.
When I added an ATX PSU to my Sawtooth, I first modded a 20pin-24 pin adapter, made a few tests, and then modded the cable of the PSU. The adapter was way too bulky, but did allow me to build confidence in the proceedure.
One other bit of advice, is to *+triple check all of your work+*, so that disaster can be averted.

    Hi, M.
ROM ndrv for ATY,Rage128Pd is too old
I have a PM G4 Dual 500 MHz that displayed that message in system.log at every startup for its ATI Rage 128 Pro graphics card, but it did not cause a problem. As you can see by this Google search there is not much reported about this issue.

  • Which HD for PPC G4, 400, AGP

Thank you for the help with installing a new HD. Does anyone have any special advice as to which internal HD to buy or avoid? The following web site is what I am considering, please comment if you have found any problems with certain brand names of HD's or recommendations. I do not store alot of pics or video's and don't need a monster HD but would like more speed and space. I have the original 10G HD now.

If you have the usual electronics, office supply, or computer stores in your area, I wouldn't bother with OWC. Any of these retailers routinely sale-prices IDE hard drives at less than 50¢/GB. Check the sales inserts in your Sunday newspaper or today's (11-24) paper for after-Thanksgiving bargains. You should be able to buy a 120 GB IDE/EIDE hard drive with 8 MB cache for about $50. I've found that Best Buy and Staples usually have the best deals, because their low advertised prices often don't involve mail-in rebates. After adding your local sales tax, it's still less than the prices listed on your linked OWC page. I've used Maxtor drives for some time, as they've consistently had the best sale prices over the years. To date, I've had no problems with any of them.

  • Problem running games with GeForce 2 MX/MX 400

    Hello,
I recently bought a new computer. The only problem I've experienced with it is similar to some of the problems mentioned in this forum.
To give you a better idea of my problem, here's my system resources:
    Intel P4 2.0 Ghz processor
ASUS P4S333-M motherboard (ACPI BIOS Revision 1007)
1 x 512 megs of generic DDR RAM
AOpen ATX-300 GU Power Supply (Output: 300W)
2 Maxtor IDE drives (7200 RPM)
    A DVD-Rom
    An HP CD-Writer
    SB Live! Audio Card
MSI Nvidia GeForce 2 MX/MX 400 (AGP)(64 megs DDR RAM) (Latest Nvidia driver version installed: 4.1.0.9)
    OS: Windows 2000 Professional + SP 3
    DirectX 9.0
The only time I've experienced errors is while playing 3D games. I've noticed choppy video performance, freezes in gameplay and spontanious reboots. The problem is also intermitant. Sometimes the games crash on startup, while other times it occurs after as much as half and hour playtime has passed. The games I've been having problems with include Warcraft 3 and Links 2003.
I'ver checked my system's Event Viewer and found numerous "nv" errors in the system log. Here's an example:
    Date: 12/24/2002
    Time: 13:21
    Type: Error
    Source: nv
    Category: None
    Event ID: 6
    Description: Parse Error on CMDCD 00000001 00000e00 00260026 00000010 0004cd02
    Another type of error found:
    Date: 12/24/2002
    Time: 13:21
    Type:Error
    Source: nv
    Category: None
    Event ID: 13
    Description: GR SW Notify Error on 0001 d3d05601 00000096 00000d00 00350ea2 00000002
I've been trying to solve this problem for close to a month now. I've scoured various newsgroups and websites on the Internet. I've updated all my drivers and flashed my BIOS with the latest version from ASUS. I've tried reinstalling the games on FAT32 partitions. I've unplugged various storage drives from the power supply to see if the video card wasn't getting enough power. I've reseated all the cards on the motherboard and checked the temperature inside the case.
I've tried playing with various graphic settings in the Nvidia menu in Windows. I've tried various screen resolutions and refresh rates...
No matter what I've tried, the errors continue to occur. Based on other topics in this forum similar to this problem, I've tried looking at power supply, thermal, and BIOS issues. Nothing has worked. If anyone can suggest a possible troubleshoot for this problem, I'd be extremely grateful.
    Happy Holidays,
    Desoto

I did try updating the Sound Blaster driver and moving the cards to various slots on the motherboard without much luck...
However, (this is probably a stupid newbie question, but:) what exactly are the chipset drivers? And where would I look on my computer to find out what version I'm currently using? In the BIOS? In Windows?

