Hours old and won't re-start up

UGH!!! Just out of the box, set up was going along fine. I was playing around with imovie and nothing was ahppening. The mouse was moving but nothing was recating to it. I had to restart by holding down the power button. I unplugged the computer for a minute or so, but when it powers back on, I just get a grey apple and small spinning "thingie"! I have unplugged the printer and Ethernet. Other than those I haven't even had a chance to install anything! Any ideas? I am a former PC user and ready to plug my Windows back in...

There are 2 important things to do with a new Mac.
1. Let it have time for Spotlight to index your entire HDD. It will begin indexing as soon as you start your new Mac. It will continue until it knows where everything is installed on your new Mac. Including all the new music, photos, videos and personal files you may install and any new software. Some folks who have the minimum RAM report that until Spotlight finishes indexing your HDD that the Mac may run slower.
2. Since the Install DVDs were created for your model of new Mac, Apple may have issued updates to Mac OS X, Mac Security, the firmware and the software programs that came with your Mac. Before getting too involved with enjoying your Mac it is better to let Software Update find, download and install these updates with your internet connection. Software Update is located in the Apple menu. When Software Update finds new updates carefully read what each one is and does and see if there are any special instructions to follow to install them correctly. Most will just require a restart of your Mac. The ones to be careful about are the Firmware Updates. They usually have special instructions that must be followed exactly and very carefully. If you follow the instructions they will install fine. People have gotten in trouble by not knowing the Firmware update was being installed and not following the instructions. While Software Update (SU) is installing the updates it is a good idea to not do other things on the Mac. Let SU do its job undisturbed. It is also a good idea to install updates without any peripheral devices, like cameras , external drives, etc, connected to your Mac, just the keyboard and mouse. Run SU until it has no more updates to install.
After those two things you are ready to enjoy your Mac to its greatest potential!

  • Mac air overheating and won't re start ?

Mac book air is overheating and won't re start. Have left it for 2 hours but still warm and still dead.  Is the battery going to blow?

I have not heard of this. Are you running extensive applications on it such as video or music editing software? Did you leave it on charge for those two hours, or did you remove the MagSafe adapater?
What I would do would be to remove the MagSafe adapter, let it cool. If you can get it going again, then I would leave things, and see if it happens again. If it does, I would reinstall Lion, and if you continue to have problems after that, I would take it to an Apple store to have a Genius look at it.

  • Has anyone had their iphone 4 die on them? Mine is just 2 yrs old and won't switch on, tried all the remedies, reboot, tried to connect and reboot via itunes, new battery--nothing works

Hias anyone had their iphone 4 completely die on them? Mine won't switch on, I have tried using the power key with the home key, tried connecting it via usb cable to itunes, tried new battery- nothing has worked. The phone is just 2 yrs old this month, and I haven't dropped it or anything. I have never had a phone break on me before in almost 20 yrs of having mobile phones- I've had to resort to using a 7 yr old Nokia, which I used to love but it's not the same as my iphone!!

If you have attempted the reset, which is holding the home button and sleep/wake button, was it still connected to the computer? Have you tried to do that when not connected. You stated it never came on, how long did you hold the buttons together? If you cannot get it to connect to iTunes then you would not be able to restore the device. You can see if you can put the device into Recovery Mode by following the instructions in this support document. If that does not work, then you are correct, make an appointment at the Apple Store. If you can't update or restore your iOS device

  • I upgraded Firefox a few months back and rebooted. Now I can't get back into firefox b/c the "reboot now" window keeps on coming back and won't let start the firefox app. How do i fix this?

    I get the following error:
Your computer must be restarted to complete a previous upgrade of Firefox. Do you want to reboot now?
I will reboot but the following message keeps on popping up when I try to start Fireofox. How can I fix this?

You can undo your permission changes. Probably the most relevant one is cookies. Try one or both of these methods:
    (1) Page Info > Permissions tab
While viewing a page on the site:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Permissions
    * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Permissions
    (2) about:permissions
In a new tab, type or paste '''about:permissions''' and press Enter. Allow a few moments for the list on the left to populate, as this information needs to be extracted from a database.
Then type or paste ''rcn''' in the search box above the list to filter it to the most relevant domains. When you highlight a domain, you can adjust its permissions in the right pane.
    Any luck?

