HotSync Blues

Just moved into a new Desktop PC, Vista OS, and have downloaded the Palm Desktop software and my trusty ol' Vx is not talking to my new PC.  Connecting via a USB 'cause I don't have the ol' style cradle, 9-pin serial connector on the back of this new PC.  Any suggestions?   I sometimes get a prompt that says something like, "COM 1 Port is not currently available and HotSync will activate/notify when it becomes available."  I've done a soft reset, the USB connector cable is brand new, checked Device Manager and run "Check for new hardware devices" on the Action prompt, and still no joy.  Help!

Thanks to you all for your counsel.  I've ordered an IR:USB device and will post a thread when I get it and try it out.  It's worth the relative small cost to try it out. . .

Well, sadly, I purchased a IR:USB converter, which installed and works just fine. When I HotSync, the system even shows that it's talking to the Ol' Palm Vx. However, no data transfer occurs! I've even tried to enter as and "Administrator," which results in displaying former existing data on my computer display, but still makes no difference in transferring data. Oh, so close yet so far! I guess the earlier concern that nothing will work with the Vista 64-bit system has proven to be true. Still using the Palm 4.2 and haven't tried the newer/latest version, but am about done with all the time I've spent trying to make it work. Thinking I may make the leap over to Blackberry Storm. . .Any further thoughts/ideas would be helpful.

    Hello Dr. Fission,
Info about a free upgrade toolkit can be found here. This toolkit will help you convert your code up through the different versions of LabVIEW.
If none of these suggestions help, please post the software and versions you are using, the applicable portions of your code, and any other information that may help, and Ill be happy to look further into it.

  • HELP! I am not very good when it comes to this kind of stuff

I own a Tungsten E2. I use it for work and have had no problem in the past with the hot sync manager.  Now it appears I have no hot sync manager and even running the repair doesn't help.  I have Vista not sure if 32 or 64 (I know of those only because I have been asked recently) but do not know how to find out this information.  UGG!  I can't change certain features that I want to change or manage the hot sync manager because apparently it does not exist.  I click on it and it does nothing. I have tried re-installing but it says I already have the newest software available.  What can I do?

Is the blue and red circular icon in the system tray of your pc. If not click on start/ all programs/ palm. Click on the hotsync blue and red icon in the drop down window. If this is of no help there is a trouble shooter for the hotsync in the first post in this section of the forum. http://forums.palm.com/t5/Windows-HotSync/START-HERE-HOTSYNC-TROUBLESHOOTING-START-HERE/td-p/107353

  • !!!SOLUTION !!! Hotsync TE2 with windows 7 (64bit) via blue tooth SOLUTION !!!

I recently struggled with syncing my TE2 with the palm desktop application in windows 7 as many of you have too.
I am using Windows 7 Home Premium, Palm desktop 4.1.4 and a blue tooth dongle.
The solution I found for my problem works like this:
Find a phone that has blue tooth and add it as device on your computer.
    I used a simple Nokia 2630.
The add-proces went well and it automaticly had two COM-ports assigned that it uses for syncing or backup etc.
    I shut down the phone.
Started the hotsync manager from Palm.
Klicked away error messages as that the com-port is in use by another device.
Klicked right in the tray icon for hotsync.
    Select setup.
    Select local.
Then get a message that the port is not available.
After that I can choose a port that IS availlable.
That is one of the ports that was assigned to my Nokia phone.
I select one of these ports and close the setup screen.
I have setup a blue tooth hotsync connection on my TE2.
Hereafter I can sync my TE2 with the Palm desktop 4.1.4 without a problem.
Just don't use the phone and hotsync at the same time.
The only messagfes I got are from docstogo that powerpoint does not work anymore, but you can ignore that message.
After one hotsync these messages don't appear anymore.
I don't start the hotsync program at startup, but start it manually.
I start it in compatibilitymode for Windows XP (Servicepack 3).
Right-klick on desktop icon choose compatilbility, check first box and from the dropdownlist choose Windows XP (Service Pack 3).
    Until now  . . . . . . no problems.
I hope somebody can use this too.
P.S. When you start the hotsync prog it can last a little while before it appears in your taskbar.
    GOOD LUCK !!!!!
    Greetings,
    Jacques

Do you absolutely want to use the slower BlueTooth connection, or would you rather use the USB cable as designed?
Drivers are available now for 64bit systems.  See the top of the Windows HotSync board for "64 bit Palm Desktop drivers are here!"

