Housekeeping Needed due to synch with 10.2.8?

I recently purchased a new Mac Pro Quad. Formerly I had been running a G4 with 10.2.8. When I started the Mac Pro for the first time I saw a message asking if I was updating from an earlier Mac OS X, which I was. The OS then gave directions on setting up a firewire link and having 10.5 bring over user accounts and other software that had been on my former machine. For the most part this worked well but there are a number of glitches. (It would have been most helpful if Apple had provided some kind of "read me" file to explain the process and what to expect as well as potential problems)
As it was I ended up with a new machine that runs well and has all my old applications up and running but it also brought over items that appear to need to be trashed. I am looking for some advice on how much house keeping to do.
The biggest item is a number of folders with the suffix (from Old Mac) on them.Some of these are in the Library folder outside of the System, some in the Library folder inside the System Folder, and one (etc) is an alias just shoing in the file listing containing many parts and pieces of what appears to be system 9. I have looked into these folders and see some creation dates going back as far a 2002. My G4 did support classic and was running both 10.2 and system 9.
Should I be trashing these folders or would a better solution be to perform a clean install? Would a clean install do anything to my user accounts? My machine is being used by 2 persons actively but has also accounts for four other persons. I wouldn't want to do anything that would damage or destroy these user's information.

Any of the OS X related items such as aliases to etc, var, tmp should be invisible. They are not most likely because of the use of the Upgrade option to Leopard. If you're willing you can do the following:
Start by downloading Pacifist at VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Open Pacifist.
Insert your Leopard DVD into the optical drive. Select Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and enter:
/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/
Click on the Go button. Locate the OSInstall.pkg file and drag it to the Pacifist window. Click on the Resources tab in the Pacifist list window. Open the Scripts folder and locate the hidden_MacOS9 file and click on the Extract to icon in the Pacifist toolbar. I would extract it the the /usr/sbin/ directory. Now Open the Tools folder and locate the SetHidden command. Select it and click on the Extract to icon in the Pacifist toolbar. Extract it also to the /usr/sbin/ directory.
Now you can quit Pacifist. Open the Terminal app in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter:
cd /usr/sbin
sudo ./SetHidden / hidden_MacOS9
Enter your password which will not be echoed.
This should return the visible items to invisibility.
As for any OS 9 folders still present they can be deleted. Drag them to the Trash and them Empty the Trash. If OS X complains that it cannot Empty because some items are in use then restart the computer. After the restart you will be able to Empty the Trash.
After all the cleanup I suggest doing this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

    Here are just a few suggestions others and by no means is exhaustive, I am sure others will weigh in.
    -Just a cursory read of the support forum I have not seen overwhelming complaints that iPhone does not work with windows. It seems mac and windows work equally well with the iPhone
    -Ringtones if you like ringtones and could see your self loading your iPhone up go with the mac. Garage Band gives you the ability to make ring tones from your own music collection for free. There are down loads like iToner etc that are unofficial ring tone makers so it makes it a little more difficult to you use.
    -As long as memory of your devices exceeds 16 GB (which is as high as the iPhone goes) you will be able to take full advantage of your iPhone. Anything more will not make a difference.
    -There is no heavy processing involved with your iPhone syncing to your desktop/laptop. What we are taking about is down loading contact lists music etc. No real graphics rendering is taking place. The iPhone is a seperate system you desktop/laptop to manage your iPhone for preferences downloads etc. So processing speeds do not matter that much.
    -iPhone apps work with any iPhone regardless of what OS it is synced to. Even if you would like to use Mobile Me it can utilize some windows programs.
    What I would do is figure out which or your personal computers you use most. Then I would set up a Mobile Me account then I would add all other computers you might use to sync with your Mobile Me account and this would solve all of your problems, for 99 bucks/year that is.

    I design logos and i need typekits logos synched with illustrator on my macbook pro. I have CC and all the apps work fine i just cant sync the fonts with my illustrator app. Tutorial on how to install typekits has an image directing me to the desktop at the top of my mac and opening the cloud image with the drop down to install fonts and to view my apps. I have creativecloud the app and i can open it from my dock but no such luck with the font interface at the top. I have no such cloud logo on my mac at the top. thanks let me know. Do i have to purchase adobe typekits to be able to use it on my laptop? And if so what a bummer

    Quit the Creative Cloud desktop app and then try again.
    Also, would it be possible to post a screenshot of the fonts panel in your Creative Cloud app? Also if you can post the link of the document that you're refering to, it'll help us troubleshoot.

When I check for updates on the Mac book pro it says software versions are up to date.
    When I check for iTunes version  10.6.3 it looks like it is for snow leopard operating system which I am not on. How to I get my devices to sync with computer. Everything worked prior to iOS 6 upgrade on remote devices.

    Macbook Pro running Mac OS 10.5.8
    iTunes 10.6.3 (i.e. latest update - which hasn't had an issues apart from syncing).
    I tried 3 different USB sync cables. Still not syncing.
    Do I really have to update my Mac OS to 10.6.8 in order to sync my phone ? I thought as long as you have iTunes 10.6.3 you're ok...
    Is there a way to update to Mac OS 10.6.8 (or later) without wiping the hard drive and doing a new install?..

    You need to place the device in recovery mode.

    Need help re-synching iPods with new computer and getting iTunes to recognize our iPods (it doesn't even recognize them when they're plugged in).
    Hubby wiped my harddrive for me, so now I need to get everything back in proper places. I'm using windows XP and installed iTunes once again (I believe it's version 8). I also installed all of my iTunes songs. Now I need to know where to go from here. We have 3 iPods and I need to get them all synched once again. I know how to create different libraries for each of us, but I can't figure out how to get our songs back into our iTunes libraries. When I open iTunes and plug in an iPod, iTunes doesn't even show that an iPod is plugged in.
    What do I do now to get each of our iPods synched with our own libraries?

