House DVDs won't work!

Shot in the dark but I figured I'd try... I am currently using a 2004 iBook G4, still running Panther. I recieved House MD on DVD this Christmas, but the discs don't fit in my drive. It's like something blocks them from going in, after a certain point, it needs to be pushed, but I'm afraid to force it in. I believe it's because the discs are dual sided or something like that. Any solutions for this problem? I got a new video iPod this Christmas as well, and I wanted to put some episodes on it, but if the discs don't work in my computer, then I'm kind of out of luck.

Mary, I recently answered a similar question for another user here:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3839580#3839580
Hopefully the information will help you too.
Make sure you insert the disc level horizontally. If you tilt the side of the disc closest to you up, it will catch on the drive mechanism in the lower part of the drive.
Some DVDs truly are too thick. If you think that is the case then I wouldn't advise inserting it. But if it fits the cases in my link, you may succeed.

  • Installed 10.4.8 (PPC) - now my Apple DVD won't work

After installing the 10.4.8 update on my G4 laptop my Apple DVD Player app won't work, saying "A valid DVD drive could not be found [-70012]?
What happend and how do I fix it?

Repair permissions and restart. Check System Preferences->CDs & DVDs, check the settings, and try again. Move the com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist file from ~/Library/Preferences/ to the desktop and try again. Run the System Profiler app and see what it says for the device.
Is the DVD drive internal or external? What kind of Mac? Other options are to create anothe admin user account, log into it, and see if it'll work.
BTW, it's not the update. Mine works fine and has for the past six years through 10.1 through 10.4.8.

  • Dvd won't work

DVD player won't work with Mavericks...plays fine on home dvd player and on 3 other Macs...but my main iMac, now loaded with Mavericks, won't play dvd video.   Automatically ejects disc.   I did permission repair, reset SMC, and still won't work.  Anyone having these problems...come up with a fix yet

    Hello Ralph,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with the optical drive on your iMac.  I recommend the steps below when discs are automatically ejected:
The drive accepts discs but they do not mount or are automatically ejected
Make sure the drive is not upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up.
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
The MacBook Air SuperDrive is designed to be used with MacBook Air and Mac mini computers that do not have a built-in optical drive. For best results, connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X 10.7 Lion or later: Open System Information by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click System Report.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store for additional troubleshooting, evaluation, or service.

  • MSI Drivers and Utilities DVD won't work

Hello, I've just purchased the parts to construct an entirely new computer, and I've chosen MSI Z77A-G41 motherboard.  I put everything together, and I loaded Win XP on, and my plan is to upgrade to Win 8 during their special offer.  I needed to go into Setup and change the SATA mode from AHCI to IDE, so that I could install XP. Once I had XP up and running, I inserted the MSI Drivers and Utilities DVD to load all of the drivers.  However, when I put the disc in, it auto-runs, the driver/utility screen is shown 'blacked out' and I immediately receive a Windows error message: "DVD Setup Application" error.  I went in through Windows Explorer to the programs on the DVD, and found DVD setup. By trying to run this from within Explorer, it takes me to the same error as when I auto-run.
The only thing I can think of is that I need to change something else in Setup, to run Win XP because it's so old?  I'm pretty sure that there's nothing wrong with the new DVD burner, because I've used it to install XP, and also to extract and install Service Pack 2 and 3 (which I downloaded on another computer and transferred on a CD).  If I knew exactly what needed to be installed from the MSI DVD, I could try doing it from within Windows Explorer.  But, I'd still like to figure out what the Setup Application error message is telling me.
Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated.
    Thanks!

A further note before I head off to bed.  I was able to install Win XP service packs 2 and 3 using my new burner, and I've activated with Microsoft and downloaded and installed 117 updates. I have now used this same DVD burner that won't recognize or work with the MSI driver/utilities DVD, to install all of the drivers for my video card---that DVD auto-ran just fine.  So, after doing some searches on Google about the "DVD Setup Application" error, not a lot of help but most people say that if another DVD will spin up and load things OK---it must be the fault of the DVD that won't load.  In other words, I don't think that there's a problem with anything in the Setup on the motherboard.
So, if anyone has any further ideas, please let me know.  Otherwise, I'm going to contact MSI tomorrow and see about a replacement DVD. Thanks.

  • OS 10.5.6 install DVD won't work on my G4  running 10.4.11 - HELP!!