  • MobileSTOR MS2UT + esata + USB + mac pro = never-ending problems

    Hey gang,
I seemed to have entered a perfect storm here:
I had purchased the *MobileSTOR MS2UT 2 Bay SATA to eSATA/USB 2.0 RAID 0/1* Enclosure initially for a *dual 800 quicksilver G4* mac that I had, looking for a hardware-based Raid solution for back ups and to not burden the G4 processor. I have replaced the G4 with an early *2008 2.8 dual quad core mac pro*. After two machines and two different PCI sata cards, I've had no luck....
    (website for the above enclosure)
    http://www.sansdigital.com/mobilestor/ms2ut.html
For starters, in the G4, I had a quality Seritek/1ve2+2 controller that had no problem with two other single drive enclosures, but failed with the MS2UT.
    http://www.firmtek.com/seritek/seritek-1ve2plus2/
A glib response from Seritek support says that I should use their enclosure. Digging around I find that I need a controller card that can handle a port multiplier enclosure rather than just any serial ata enclosure. Seems silly to me that the user has to dig for this. I mean the USB & FIREWIRE interfaces don't seem to care: it says USB/FIREWIRE on the effing box of both the controller and on the drive, badda-bing, badda boom: it works. Whats with this high maintenance of esata. Well you get roughly 2-3x the performance so Ok, maybe its worth it.
Well, with the macpro on the horizon,, I give up on the G4, close that unsolved mystery. For the mac pro I figure PCIe, a modern computer, no problem. I get the computer, fish around the internet for an esata PCIe card, then I come across this review of the WiebeTech SilverSATA II which appears to be similar to that of the MobileSTOR:
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/wiebetech/silver2/
It appears that the unit has specific tastes as far as having the right card to make it bootable, multiport aware, etc... (the Sonnet Tempo 4+4 card works but its a PCIx card, not PCIe)
Like I said: install a bootable Mac OS on any USB/firewire drive, plug it into any card, and it works... estata... its russian roulette...
Ok so I round up some vendors, (firmtek, sonnet, Highpoint) send them emails to see what they think: if their latest cards will work with the MS2UT... They are all over the place.. they think it may work, they dunno... it should work, they haven't tested it... then they try to push their own enclosure hardware on me. I mean see an astrologist or have your palm read.. it seems more likely you'll get a more accurate answer from them, rather than vendors... props to Sonnet, though, they list compatibility right on the page with their controller.
then 10.6 comes out... and you email vendors about compatibility on that OS, and they don't even email you back.
So I find this review of the highpoint rocket raid for the mac on the great sight: Barefeats.com
    http://www.barefeats.com/hard119.html
to make a long story short:
+KEY FEATURES of the "eSATA for Mac"+
    +1. Dual eSATA ports+
    +2. 32 and 64-bit EFI onboard+
+3. Able to boot Mac OS X+
+4. Plug and Play for (Oxford and Silicon Image chipset) external storage+
    enclosures
    +5. 4x PCIe rating+
+6. Support for Direct Attached and Port Multiplied enclosures+
    +7. RAID 0, 1, 5, and JBOD support using browser-based manager+
+8. Native support for Snow Leopard+
    +9. Compatible with 2006 - 2009 Mac Pro+
I should be set, right? WRONG!
I email highpoint, detailing that I planned to mix both Port multiplied (PM) and direct access (DA) enclosures on the same card at the same time. They say maybe (only describing the PM enclosure, not even mentioning the DA enclosure compatibility as I specified), since its a raid card and I intended to use it with an enclosure with its own raid hardware, however they say they see no issues. Well it shows they don't even know their own hardware: Their docks say that the card supports PM enclosures as well as DA (direct access) enclosures. Their web based software even shows the two as separate categories. What is buried in the manual and not cleared up by tech support or their product page is that YOU CAN'T MIX PM AND DA ENCLOSURES ON THE CARD AT THE SAME TIME!!! I explained more in the paragraph above than any tech support from any company. Unbelievable where support has gone these days.
I discover the above because I found the card at Fry's believe it not and since they have a generous return policy I tried it out and learned the above the hard way. No dice on the MS2UT with what is perhaps the most forgiving esata card for the mac.
So more hunting on the web, this time the enclosure's manufacture site: sans digital.
    http://www.sansdigital.com/mobilestor/ms2ut.html
...clicking on the accessories tab I find several esata adapter cards... funny that they include ones that don't appear to support PM enclosures... Anyway, I study two that state they supports port multipliers:
    http://www.sansdigital.com/adapters/ha-san-4espcix2.html:
    http://www.sansdigital.com/adapters/ha-dat-4espcie.html
Ok, I may not get a bootable enclosure.. I just want to get this thing working in esata since cloning my internal raid on the mac pro takes 8 hours using usb, and my main purpose is to maintain a clone so I make my compromise.
I should be set, right? WRONG!
reading the fine print on both cards it says:
*(Please note that the host adapter card is based on Silicon Image chipset, which currently only support up to MAC OS 10.5.1 by Silicon Image.)*
I do more research, it seems any manufacturer using chips by Silicon Image will have an issue with 10.6 macs! On some websites it says Silicon Image will never release a driver. On firmtek it says they make their own driver and swears that it works. At the Silicon Image website they say they are an OEM provider so don't bother them, and that its up to the vendor to make a compatible driver. Sheesh!!
I don't get it.. whats the point in having an esata sticker if it appears to come in more flavors than an ice cream shop!
Oh and it gets better: I go to the sonnet site, thinking they have to have something that works, looking at their latest tempo SATA E4P:
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/temposatae4p.html
well, the fine print is EXHAUSTIVE, but again props to Sonnet for making it crystal clear:
    (4) Sonnet Tempo cards are compatible with most external SATA storage. However, external hard drives with USB 2.0/eSATA dual interface based on the Oxford Semiconductor OXU931DS storage controller chip may not be compatible with Mac OS X when connected via SATA. Known issues are kernel panics occurring when the drive is connected, or the drive not being recognized by the operating system.

