Hotmail and gmail

I can't get either to download to mail. When I start mail, it wants me to set up an account. I can't enter preferences at all. I don't know why the POP part to gmail doesn't work - I have enabled POP on gmail and followed directions on the apple mail side, but it doesn't work. At SMTP, it's a disaster, as there is no panel to change ports, which I need to do.
For hotmail, I have installed the http plug-in, and enabled rosetta in hopes it would work, but I have no http option when I begin the process of entering my accounts into the setup page, only POP, IMAP, and exchange.
What am I doing wrong?

Mail's Setup "Assistant" is a real pain, as there is no way to avoid it when setting up Mail for the first time. It's even worse considering that Mac OS X requires you to get access to Mail's preferences in order to set another mail client as the default, but you cannot do that without setting up an account in Mail first -- total nonsense.
Just in case, let me tell you that the Mac OS X 10.4.7 Update introduced connection issues as a result of (according to the documentation) "Mail now supports connecting to mail servers through a SOCKS proxy". If that's the problem, you must go to System Preferences > Network and disable the SOCKS Proxy in the network configuration used to connect to the Internet, if it's enabled.

Finally, note that you can just let the Setup "Assistant" to time-out. It takes a considerable amount of time, but you can just let it show its stupidity while you do something else.

I accidentally uninstalled firefox and thunderbird whilst cleaning. can i reinstall or recover my hotmail and gmail emails?

I accidentally uninstalled both firefox and thunderbird during a clean up. I am now trying to reciver my previous hotmail and gmail emails. Having used Outlook and re set my email accounts it has synched and 'pulled' up emails from gmail back to August and Hotmail back a month.
Is there any way of recovering the older emails?

Re-install Thunderbird, add the accounts again.
We don't know if you were using POP or IMAP.
IMAP will show you any messages on the server.
POP would have stored messages on your computer. You could recover these by importing the mailbox files for the previous instance of the account, so long as your "clean up" didn't also remove the profile.

Hotmail and Gmail as Exchanges

Hi, I have configured hotmail and gmail as exchange accounts so to sync or use my google contacts on my iPhone 4S (5.1.1).
Latetly when I try sending emails using gmail they are being sent via hotmail exchange instead of m.google.com. I don't remember until when this was working but was working atleast before 5.1.1.
Currently I have my hotmail account disabled/inactive (by switching off mail) to make my gmail work as it should be.
Will appritiate your help in addressing this issue.
I have deleted both accounts and setup from scratch one after another and issue still remains

I had the same exact problem after updating to iOS 5.1.1. I called into Apple Care (2-3 hrs) and went to the Genius Bar (2hrs). They all claimed it was my fault for forwarding email accounts. One suggested solution was to restore and setup as new, yet the problem still occured after I let them restore the iPhone. Some how I believe in iOS 5.1.1 the active sync is messed up. Everyone instead of taking ownership of the problem all says it's Hotmail's issue or Gmail's issue. Why is it not Apple's issue who wrote the code for iOS 5.1.1? Prior to v5.1.1 they didn't have a Hotmail (Exchange) setup. It was setup via smtp/mapi. The simple reboot inbetween adding/removing accounts works. (IMHO, this sounds like an Apple iOS issue to me.)

No idea what I'm doing wrong! Any help would be great.

Port 25 may not work on some WiFi hotspots or the EDGE network, or may only send to some recipients but not others. Many email providers will also set up their SMTP servers to listen for authenticated connections on either port 465 or 587.

Had Hotmail and Gmail on IPAD. Deleted Hotmail which removed all contacts

On OS5 on IPAD. Don't understand why Apple software would delete all contacts and reminders when deleting just 1 Email account on IPAD. I had deleted Hotmail from IPAD until I can get rid of everyday junk mail recently showing up.. After deleting Hotmail account Hotmail is showing up as a folder, and of
course, with no contents.. How can I get contacts and reminders back without doing job manually???

It is designed this way so you can have separation of contacts. I have work email and personal email on my phone.
Each email account can be used as a container for contacts. If you switch employers you can remove your work email and all of its associated contacts will be removed with it leaving your personal or other email account contacts alone.
This takes some attention from the user when creating a new contact if you want it to be a part of a specific group/email account, you will need to press the group button in contacts then have only the group you want to add the contact to selected. Go back into contacts and press the + button and your created contact will be added to that group.
Folks at my work run into this problem from time to time on Androids. They will have the phone set to add contacts to the phones contact list instead of Exchange. When the phone goes kaput, their contacts are gone with it (or they need to be recovered from the carrier if backed up). If they were in exchange, they would be resynced when we set up a new phone.

