  • IOS 5.1.1 upgrade: hot while usage and battery drain

Since iOS 5.0.1 I never had. Artery problem. I used my iPhone from 12.2011 without any battery issues. But after recent upgrade to 5.1.1 I found that while using usual apps, including very simple like card game, my iPhone became very, uncomfortable hot near sim slot location. I was tried to reinstall sim card several times - no effect. Battery drain now terrible in active mode, about 1 percent per one or couple of minutes.
In a sleeping mode all the same - less than 0.5% per hour, but if to start using any application, device became hot and drain starting.
Any similar thigs or ideas? I read a discussion when two recharge cycles solved this problem, but it doesn't help me.

here is a general description of the batteries. it is expected that sometimes the product will get warm, especially when charging. Another thing to look at is multi-tasking which could be the result of some battery drainage, bluetooth running in the backround, a high brightness setting, wi-fi ALWAYS enabled even when outside of a wi-fi zone especially because it will be constantly searching for networks. For information about multi-tasking, try this:

Worst comes to worst, try transfering all of your information to the computer, and try a restore as new, than transfer your information back to the iphone in the event it could be a software issue. here are some helpful articles to help you with this.

  • IPhone 5 Continued Problems - Unable to Sync and Battery Drain

It seems that my iPhone 5 went to crap after the last iOS 6.1.2 update.
Battery life took a turn for the worse. No consistency in usage and standby time and battery drain.
But now, for some reason and I don't know if it's iTunes, I have been unable to sync and back-up for two weeks now. After going through all the syncing steps, all 7, it kicks back and error message: "iTunes could not back up the iPhone "My Name" because an error occurred."
    No error code. Nothing.
Any ideas what I can do to fix it?

I got a new iPhone 5 about 3 weeks ago. I notice that from time to time in my pocket it heats up high enough I can feel it trough the material, but not as to burn.  I read in a post in this fuorum that this hapened for some iPhones after they updated to the new IOS either when is recharging or some blame it on heavy gaming. Mine was not recharging and no game apps open, just the usual iTunes, Messages and phone as usual when I carry it. It happens about every other day, I can feel it through my pocket and soeme times when I am holding it it is quite hot. After a couple of minutes it seem to cool off again. it just does not seem right. (Im posteing in different discussion to see where I get an answer before taking it to the geniuses )
PS: Dave049 I'll try your suggestion and try re-adjusting the SIM card . if it works I let you all know. thaks for the idea

  • Data usage and battery drain has skyrocketed with iOS 8.1.2 (maybe earlier)

3 weeks ago my wife got a text message on her iPhone 5 from AT&T that she had used 90% of her data for the month.  30 seconds later, she got another one saying that she had used 100%.  Granted, her data plan is small, 200 MB.  But, for the last two years she has used as little as 17 MB in a month and her largest prior to this latest month was 49 mb.  This month she got to 380 mb before we were able to shut off her cell data.  Otherwise, a second chunk of 200 MB and another $15 would have been added to the month.
We had noticed that her battery had been draining rather rapidly in standby mode with no background apps running when she didn't have access to WiFi.  We have now correlated the two results, High Cell data usage, Quick battery drain and very warm phone.  In case anyone is wondering about her iPhone 5 being one in the recall, it is.  I took it in and had it tested.  Apple says the battery is fine.  It does hold a charge well.  When all network communications are shut down on her phone and it is in standby mode, there is no noticeable loss of charge in 24 hours (our longest test).
Since I have a grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan with AT&T, I have been doing some testing on my iPhone 5s.  Sure enough, I've seen similar results.  With nearly everything turned off except Cell Data, I've seen 483 MB used in 24 hours.  Of that total, 479 MB was used for Documents & Sync.  I even have everything turned off in my iCloud account, Location services are turned off, no push notifications etc...
The best I can figure, this has been a problem since we installed 8.1.2 and yesterday I installed 8.1.3 resulting in no positive effect on this issue.
At this rate of data usage and no access to WiFi, my wife would have to have a 15 Gb data plan to keep from exceeding her limit.  I don't think AT&T even offers one that big anymore.  I might have to switch to Sprint or T-Mobile if this doesn't get resolved.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance for your shared insights.