So in short: if you have an enclosure that has both USB and esata, but does not use the JMicron 20366, then it will not be recognized by the card. If you have an enclosure with three interfaes: USB, FW and esata, you're fine. Keep in mind too: most manufacturers don't put the source manufacturer of their chipsets on the box. So I ask..
*HOW IS THE CONSUMER SUPPOSED TO KNOW!*
I swear, a perfect analogy is if I go to best buy, buy a toshiba DVD player only to discover it doesn't play DVD's that contain movies produced by Sony Pictures..because its not a a Sony/columbia House movie. You think consumers would put up with that crap? UNBELIEVABLE...
So now I have this really versatile enclosure that apparently can't run on Mac 10.6 with ANY esata controller for the mac. I really like the design of the enclosure, with its hardware based raid that is hot swappable and has a small footprint. However there seems to be no way to get a controller card for this device that will work on a 10.6 mac.
I guess whats inferred is that you should get an enclosure with the fewest variety of ports, i.e. esata/fw/usb... ironically if it has all three, you are ok, but not if it has usb/esata. Being that USB is the most popular, thats not easy. I'm looking to contact Sans Digital to see if they will exchange it for me, possible for a model with esata/fw800 or an esata only model, if it exists. My last resort is to just use it as a USB drive (my intention was to use it as a clone of my system, with the added security that the enclosure makes a copy of a copy in raid 1), however its like 3x as time consuming than esata.
If anyone has a working MobileSTOR MS2UT/wiebetech SilverSATA II in a 10.5 mac pro, please respond to me with your config. Thanks for reading!