  • Blue Screen of Death -- Datebook gone, Addressbook in danger

Having some major addressbook/datebook issues with HotSync. I am using a Handspring Visor (the original, old model), Palm Desktop 4.0.1, Windows XP Home. I have not updated any of the hardware/software lately.
A couple days ago, when I synced my Handspring Visor, I got the dreaded "blue screen of death." I rebooted my computer, and then found that the Palm Desktop program wouldn't load. It gave me an error saying the addressbook database could not be opened. The sync log also gave me a series of messages like this:
"Some handheld records were not copied to your PC. Your computer may be full or you may have reached the maximum allowed records on the desktop. To correct this situation, delete some records and perform a HotSync operation again." (Below, I've pasted in the full log from the last couple days so you can see exactly what I mean.)
This morning, I synced the device again, thinking that perhaps the addressbook file had become corrupted and that a sync would clear things up. The answer was ... anything but!
I was able to get the Palm Desktop software to reopen by renaming "addresss.dat" to "address.dba." However, two major problems:
    1) The addressbook on my computer is totally blank. There are three files in the "Address" folder with these extensions: .aba, .dat, and .bak. All of them are only 1 or 2 KB in size. However, this isn't a total loss because my addresses seem to be intact on my handheld.
    2) My datebook has lost ALL data I've entered since roughly January 2008. All my previous years of calendar entries seem to be unaffected. This is the scary part because my handheld AND my desktop both have this problem. I tried the solution of renaming the datebook.bak file to datebook.dba (and giving the current file a .old suffix), but that did not fix the problem. Both files are 355 KB in size. I've also tried setting up a new users and copying over both these files one at a time, but that didn't fix the problem either.
Sadly, I was a fool and didn't backup my Palm files after the blue screen of death the other day; I didn't do it until AFTER that second sync this morning where my datebook data got lost.
Basically, I'm pretty sure I'm screwed about the datebook files. However, I would like to make sure my addressbook doesn't get erased from my handheld. Before my next sync, I feel like I should set the HotSync conduit prefs for addressbook to "Handheld Overwrites Desktop," but I thought I'd get some feedback from y'all before I did that. I am also really curious why I'd lose SOME of my calendar data but not ALL of it? That's the weirdest part to me.
Many thanks for any help you could provide.

When you sync the device to Palm desktop a file is created on the first sync with the extension .dat. When you sync the second time the data in the .dat file is copied to the .bak file. The process is cycled in that order. Each time you sync, the files are overwritten. If you sync once and notice the data is gone, don't sync again because the .bak file should have the recoverable data.
When you rename the files to recover your data you need to rename the files in the following order.
Close Palm Desktop, rename the .dat to .old. Next rename the .bak file to .dat. Reopen palm desktop and see if the data is there.
Try this and see if you can recover the data.
Here is a method for saving your data in a seperate location in case you lose data again.
The best way to preserve your data is to export the data in each category in Palm Desktop to a seperate folder on your PC.
Create a new folder on your PC somewhere that is convenient. Name it something like Palm Desktop Data. CLick on the link below and follow the instructions on that page for the export procedure.
    http://www.palm.com/cgi-bin/cso_kbURL.cgi?ID=28734
With the data saved in the folder you created, make a copy of that folder and save to a flash drive, cd-rw or external hard drive. Anytime you make a change in Palm Desktop, export the data that was changed to that folder and save again to the external media.
With this process you can always import the data back into Palm Desktop anytime you have a problem with the data in Palm Desktop or if your computer/hard drive/device crashes.

  • HotSync Manager Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

    Hello
I have a Palm T|X, running Palm OS  Garnet v.5.4.9
Last night, I tried to install ConvertCalc - CodeThought, Inc., the OS5 version, and it blue-screened my desktop. (running XP Pro)
Now, Hotsync Manager won't run - either at boot-up, or if I try to start it manually.
I have un-installed Palm Desktop (v6.2.2), and tried re-installing it, but when it gets to the HotSync Manager, it crashes with the error in the subject line.
    Any clues ?
many thanks for your time !