  • The "Latest Headlines" on my Bookmark Bar are a month old and won't update to current stories. What can I do to fix this. I haven't changed any settings.

Firefox 3.6.28 For MacBook Pro 10.4.11
I've haven't had a problem with the News stories updating to current stories until now. NOT very Techie.

Well, first off, you are running a very ancient version of Mac OS, you should update to at least 10.5, preferably 10.6 if your computer can support it. This shouldn't cost you all that much money. It will probably at most cost you about $40 to fully update your computer (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4517588?tstart=0). the benefits of upgrading are numerous, but mainly will provide you increased security, performance and stability. Right now your computer is not safe to use online.
After you update, update Firefox [[Update Firefox to the latest version]] and your plugins (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/)
Note, this won't work until you update Mac OS X

  • IPod nano just hours old and it's frozen!

First thing I did was plug it in to my laptop, and my iTunes recognized it and I set up iTunes with the ipod's name, etc. My iPod screen was showing the flashing "do not disconnect" for the 3 hours I had it plugged in and the battery symbol signified that it had been completely charged, with the plug symbol in the center... but I left it plugged in anyways. I synched up my ipod with the songs in itunes, and everything seemed fine until I ejected it and it went to the language select screen. The lock symbol was also showing in the upper corner, without the lock in the on position. I moved the lock back and forth with no change, and I could not select or scroll at all. I also reset several times and tried plugging it into a wall adaptor, still no change.
Would it be easier for me to just return to the store than figure out what's wrong?

yes! pls. return it back for replacement.

  • Droid Razr HD, only hours old. Won't power on.

I was listening to Pandora, enjoying my new phone, when the music just stopped, I was unable to restart the music so I tried reinstalling the app, but it would not let me install it. "Invalid package." So I turned off my phone, and now I can not get it back on. I tried the pwr key+volume down(several times.) thing but nothing. And even more alarming the phone is getting hot and it is not plugged in or powering on.

I don't mean to be rude, because I appreciate the feedback, but if you read the OP, you'll see that I already tried the power button vaolum combo. Also, to the plugging it in suggestion. I can only see that damaging the phone even further, because again, refering back to the OP, the phone was getting very very hot, when it wasn't plugged in. It's only stopped getting hot, because, presumably, the battery completely died. And again, I mean no disrespect. However, now, because my battery was dead, I decided to plug it in to the wall charger, and the green led came on and stayed on. I still could not get the phone on. Holding down the power and volume button, caused the light blink as if I had a notifications. Holding down just the power causes the light to go off for a moment and then back on. And another change, now the led is a constant slow blink.
I plan on taking it back to verizon and getting a new replacement after class tomorrow, but I would still like figure out what is going on here. I have a long night of studying ahead of me, and I would like to be able to use my phone.

  • TS4148 IPHONE 4S 5 HOURS OLD AND MICRO SIM IS NOT COMPATIBLE

    Hello There,
I purchased a brand new IPhone 4S in a store today and have run into a problem.
    I currently have a HTC One X (Beats) with a Micro-SIM card.
I opened the IPhone box and inserted the micro sim as instructed and went through as far as the wifi settings until I was greeted with the following message:
"The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be supported.  Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported carrier's store to receive a replacement SIM card".
The phone is sim free and it is a micro sim card that was purchased (from the three store and not cut) less than 4 months ago along with my HTC.
It works perfectly via that however not via the IPhone.
Could someone please point me in the right direction in order to get this resolved please?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

What country are you in, What carrier are you trying to use, and what store did you purchase the phone from?

  • MBP shuts down and won't start up

I had my MBP for 2 months and it just started to act weird. For no reason, it randomly shuts down with no warning (just like if you would disconnect the battery) and won't even start up again (I had half of the start up sound then nothing). After a couple of more tries, it should startup again but soon things will go bad... Any idea what is going on ?

Sounds like a bad battery and/or problem with the PMU (power management unit) and/or memory.
"Half the start up sound" is a bad sign as it means it's failing the normal start up tests (I'd guess a Memory problem)
Reset the PMU and run the Hardware tests from Install DVD1 (hold down d at startup) and see what it reports.

  • Downloaded iOS 8 to iPhone 4s, won't allow start up.

Have just downloaded iOS 8 to my iPhone 4s on start up the phone seems to be in a loop at the Apple ID Sign in page to set up iCloud. Whether you sign in or try to skip this step it loops back to the Hello screen and then through to the Apple ID Sign in again. It won't allow you to progress any further and won't allow start up.

