? hours to zero all data via usb 1.0 vs 2.0, 160GB

In terms of approximate hours, does anyone know how long it might take to zero all data on an external hard drive, comparing usb 1.0 vs usb 2.0?
I have to get a time estimate (hours) to make a decision on which one of my computers I dedicate to that task, preferring not to tie up other usage of my 2.0 capable computer unless it's just a couple hours.
I think zero all data on a 160GB hard drive might take many hours, but don't have a clue how many.

Look at USB: Transfer Speed Compared to Other Technologies
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24531
The USB speeds listed are maximum. Based on the maximum speeds, USB 2 is 40 times faster thab USB 1.1. The sustained average speed on both is less that half the maximum.

  • Security concern/ application concerns and procedures for zeroing all data

    Hi,
I've looked through the posts and can't find the answers to my questions so here goes:
I've had a MacBook Pro for about a year, and I may have to return it to my employer. In an effort to prepare the machine and make sure my information can't be accessed once it is returned I have read that the proper thing to do is zero all data (I have read the MAC how-to page on the process).
I was told that zeroing all data will remove my files and access to trashed items after I give it back to my employer, but I have a few concerns:
    1. I have an external hard drive with more than enough room to transfer my files, but what exactly does everyone mean by "all my files"? Just my personal files in the various applications like iPhoto, iTunes, and even My Documents, or are there others as well?
    2. Although I have the DVD/CD that came with the machine, there were additional software applications installed by the administrator at my place of work (Office - Power Point etc). Do these things get removed when I zero data or will they still be there?
    3. Lastly, is it true that you should zero up to three times to make sure your data is inaccessible? I know it will take about 24 hours to do approx. 20 gb's....
    Thanks so much in advance,
    Goldilox

Well what do you mean by all your files? Usually all your things will be in your home folder, so as long as you have enough space to contain that, you'd be okay.
Although I have the DVD/CD that came with the machine, there were additional software applications installed by the administrator at my place of work (Office - Power Point etc). Do these things get removed when I zero data or will they still be there?
Zeroing data happens at the drive device level, so everything on that volume will be gone. It's akin to formatting.
Lastly, is it true that you should zero up to three times to make sure your data is inaccessible? I know it will take about 24 hours to do approx. 20 gb's....
It depends who you're worried the attacker is. For most people, zeroing a few times will be enough to prevent them ever retrieving the data. Very expensive specialised data recovery equipment can still recover data from a zeroed drive, though... so if you're afraid of the police, or the FBI, or the NSA, then you're better off physically shredding the hard drive.

  • How do I zero all data on Time Capsule?

I just got the new 2TB Time Capsule and I want to get rid of my previous 1TB one, but I can't figure out how to zero all data on that disk, and I of course don't want to sell my Time Capsule to a stranger with sensitive data on it. Does anyone know how to wipe out all the data on a Time Capsule?

Launch Airport Utility, double-click on your old Time Capsule in the left column, then click on "Disks" in the toolbar, click on the Time Capsule Disk on the left, then click on the "Erase..." button.

  • How to read out data via usb

    Hello,
i am trying to get the measurements of a dial indicator, "MarCator 1075", product of Mahr Co. via USB-Cable.
I installed all the drivers and MAX shows that its a COM-Device and its working properly. So i configured the settings: baud rate 4800, data bits 7, parity even, stop bits 2, apllied and saved the changes.
I tried those 2 attached VI's, but it doesnt work.
    1. basic_serial_write_and_read.vi is the standard VI for USB-communication of NI.
    2. Sylvac Read.vi is a VI the vendor send after i talked to him to inform me about the dial indicator. He said its a VI to get Data via RS232, but the problem is that i dont have a RS232-slot in my computer. In order to that i have to realize it via USB.
I think it doesnt work because there are no databits to be read out. When the dataflow arrives the "VISA-Read" theres is an error. This occures in both VI's.
Error -1073807339 occurred at VISA basic_serial_write_and_read.vi
Possible reason(s): VISA:  (Hex 0xBFFF0015) Timeout expired before operation completed.
Anyone who can help me with my issue??
    thx in advance

    Hello FCHansa,
have you installed the proper drivers?
Which version of LabVIEW are you using?
Which OS are you working on?
In the LabVIEW Example Finder you have a simple example how you can communicate to a USB HW via NI-VISA.
It's called "Basic TCPIP or USB VISA Write and Read - PDA.lvproj". Or another would be "Basic TCPIP or USB VISA Write and Read - Touch Panel.lvproj"
Have you configured your USB Device to a virtual COM interface?

