'hotspots' in email html

I've read that using image map 'hotspots' in html email is not such a good idea?
In what email client/s will these fail? I've been studying the code in a boat load of html emails recently and some of the most well known companies in the UK use them in their emailing promotion. This has lead me to test these emails in: Thunderbird, Yahoo, Gmail, AOL - All hotspots work in the afore mentioned email clients.
Based on the tests, to me at least, it seems perfectly acceptable to use image hotspots. Not a very elegant solution but seems to do the job.

Technically it should work in all email clients
That's what I have encountered so far so it's really a choice of whether to use an anchor tag wrapping the image or a hotspot applied to the image.

Is the 'float' css attribute supported in PC email clients?
SnakEyez02 wrote:
I do, however, try to avoid them and stick to strictly table layouts with slices because of Outlook and those tend to work across all email clients.
Well sure, hotspots are a bit ugly and create ugly code to manage so maybe I'll stick with anchor tags. Just really wanted to clarify if they worked or not after reading they should be avoided.

  • How to send existing email html including images

I used the JasperReport to generate a report in html formats.
The html page(containg the data) has a lot of images.
I need to send the html report by emails with the images saved in local drive.
So I used MineMulitipart way, but in existing ways the html part is just a few lines, you can define yourself.
For my stiuation, the html is already there and very complicated, contain mulitiple images.
How do I solve the problem still using MineMulitipart?
    Thanks!

you basically have 2 options for images in HTML emails:
Option 1) you can embed them as file attachments and reference them with no path (only the file name) in the img tag. This is good because the recipient will see the images even if he does not have an internet connection. But this is bad for several reasons: Each email will be large since it contains several attachments, thus large traffic on your SMTP server if the volume is high. Also, many email clients might not support this configuration. I would not normally recommend this option for these reasons, but sometimes this method can be prefferable if the recipient's email client is known to support it (Outlook, Outlook Express), and if the recipient is behind a firewall and does not have internet access.
Option 2) the other, (preferrable) option is to serve the images on a publicly available web server, preferrably on port 80. Reference each image with an absolute URL to the file.
Also note you should attach a .txt Multipart for those email clients which do not support HTML. (pine or elm users stuck in 1987). Note there are issues with mail gateways, as well as different levels of HTML support within the email client itself... mail clients won't support JavaScript either.
    ...good luck!

  • InDesign for pic in email html?

Hi. I picked up the adobe a few months back to create business cards and fliers etc... and maybe do some photoshop things.
I have the cs4 package with fireworks, bridge, photo shop, illustrator, indesign etc....
The cards and fliers worked out well. I created them in inDesign and sent them out as a Adobe PDF preset-  PDF/X1a:2001. to the printer.
With times getting ruff here I also decided to create an e-mail letter and copy and paste the Adobe PDF I created for the business card into the email body. I did a test or two and it seamed to be good.
After pasting and clicking and sending out about 150 emails, I'm getting responses saying the attachment wasn't clear (I didn't think I sent an attachment and that I placed it in the email), or to send more info (which the info was on the card).
So I'm thinking the "card" didn't get through properly.
Is the card in the wrong format? Can I get it from inDesign .indd through the bridge to get it to what I need? What do I need to get it to?
I started reading and think it might have to be html.... then I keep reading and it mentions computers may reject it thinking its spam or something.
If anyone can help out I would appreciate it.
I'm on a Mac Pro 10.5.8  and I'm guessing alot of these emails will be going to people on PC's if that makes a difference.
    email-
    WORDs
PICTURE (in body of email not attachment)(hopefully from indesign so I don't have to redo it)
Thank you for any help in this matter.
    Rich

    1. InDesign isn't really the right tool to create HTML with -- best you can hope for is something to get started with, with a dedicated HTML editor such as Dreamweaver (although I think that's more geared towards creating entire sites, not really a single page).
    2. It entirely depends on the receiver's mail program and settings. At least some mail programs can display a PDF "inline"; but while most can display HTML and images "inline", it's up to the user. If s/he has the mail settings set to accept text-only, even simply styled HTML text won't come through. In addition, some mail servers refuse to pass through attached images.
In Mac OS X mail you can select any 'styled' mail you got and then choose "View -> Message -> Plain text alternative" to see how it appears in the safe "text-only" mode.
    3. Best is to upload your work onto a web site, and *always* provide a link. This is at the very top of the InDesignSecrets newsletter I'm subscribed to:
"Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser."

  • Email HTML Rendering bug?

