hello,
I recently created a gmail account because it appears to be very easy to use with the iphone's virtually unlimited data plan....but, now that I am attempting to forward my hotmail and university email to my gmail, it doesn't work!!...can anyone guide me through a decision because I would like to keep it all in 1 apps and make things much more efficient to do business with....please help

In order to get Hotmail in the mail app you must have one of their premium, ie paid, accounts. Otherwise Hotmail does not support the POP protocol required to work with the iPhone. It will also not allow forwarding of messages to other accounts. As for your university email its hard to say. Is your university using an exchange account?

I just got my iphone today and I have been working on getting my hotmail account and my university email account linked with my phone, however my phone is blocking this happening. i have therefore tried routing my hotmail through my gmail, but on both ends they will not let me link them....sorry I am a novice when it comes to the email intermingling with the iphone...anyone know anything?

Trying to get Hotmail and Yahoo email on Palm Tungsten C

Was very excited when I got this palm from ebay and read thru the instruction manual and have done a lot of searching but can't find the answer to this: How do I get my hotmail and yahoo email to show up on my Tungsten C thru versamail.
For Hotmail Under Account Set up I have
Account Name: Hotmail
Mail Service: Other
Protocol: POP
synchronize only accounts unchecked
User name my email address w/@hotmail.com
Password: Entered and it says Assigned
Email address: my email address
Incoming mail Server: pop3.live.com
outgoing mail server: smpt.live.com
Then it says "your hotmail account is completed...."

When I hit done and click get mail it says "connecting to mail server" then times out after about 30 seconds.

I just set up my Gmail account on my TX using Versamail, and it works seamlessly. In the setup screen, US gmail is a service option to select, which then automatically prefills all of the server and security settings shown below. The version of Versamail on your Tungsten C is older so it might not have all these options, but here are the settings:
Account name: Gmail
Protocol: Pop
Username: your gmail username (just the name, not the @gmail.com)
Password: your gmail password
email address: [email protected]
incoming mail server: pop.gmail.com
outgoing mail server: smtp.gmail.com
incoming server settings:
Port number 995
Use Secure Connection (SSL): check
Use Authentication (APOP): uncheck
outgoing server settings:
port number: 25
Use Secure Connection (SSL): check
Use Authentication (ESMTP): check
username: [email protected]
password: your gmail password
Those are all of the available settings in Versamail on the TX, which is Versamail version 3.1C
Hope this helps. If it doesn't work, you could see if SnapperMail will work. It's a third-party email app which is very robust and has a free trial period before you buy. Short of that, you might just have to upgrade to a newer device.

I accidentally uninstalled firefox and thunderbird whilst cleaning. can i reinstall or recover my hotmail and gmail emails?

I accidentally uninstalled both firefox and thunderbird during a clean up. I am now trying to reciver my previous hotmail and gmail emails. Having used Outlook and re set my email accounts it has synched and 'pulled' up emails from gmail back to August and Hotmail back a month.
Is there any way of recovering the older emails?

Re-install Thunderbird, add the accounts again.
We don't know if you were using POP or IMAP.
IMAP will show you any messages on the server.
POP would have stored messages on your computer. You could recover these by importing the mailbox files for the previous instance of the account, so long as your "clean up" didn't also remove the profile.

Hotmail and Sky Email on Ipad

I like to keep emails of invoices on my Ipad/Iphone from Play.com etc. I cannot create a folder for them on my Ipad. Am I missing something? I cannot get the folders created on the Hotmail website or Sky email to show on my Ipad so I can move them to it.

One can't create mail folder on the iPad's Mail app. For IMAP mail accounts you can create mail folder on webmail or a computer and sometimes they show up on the iPad. If you have a POP3 mail account any folders you crate elsewhere will not show up on the iPad. You HotMail and Sky mail accounts are likely POP3 accounts.

When I did it for Hotmail, it looked at the email address and found those on it's own.
If you have other accounts that it doesn't recognize simply by feeding it the address, you'll may have to contact those services for support (usually online) and find out what they expect you to use...they are all different.
You can usually type just part of the email after your name into a browser with the word setup (example: @emailsomething.com setup) and check the results.
Also, again, use the built-in help* (?), bottom right on the main prefs panel, for details on where to put server info after you find out the exact data:

Enter the name of the mail server where your messages arrive and wait for you to retrieve them; for example, mail.example.com. This information is typically provided by your email service provider.

Gmail and University Email servers

So I'm running Yosemite and I will specify from the beginning that this is not a hardware issue.
For the university I'm at, the email client is set up through a private application run by gmail. Simply enough, generate a token and use your login credentials to add the account to Apple Mail. However, mail will not accept the password/login combination and continues to say "Cannot connect to account" prompting for a new password every time. IMAP is enabled through the application. The University has provided information to manually set up the account which I have included below. When I go to "other account" and use the information provided, I obtain the same result. When I use the google token on my iPhone, the mail account works without fault, same credentials.
How can I resolve this? I already had it working once but I got a new iPhone and had to generate a new Google token. Naturally when I was prompted by Mail, I entered the new one and it didn't work. I remember having to contact Apple support last time but that was over a year ago and I don't remember how we fixed it. I would rather post a thread here and have the solution available for the rest of the community that to contact them again. It took close to 30 minutes and it was kind of a "work around" solution using manual server information entry. I'm sorry I can't be more specific.
Please help, as it's frustrating having to open all of the universities communications on my phone, and the application is a hassle to log into.

I have set up my Hotmail account and it works flawlessly.
I also set up another email account Under the "Other" type. It RECEIVES emails fine, but when trying to SEND I get a message after a few moments that the Email was Unable to be sent to [email protected], for example, and has been placed in my Outbox. The recipient "[email protected]" was rejected by the server as it does not allow relaying".
I have made sure my Incoming and Outgoing servers have correct Passwords attached.
Any thoughts?

Is the SMTP server for this other account authenticated?
I believe a Hotmail account has an authenticated SMTP server.
Most, if not all ISPs block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network or not provided by the ISP being used for your internet connection at the time unless the account's SMTP server is authenticated with a user name and password as is required when checking the account for new messages. When connected to the cellular network for internet access is not exception in this regard.

Contact your work IT Admin. You have provided absolutely no details for us to help you. We have no idea what the your work email server requires for settings or security. If you were connecting to your work email with another computer the settings will be the same for your new compter.

Anyone else at your university complaining about the same thing? It is more likely someone is stealing passwords by sniffing traffic over the university wifi or with a man-in-the-middle attack or by other means external to your phone. Try a Google search on "steal password" (without quotes) or "steal SSL password" and you'll learn more than you wanted to know about how passwords get stolen.