Thank you hatter for your reply.
I'm familiar with OWC, as I've done business with them since 2001, as well as XLR8.
I have a 2008 mac pro so the 2009 model related problems are not an issue in my situation
As I stated above I go to reputable vendors for my hardware who have specific mac experience. I look specifically for hardened compatibility so that there is support for things like deep sleep. The Sans Digital enclosure was over $200..it was not cheap. The USB/Esata combo is the most common interface for the enclosure storage market. Having a compatibility issue is a vendor fault, not the buyer. Having minutiae flavors of esata compatability based on chipsets roulette wheel is inexcusable. The enclosure needs that I have is for the medium to be removable and be able to be rebuilt at the hardware level, i.e. at the enclosure's control panel. To the mac its just a drive. The hotswap and back up is transparent to the OS and mac hardware, and allows me to change from raid 0/1 and do back up right from the enclosure interface.
So far I haven't had problems with USB/Firewire. Meanwhile Esata to me has been nothing but beta testing for vendors and seeing how the chipset manufacturers have gone loosey-goosey on following spec and just dump cheap chinese crap into the market with no pride.
    for comparison:
    USB/FW, PATA, SATA, SCSI
    1) industry standard
    2) native drivers
    3) bootable. Period.
    4) buy a controller card/raid card, plug it in, format, it works even through major OS upgrades.
    5) USB/FW: Hot-swapable. Yes it really does work.
    Esata:
    1) Multiple standards (again, look at the Sonnet website to see the minefield one has to walk through to mate a controller card to an enclosure)
    2) non native drivers. Buying an esata card is like marrying into the vendors family. Plus if you manage to get things working and do an OS upgrade, you are playing russian roulette. If you system boots off it, then get life insurance because you may kill yourself.
3)Not bootable and no one seems to care to explain why. Whats odd is that some earlier PCIx cards were bootable (like sonnet Temp 4x4) but their PCIe successors aren't. Not sure if this has to do with the host computer BIOS and/or the current chipsets from SI which rely on custom drivers from the vendors. Another lovely example of this are the ODD_SATA ports on the Mac pro: storage only, not bootable. Sure it makes sense now that I've learned it the hard way, however to users of FW/USB and even IDE, one would think that motherboard ports are bootable. Yes I know this is a mac bios thing and its not even considered as part of the feature set of the computer
    4) As I've shown, each controller card seems to be unique, even if its from the same vendor. Even the drivers vary from card to card! Heck even the vendors are unsure as to how compatible their controller cards are with various enclosures. That is proprietary, not industry standard. OS upgrades doesn't seem to provide native driver support for Direct access and/or port multiplying interfaces. The problem with this is that film/video users like myself like to build bullet proof systems, and with raids that I've built from IDE, FW, or USB, I've never had the minutiae of compatibility issues as I've had with esata. I installed an Acard raid controller in my dual 800 back in 2001, installed the drives and forgot about it. it just worked through multiple OS upgrades. Not sure whats gong on with esata.
    5) Can't call it hot swappable if I can't get the **** thing to wok in the first place.
My analysis is this: Esata is basically a proprietary format to the vendor that sells the hardware, while USB/FW is an industry standard. I bought a quality enclosure that said "esata", I bought a quality controller that said "esata", it didn't work. I had to learn the hard way about DA and PM enclosures and now about chipset conflicts. I've built computers since the late 80's amiga days, hot-rodding that computer well beyond spec and with custom cooling. SCSI terminators and IDE master/slave issues were easy-cheesey because they followed straightforward rules. This esata stuff is just plain sloppy work on the part of vendors and as Danny Glover said I'm getting to old for this **** as far as being a beta tester for hardware.

  • Pismo Upgrades Worth It?

I posted a while back about the same Pismo. It now sits on the table lifeless. When pressing the power button, nothing happens, no ding, ping or grunts. It acted strange for a few days prior to its current state. It would suddenly have the screen go blank like a hot key was used to make it do so. Then it was random whether it would recover from that blank screen. Finally it simply stopped working in the midst of use. The battery is fully charged and was showing AC power as the source when it died. Any ideas on where to start and if it's worth it? I has 10-4-11 installed and a 120 Gig hard drive. had to revert back to the 400 board as the 500 died a while back. 1 GB of RAM. Have had this for almost a decade and truly would like to keep it going. Rumor has it a new aluminum is on the way for Christmas, but still would like the Pismo as backup. Thanks for any input.

