Hot Swappable drive case

I am doing a little upgrade to help me with backing up my computer etc.
When I was building my computer Baz Studio North suggested I consider this hot swappable drive thingie:
SUPERMICRO CSE-M35T-1B Black 5 Bay Hot-Swapable SATA HDD Enclosure
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817121405&cm_re=supermicro-_-17-121- 405-_-Product
I have one OS drive and 4 - 1TB drives in my raid.
Is that Micro Hot swappable still a good choice, or are there others.
I will be buying 2 additional 1 TB drives for backup and still, for now keep my raid as four 1 TB drives.
Thanks
Rowby

Hi,
Rowby
I have been using the Chembro Enclosures for a while Now, Very easy to install, keeps the HD's at low temps.
Since I am using 4 enclosures the fan sound was way to loud for me, so I replaced the fans for quite ones. With one enclosure the fan sound might not be to bad.
Also the sata connectors on the rear of the case look a lot better insulated than the supermicro.

I have some external FW drives I use with my Mini..I can't remember whether FireWire is hot swappable on the minis or not.

Yes, they are hot-swappable.... or almost so.
A true hot-swappable device can simply be pulled from the system or inserted with no other action on the part of the user. A Firewire drive can be removed and connected while the system is powered, but to remove it you need to unmount it by ejecting or dragging to the trash first.

Turn AHCI on in the BIOS.
However it may stop your Windows from booting.

  • Question: Hot swapping drives and backups ......

I have a client that wants to move from a PC server with a NAS to a XServe and a XServe RAID. It is a creative ad agency with less than 500GB of data. The client also wants a backup solution, but does not want to deal with changing tapes. Current backup is to 2 external drives that are swapped every monday ( After the Friday backup ) I cam up with a creative solution for the client but am not sure if it will work.
    My solution is the following:
Install a copy of SuperDuper on the XServe.
RAID Array 1 will be in the first 4 drive bays .... 4x250gb drives in a RAID 5 setup for 750gb of storage.
In the second set of drive bays I propose the following.
    1 500gb drive ( Actually 2 of them )
I want to set up SuperDuper to run a smart backup every Friday night from the Data RAID to the single 500GB drive.
Then on monday, the client can remove the drive from the Xserve RAID and slide in the spare drive.
Both drives will have the same volume name of "Backup"
Backed up drive will be placed in transport box for off site storage, until the following week.
Is this a possibility? Its my understanding that the drives are Hot Swappable, and that if both drives have the same volume name, then SuperDuper should have no problem doing the backup without need for additional scripts.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?

    Reese,
Not taking it argumentative at all, your correct, I came for advice.
According to Apple Enterprise Support a JBOD disk will automatically mount on a XServe RAID when plugged in.
I dont think the user is confused by firewire cables, just that its more work for the customer. In fact they are already doing a weekly backup to external drive and swapping them every monday. This is something the client specifically wants to get away from however.
Resse, I value your advice and input, thanks for taking the time to reply.
The client however wants to get away from external drives and does not want to go to tape backup and juggle those.
I could label the two swappable drives to help avoid confusion. Using only the first 4 drives in the 1st controller does leave some room for growth. But I do get your point.
I would love to go with something else, If I could come up with something that doesnt involve External drives or tape. We had looked at offsite backup, but was unable to find something that worked with Macintosh and was cost effective for 500gb of data storage
Any other ideas besides the firewire drives?

  • Time Machine/hot ext drive

I have a brand new (5 days) Verbatim external hard drive connected to my Macbook.
From the beginning it has seemed to be hot when running. The first back up took several hours, so this was understandable, but since, when Time Machine is set to back up hourly, the drive case is still very hot. Almost too hot to touch. I emailed the store who said it was normal.
I decided to eject the drive for a while but in so doing I noticed that the hard drive was spinning all the time. Is this normal? I imagined it would spin only for the few minutes it took to make the hourly backup.
Assuming this is wrong (as I do) is this a matter of settings? Can it be set? If not, where is the fault? I have recently installed Lion though well before the new drive.

It will be transferred onto the OSX volume you're running from.
Are you using Setup Assistant, when your shiny new Mac first started up, or did you skip that, create a user account, and are now using the Migration Assistant app?  If the latter, you'll end up with an extra user account, and the transferred account will probably lose permission to files on other drives, especially the backups.
See Problems after using Migration Assistant.  You may want to start over, per the green box there.