  • PALM V / WINDOWS XP HOME HOTSYNC PROBLEM

Out of the blue, my Palm stopped hotsyncing with my G3 Mac  (see http://forums.palm.com/t5/Macintosh-HotSync/PALM-V-MAC-OS9-2-2-HOTSYNC-PROBLEM/td-p/273892;jsessioni...) so I am trying to move everything over to my Windows XP Home machine. I downloaded the Palm Desktop V 4.1.4 and purchased a new Keyspan USA-19HS serial to USB adapter for the cradle. I have the Hotsync Manager set to Local USB and the driver said that I was connected to com 4.
I am at a total loss on what to do to get the hotsync to work and I am totally lost without my PDA.

    Hi,
easiest way to verify that your XP CD has SP2 incorporated is to look at the root directory of the CD for a file named 'win51ip.sp2'.
If there, then it is SP2. If not, well...
And there is a way to make yourself a XP CD with SP2 out of your pre-SP2 XP CD by following these instructions http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxpsp2slipstream.asp
But you have to do it on a Windows PC.
Second possibility, the XP CD you have is an upgrade version, which only installs after a check for an older Windows version.
Unfortunately you can't switch CDs during BootCamp Windows installation due to the impossibility to eject the current CD.
Apple strictly says that such upgrade XP CDs don't work with BootCamp.

  • Vista 64 Hotsync solution found!

    Hello,
After many, MANY hours of searching these forums and other forums, I've finally found a solution that works.
Short answer: Bluetooth Hotsync works with Vista 64
If your computer has built-in Bluetooth support and working 64-bit drivers, then you're all set. If not, continue reading....
Someone on these boards tipped me off that Bluetooth worked. My laptop does not have built-in bluetooth, so I began hunting for a suitable Bluetooth USB adapter. As of now I found an adapter that I have been able to get working, but it is a bit of a hack. Broadcom has released Vista drivers for USB adapters that use their Bluetooth chipset, and they have included 64 bit drivers, but here's the catch: The drivers are unsigned, so Vista will install them, but prevent them from loading because they are "unknown". Here's what I did:
1.) Buy a Kensington or other major brand name USB Bluetooth adapter. I bought this one, but there are others. Whatever you do, do NOT try and save a few bucks by buying a cheap-o off brand adapter, because chances are it is using an unlicensed chipset and the drivers won't load. I know, I bought one and could not get it to work. Long story...
2.) Go here and download the latest Bluetooth drivers from Broadcom. This is the release that has preliminary Vista support.
UPDATE! The Broadcom drivers no longer seem to work properly as I found when I recently had to reinstall vista 64, so I found newer drivers released by Anycom that work with the generic Kensington adapter. Go to Anycom Support here and download the version 6.0.xx drivers for the Anycom Blue USB-200/250. You MUST have the 6.0+ version of the drivers. The site defaults to German, just click the USA flag in the top right to get English.
I believe that Anycom is actually the true manufacturer of the Kensington adapter since when you look at the pictures, the two adapters are identical, only difference being the color of the plastic. The Anycom drivers may also work with other USB adapters, but I'm not sure.
3.) Install the drivers above. You will get MANY warning messages that the driver publisher is unverifiable. Just select continue anyway to install the drivers anyway. After installation it may tell you to reboot. If not, reboot anyway once the drivers have installed.
4.) Here's the tricky part. When the system post screen comes up before the system boots, hit F8 to bring up the boot options (same method you use to boot into safe mode). Then select the last option, "Disable digital driver signature enforcement". This will make Vista ignore the fact that those Broadcom drivers are unsigned and load them anyway.
Once the system comes up, proceed with setting up Bluetooth Hotsync as per the normal method. It works! I was even able to sync with Outlook 2007 after installing the Office 2007 update.
Keep in mind you will have to disable driver enforcement EVERY time you reboot. That is until Broadcom gets their drivers digitally signed, which I imagine won't be very long.
Might want to make this a sticky, at least until Palm releases proper Vista 64 support.

I find it uncomfortable and bewildering to find Palm support have been given the 64-bit operating systems since October 2006 and still have not come up with an answer to the default USB hotsync "cf". I wonder why the complacency, (or lack of approach) knowing this problem would turn up for literally tens of, if not hundreds of thousands of Dedicated and Reliable Palm users. Yes, the software has been available for developers since actually late September. I sincerely hope someone within the PalmOne Corporation will make a decision and provide the answer quickly.