    Richard,
Intrigued by your question I went to eBay and just put in Pismo in the search bar. I had to change the display order to "Price + Shipping Highest first" in order to get past the batteries and panoply of pismo related items and get to what I really wanted to know. How much are people asking for upgraded pismos? Well, it looks like around $650 for a g4 550 pismo with a large hard drive and airport and dvd burner. That is more than I expected frankly. Considering that I recently bought a 2 year old Macbook Pro for $911 it seems like a stretch to ask so much for a computer that, even though it is pretty cool, is still 8 years old!
That being said, I love my pismo and would probably ask more than I should if I were to sell it.
So, I guess the question comes back to you, how badly to you want your pismo back? You can probably get it to run again with a $30 logic board. If you look on that same list I found you can find the whole bottom case for $64 and a whole new display for $34! That's a $100 pismo (excluding shipping of course). You might consider putting in a bid on a working machine and swapping out parts until you get the one you like.
Two years ago I had a dead pismo, it would light up the caps lock and number lock but that was it. It was the logic board and I was lucky to find one for as low as $65. Now they're half that amount, "TESTED!".
I knew I was going to the third world and wanted a tough machine that didn't have a lot of street value so I opted to fix it and upgrade it via Daystar. They did the logic board swap and the g4 upgrade and also gave me a nice flannel keyboard cover that I'm still using 2 years later! It was, all said and done, around $500 at the time.
Now you can go to Wegenermedia.com and order a g4 550 daughter card for $200 (after you get a core refund for sending in your old one, I wonder if you could get more for sending in the 500mhz and the 400mhz!?). Of course you could send yours in and get it done for $239 (plus shipping both ways).
So, assuming you have a decent display and hard drive, optical drive etc you could have a hot rod pismo for about
Logic board ($40) + Upgrade ($200). That is assuming we are right about the logic board. I did read our friend's post from Australia who votes for replacing your power control board. I saw those on ebay ranging from $10 - $30 plus shipping.
Again, this is assuming you do all the work yourself. If you pay someone else to do it then you're in for more but you get a guaranteed working machine (well, at least a warranteed machine!)
Hope this helps you put things into perspective.
    John

  • Which Video card is best?

Looking for a Video Card replacement to view full screen movies on my 22in Widescreen, went from a Radeon 9200 Mac Edition PCI to now an Nvidia 6200 AGP (400Mhz 512mb) <Flashed> so far apart from a few glitches it works fine under 10.5.3 but it has limitations i.e. driver support. Would goto the 9800 128mb but think it would be a step down...
Thanks in advance for the information and recommendations.
    Jim

    Hi Jim-
Would goto the 9800 128mb but think it would be a step down...
Unless the 6200 has been hacked to unlock 4 pipelines (using modified 6600 or 6800 ROM) and has had the memory and GPU overclocked, the 9800 will pretty much eat the 6200 for lunch. Even with all the radical mod's, which most vanilla 6200's can't handle/aren't capable of, the hot-rodded 6200 would just come in close to even with an un-modified 128MB 9800 NP (Non Pro).
It's the architectural differences, and the better ATI drivers that make the difference.
For 2x AGP, the top dog is the 9800 Pro. Get one with 256MB VRAM and gain 10-15% over the 128MB version. Add an aftermarket cooler, and OC the 9800 beyond any 9800XT.......
BTW- the flashed 9800's have no limitations what-so-ever in any version of Leopard.......

  • Why does a mystery application try to open when I login?

I wonder if anyone can help me with an issue I'm having with a mystery application trying to open.
Every time I wake my iBook G4 from sleep, or I start it from shutdown (I am the only user), I see an application is trying to open at the right side of the dock. It shows as the generic application "A" starting to open, but then it suddenly vanishes. On the advice of a Mac-user friend, I went to System Preferences/Accounts/Login Items and removed everything there, then rebooted my machine, but I still have the same problem.
From my unfortunate experiences with PCs, I remember this type of login behavior usually indicates the machine is infected with a virus. Is that what is causing my iBook problem? I have the Firewall turned on, and I'm running Norton Antivirus for Mac (which has found nothing in repeated scans). What should I try next? Any help with this would be really appreciated.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

It's difficult to say what the application may be if you can't see its name, but in the Dock, the name won't show unless you are pointing at the icon. If you can get your mouse there fast enough (maybe put it in the right place, sleep, then wake your Mac?) you might see the app name before it closes. Then you'll have a better idea what it is.
You might also try the Activity Monitor application, which is in the /Applications/Utilities folder. It shows all the running processes, so you might be able to catch the app name before it closes.
When you know what the application is called, you may decide it's not a problem at all. If it's still unclear, come back and post it, and maybe someone will be able to tell you what it is. Lots of applications use little "helper apps," and it's possible it could be something like that. It's best to know what it is, but it's probably harmless.