Hey this is Brian, bjmcmurry, under a different user ID.  If I logged in as bmcmurry, original post, I was just getting a server error and couldn't get to this discussion nor post a comment anywhere.
Anyway, let me be as brief as I can.  After an extensive analysis of replicating the problem on another phone to eliminate it being a hardware specific issue and that the test phone has an unlimited data plan, I was able to stop the excessive data usage and consequential battery drain.  I believe I have a reasonable explanation of the problem, an iOS logic bug.
I had everything under my control clamped down on the test phone to minimize data usage.  Also, I was forcing all data usage to use the cell towers.  I determined that I was burning at least 11 to 13 Mb per hour doing nothing important.  I literally had everything turned off except 'Settings' was allowed to use Cell data providing a avenue to log into the Apple ID.
The two phones had 2 things in common, they were using the same Apple ID and the same version of the OS.  One was a iPhone 5 and the other was a 5s.
Here is a synopsis of my experience via my written evaluation of the Apple support system (Apple Rep name's have been removed):
After a couple of hours on the phone with an Apple Care Senior support Analyst, it was suggested that I go to the Apple Store to 1) get my battery replace in the iPhone 5 since it qualified for the replacement program and 2) see if the Genius could provide me with any insight in the data usage issue and battery drain.
I'm certainly glad I had multiple reasons to visit the closest Apple store, a 45 min drive.  I got the battery replaced, thanks for that.
Regarding the important issue to me that brought me to the Genius Bar, excessive Cell data usage, I thought the Genius did a wonderful job listening and documenting the problem we were experiencing.  Unfortunately, educating us on the use of the product or replacing our phone was not going to solve the problem.  He eventually figured it out, this was not a user error or broken hardware.  We surmised that the reason I was sent to him was to verify and document that there was a problem.  I clearly had a problem.  After writing copious notes on the issue, The Genius smartly referred me back the the AppleCare Senior Advisor.  So, back to AppleCare Senior Analyst I went. She, knowing this was not a simple problem to solve i.e. beyond her level of expertise, got an Apple Software engineer involved.
My primary frustration is that this should have been escalated to software engineering right away.  My trip to see the Genius was, I believe, a waste of time for both me and Apple regarding this issue.  Diagnosis of this type of problem is well beyond the Genius’ knowledge and job.  The Genius did a very good job doing what he could within the scope of his job.  He just couldn’t solve this problem and had no one within Apple to which he had access for help.
However, that initial consult with the engineer was a bit feeble.  Not only could I not talk to him/her directly, his/her focus was still working with the ‘Black Box' approach.  Having Analyst ask me to do stuff like restore the Phone was more like trying to find a 'work around' than 'identifying the real problem.'  Maybe restoring the phone was going to fix some corrupted data on the phone sidesteping the real problem, the handling of this condition.  The engineer did listen to the fact that I had restored the test phone, the 5s, and only added the use of my Apple ID.  Duh, been there!!!
Having been an previous owner of a software development company that I started in 1980 and retired in 2001, I can tell you that using the 'Black Box' method of debugging is extremely inefficient.  Instead, having access to an ‘Activity Manager’ type app to identify in real time what process was blowing up the data flow would have saved me a lost afternoon at the Apple store and hours on the phone with tech support.
Ironically, I may have stumbled onto a "work around" solution short of turning off Cell Data that stopped the excessive Cell Data usage and consequential battery drain.  Just prior to leaving the Apple Store, I used one of their Macs to log in my Apple ID on the id.apple.com website to ‘Manage my Apple ID’, I was forced to upgrade the security level of my password.  Afterward, my cell data usage seemed to drop dramatically.
I told the AppleCare Senior Analyst that I may have stumbled onto a workaround and I suggested that I give it a couple of days of monitoring.  We'd talk then and I would have results to report.  She agreed.
Sure enough, my Document & Sync usage was back to normal, about 1/2 Mb per day.  Am I happy that the excessive Cell Data usage has stopped?  You bet!  But, there was no intuitive reason that an end user would know to log in on the ID website to unknowingly solve this problem.  As I use to say to my employees, that is not the ‘Macintosh Way.’  And, rebooting the the 'Microsoft Way.'
When I reported my findings to the Analyst, we both concluded that data usage was back to normal.  She did report to me that the engineer did provide a laundry list of suggested activities to help solve the problem.  Remarkably, they were everything that I had already done and were pretty much what the Analyst and the Genius tried to do.  All reasonable tasks.  But clearly, the engineer hadn't even ready the notes on the case before responding.  And, none of the things suggested would have uncovered the real problem, likely a logic bug in iOS.
My advice now is to have the software engineering team rule out that there was an unresolvable state that a background process was fiercely trying to handle.  The iOS does not seem to know how to intervene and prompt the user with a requirement to upgrade their password.  If this does end up being the case, I would call it a logic bug, a perpetual exception that is not being handled properly.
Anyway, I hope this helps you.