  • HotSync won't update...hard reset not work

I was not getting my updates from several HotSyncs on my TX. Was receiving low memory messages, so I did several resets to no avail. I eventually did the hard reset and all of my data was removed. When I attempted to HotSync to restore the info, my laptop did not recognize the TX (device). I reloaded all the Palm Desktop software on the laptop and still no results. Where did I mess up? Thanks

What happens when you try to sync? Do you get any error messages??
If you are getting the error message, "the connection between your device and the desktop cannot be established, please check your setup and try again" here is what you need to do.
Do you see the hot sync icon (circle with red and blue arrows) on the bottom right of your computer screen? Is there an arrow with the option to "show hidden icons"? If you do not see it there, hot sync will be disabled and you will keep getting that message (the connection between your device and the desktop could not be established...). To enable the hot sync program once again, click on Start > Programs/All Programs > Palm OS Desktop/Palm One > Hot Sync Manager. It will take about 5-10 seconds and the icon will be there once again. Now the sync should go through. When you begin sync'ing, the computer will prompt you, "there is no user name associated with this account..." select your old user name and then all the info will come back onto your palm.
I hope this works for you!

  • Successful Hotsync - Palm T3 Windows 7 64-bit by Bluetooth

After a lot of frustration and some blue screens trying other methods, it worked for me...
    HP p6675uk - 2 x dual core - Windows 7 64-bit
Downloaded Palm Desktop 6.2 and installed it, but skipped the hotsync.
Installed a Buetooth dongle - I used a dirt cheap one - the Dynamode BT-USB-M2
It did not install properly, but I ran the Troubleshooter and Windows found the updated driver (CSR is the maker)
Then the dongle kept dropping out - a yellow exclamation mark on the icon in the Devices and Printers window.
Then I ran services.msc (Start - Run - type in "services.msc" - OK) to discover that the bluetooth service wasn't running! Enabled it in automatic mode.
Opened Bluetooth properties and made the dongle discoverable.
On the Palm, started Bluetooth and made a new trusted connection to the PC.
On the Palm set Hotsync to use the newly created Bluetooth conection
On the PC opened HotSync Settings → Connections to use Bluetooth only
    Start Hotsync from the Palm.
    That worked!
Tried again, got the “can't connect being used by another program" error message on the Palm.
Looked in Devices and Printers, the yellow exclamtion mark was back. Experimented and found an answer that works reliably for me.
    Now I have a routine:
After Windows start-up, when I want to run Hotsync, open Devices and Printers. Bluetooth has the exclamation mark.
    * Open the Device Manager. Open the Bluetooth device. In the Driver tab, disable the driver, click OK. Go back in, enable the driver, click OK. Look again at the Devices and Printers window:
    1. Exclamation mark gone. Switch on Palm, Palm appears in Devices screen, run Hotsync. Goto End
    2. Exclamation mark there. Remove dongle, replace dongle
2a. Exclamation mark gone, goto 1
2b. Exclamation mark returns, goto * above
End - It worked, I'm happy.

  • Windows Blue Screen Error Message Appears As Soon As IPod Connected

Everytime I connect my IPod to my computer, I get the Windows Blue Screen error message. Thought it was the cable, so plugged cable in by itself. No problem. Uninstalled IPod and ITunes software and then plugged in IPod, still got the Blue Screen. The Blue Screen says something about "recent plugged in device problem". It is not the cable, it must be the IPod. Did not have this problem when I bought it. Tried it on labtop and get the same error message. I can't do updater or anything that requires me to plug the IPod into a computer because the Blue Screen appears immediately. When I unplug, the Blue Screen remains and locks up the computer so I have to restart each time. I have tried everything I can think of. Please help.

Hi Mike thank you for replying,
I am not able to start the computer in safe mode, safe mode with networking, last good known configuration etc, Each time it quickly blue screens and restarts about two secs into the process.
I was unable to try a clean OS install from the disk as it gave the blue screen error shown in the original post. The same thing happened when I tried to use the repair option on the XP home disc. So i can't get into the computer at all to start diagnosing the fault, the only clue I have is the error message, and after searching the internet I haven't found much enlightenment from that yet.