  • Preview doesn't do the obvious...

I am trying to set up a simple presentation of a series of images.
I can create a slideshow of them in Preview but can not save the slideshow. It would have been obvious to let you save them as a QuickTime movie or print them to a multi-page pdf file. No way.
In fact this has lead me to waste an entire day unsuccessfully chasing apps to let me do this simple task.
Quicktime is crude beyond belief and failed to create a slideshow with a large number of files. It wasn't even graceful in its failure, it just went through the motions and produced no file.
I tried several times, hunting through my desktop and HDs trying to find possible places it had dumped them, to no avail.
Keynote makes me drag each file into a tailor made file and then hand place & adjust each image. It won't even let me bring in the files unless I go via iPhoto which is itself clumsy and quite confusing in its organisation style. The alternative is to drag in 1 file from the desktop, create a new page & drag in 1 file from the desktop etc. Imagine doing this for 100s of images!
iPhoto only allows 3 sizes for exported movies, none of which match my file sizes and is excruciatingly slow and seems to hang at the end with a perpetually spinning beachball.
Besides I hate having to take things into iPhoto as it creates yet more duplicates of my files, in places I have trouble locating and eats up my bootdrive.
iMovie creates huge files, blowing everything up into ridiculously large sizes.
Pages has basically the same problems as Keynote with some extra gotchas thrown in.
So much for iLife which seems to consider Hidden Features = Intuitive User Interface.
I am now going through a dozen 3rd party apps all of which also fail to deliver the goods.
How hard can this be for a simple slideshow?
    Beaut iMac G5 2Ghz + G4 400 AGP upgraded to G4 1000 that bombs all the time   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Peter
I have done all that. Next time I imported photos from my camera it stuck them back into the original iPhoto Library Folder on my bootup drive. By the time I noticed, I had a lovely shemozzle of some in one location and some in another with no clean way of sorting them out.
If you launch iPhoto with the external HD disconnected, it will create a library in the default position. A simple habit to get into is to hold down the option key when launching iPhoto and forcing yourself to choose the library each time, especially if you occasionally launch the app with the HD not available. Works for iTunes too.
As for all the rest there is nothing flagging whether a particular file has or hasn't been copied, or is merely linked,
There's nothing to flag. This is a one time decision. Either you want to Copy the Files to the iPhoto Library Folder or you don't. If you do, leave iPhoto in it's default settings, otherwise change the option at Preferences -> Advanced.
or you are dealing with an edited copy, or there is no edited copy and that is it.
The iPhoto Window always shows you the most recent version of the pic. If you can't recall whether you've previously edited it, simply right-click on it. If Revert To Original is available, it's been previously edited. If not, it hasn't. (Or a quick glance at the View menu will tell you the same thing.)
It is a mess which you are supposed to leave as an all or nothing or take extensive notes in a notebook attached to your monitor and consult before you do anything drastic.
I have 35 gigs of pics and no notebook. Of course, iPhoto is not for everybody. Many people prefer a simple image viewer as opposed to a Photo Organiser.
I can get my head around iTunes (even when it makes repeated linking errors) but iPhoto is a black cat tied up in a sack in a locked trunk in the bottom of the basement with the bulb burned out.
You do realise that both apps are databases, and like any database they require that you manipulate the data from within the app rather than through the finder. The good news is that pretty much anything you need to do can be achieved from within the apps. There's a very helpful community over at the iPhoto discussions.

  • Problem with PHP not working and Extra space in form I can't get rid of

This is my first time doing a form, much less using php. I would appreciate your help on the problems below.