  • Native Extension to read\send data via USB.

Hi all. Is there any way to obtain or send data to USB-devices connected directly to my android-based phone? Application must recieve data coming from usb-device, and send response if requested.
Saw solutions to make that on desktop apps (adruino ANE), but there is nothing for mobile (to android, for example).
Any ideas? There is solution for Java (on android community) to get devices and so on, but i'm not interested in Java.

    Any one has a solution?
How can i connect my app via USB or bluetooth with iOS or Android?

  • Cannot re Activate iPhone5 ios7 after erasing all date via Find My iPhone

I have an iphone 5 with ios7.04 which was working perfectly until I recently tried to swap a SIM card from one service provider to another (which I have done many times). After inserting the SIM, the searching msg (top left corner) remained on all the time even after the sim is removed (does not show no SIM msg). Also the carrier icon in the settings menu disappeared.
I tried several things to see it would return to normal like, rebooting, erasing settings etc. I could not restore normally because a message (turn off find iphone in icloud settings) appeared each time I tried however I could not turn off find my iphone even with my i.d. & password. I then tried a hard reboot by putting it in recovery mode and restoring the iphone via itunes to still no avail.
Finally I tried to erase the iphone via icloud in an attempt to re activate it however now my phone is back to the activation process but it will not re activate via itunes or icloud.
Has anyone had this issue before after trying everything to bring it back to life. my phone is just over 12months old from new, has not been tampered with and (just out of warranty (typical). It has never given any problem like this before apart from the usual freezing etc sometimes.
    Can anyone help!!
    Thanks

Solved! The problem was in the SIM card PIN. The activation mode was trying to register the device but the SIM card was locked. The only thing that helped was placing the SIM card into an another device and changing the SIM card PIN setting to off.

  • Migrating Data via USB to External Drive?

A couple years ago, I upgrade my iBook G4 hard drive to a 100GB 7200 Seagate. I did this by taking it to CompUSA and paying them $29 for the service.
Now I want to pull that drive out and replace it with the original 30GB drive - I'll probably take it back to CompUSA to have this swap done.
My question is this - I have an External USB Enclosure (the 30GB is currently hanging out in there) ... can I clone the iBook's Data onto this drive, so that when CompUSA gets it - they can just do a hardware swap and not have to deal with the software?
    Thanks!

Use an application such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • E71 - too low speed of copy data via USB cable. 50...

I tried to transfer data on diffrent computers with full supported USB 2.0 ports and with nokia PC suite 7.0 installed on them and had such bad writing/reading speed (500-700 kb/sek)
Also I tried to connect E71 as a mass storage device on computer without any PC Suite installed but had the same result. It looks like i have only USB 1.0 supported port on my E71... and may be lower

It has USB 2.0, but a think it needs nokia pc suite driver to work at high speed.

  • IPod Charges on a Docking Station but not via USB

Bit of an odd one this, I have been living with it for a good many years, however now as I have discovrered the usefullness of this forum I will ask for some advice on the cause of this.
Simply my iPod will not charge when connected to usb, eg charger, from the computer. When connected to a docking station that runs off mains power it will charge. It holds the charge well.
The problm first started when I plugged it into a faulty USB port. The keyway was broken so I managed to insert the connector the wrong way round. This messed up the iPod and I wasn't able to get it working again untill I got it home and connected it up to my computer. From this point onwards it has not charged via usb.
Naturaly I would have thought the Battery, or possibly some charging unit to be at fault in this, however as it depends on how I go about charging it, I am unsure as to what it would be.
    Any thoughts?

