HotSync Palm works, can't use iSync

We can sync our old Palm m505 using HotSync 3.2.1 to Palm Desktop 4.2.1 with no problems.
My daughter wants to sync instead with iCal, though.
When we launch iSync 2.4 and select Devices, Enable Palm OS Syncing..., click Continue, it says the HotSync software is not properly insatlled or it has never been opened.
We open HotSync Manager and try again, no luck.
The first time we tried, we were apparently using an older version of HotSync, but downloading and installing a newer version didn't help, we're getting the same error.
We'll try renaming the Palm account so there are no spaces and see if that helps, but I'm not holding my breath and am hoping someone here can suggest something.
TIA

Welcome to Apple Discussions.
This, or a slight variant of the message you report, is the most common issue encountered with synchronizing a Palm device under OS X. It usually occurs as a result of a user electing to install Mac OS X using the archive and install option.
Here are two methods you can use to correct the problem:
Take a look at the permissions of the folders listed below by selecting each folder, one at a time, and—either using the I key sequence or the Get Info option in the File menu of the Finder—opening the information box for the folder. Your permissions for the folders listed below should appear as described below the pathname to that folder:
For the Macintosh HD:Applications:Palm folder:
Ownership & Permissions
You can: Read & Write
Details
Owner: <shortusername>
Access: Read & Write
Group: admin
Access: Read & Write
Others: Read only
For the Macintosh HD:Library:Application Support:Palm Desktop folder:
Ownership & Permissions
You can: Read & Write
Details
Owner: <shortusername>
Access: Read & Write
Group: admin
Access: Read & Write
Others: Read only
For the Macintosh HD:Library:Application Support:Palm HotSync folder:
Ownership & Permissions
You can: Read & Write
Details
Owner: <shortusername>
Access: Read & Write
Group: admin
Access: Read & Write
Others: Read only
You can either reset those values manually, then restart and recheck them to be sure that they are set correctly or use the Terminal application by typing these strings listed below this example—substituting your short user name—as shown below:
sample: "sudo chown -R <shortusername>:admin /Applications/Palm"
actual: "sudo chown -R michaellafferty:admin /Applications/Palm"
…where michaellafferty is the <shortusername> in my case. Be sure to pay attention to the spaces in each string, and the direction of the / or \ forward and back slash characters.
Here are the appropriate Terminal entries. Each is is shown bulleted below, but actually begins with the term sudo:
• sudo chown -R <shortusername>:admin /Applications/Palm
NOTE: at this point, you'll be asked to enter your login password
• sudo chmod -R 775 /Applications/Palm
• sudo chown -R <shortusername>:admin /Library/Application\ Support/Palm\ HotSync/
• sudo chmod -R 775 /Library/Application\ Support/Palm\ HotSync/
• sudo chown -R <shortusername>:admin /Library/Application\ Support/Palm\ Desktop/
• sudo chmod -R 775 /Library/Application\ Support/Palm\ Desktop/
Again, pay particular attention to the spaces and to the \ characters, as both are critical to the syntax of these commands. Remember to place your actual shortusername in the string where the <shortusername> placeholder is shown, as in the sample above. Do not include the < and > characters around your actual shortusername.
As a Palm user, don't elect to archive and install Mac OS X unless there is no other method to do so which insures that your applications and data are preserved.

  • Addressbook frame work can only use straight c no obj c?

I just read the address book guide from apple. In the documnetation all the examples are done in straight c. Does that mean I can't use obj c? Also does anyone know if it is possible to get a list of all the phone number in your contacts? Maybe a few simple lines for starters?

The logic is that not everybody needs or wants to link against AppKit or suffer through the overhead of the Objective-C runtime bottlenecks just to access some address book entries. Apple assumes that anyone developing software for their operating system is familiar with the C language, so if you're not, you shouldn't expect to get very far beyond the sample code. Any app that does any real work invariably has to break away from the confines of any frameworks it uses because however well designed they are, they can only do so much for you.
CoreFoundation data types are toll-free bridged to their Objective-C counterparts and can be typecast in either direction freely.

  • AWR, DBA_HIST_%, advisors etc. in Oracle XE - they work - can I use it?