I still have no WiFi nor do I have Bluetooth capabilities on my iPhone 4S. I Tried to do a system restore and it's exactly the same as before. Could Apple please expedite an update to solve this WiFi issue? Maybe go back to how you had the WiFi working in iOS7??? It's cutting into my limited data plan and I'd appreciate it if I could use the product I paid for and not feel like I'm being scammed out of it for lack of a better term.

  • How Do You Re-Start CF Admin? / Service Stopped, Won't Re-Start

CF Admin suddently stopped, and won't re-start.  Have been using CF9 on Win7/x64 for months with no problems.  Was trying to install a Teradata JDBC driver.  After copying the .jar file to the C:\ColdFusion9\lib folder, I went into Services and tried to STOP and RE-START the Cold Fusion Application Server.  While Windows was trying to stop the service, got an error that it was unable to stop the service, and it locked up.  Unable to stop or start service.
After re-booting PC, Services showed all CF services started normally, but can't run CF Admin, and can't access any data sources or run any .CFM programs.  It appears to be stuck.  I tried stopping and re-starting all ColdFusion services, which stopped and re-started fine, but still get error when trying to run CF Admin.  Appears something is hung-up.  Appreciate any advice on how to get the service re-started.  Can't run any .CFM programs as all DSNs are unavailable.  Below is error message when trying to access CF Admin:
    Error Occurred While Processing Request
The DataSource service is not available.
This exception is usually caused by service startup failure. Check your server configuration.
The error occurred in Application.cfm: line 88

    Thank you,
    Gary

Thank you for taking the time to reply.  Actually, thanks to some Google-ing, was able to find and fix the problem.  The problem began when I tried to install and verify a Teradata JDBC driver.  When I tried to stop and re-start the service, it locked up.  Then would not start again.
I discovered the SERVER.LOG file should tell you exactly what the error is, and it did.  It showed an invalid character in 4 places in the neo-datasource.xml file (in the C:\ColdFusion9\lib folder).  So my options were to either remove the invalid characters, or replace the neo-datasource.xml file with the last good working backup.
When this file goes corrupt, the .BAK version is used, and then it goes corrupt when you try to stop-restart the service, and you're left with no backup (.BAK) file. Fortunately, I had another working version of the file on another computer (configured same as this one).  So I copied it to my computer, and replaced the bad one, then re-booted (could have stopped and re-started the service, but decided to re-boot, which does the same thing).
The CF Admin started normally.  I was then able to correctly install the Teradata JDBC driver.  The cause of the problem was that I had failed to also list the tdgssconfig.jar file in the JVM section of CF Admin (even though the instructions I had said the Class 4 driver did not require this file, and that CF would ignore it).  But apparently, it is needed.
Anyway, after all this, the Teradata JDBC drivers verified successfully.  My CF test server is now connecting with the corporate data warehouse in Houston, over 1,000 miles away, using the newly installed JDBC drivers.  And queries and .CFM files are running normally.  Thank goodness.
Anyway, thanks again for the reply.  Much appreciated.  If anyone else has a problem getting CF Admin to start, after tinkering with installing new DSNs, remember to ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP of your neo-datasource.xml file before you begin.  Better safe than sorry.  Regards,
    Gary

  • I just tried to wake up my 4 year-old MacBook Pro after perhaps an hour of inactivity, and it just 'pinwheels' and won't restart. HELP!!!!!!!!!

I just tried to wake up my 4 year-old MacBook Pro after perhaps an hour of inactivity, and it just 'pinwheels' and won't restart. HELP!!!!!!!!!
Semi-experienced user - Western New York.
System was operating nominally until I opened it from 'sleep' mode after ~1 hour of inactivity.
No idea what's going on. I had just installed a Flash Player update [not an atypical occurrence] at ~6:00 PM this evening, but used the system without incident after that. Re-Start attempt does not appear to succeed, the circular pre-OS icon never clears and displays the authorization screen.
Anyone with an idea how to help would be greatly appreciated. We have so much personal and business data on this machine!!!
    Thanks!
    Jim F.

Press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly to restart.
The fact that you're worried about the data implies that you have no backups, or that you don't have confidence in your backups. Your first priority must be to back up all the data you intend to keep. Ask if you need guidance.