The 5th generation iPod had two sets of power input pins on the dock connector. One set is for USB power (+5V) while the other set is for Firewire connections (+12V and up), a hold over from when all iPods could charge and sync via a Firewire connection. The 5th generation could only sync via USB but Apple left the charging ability from Firewire connections to allow the iPod to be backwards compatible with all the various chargers and docks already "in the field". Back then, almost all docks used the Firewire pins for inputting charging voltage (usually +12V) so they would be backward compatible with all previous iPods.
Sooooo, what has probably happened is when you plugged in the USB cord backward with your iPod, you damaged the input circuitry of the iPod for the USB voltage pins (perhaps a diode or resistor burned up) and now you can no longer have input on those pins. However your Firewire connection is still fine. So when you plug into your old dock which still supports Firewire charging you can charge your iPod. Note that almost all newer docks no longer have the Firewire pin connections and will all charge via USB only. So your iPod will not charge on new docks.
I hope that answers your question,
    Patrick

  • Help Zeroing Out Data On eMac

I'm trying to wipe out the hard drive on my folks' old eMac.  I'm going to recycle the computer but it is important that I at least zero out the data and not just erase it superficially. The disk that came with the mac is 10.1.4, so I gues it doesn't have a Zero data option when I try to start fromt the disk.  Sadly my old firewire cable is MIA and I'd rather not have to buy another one just for this.
Is there another way to zero the data?
    More info:
I can start up from the install disk that came with the machine (holding the C button while powering up) which gets you to an install page.  I've selected Disk Utility  from the menu bar and from there I can get to the "Erase" tab.  At this point  with later systems I guess you would select an HD and there will be an "Options" button that lets you choose "Zero All Data", etc.  But I can't find such an option on the older disk.
The eMac was running 10.3 something after updates. However, at this point I have superficially erased the data, as I was hoping that clicking on "erase" would give me further options.  It didn't.  So i's not 10.3 anymore, and I have not yet entered any info for a new user on the computer.
I also have the 4 recovery disks that came with the eMac, if those matter.
    Help appreciated,
    Max

Well I bought the bullet and ordered a new 6 pin 9 pin firewire.  Which, with the internet, is actually not much of a bullet these days.  I don't imagine I'll use the cable for that many other things, but that's okay.  I had heard about the gibberish-file-copy method, but I think this'll be easier. Thanks tho.

  • How do I zero out data on OSX 3.9?

I went into disk utility and I could not zero out data by choosing erase. I'm reselling my old computer and want to be as secure as I can be. I rebooted the computer using the start-up disk, but I have read that this is not a very secure way to protect yourself. Please help.

Boot from the install CD. Launch DiskUtility and select the internal HD. Click on the erase tab. There should be an options button - click on that. You can zero all data - this will take a while, but be pretty secure. There is also, I believe an option to rewrite several times to eliminate the chance of someone finding "shadows" of old data that may remain after the drive has been zeroed out.
Zeroing all the data should be sufficient unless you're selling it to the precocious offspring of an NSA staffer.

  • Erase all data from my 2001 iMac?

I just turned on my old 2001 iMac (the cute blue color), and discovered to my surprise that it started and is running without a problem (I haven't even looked at it since i bought my powerbook 3 years ago). I'd like to sell the iMac.
How do I clear it of all the personal data I have on it, so i can sell it without worry? And, what do you think i could get for it?
    thanks.

Use Disk Utility to Erase the hard drive. Boot to the Tiger DVD or CD-ROM. Select your langauge. Select Disk Utility from the Installer menu. Choose the Zero All Data option in the Security screen. I'm not sure how much money exactly such a iMac would sell for. iMac DVs with Matshita SR-8184 DVD-ROM drives are worth the most. This is because the slot loading DVD-ROM drive can be flashed to RPC1. This means the drive is region free & can play DVDs from any region of the world. The firmware upgrade can be found at www.thefirmwarepage.com.

  • My first generation iPad no longer recognized in iTunes, neither via usb nor wi-fi. Did all the steps  recommended in Apple iPad support. Now what?

My first generation iPad is no longer recognized in iTunes. It just doesn't show up neither via USB nor via wi-fi.
I've checked the usb connection and cable and its OK.
I checked that iTunes is up to date on my Mac.
I reinstalled iTunes on my Mac.
    I restarted my Mac,
    I've restarted my iPad.
The iPad has IOS 4.3.1 (8G4) installed. And without the iPad being recognized in iTunes  I can not update the IOS nor apps, nor remove unneeded photos. The iPad is completely filled up, no memory left to allow even updates via cellular or via wi-fi.
Trying to gain access to update the IOS and to update APPS and to remove the pics I already have backed up and do not need on this iPad locally.
PS: I even tried to connect the iPad to a different Mac and it was not seen in that iTunes either.
So, what can I do now?
Any suggestions besides using it as a paper weight?
    Thanks

    Hello there, Blueye3355.
The following iPad Troubleshooting Assistant has some good steps to run through, to make sure you've covered all your bases:
Apple - Support - iPad - iTunes Assistant
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/itunes/
If following all the steps listed there are additional options on the last step you might want to try or review the "if the issue persists" steps mentioned in the second part of:

  • E72 - Calendar not syncing via USB data cable (Out...