The below should work for you.
As Jon points out the page has to be a .php page NOT a .html page.
The idea is that the page gets sent back to itself and the form information is processed then sent to the email address if there are no errors detected.
The unusual gaps in the form were being caused by unclosed tags amongst other things - hopefuly I put some of it right for you.
Copy all of the below and save it as contact.php - Obviously your server needs to support php for it to work, most do. I have not specified your email address in the php as it attracts spam from the forum so re-instate it where the xxxxxxx are.

  • Having a problem with the photos showing up after moving everything to another server.

    Greetings,
I used an older version of iWeb to create several websites a few years back, and would like to retain them. I followed the instructions and downloaded the five folders for the five websites on my iDisk, which took more than two hours, and then uploaded them to the server I use to host another of my websites, and made them all subdomains.
The first issue I had was a php code error for every page. Turns out I had to remove the very first part of the index.html file: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> and then everything seemed fine until I tried to go to another page. Ended up having to do this on every html page for each website.
Then I noticed that none of the pictures were showing up in the albums. I also have videos on two of the sites, and they worked fine. I checked /Photo_Albums/Pages, and inside were the folders with all the pictures, so I know they're there.
I have ruled out it having anything to do with my new server by opening the websites in Safari from their folders on my desktop, and had the same results; everything was good except there were no pictures on the page.
If anyone can help me with this I would really appreciate it! I've got 5 websites I have to get fixed in two days.
    Thanks!
    Take care,
              ~Chris

Thanks Roddy, but I don't think that's it, either. When I downloaded everything from my iDisk, it automatically created 3 versions of every picture, and named them either micro.jpg, thumb.jpg, or web.jpg. They can be found in the Photo_files>Media folder, each set of three in their own uniquely numbered folder. For example, one the websites is of a friend of mines hot rod Fiero.
Here is his website via iWeb:
    http://jimsfiero.com/
This is what it looks like after uploading everything to a different server:
    http://jimsfiero.ricehatersclub.com/
    Here's my personal website:
    http://peckerwoodspitstop.com/
And here it is after uploading everything:
    http://peckerwoodspitstop.ricehatersclub.com/
You can see that everything works, except where the page is a photo album.
    Thoughts?
Oh, BTW, I tried Wyodor's suggestion, and it shut everything down with a 500 Internal Server Error. Removing the suggested file corrected everything.

  • Setup help: Airport Extreme+Dialup+Switch+G4 Tower+PowerBook+Linux

I'd like some help setting up my home network with the Airport Express station. I have:
    - A dialup connection via an ISP to the Internet. This is not a dedicated phone line; it is shared with my home telephone.
    - An Airport Extreme base station. I currently have this connected to the phone jack and configured to call my ISP and connect. I have a cable from the LAN port of this station to an ethernet switch.
    - An ethernet switch, into which all my ethernet-connected devices plug.
    - A G4 PowerMac tower, running OS 10.3.9. This does not have an Airport card. It is connected to the switch via an ethernet cable.
    - A new PowerBook. This has an Airport card, and I usually connect to both my LAN and the Internet via that.
    - A PC running Fedora Core 3, with an ethernet card connected to the switch.
I'd like to know how to configure things to get them to work together the way I'd like. The "Designing Airport Networks" document doesn't go into enough detail about all the options available on the Airport Admin Utility. I would like to have the Airport base station dial my ISP, but only when I want it to, and disconnect when I want it to - the way I did on my G4 when it was connected directly via its modem. I'd also like the connection to be available (and controllable, if possible) to all computers connected to my local LAN via the switch. I do not have any of my computers set up to do DNS or DHCP serving, but I did set up the Mac computers to get their IP addresses from DHCP. Seems to be working, for them at least, but I notice that I have to use the single IP address via NAT: if I try to change that to use a range of addresses, I am warned that to do that I will have to assign a static address to the base station. That's fine, except: the base station needs to get a dynamic address via DHCP from the ISP when it dials in, so I'm not sure how to make the distinction; if it even needs to be made.
I hope I've been clear about what I want to do here. What can you tell me?
    Thanks,
    Frank Huddleston

    A few points:
    1. you referred to an "Airport Express station" in your opening sentence. This is of course a typo - you only have an Airport Extreme Base Station, correct?
    2. for your setup, you must have "Distribute IP addresses" and "Share a single IP address using DHCP and NAT" enabled. There is no reason for you to mess with those settings.
    3. to manually force the Airport Extreme Base Station to dial up (or hang up) an internet connection, you need to use the Java-based utility provided at:
    http://edge.cs.drexel.edu/GICL/people/sevy/airport/index.html#Hangup
Versions of that utility are available for both the MacOS and Windows. For Windows you also need to install Java available at:
    http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
For Linux - you're on your own to compile the source code provided with this utility. Hopefully your knowledge of Linux extends to being able to know how to do that.