It sounds as if you may be using POP rather than IMAP. POP email accounts do not stay in sync across devices. IMAP accounts do.
For Gmail, log into your Gmail account on your computer, go to Settings>Forwarding and POP/IMAP. Make sure that you have IMAP enabled. You'll need to check with Hotmail to see what the similar settings would be.

I want to save a page from my email (gmail and hotmail) and it won't do it. Firefox used to save it. It saves a page that I can not open. This is on 2 different computers.

You are looking for a .html file to open (probably named index.html), otherwise you do not have the full site.

The only think I've done recently is install a different antivirus program and uninstall the old one which had expired. Not sure if this is linked to the problem...?

Have a firewall, check that Thunderbird has full internet access, not some Auto rubbish that somehow fails.

Problem with Apple Mail and GMail

Can anyone help me with the following problem. I use Apple Mail as my client and GMail iMap as my server. When I create mails I often get a problem (I think caused by the trackpad) where the mouse jumps and I seem to generate a spurious draft email. The result is that I have a mailbox called "All Mail" in the Mail sidebar which contains over 10,000 messages, even though I only have a few hundred real messages (inbox, sent and spam) and my drafts folder is empty. In this mailbox there are numerous versions of the same emails saved during the creation of the email, all slightly different. I just don't understand what is going on.

POP access on yahoo accounts is not free. A yahoo mail plus account is needed.
As far as I am aware Hotmail does not allow any POP access at all. I couldn't find any specific information on POP access in Hotmail's help site.

Hi jlthompson! Can you explain a bit more details on POP and IMAP issue that you've mentioned? You mean if I use POP mail server then my INBOX will synced wirelessly but if I use IMAP protocol then all the folders will be synced.

Currently I'm using Gmail in BB and using POP protocol. My INBOX and SENT items are synced. Same this is happening for my Hotmail and Yahoo! Yahoo is using IMAP but what mail is probably HTTP...I'm not sure.
Please explain in detail.

Was very excited when I got this palm from ebay and read thru the instruction manual and have done a lot of searching but can't find the answer to this: How do I get my hotmail and yahoo email to show up on my Tungsten C thru versamail.
For Hotmail Under Account Set up I have
Account Name: Hotmail
Mail Service: Other
Protocol: POP
synchronize only accounts unchecked
User name my email address w/@hotmail.com
Password: Entered and it says Assigned
Email address: my email address

Then it says "your hotmail account is completed...."

I just set up my Gmail account on my TX using Versamail, and it works seamlessly. In the setup screen, US gmail is a service option to select, which then automatically prefills all of the server and security settings shown below. The version of Versamail on your Tungsten C is older so it might not have all these options, but here are the settings:
Account name: Gmail
Protocol: Pop
Username: your gmail username (just the name, not the @gmail.com)
Password: your gmail password
email address: [email protected]
incoming mail server: pop.gmail.com
outgoing mail server: smtp.gmail.com
incoming server settings:
Port number 995
Use Secure Connection (SSL): check
Use Authentication (APOP): uncheck
outgoing server settings:
port number: 25
Use Secure Connection (SSL): check
Use Authentication (ESMTP): check
username: [email protected]
password: your gmail password
Those are all of the available settings in Versamail on the TX, which is Versamail version 3.1C
Hope this helps. If it doesn't work, you could see if SnapperMail will work. It's a third-party email app which is very robust and has a free trial period before you buy. Short of that, you might just have to upgrade to a newer device.

N8 and gmail always connect

Hi all.
I have a problem with the N8 and gmail accounts. I've searched in the forum (difficult task!!! ) but I don't find any other with this problem.
If I add a new push gmail account on the phone, and configure it to be checked every 30 minutes, most of the times the phone connect to nokia servers, exchange some bytes, but the connection is not close, or least for 5/20/30 minutes. If I manually disconnect it, then the connection go up again, exchanges some more data, and doesn't disconnect. Finally, at the third time, if I disconnect it again the it connects again, exchange some data and disconnect. Sometimes it works, but most of the times I have to do 1 or 2 manually disconnections to make it works, and the mails are synced only in the last connection...
Is this a known problem or has it a solution? No problem with hotmail accounts or other imap accounts!
I want to add that in October/November all was working fine. It starts giving me problems in approximately second week of December...

OK. So if I understand your original message correctly, you're using option (b) (BTW, don't call it "push" if you using polling - it may confuse some people
I've never used NM with timed synchronization. I used either "push" ("synchronise new updates" on the E75) or manual. With push the connection was, as expected, kept open all the time. With manual the connection was, also as expected, disconnected after synchronizing.
I guess you're issue is not easy to figure out, because you would need to see what's happening in the connection between your mobile and the NM servers.. there is now a beta of Nokia Email 3.05 on Nokia Labs, which includes the option to enable logging.. but the N8 is not shown as supported