Anyone having same problem? I phone 4 after updating to Vers.5.1.1. battery cannot be 100% full charge, always stop at 99% and battery drains off fast too

I had major issues with the iPhone 4s battery, however it’s resolved.
The tech who set the phone up at the Apple store did so with little training.
if you have a mobile me account. First go and move all your data to the cloud by going on your computer and logging in at me.com/move. The cloud has replaced mobile me, so there is no need for those two accounts
Also make sure that for any of your email accounts you set them up to fetch, not push. My tech person set them all to have the email servers push data to the phone. The new iphone4s antenna is extremely strong so it will continually try to access stuff that is pushed–***** a lot of battery life doing this. It makes it worse if you have exchange 2010 accounts. Something about changes made to exchange really suck battery life from devices that access such accounts.
turning of locator and the push notifications from facebook--they have a lot!

  • IPod Touch 4G and battery drain

I'd appreciate some feedback regarding battery drain.
A couple of months ago I bought myself the iPod Touch 4G (64Gb) which I mainly use for listening to my music and I'm quite happy with it.
Last week I decided to get my granddaughter the same, albeit the 32GB model, for her birthday which was last Tuesday. I seldom have to charge mine but she seems to charge hers every day only getting maybe 5 hours use from a charge. Now it may be due to the way she uses it which is why I'm asking for feedback.
I put a few games on it along with her music and at the moment she seems a bit addicted to it, possibly because this is a novelty. I've noticed she plays the games constantly and when listening to her music she tends to do so without the headphones. I realise that video and internal speaker uses a lot more battery power, so, based on this, how long should she expect to get on a full charge.

Yes, heavy usage will cause the battery to drain faster. Games utilize heavy graphics and don't allow the screen to dim or turn off
Also it will depend on things like brightness, location services, whether wifi is always turned on etc.

  • Lost of voice signal iOS8 NO SERVICE and Battery Drain

I have an iphone 5, updated last week to iO8 , now I have seen battery drain much faster, after I just had Apple replace the old battery under the replacement program with a brand new one !!!, (if you had purchased an iPhone in Jan 2013), now I'm noticing that I am losing the AT&T voice and data signal, NO SERVICE !!! Apple what's going on here ??

    Hello, iswho.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Battery life can be difficult to troubleshoot as multiple factors contribute to how long a charge can last.  Graphic intensive applications, display brightness and data connectivity are just a few of the items that can cause the battery life to decrease rapidly.  I would need to know a little more information about your usage patterns to give you and idea on how to maximize battery life.  However, here are some tips on how to adjust settings and charge the device that may help.
    Resolving issues
If your battery doesn't charge, or if your device shows a low-battery image, black screen, or "accessory not supported" alert, follow these steps.
Inspect the connector at the bottom of the phone:
Make sure that there are no bent pins in the connector.
Make sure that the connector is free from debris.
If there are bent pins or debris, please contact Apple Support.
    Otherwise, continue troubleshooting.
Make sure that the outlet you're using works.
Make sure that the Apple USB cable and Apple USB power adapter work.
Plug the device in to power and let it charge until your device turns on. This could take between 10 and 30 minutes. If you don't have an Apple USB power adapter, try connecting to a computer's high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be on.
If the device still exhibits an issue, try turning your device off and then on again while connected to power.
If the issue persists, please contact Apple Support.

  • IOS7 Palattes: Why default to max brightness and battery drain?