I recently purchased a retail copy of OS 10.5.6 and attempted to install it on my G4. The installer runs fine from the DVD but freezes when it gets to the initial "choose language" screen. Mouse and keyboard are completely unresponsive with mouse pointer stuck in upper left of display.
Note: OS 10.4 DVD boots fine, as well as my original AHT disc. Disk Utility & AHT have been run and both come up clean. Also zapped PRAM, etc.
I've tried everything I could come up with such as switching KB & Mouse to other USB ports, removing add-on cards, etc. with no luck whatsoever. Does any one have any tips, thoughts or workarounds? I'm fairly knowlegdeable but may be totally missing something. Otherwise, I just wasted 129 smackers...
    Setup:
    G4 QuickSilver - 2 x 1 GHZ (2002)
    1.5 GB ram
    Radeon 9600 PRO Mac/PC edition
    <No PCI cards installed>
    Apple 24-inch LCD display
    Apple USB Mighty Mouse
    Apple USB Pro Keyboard

For more (not good) news on this video card & Mac model combination, see http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/9600mac_pcedition.html.
I suspect that any video card that shipped as an OEM product with any Mac model that meets the Leopard system requirements (& is supported by the Quicksilver) will work. This is because the Leopard DVD will have the necessary video driver extensions for those cards, but not necessarily ones that support other cards. Searching through my /System/Library/Extensions folder indicates that the following types of OEM ATI Radeon cards should be supported, but there are no guarantees:
    ATI Radeon 8500
    ATI Radeon 9700
    ATI Radeon X1000
    ATI Radeon X2000
There are also a number of driver names associated with various nVidia GeForce cards, the other supplier of OEM video cards for Apple.
The "Catch 22" about this is that if there was a Leopard compatible driver extension for the 9600 available (which there does not seem to be), you could install one of the above cards, do the upgrade to Leopard, & add it to /System/Library/Extensions folder of your startup drive afterwards. Then, the Mac could boot from that startup disk with just that card installed ... but the Leopard DVD disk still wouldn't work for repairs that require booting from it.

  • Dvd studio pro: DVDs won't work on DVD player and windows computer

    Hi
I have burnt some dvds on DVD Studio Pro I checked they were set to SD and PAL and have played them on my MAC and DVD player no problem but now I am hearing back from my client that they tried playing them on their windows computer and laptop and their DVD player and it isn't working what could be the reason for this?
    From Mike

You can see if they have another software player available.  Usually VLC is a good option.  Windows player can be a bit all over the place depending on patches of the OS and other items.   I have encountered some strange things, including people claiming that DVDs I have authored were doing things that had nothing to do with the DVD (beyond the scope of what a DVD can do, etc.)
When you say DVD Player, does this mean they are also trying to play it in a DVD Player (real player and not in computer?)  How did you burn the DVD?  Straight from DVD SP?  Check first play settings and other items?
These are some of the first things I would be starting with, particularly if real DVD players (not in computers) are concerned.  It also can be something as small as dirt or scratches on the DVD itself.  Some machines can be better at compensating than others are.

  • Any Ideas Why This DVD Won't Work?????????

I have posted this puzzler in several other forums.
I have found a DVD-R that I made in my eMac last year and I can’t get it to work.
I can’t remember how I made it or with what application! I cannot even remember what is on it (whether it was slides or video).
In a normal DVD player all that appears is a large close-up of a face.
Whether it is a still photo or a video frame I cannot tell.
I have pressed all the controls I can think of but I can't get the face to move or change etc.
HOWEVER, when I put the DVD in my eMac and double-click it I get the usual window with two files. One is “Video RM” and the other is “Video TS” but both of them are EMPTY and there is nothing else to be found.
Now here is the really strange part. When I open “Get Info” I get the following details:-
    Kind: Volume
    Format: Mac OS Extended
    Capacity: 3.71GB
    Available: Zero KB
Used: 3.71GB on disk (3,978,659,840 bytes)
So obviously there is something on it in spite of the apparently empty RM and TS folders!
Can anyone suggest how I can play it ?
    Ian.

Thanks Patrick - I had already tried it and nothing had happened.
I had actually written as much to you when I decided to give it another try before posting my reply.
Guess what? This time it worked!!!!
I don't know what I did differently or why the TS folder appears empty.
Thank you for spurring me on to try again.
    Ian.

  • Rosetta Download - install from DVD won't work due to software updates!