  • External Monitor Issues - MacBook Pro +Acer

    Hello Everyone!!
I currently have my new Macbook Pro hooked up to a Thunderbolt display and all is running well!  BUT, I also have a mid 2009 MBP that I am setting up with a new ACER S271HL monitor (one of their newer models) and I am having some "quality" issues.  The MBP is utilizing 8G of RAM with a 500G HD: approximately 400G available, running the most current version of LION with all updates and runs nicely.  I didn't have any connectivity issues using a new Startech mini-display port to HDMI adapter and a new Monster HDMI cable. The ACER monitor is one of the newest models with resolution of 1920x1080 and the MBP did not have any issues recognizing it and I have not had any problems with "setting it up"- all resolutions are supported and recognized and everything seems ok.  I began by using MAC's Color Sync Utility and customized the monitor profile.  Then I did some fine tweaking with the monitor controls themselves - no issues.  The PROBLEM is that it just doesn't look good!!!! The text is not sharp in any document, browser tabs, content, etc. - the whole thing is kind of dull?! Video is ok at best - but again, not sharp.  So, I tried the Color Synch Utility again and had a second person set up a profile just to make sure I'm not going crazy?! - same result?!  I tried a different HDMI cable (new) - same result.  I tried a different mini-display to HDMI adapter - same result.  I reset the SMC and the PRAM - same result?!?!  I tried moving the monitor to another location to see if it was just the light and my eyes - no good.  I switched to a mini-display to DVI adapter/cable - same result. NOW, the thing that is really bothering me here is that my office uses older ACER monitors - discontinued V213H - I have three set up with an "older" DELL PC (no hot- rodded graphics/video card - standard, boring, office PC) and they LOOK GREAT?!?! So, I hooked my office laptop up to the new ACER monitor I bought and it LOOKED GREAT!?!?!  (with NO CONFIGURATION) I even used an old ratty VGA cable and it looked SO much better!?!?  I took the MBP to the office and hooked it up the work monitors and it only looked ok - better than on the new display, but still not sharp!?
So then I tried the driver route...ACER actually has a specific APPLE disclaimer of sorts on their support page indicating, that although their monitors are configured to work with all current computer models, that are tested in a PC environment and you may encounter issues that should be addressed with APPLE?!  Even though the monitor drivers I had are listed as the most current, I tried downloading them anyway - the MBP downloads them, but cannot install them because they are not recognized?!?  (All the support documentation, installation CD, etc. that came with the monitor was not recognizable by the MAC either)
SO - does anyone else have similar issues with ACER monitors?? Know of anyone else that might???  I can't hook up the MBP to the Thunderbolt display to really rule out a problem - but I'm confident this is not a hardware issue with any of the components.
I hate to give up on this because I'm setting it up for a friend so I figure I'll give it a few more days and see what kinds of ideas others might come up with before I throw in the towel and take this sucker back!
Thanks for reading my 'novel' of a post - any ideas are greatly appreciated!!!
    TL

i had the same problem, i solved it by buying a more higher end "hdmi to vga" wire, i 1st bought a cheap conversion wire "hdmi to vga" from a slow boat from china via Amazon and it didn't work on my macbook but seems to be working well on my windows laptop.
so i bought another conversion wire via Amozon "hdmi to vga" from a company called Sewell Quirts in a 10' version.... now my mac mirrors or extend my laptop monitor, hope this helps.
and its not a "file" issue like everyone else says in here.
and my acer monitor is an older one with only a dvi and vga inputs.... using it to extend my 2014 macbook pro retina.