After upgrading to iOS7 today my brightness slider was set to its maximum setting. I didn't think anything of it until I reduced it to 1/2 which is where I normally keep it to save on battery. I typically never have to change it even when outdoors. Today I received the surprise of a lifetime: It needs to be at near maximum just to see details like the call status bar. The WHITE text on the BRIGHT green bar is absolutely horrible and near impossible to read. I was hoping that I could change the color scheme of the status bar palettes but no luck. The best I could manage was to change the background wallpaper to a near black color that helped out only a tiny bit. What a waste of Retna display.
I can no longer use product this in an airplane cockpit for flight planning. I will have to abandon my planned purchase of an iPAD mini  with Retna unless I can get iOS 6 on it
In the day light these new white screen backgrounds require loads more brightness to be able to see details and therefore causing unexpected battery drain not to mention creating a hazard of a night blindess (old scheme had dark backgrounds light text instead of other way around)..
    Questions:
    - How do we get rid of the white screens that require max brightness to see detail?
    - How do we get customizable palattes? Customer knows better than Apple -- my eyesight can't handle white text and bright backgrounds for status bars.
    - Will Apple see this as a priority one issue and give us CHOICES on the PALATTE schemes?

    Hello,
I am currently an owner of an Ipod Touch 4th generation.
I have had battery drain problem on the Ipod Touch 4th generation.
But, I found a solution that works for me:
Do the IOS update (the one that is the latest, or if you already did, then proceed to step 2)
Reset All Settings: SETTINGS>GENERAL>RESET>RESET ALL SETTINGS
Use it until it dies (automatically shuts off)
    Plug into Charge
Leave it 1.5 hours or longer after it reaches 100% --> Undisturbed (preferably overnight)
Give it a few days to Calibrate
This has helped me on my Ipod Touch 4th generation, running IOS 6.0.1
The battery seems to give me 2 days 30 hours of standby, and 10 hours and 15 minutes of usage.
    Thats pretty good!

  • Touch 2G battery drain

I own a Touch 2G that I rec'd secondhand.  It's my first Touch, so I have very little experience with the model.  The problem is battery drain.  I can only get about 45 min - 1 hour useage, before it needs to be charged again.  Even when it's powered off, the battery still seems to drain.  I assumed I needed a new battery, but it didn't help at all.
Is there anything I can do?

    David. wrote:
You just diagnosed your problem, then!
No, he hasn't. I listen to music to fall asleep, right after surfing web for about 2 hours and keep wi-fi on all night, and my battery never drains that fast, I usually charge it ones in every 3 days or so.
To the original poster, check in your settings to see if it's pushing emails, fetching new data, that might be draining your battery.

  • IOS 7.0.6 sound, powering down, and battery drain issues

Since updating my 4s to iOS 7.0.6 I'm having trouble with my sound.  While I'm trying to watch YouTube videos or Netflix, one minute it will be ok then the next it will just go silent.  It's almost like it thinks there are headphones in the jack but there aren't and when it does this I can't even turn the volume up or down.  I've tried everything I can think of... Hard reset, killing the apps, searched in the settings, ect.  I don't know what to do and it starting to really irritate the living **** out of me because it never did this before the 7.0.6 update.  Also since the update I installed I've been having serious issues with my battery draining at a very rapid rate and this too I've killed all the apps running in the background, lowered the brightness, and all other battery stuff I can think of.  AND on top of all of that since this new ******** update I can't even turn my phone off!  I slide it to power off and it acts like its going to shut down like normally, the screen goes black and all looks good and then wouldn't you know it the apple logo pops back up about 3 seconds later with out even touching the phone.......... SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

I have an an iPad air and I updated it to IOS 7.0.6
    - no battery draining issues

  • Iphone 4 from sprint and battery drain issues

how many people out there bought a new iphone 4 from sprint and having the rapid battery drain issues?  there is a big thread on the 4s but not as much on the 4 and im trying to decide if its best to just exchange it or try more fixes.

I have the same issue. I am with sprint. The battery goes down in 6 hours, mostly in standby and some emails. I can actualy see the battery meter going down every 30 sec when reading my mails. iCloud is disabled as also push notification. The phone gets also hot. This issue is completely stupid and remember, I had iPhones for the last 3 years. My last one was the 4. It is first time I have such a problem. My friends that have the 4S with AT&T do not have that problem. As a mater of fact, I compared today and mine goes down 50% faster. I will have to return it and switch to another provider.