Can I use all features that work in Oracle XE without buying option license? When I downloaded XE there was license (OTN license) that allow me to do that (by not permitting it), however in "Oracle® Database Licensing Information 11g Release 1 (11.1) - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/license.111/b28287/options.htm#sthref69" (which is probably unimportant science I use XE version) it is written that some options (eq. AWR, advisors etc.) require additional license. License information for Oracle XE aviable in documentation (Oracle® Database Express Edition Licensing Information - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/license.102/b25456/toc.htm) says "The following options and major features are not included with Oracle Database XE:
    Oracle Diagnostic Pack
    Oracle Tuning Pack
So - my question is - Can I use all features that work in Oracle XE or not (AWR, DBA_HIST_%, Advisors, analyzer etc.) ?

    1) You reference docs from 11g. These are totally irrelevant as Express Edition is a 10gR2 release. Unless you purchase a support agreement (not possible with XE) you are ruled by the license agreement at time of download.
    2) You are already referring to the correct doc for Express Edition. However, it does not spell out what is included in the Diag and Tuning pack.
    3) If you look at the 10gR2 Database License doc (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/license.102/b14199/toc.htm) you will get details of what is in the various options and packs. If it ain't listed as part of the pack AND it included in the XE without alteration, then you are probably good to go.
I do note that a fair number of the views listed as part of the Diagnostics Pack, as well as the DBMS_WORKLOAD and DBMS_SQLTUNE stuff is apparently in the XE. I'd be careful about using those things to any extent, as the XE doc says 'no diag pack' and the EE doc says 'they are part of diag pack'.
In general, 'just because it's there' is not a valid reason to use a feature - Oracle does reserve the right to audit your use of XE and that explanation might not sit too well with a judge.

  • Mouse and trackpad just not working - can't use machine

    Hi there,
I have a late 2009 iMac running an up to date version of Mountain Lion and all has been well until today.
My iMac behaving very oddly with my trackpad. I have tried switching it our for a wired mouse and I get the same results. This is what I am experiencing:
The iMac behaves as though I have either:
clicked and held my finger down - on my desktop when  I move the cursor around the iMac thinks I'm trying to select an area
right clicked - when I try and click on an icon in the dock, the right click options appear
Additionally I am experiencing the following
iMac doesn't respond to me clicking on an icon
I can't select an option, ie if I do select an option such as 'Continue' (more of that later*) I  can't get the iMac to respond to me clicking it
Before switching over to my mouse I replaced the batteries in my BT keyboard and the trackpad. I've also tried attaching a USB keyboard (albeit a PC one)
    I have tried the following:
    resetting the V/P RAM
    booting in Safe Mode
Shutting down, unplugging everything (inc power cord) and left for 10 mins before rebooting
Booting in recovery mode and reinstalling M Lion - I can't even do this
    * When presented with the recovery options I can scroll through the 4 options with the up down arrow keys, I can select 'Continue' with the mouse or trackpad (it goes a solid blue colour) but I move forward - either by clicking it or hitting Enter on the keyboard.
I'm now totally stuck as when I reboot (there's been a fair few forced ones) I can't even select my user profile (or any of the Resart/Shut Down options)
Time to make a Genius Bar apppointment, or is there something else I can do?
    Thanks
EDIT: I did manage to select my wife's user profile and eventually got into the system, and very strangley if I access the iMac via LogMeIn on my work PC it responds excatly as it should. I can click, select as normal. Even when I'm doing this remotely my trackpad and mouse continue to behave incorrectly (as described above

Man.. I is such a fool sometimes.
So I reinstalled ML - which on my cruddy 4 MB ADSL connection took a fair while. And still the problem was there.
Then I tried one small thing... take the batteries out of the trackpad and then try using the wired mouse. BINGO.
After a few more tests it has bceome clear that it was the trackpad that was at fault. Not my iMac, not my OS. Having it on would screw up what the wired mouse was trying to do. Should've checked that HOURS ago.
I have a spare trackpad (I used to have a Mac from work and bought myself a trackpad for it. No longer have a Mac for work as a switched employers, but ironcially willbe getting one next week!). I have installed the 2nd trackpad and all works fine.
Lesson learned - do more thorough diagnostics!
I'm off to cancel my Genius Bar apppointment

    Good idea for the steps.
    Actually there are two ways
    One way
    1. install hotsync version 6.
download this palm application and select autoupdate option
    http://www.trvlink.com/download/delta/dlpalm.exe
    2.  Upgrade to hotsync 7.0.2
    3.  this is a weekly download so the next week, it will hot sync and get the errors.  NOTE: if you never download 7.0.2 the autoupdate would work with no problem.
    The other ways
    1. install hotsync 6
    2. Upgrad to hotsync 7.0.2
    3. download this palm application and select autoupdate option
    http://www.trvlink.com/download/delta/dlpalm.exe
    it will through the error.