  • Logitech trackman marble usb mouse not hot swappable?

Hot swaping works fine with other mice (Kensignton expert mouse trackball, etc).
With Logitech trackman marble t-BC21, when you unplug in and plug it back in, 90% of the time it locks the Mac, needing to reboot by holding down the on/off button.
Any ideas? I need it to be hot swappable to work with a KVMP switch.
    Thanks
    bob

Are you using a driver from Logitech? I have the same Marble Mouse, but used with 'USB Overdrive'; also a Microsoft Mouse with the MS driver, and a Wacom tablet; all co-exist happily and can be hotplugged. The MS driver only affects the mouse, over-riding USB Overdrive (which is set up lef-handed while the mouse is right-handed). Possibly it's the Logitech driver which is acting up?

  • Hot-swappable Battery?

I had a 15" PowerBook G4, and one of my favorite features was the hot-swappable battery -- if you needed to switch to a spare battery, you could just close the lid, quickly take out the old battery and put in a fresh one.
I've tried this on my MacBook Pro, and every time I do it shuts down on me.
My question is, does this mean that battery hot-swap isn't supported? Or is there some small internal battery in my MacBook Pro (that would allow this) not functioning properly?

The MBPs can in fact hot-swap batteries. While it doesn't exactly work the same as the PowerBooks it does work fine and in some ways it's better than the PBs. If you have disabled Safe Sleep then this is your problem as you need it. With a Safe Sleep, everything in RAM gets copied to hard drive so when it loses power, all can be restored. So, all you need to do is to sleep your MBP, and when your remove the battery, yes it just shuts off, however, when you return a battery and push the power button it will restore properly from Safe Sleep.
The PBs did it differently and used the PRAM battery to maintain sleep, for around a minute or so, while you swapped batteries. The MBPs can be in Safe Sleep indefinitely.

  • MSI K9N SLI Platinum - SATA not hot-swappable?

can i get a confirmation that K9N SLI Platinum motherboard does NOT support hot-swapping the SATA drives. I switched to this board for the AM2 socket and now i am not seeing the removable drive bays as hot-swappable (ie. no green arrow down by the clock). maybe i am missing a bios setting?

I check two machines today and one is just fine using the removable trays and any drives we put in there show up in the 'safely remove hardware' tool. the other machines does NOT detect any drives inserted while the machine is powered on and something else - under the 'policies' tab the top two choices ('optimize for quick removal' instead of 'optimize for performance') are greyed out but there is an option below them that i can check and uncheck (i cannot remember the exact title of this option).
I assume you are trying the same drives when you swap the removable trays between the two machines.  Some drives have a jumper that has to be removed to enable SATA II operation, so if they aren't the same physical drives you might want to check that.
I think the stuff below the greyed out area in your 'Policies' tab is a check box that enables/disables write caching.  You might want to try checking/unchecking that.
Also, you should check out the IDE/ATA Controller selection in the Device Manager.  Take a look at each instance of controller that shows up there.  SATA controllers actually a primary and secondary channel and each channel has a master and a slave drive, just like old IDE controllers.  Look at each tab on both machines and make sure all of the drive's features are set identically on these tabs.  Sometimes Windows can try to outsmart you. For example, I have an SATA II Maxtor drive that has its transfer mode downgraded to SATA I by Windows (there is a little yellow triangle with a '!' in the middle of the lower part of the panel).  The help balloon for this arrtibutes it to 'excessive transfer errors.'  I haven't tried to chase that one down yet, however.
As far as setting the machines up the same way, sometimes the sequence of driver installations can have an effect.  For example, a RAID driver installed during Windows setup using the 'F6 - install other driver' option can behave differently from one installed with the Device Manager 'Update Driver' function.
Sorry I can't be of more help here.
Maybe someone else in this forum is a bit more knowledgable on the subject.

  • Ts440 70AQ000BUK info on Hot Swap drives

I have just purchased a TS440 70AQ000BUK online and am wondering about the Hot Swap drive bay. Does this machine come with caddy's i can install my own drives in or do i need to procure caddys. if i need to procure caddys can someone advise the Lenovo part number and or provide a link to where i can procure them from. Lastly this machine permits 4 hot swap drives, is it possible to connect 1 or 2 drives directly to the mother board too? can i replace the Optical drive with disk?
This is a UK spec machine and i am in the UK. the manuals i have seen so far are very vague on the detail i have requested above.
    Thanks in advance

  • How to make MySQL JDBC Driver case-insensitive

    Hi,
I'm porting a jdbc application from oracle to mysql. One of the problem is that oracle's column names are case insensitive, whereas CODE in mySql is different from code (see example posted below).