    Okay, now how do I synch all of our ipods with our individual libraries (I don't want all of my kids' songs and vice versa)? We each have hundreds of songs on our ipods that we don't want to lose.

  • Why is audio out-of-synch with video on VOB files

    I used a Pioneer DVR to import ~120 8mm and Hi8mm and Digital8 analog tapes to convert them to DVD's.  These ~120 DVD's are in VOB format.  These are 4:3 video (not HD).  I did test this flow and didn't notice a few of the VOB's did not have the audio tracking properly.
    When importing them into Premiere Elements 8.01 some of the VOB files have their audio out of synch with the video, yet, they play okay in the Premiere preview window.
    Is there a setting so that when it 'conforms', that it will track the audio correctly?
    Do I need to buy a conversion tool to go from VOB to mpeg-2 (or other format?) and then import to Premiere Elements 8?
    Is there a better video editing tool to use?
    I simply want to take all these 8mm tapes / DVD's to splice the best scenes.
    I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit AMD Athlon II X4 630 2.8GHz processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory; and installed an ATI HD-4350 pcie gen2 graphics card. I have a memorex bluray dvd player.

  • I have just bought an ipad2 and was told that I could transfer all my saved photos from an old computer that I didn't want to synch with and then delete the ones I didn't want later. I can't do this without synching. How do I do this?

    I bought an ipod2 yesterday and all the photos were from an old computer (that I don't want to synch with) were transferred in the store without synching with it. I was told I could delete any I didn't want later but now find I can't delete any without synching through itunes which I don't want to do as I want to synch with a different computer. Is there a way I can just delete them all before I go and buy any apps etc or just restore to the shop settings and start again with a more selective upload as I now have over 8000 photos clogging up the memory when I only need about 1000.

    Only photos taken with the iPad, copied onto it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad - either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view.
    Photos that were synced from a computer are deleted by moving/removing/de-selecting them from where they were synced from and then re-syncing. If you want to remove them all then normally you could just sync an empty folder (in terms of photos) to the iPad, but as you don't want to sync at the moment you can't do that.
    You can reset the iPad back to factory settings and start from scratch with it : Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content And Settings

    Hi all,
    I have an iPhone 4s 32Gb which until recently was synched with iTunes on my Macbook Pro, however I had an appointment at a Genius Bar due to no 3G after switching to EE, the guy very quickly sorted the issue out, due to an Onovo Profile, but since then it says it is synced with a Genius Bar iTunes!
    What are my options please guys? I am on iOS 7 and was really going to upgrade to iOS8 due to screen size, battery performance etc.

  • Synching with more than one computer and attempting to delete more than one

    Rage is not the word. I have been having the worst time with this thing! UGH! 1st I have more than one computer that has different music on each, but this thing will only sync with 1 and delete anything from another library already added. CRAZY! Second I wanted to rip my cds to my computer without being connected to the internet and itunes won't recong the music added at a later time. I have to be connected to the internet for it to Id the music as I am ripping...CRAZY! Then I was attempting to delete the duplicated music that was not Id and it would only allow me to delete one song at a time...CRAZY! Is there a way to have this thing synch with more than 1 computer? Delete songs in a group and not everything in sight. If so how and if anyone has any remedies for the rest of this craziness I would be most appreciative. I took me forever to even figure how to get to the point to post this. I beginning to feel very sorry I bought this thing. I thought I could rip my cds, and use my work and home computers to synch with it. Please someone tell me I wasn't wrong for making this assumption. Will I be able to sych with other ipods? I bought this thing thinking I could was I wrong. I haven't even attempted that yet.     You can't "sync" that is automatically update an iPod from multiple libraries or computers. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply.

    That's correct, iTunes (and other music programs) downloads the information from an online database that contains the details of many thousands of CDs.

    Click on the first track you want to delete in a list, hold down the shift key and click on the last one, this highlights everything in between. Press the delete key

    What do you want to sync with other iPods, iTunes? You can't sync one iPod with another, you can only update from iTunes. If you are adding a second iPod for your own use, just connect the new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update all songs and playlists, selected playlists only or you can manage it manually.     I recently reset my windows 7 laptop. Ever since, itunes has not been synching with my 4th gen ipod nano. The device is being recognised and charges, but music would not synch. This wasn't too much of an issue for a while. But today I wanted to update my music so i tried updating itunes and restoring my ipod to factory settings and seeing if that helped. it successfully wiped the device, but will still not upload music. Whenever I click synch I begins the process but immediately states the synch is complete even though no music has been added. So now I have an empty ipod which cannot have any music put on it.

    You probably need to set up automatic syncing.  If you do not set it up, it will still "sync" but it will sync nothing.
    In iTunes 12, select the iPod so that you see its Summary settings screen (click the "device button" on horizontal bar).  In the iPod's sidebar, under Settings, click Music.  To the right is the iPod's Music settings screen, where you tell iTunes how to sync your iPod.
    Check the box for Sync Music.  This enables automatic syncing for songs.  Below that, if your entire iTunes library fits on your iPod, you can choose the option to sync Entire music library.
    Otherwise, you can choose to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Then, select what you want to sync from the lists below.  On convenient way to set this up is to create one or more playlists in your iTunes library with songs just for the iPod.  Or you can use existing playlists.  On the iPod's Music settings screen, find and select (checkmark) just those playlists under Playlists.
    When you click Apply, iTunes syncs your iPod with your selection(s) on the iPod's Music settings screen, and keeps it "in sync" automatically.

    iTunes will only transfer music from the iPhone that were bought at Apple's iTunes store. You'll need to use a third party program such as Senuti to transfer music you got from other sources.