    PROBLEM:
Syncing the E72-2 Calendar to Outlook over USB Data cable returned synchronization errors.
    HISTORY:
Previously was using MfE and Google Calendar as a go-between from Outlook 2003 to my E72. It worked OK for a couple of weeks, but then turned to **** (appointments disappearing from phone, duplicates that couldn't be deleted, sending tons of 'decline' messages to work colleagues from my personal Gmail account...etc. etc.)  It is abundantly clear that MfE and Google Calendar were not meant to play together at this point in time.
Next strategy was to use PC Suite to sync with the Outlook calendar directly via cable.  This was not successful either.  The default Sync profile on the phone only offers Data Bearer of Bluetooth or GPRS, no cable.  Sure enough, PC Suite would fail immediately with 0 events synced, saying to check the Idle status of the phone.
    SOLUTION that worked for me:
    Overview:
    - Delete all calendar entries on the phone, even those that are 'stuck'. (Note: you DON'T need to wipe your phone for this - that is Nokia's lazy solution but there are easier ways.)
    - Run PC Suite Cleaner from Nokia
    - Reinstall PC Suite
    - Run PC Suite, connect the phone via USB only when prompted
    - Configure the Sync profile on the phone
    - Configure the Sync application on the PC
    - Sync!
    Details:
0a. Clean off all calendar entries from the phone. To get rid of stubborn ones, you can try to sync the phone via bluetooth or internet to an empty Google or other calendar to remove all entries. (I did this by syncing to an empty iCal calendar on my Mac)  Alternatively, you can also connect the phone to PC Suite, then open the phone calendar in PC Suite and delete all appointments using the trash can button.  (Recurring series will only need to be deleted once.)
0b. Exit PC Suite.  Ensure it is not still running in the Taskbar.
    1. Run the Nokia PC Suite Cleaner, downloadable from Nokia's support site. Restart when prompted.
    2. Re-install PC Suite version 7.1.40.6
    3. Run PC Suite before connecting the phone.
3a. Select Cable connection, then connect the phone when prompted.
3b. PC Suite should install the necessary drivers and software (if this is working, you will see several USB device popups in your taskbar.)
    4. On the phone, go to Ctrl Panel --> Phone --> Sync.
4a. If you have been messing around with MfE or other sync methods, delete those extraneous sync profiles from the phone. Go to "Change Active Profile" - if you see anything besides 'PC Suite', select it and then choose 'Delete' from the Options menu.
4b. After any extra Sync profiles are gone, the phone will default back to 'PC Suite.' Ensure the PIM data you wish to sync (Calendar, etc.) is selected with a red X.
4c. It does not seem to matter what you select for Data Bearer - I am using Bluetooth and that's working even though the target PC does not have it.
4d. 'Allow sync requests' should be set to 'Automatically accept'
4e. For 'Synchronization type' select the value that works for you. ('To phone only')
    5. Run the Sync application in PC Suite.
5b. Ensure the phone has not automatically locked itself.
5c. Click the 'Sync' button in the PC Sync app.
5d. You should see Connecting....Waiting....Reading.....etc.  while the content is syncing.
5e. If it stops after Waiting and returns a communication error, you may need to try the above steps again, and/or do a clean install on your phone. :-(
Hope this helps someone out there.   Note that this is mostly from memory, so if I inadvertently skipped any steps or if anything needs further clarification, please respond to this thread to help future readers.

Herve55 I can confirm that the DC-6 (remember to buy the the one with USB-micro connection) works.
However the only reason for me wanting to use the supplied USB to USB-micro cable in the car (with 3rd party cigarette adapter) was to first, get rid of that annoying spiral cord and second to have the data cable with me at all times.
Sad to say that I´eve by now definitely tried all possible solutions for the data cable "CA-101" without any luck.
My N97 witch I was very satisfied with at start started to burn battery, reboot, loose memory, become sluggish and then after 8 months of aggravation i sent it on a flyer in the wall.
I have now after 15 years changed brand.
Conclusively the guys at Nokia seems to carry to many models for any possibility of making further great phones! in other words they´v gone sloppy.