I need Rosetta for an ATO Australian Tax Digital Certificate... Using the SL install disk says" installation may not work check the latest combo download" The only apple combos I can see are for 10.4 / 10.5
I need Rosetta urgently - how do I install it? No when I run the CSI (ATO) program it does NOT ask me to install Rosetta - it just doesn't run. Rosetta is not installed.
    Please help!

    bonzabuy wrote:

I tried reinstalling Rosetta from the Snow Leopard DVD on a Mac updated to 10.6.1. I did not get a message saying "installation may not work." Instead I got a notification that "the installation was completed successfully," with the following advisory:
"You may have installed Mac OS X software that is older than your current version of Mac OS X, and may not work properly. To ensure the best experience please download and install the latest version of the Mac OS X Combo update from http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/. You should do this even if you currently have the latest Mac OS X update installed."
I assume that the advisory was triggered by the OS version being greater than 10.6 to "future proof" this DVD, & eventually there will be some Snow Leopard Combo updates.
Anyway, the important part is that currently, there appears to be only one version of Rosetta for Snow Leopard available, & it is installed successfully by this procedure (if it wasn't already installed, which it probably already was).
I think that your problem with the CSI (ATO) program may be elsewhere, since from what I can tell it is a Java application meant to run inside a browser. See http://www.ato.gov.au/help/bp/printcontent.asp?doc=/content/help/bp/32902.htm for more about this.

  • Burned DVD won't work after DVD player 4.6.1

I made a DVD of my daughter's wedding two days ago and it played fine on my iMac G5. Yesterday I updated the DVD player with the DVD 4.6.1 update and now I can't get my DVD to show up on the desktop or play in the DVD player. Any thoughts?
    ds

I also trashed the iDVD plist to see if that will speed up my DVD burning.
Ain't gonna' happen. You should create a disk image and then burn DVDs.
    File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Disk Utility to burn the DVD.
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (not the .img, the one below) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. Your SuperDrive tray will open. Insert a recordable DVD. (DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and Tiger.
b Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD 5 project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • Encore burned DVD won't work in DVD Player

I just created, built and burned a DVD in the latest version of Encore on my i7 MacBook Pro. After the disc is burned, it works perfectly in both a PC and a mac computer. Unfortunately it doesn't work in my Vizio DVD/Blue-Ray Player. I have double checked to make sure normal DVDs play normally, which they do.
The contents of the DVD take up about 4.65 GBs of space and include a few PDFs as DVD-ROM.
I literally followed every instruction to the letter and am just not sure why it's not working in the DVD Player. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

The DVD burner is the stock burner on the 2012 MacBook Pro 13inch (not retna display) I think it's a: Matshita DVD-R UJ-8A8(Firmware HB14)
    The DVD was just a Maxwell DVD-R, 4.7GB, 16x.
I will try burning without the DVD-ROM contents and let you know.
Thanks again for helping me with this.

  • DVD won't work on certain Players

The DVD I just burned from DVD Studio won't seem to play in certain DVD players, specifically a Hyundai crappy little DVD player. Is there a setting I need to mess with in DVD Studio in order to allow to play in all players?
(Normal, commercial DVDs play in this player without a problem.)
I have already checked the Regions-all except Reserved are checked.
Also, I can't seem to get it to play on a Windows laptop, just my iMac, in which it reads automatically like a DVD.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
    -drGreene

There is no such thing as 100% playback compatibility among burned discs. However, you can get close by using good quality media (stay away from poor quality brands like Memorex) and by keeping the bit rate reasonable. That includes encoding the audio as AC3 instead of AIFF.
Also consider that the crappy DVD player may need cleaning or servicing.

  • Back up to DVD won't work

Can anyone help, I'm trying to back up my itunes to DVDs (it says it needs about 3 DVDs) so that I can take it from my PC and put it on my mac.
First time I tried I had a problem where it burnt the first DVD and then wouldn't do the rest and just ejected the DVDs.
I've tried again today and it doesn't even seem to be doing the first one (I definitely unticked the box about only backing up new info since last backup so it should be doing it all). Basically once its done all the stuff preparing for the back up it says insert blank Disc and then it says 'burning disc...initialising' but then within 1 minute it pops the disc out again and says insert blank disc. And there's definitely nothing burnt onto the one that comse out. Can anyone help??

I have the exact same problem, get to my 3rd DVD or so and it says "insert blank disc", the disk is definitely blank! found on the internet a solution is to reinstall version 7.2 but haven't done this, seems like quite a glitch and is very frustrating.

  • Blinking Buttons DVD won't work in DVD player

I have been trying to burn a DVD multiple times. I have made hundreds of DVD's with DVD studio pro, and have never seen this problem before. When The DVD is done, when I put it in a DVD player, the button on the menu is blinking like crazy and it is impossible to select or activate it. I've tried remaking the project file and every dvd I make has this same issue. What is going on? Please help.

I saw this on my first DVDSP project many years ago, and it is indeed a combination of the duration, loop point, and timeout/end jump. I believe it was a duration of 0 on a motion menu, with the menu set to loop. Just double-check the menu properties in the inspector.