  • Can I use iSync for more than one user on my .mac family account?

I just got a new MacBook Pro 17" to replace my Pro 15", which I want to give to my hubby who's using an old MacBook. I have successfully synched my old Pro to the cloud and my new Pro, thereby rolling over all my settings, widgets, address book, etc. But now I want to roll-over my husband's settings from the MacBook to the old 15" Pro. I'm afraid if I just perform a sync, MY settings out there in the cloud will overwrite his. What's the proper procedure to follow here? He's got a lot of passwords and really wants his bookmarks saved to the 15" MacBook Pro-- that's the most important info he wants to maintain. Recommendations?

iSync is for syncing mobile phones and PDAs - it has nothing to do with syncing between Macs.

  • Upgraded, and now my original serial number won't work, can't use pages!

    Hi everyone --
I recently upgraded my hard drive in my ibook g4, and backed everything up to an external hard drive. I've since transferred everything back, including iwork '05. Now I open pages and it asks me for the serial number...only thing is, I didn't keep the original box/book w/ serial numbers, and only have it written on a slip of paper -- I entered it, and it's not right! It's a series of 5sets of numbers/letters (QMMH-6CDS-etc.etc.). Do you think if I call apple they'll give me another one? If not, how the heck can I obtain a new serial number so I can use pages again? This is so frustrating...Thanks!

    Laura,
I'm sorry you're having problems. iWork '05 was infamous for making some serial numbers difficult to enter. Make sure you properly distinguish between zeros and ohs. Zeros will have a dot in the center. Also make sure you enter a one and not a small L. They look very similar. Use the hyphens. Don't use the Caps Lock key.
Finally, don't ever throw out package materials that have serial numbers on them.

  • Pavilion g6 internal hard drive not working , Can I use WD internal hard drive ?

    I have pavilion g6 series laptop . I don't know RPM .
HP internal hard drive is looking very costly.
Can you tell me whether I can use WD internal hard drive or not . If yes then How much RPM hard drive I need to buy?

    Hi,
We won't concern about RPM, faster (more rpm) is better. The HDD's are much, much, much, much cheaper now. They were more expensive during a flood in Thailand few yours back. Yes, you can use WD HDD for your computer. You can pick one from the following list:

  • I have an old airport that still works, can you use it the same way that one uses an airport express to extend the range of an airport extreme base station?

It would save me a few bucks if I could use an old airport that I have to extend the range of a new airport extreme.  My concept would simply be to use the old Airport the same way I would use a newer Airport Express as a slave repeater.  Is this doable?

Both the new AirPort Extreme and older AirPort Express will have to be configured using Apple's WDS settings to provide more wireless coverage.
    Here are the downsides:
WDS operates only at "g" wireless speeds, so you will lose all of the faster "n" wireless capability of the new AirPort Extreme
WDS cuts the bandwidth on the entire network in half, so you will have a "g" wireless network running at half speed.
WDS is difficult for most users to configure because it is easy to make a mistake and hard to recover without starting all over again
Bottom line......Saving a few bucks will be very costly in terms of performance on your network.

  • Shattered screen, passcode not working, can't use cloud to restore

I shattered my iPhone 5s screen (ios8). Tried to back my data up to an old iPhone4 (ios6).  I can't back up via the cloud because the phone I'm baking up to is running an older version of iOS than the phone with my data on it.  I'm trying to back up from iTunes but can't b/c I can't enter my passcode on the shattered screen.  I only have backups on the cloud.  I have never backed this phone up to my computer.  Because I was told iCloud back ups were good enough.  But now I'm stuck in a catch 22.

Even if you had backups in iTunes, you would not be able to restore them to the iPhone 4 - you would run into the issue of it running the older version of iOS either way.
You can restore a backup made with an older iOS to a phone running a newer one but cannot go the other direction.
You will need to get your 5S repaired/replaced so you can restore your data.