One of the problem is that oracle's column names are
case insensitive, whereas CODE in mySql is different from code (see example posted below).I doubt that.
SQL standards are rather specific that columns names are case insensitive unless quoted identifiers are used. And presumably you are doing that.
What you are seeing is a difference in drivers not databases.
I would guess that the only way to change the behaviour is to modify your code. If you uppercase everything it should work. Or you could use positional rather than named column extraction.

  • Pulling hard drive and installing in hard drive case

My 5-year old 700 MHz CRT iMac has died. I'm mulling over the alternatives, from dumping it, to fixing it, to replacing it. For one piece of the puzzle I need more information, and I'm hoping someone here can help.
As I understand it, I can pull the hard drive (the problem is definitely not the hd) and put it in a hard drive case thus converting it to an external USB or firewire drive for another computer (I'm sending this from a G5 iMac). Do I have that right? And if I do that will the data on the drive still be accessable - in other words, can I transfer the data from the old drive to the new computer? In case you haven't figured this out yet, it's data that was not backed up.
Assuming that I have the basic idea right, is there anything else I need to know? I'm guessing that when I pull the drive I'll be able to identify exactly what kind of case to get. Are there recommended brands or are they all pretty much the same. Recommended retailers?
    Thanks for the help.
iMac 700 MHz (CRT)   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You can certainly do that. The iMac has standard IDE/ATA HD, so you can get almost any enclosure, put it in there, and then recover your data. It will be completely readable. In fact, since it was an internal drive with all the system data on it, you could even boot your G5 iMac from an external FireWire drive - assuming that it is OS X on the G3 iMac.
I like the Mercury Elite Pro enclosures from OWC found HERE. I have had one for the last few years and it has performed very well. One thing that you should look for when buying an enclosure if make sure it has the Oxford 911 chipset and not the more common - and less expensive - Prolific chipset. The Oxford is more compatible with more systems. Some users have not been able to get the Prolific chipset to work while some have, but not been able to boot their Macs with it. Avoid the hassle and get the better Oxford chipset.

  • Are there certain external Hard Drive cases that aren't compatible with Mac

I have a new 160gb Hitachi hard drive and connected it to a Vantec NexStar usb 2.0 hard drive case (borrowed from a friend).
Disk Utility sees the external disk...however, whenever I try to Erase or Partition, the Disk Utility hangs. In Activity Monitor, it shows up as "not responding". I even left it over night to see if it recovers itself but no luck. I've tried the MacOS Extended (journaled), MacOS Extended, and MS-DOS types.
I'm wondering if this case is incompatible with Macs? I would prefer a case that has firewire though...so I might just buy a new case to try?
Has anyone run into something similiar?
    Thanks!

Thanks for the idea...not sure why I didn't try that.
My new iMac recognized the drive immediately and asked if I wanted to initialize it. Took about 2 minutes. When I connected it to my MBP, it saw it right away...
I'm still not sure why the MBP couldn't initialize the drive when I tried...
Oh well, important thing is..it's working now..and I've backed up my iTunes and iPhoto libraries.
    Thanks again!

  • Is X2-10GB-SR transcevier hot swappable on WS-C4948-10GE switch?

The product document on Cisco switch mentions only Fan tray and power supply as hot swappable but not GBIC.
Does switch allow hot swap on gbic?

Typically, when "hot swappable" is mentioned, it means that these items can be replaced while not impacting the operation of the system.
When an optics module is pulled, traffic will be impacted. Depending upon the system's configuration, the traffic will need to re-converge.
The optics modules can be installed or removed while the system is powered up.
    Hope this helps.

  • ASR 1006, are the SIP and SPA cards Hot-swappable?

I can find references that the SPA cards should be hot-swappable in the form of documents stating you should shut down traffic before removing, but I can not find any clear reference that states that the SPA and the corresponding SIP modules can be pulled while the chassis is on.

Both modular SIPs and SPAs are hot-swappable in ASR1K:

(Text in the second link begins with "Cisco 7600 series router SIPs and SPAs", but that's a typo, the book is about ASR1K (the statement isn't wrong though - SIPs and SPAs are hot-swappable in the 7600 series as well))