I have a system that sends me an HTML-formated email everyday. It appears that the IPhone 3G, running 2.2 and 2.2.1, is not able to render that email when it is large. For example, if the size of the email is 380K, the Iphone shows me the email as text (I think without CSS applied). If the size of the email is 19K, then it renders perfectly.
I am connecting to an exchange server.
Has anyone encountered a similar problem?
    Sylvain

I should add that Safari, connecting to Exchange OWA, does render the large email perfectly.

  • Send Smart Forms within emails (html) Problems with format

    Dear all,
the ABAP report SF_XSF_DEMO1 is a demo report which converts a certain smart form into HTML and then sends it as an email in html format.
Sending the email is possible without any problems but I am wondering about the email format.
    <a href="http://www.imgbox.de/show/img/e4QvgzsS4L.jpg" title="Bilder hochladen">This screenshot shows how the email looks like.</a>
I am not happy with the email layout as the Smart Form "SF_XSF_DEMO1" is designed in a different way.
What do I have to adapt within the report in order to send an email that really looks like the Smart Form? Or is it a customizing issue?
(I would like to avoid having to send the Smart Form as PDF attachment...)
    Thanks for you help!
    Kristian Kindler

    Hi Kristian,
When ever you send a smartform output as an HTML email, the system generates automatic style sheets which are not supported in many email clients such as Outlook 2007, hence you will face a formatting issue. We faced the same issue and had do it it like this:
Build a BSP page similar to the output which you want to send as an email. Now you can use the BSP URL to send the html email using cl_bcs class.
I have documented this in my article below-
    http://divulgesap.com/blog.php?p=NDA=
    Hope it helps.

  • Email HTML form as PDF

I've spent 10+ hours researching this, and still can't come
    up with a good solution.

You cannot do a form in an HTML email that will be filled out
    in the email
body and submitted. The best you can do is to email a PDF
    that gets
printed, or email a link to the webpage.

  • Email HTML newsletter using a MAc, iweb? Pages? or ????

    Really need some assistance.
I need to design a HTML newsletter. I've set one up in Pages, however when I save to html the format scrambles.
If I transfer this to PDF or a Jpeg I lose the ability for my readers to click on the hyperlnks to direct them to my website
so I need to use a tool that is as easy to use.
I've tryed iweb, but when I come to use it in the email editor again the pictures disappear or take an age when I try sending, to the degree that I need to cancel the transfer.
How can i create the html email and send it without losing the formatting.

Having pained over this myself, the program is that, you need to use ABSOLUTE LINKS in your HTML code, not RELATIVE. RELATIVE is what iweb is generating, so you actually have to hand code it so the links to images and such point to the ABSOLUTE link. So, instead of, say, an image linking to just: /myprojectfiles/images/test.png, it would need to read http://www.mydomain.com/images.test.png.
It will work if you change your links like that. I just created a page in iweb, and saw that there are about 6 image files, so all those 6 would need to be changed to ABSOLUTE links. I sent it off without touching it, via the Safari Mail Contents of This Page feature, from Apple Mail. Sure enough, no images were displayed. This implies something important: you have to have your files loaded to a server for it to work. That is to say, if you want your HTML emails to display all images, which is essentially the bread and butter of webpages, you need to do 2 things: 1. Load files to server 2. Change all image links to their ABSOLUTE location.

Well, just write the HTML, insert placeholders that are unlikely to appear in a text (e.g. [LASTNAME], [PASSWORD]) and when reading the template (and setting the mail text) replace the placeholders with the real values. Replacing can be easily done with String.replaceAll, see http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/lang/String.html#replaceAll(java.lang.String,%20java.lang.String)

I experience some quality problems printing html formatted mails (not attachments, only standard text). The characters are printed with different free space between every char. There is no special sign or format. It happens from different note/netbooks/iphone.
Pure email-Text-Printing is ok (same text), Attachment-Printing (word-doc arial text only) is ok (same text).
The  printer has the actual firmware, alle computers and iphone are uptodate. Reset is no solution. Problems are reproducable on other hp 6500 series printers.
    See attached example

    kaaemm,
Unfortunately, HTML formatted emails are not currently supported. They may go through and print, but results will vary. Only HTML attachments are supported at this time.

I want to open the default mail client with the HTML content when I click on the button from the form.
I tried MailTo: function but in vain.Is there any other way to do it.

In mailto URLs, you can specify values for (some) headers as query parameters, such as Content-Type. An example for HTML would be:
    Link
If the client does not support HTML composition, this will not work. Likewise, if the client does not support setting the Content-type header, it will not work.
If you want any real control over an email message, you will have to send it from your side. You might find the Mailer Tag Library useful:
