Hotmail opens new window not new tab

I have used firefox for a long time and had no problems. Now, all of a sudden when I open my bookmarks or hotmail they open a new window and not a tab. I never changed anything to make this happen it just started happening. I turned my computer on and restarted it but it didn't help. I already tried different things and then I went on firefox support and I read my problem on the forum and what I should do about it. (I have a mac) Someone said to go to about:config and then go to browser.link.open_newwindow and chage it to 3 but when I typed in about:config it says warning this could void your warranty do not go here unless you know what you're doing! Needless to say, I got scared and stopped!!

You posted with an old and no longer supported Firefox 3.0.6 version.
You should update to a more recent Firefox 3.6.6 (or 3.5.10) version.
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

To open the ''about:config'' page, type '''about:config''' in the location (address) bar and press the Enter key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.

If your preferences for Tabs are correctly set (the top two checkboxes are checked) and it's still opening a new window, then it would seem your preferences may be corrupt. In that case, you should quit Safari, go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete the com.apple.Safari.plist file.
Then restart Safari, setup your preferences again, and test to see if it works.

When I do a search, with MSN as my homepage, it pops up in a new window not a tab like it used to. MSN says it is Firefox related. How do I fix this? I have the option selected to open new windows in tabs instead and it still won't work.

That's strange. It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is changing your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal? Also have you tried uninstalling & re-installing flash? If you need help un-installing Flash see http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-player-windows.html. You also could try safe mode. Popups still occur and new windows not in tabs; firefox not secure

After having read the excuse that Firefox can't stop all popups because malware may be calling unpublished APIs,
WHY DONT YOU TREAT INTERNAL window-create APIs as if they were external network requests that require secure key authentication?!?
Since this is a particularly sensitive operation, causing much pain when it is not secured against hackers,
DONT TREAT IT LIKE A TYPICAL INTERNAL API!!!

Hotmail (only) now opens in a window not a tab

As of yesterday - with NO downloads or updates to anything having been made - MSN.com opens Hotmail (when I click the link from that page) in a new window, not a tab. Any link in any email, however, opens in a new tab in the original window. When I og out of Hotmail, it returns me to MSN so the process gets repeated every time I start Firefox & it loads my normal set of tabs. Why has this suddenly started? How do I fix it (return to opening Hotmail in a tab)?

There is no plus sign and going into optins and changing settings has not worked. I have uninstall FF and reinstall-keeping my personalization-and that was no help.

When right clicking to open link in new window (not tab) foxfire immediately switches windows rather than opening new window in background

Just updated to foxfire 15.0, and now each time I open a link in a new window foxfire will switch immediately to that newly opened window rather than opening the new window in the background as it did before I updated to 15.0. I am aware of the option to check or uncheck switching to new tabs immediately, but I am speaking of opening a link in a new window, not tab. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Click the orange Firefox button, and click "Options". This will bring up a new window with a "Tabs" tab at the top. Click that. There will be several checked boxes, including one called "Open new windows in a new tab instead" up at the top of the list. Uncheck that box and you should be good to go.
ETA: This should also work if you click "Tools" and "Options" within your version.

Option to open new window or new tab via right click on taskbar icon in WinXP, Firefox 10 is not available

When I right click on the Firefox tab/icon in the taskbar, there is no option for me to open a new window or new tab. I am only offered the ability to Move, Size, Minimize, Maximize or Close Firefox.

That is the Windows System menu and is maintained by Windows XP.
You need to open Firefox to open a new tab or create a shortcut with the -new-tab or -new-window command line switch if you want to do that via the desktop.

Under options/tabs: open new windows in a new tab instead does not work. many sites open their popups or new windows NOT in a tab as it should. How to solve this, has been a problem in the last versions incl. the latest.

Always enjoyed being able to open new windows in a tab. However, after upgrading found I was no longer able to do this.

Have search all over web and tried every solution I could find; explored addons, restored, even reinstalled 19.0 but I am still unable!
It is very frustrating.
Would appreciate suggestions (never thought I'd say this but Safari is looking good!).

Let me see if I understand the original problem. You can checked the preference on the following tab to divert new windows to tabs instead:
Firefox menu > Preferences > Tabs
And that was not working correctly, either on all sites or a few particular sites.
Note that by default, sites that open a new window with particular specifications, such as the size, bypass that setting. To force even those windows into a new tab, you can use the about:config preference editor.
In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
In the filter box, type or paste '''link.o''' and pause while the list is filtered.
Double click these and set the value as desired:

When i type a url, it open this url every time "chrome://browser/content/browser.xul" and it open the new window in a tab. Please help

Even with 'Open new windows in new tab' unchecked, a new tab opens on everything I click on.

When clicking on link in email, new tab NOT being created, but new window on existing tab - I want NEW TAB for each link clicked on...

Up until today, whenever I clicked on link in email, a NEW TAB would be created. Now, when I click on link, a new WINDOW on existing tab is created - I WANT A NEW TAB, not a window...

Hmmm, which mail site is this?
One possibility is that you had a tab-related extension that automatically opened regular links in a new tab, and that the extension was disabled because it was incompatible with the latest version. To check for disabled add-ons, visit the Tools > Add-ons dialog.
As a short term workaround: you probably know you can force a link to open in a new tab by holding Ctrl when you click the link, or by using the "middle" mouse button (often the scroll wheel). I find that quicker than right-clicking the link and choosing Open in new tab.
