How 2 - embed watermark in PDF that obscures content if copied

I'm being asked to embed a watermark into corporate documentation that would - when an attempt is made to photocopy - obscure the content to a degree that the copy would be useless.
Can this be done in Acrobat, or is a thrid-party vendor app required?

I'm not explaining the demand well enough.  You're right, the app won't effect the photo
copier.  What I'm being asked to do ("attempt" is a better way of describing this) is to create a watermark in the PDF that has the attributes ofl:
a) not obscuring the document when printed from the hard-drive.
b) significantly obsuring the document if the printed document is photocopied (like the old school method of putting black type on a red background).
SHHEESH!
I've seen a few very expensive thrid-party apps that will allow for this type of "redaction", but I don;t have a $1500 budget for this little effort. So ...

As mentioned you must have Acrobat XI Pro in order to run a Preflight that will embed fonts.

I constantly need to embed PDF files onto Excel documents as well as extract/open/view PDF files from Excel documents. I am unable to do so with a macbook, i know that there is a workaround but it's such a tedious process. Is there a software i can buy or setting that i can do so that i can embed and open PDF files easily as i need to view these files multiple times a day for work.

Download and install Adobe Reader: Adobe Reader Install for all versions
Open the PDF file using it. If security restrictions don't prevent it you could also print it.

  • How can I create a PDF that conforms to PDFX/1-a:2001 form Pages

I have a 358 page B&W document created in PAGES - I need to submit this to the printers (Lightning Source) as a PDFX/1-a:2001. I have Adobe Acrobat Professional and Distiller. However, pdfs created by PAGES cannot be converted by Acrobat into PDFX/1-a:2001 (at least I haven't been able to figure out how to!). The solution proposed by Lightning Source is to:
print to a Postscript file first, then process the PostScript file using Adobe Acrobat Distiller Professional Version 6 or newer.
This allows you to produce a PDF that is of optimal compliance with our printing process (PDFX/1-a:2001 recommended)
The problem is that when PAGES creates the Postscript file it doesn't retain the correct sizing - it shifts it from 216x140mm to Letter size (the original document shifts to the lower-left corner surrounded by blank page). This size change continues when Distiller creates the PDFX/1-a:2001 so their solution doesn't work.
Anyone who has actually achieved this or with suggestions - all advice gratefully received!

Peter, thank you for your suggestions - I was a bit daunted by the colorsync filters, etc., however, after much searching I've put together an apparent solution. I'll find out if it works in a few days when Lightning Source get back to me:
Creating a Lightning Source pdf from a Pages document
Here is a walkthrough of the process I go through to create PDF in the format Lightning Source requires for B&W inner text - PDFX/1-a:2001. You need PAGES, ACROBAT DISTILLER and ACROBAT PROFESSIONAL.
In PRINT dialog go to the PDF button and select SAVE AS POSTSCRIPT.
Open this Postscript file in Distiller, it should save it as PDFX/1-a:2001.
If the page size is incorrect go to the following instructions.
Your pdf should be ready now to go to LS.
IF THE PAGE SIZE HAS BEEN MODIFIED
This was my major challenge as OS X’s export to Postscript seems to modify the file to A4 or Letter size. You need the following Applescript (thanks to Gregory Ledger for this essential tool):
    http://macproductionartist.wordpress.com/2009/04/01/really-cropping-pages-in-acr obat/)
    tell application "Adobe Acrobat Pro"
tell active doc
repeat with i from 1 to count of pages
tell page i
set cbox to crop box
set media box to cbox
end tell
end repeat
end tell
end tell
With your new pdf opened in Acrobat Professional use the DOCUMENT: CROP PAGES dialog box.
Set the margins of the Crop Box to the required dimensions.
Keep the pdf open in Acrobat Pro.
Now run the APPLESCRIPT above - this modifies the pdf so that the page size is modified to match the new crop size.
Save your pdf and this should now be ready for use at LS.
Gregory Ledger also recommends exporting the cropped pdf to Postscript and then running this through Distiller again to ensure any artefacts are removed.
Thanks again for your time and suggestions, Richard

  • How do I transfer a PDF that I downloaded to my laptop?

So I downloaded a pdf file to my ipad from Hightail.  The file expired so it no longer sits on their site.  My harddrive crashed so I don't have the file anymore.  But it lives in my ipad.  Good Reader did nothing to get it off my ipad.  There HAS to be a way to get it off of there!  Clicking the file on the ipad does not bring up any type of "E-mail this doc" or anything else.  I can just move it to another app like iBooks or Kindle.  I can't browse the device via my MBP either.  HELP!
    Paul

The pdf is in ibooks on my ipad.  That is the only place it lives.  There is nothing in the downloads folder.  If I copuld just get Good Reader to SEE the file, I think half the battle is won.  But getting Good Reader to even SEE the file or trying to get the file INTO Good Reader is becoming a nightmare.  How do I get the pdf file into Good Reader?
This is what the website says:
How do I transfer files to/from GoodReader?
There are several ways to do that:
Computer-to-GoodReader: using USB cable. Read more here.
Computer-to-GoodReader: using WiFi-connection. If your device and computer are connected to the same WiFi network, use WiFi-transfer window to transfer your files wirelessly. See the WiFi File Transfer Manual.
Internet-to-GoodReader: use built-in web-browser to browse for files to download, or enter their URLs to start downloading immediately. See the Web Downloads Manual.
Other apps-to-GoodReader: use inter-app Document Interchange (a.k.a. Open In... functionality) to exchange files between apps (including Apple's Mail app to transfer E-Mail attachments to GoodReader). Works both ways - GoodReader can open files stored in other apps, and other apps can open files stored in GoodReader. Apple's Document Interchange works only with apps that explicitly support this feature.
E-Mail Servers-to-GoodReader: access E-Mail servers via IMAP or POP3 protocol to download e-mail attachments. Read more here.
WebDAV Servers-to-GoodReader: connect to WebDAV servers to download and upload files. Read more here. You can also sync files and folders.
Dropbox-to-GoodReader: connect to Dropbox to download and upload files. Read more here. You can also sync files and folders.
SkyDrive-to-GoodReader: connect to SkyDrive to download and upload files. Read more here. You can also sync files and folders.
Google Drive-to-GoodReader: connect to Google Drive to download and upload files. Read more here.
SugarSync-to-GoodReader: connect to SugarSync to download and upload files. Read more here. You can also sync files and folders.
FTP Servers-to-GoodReader: connect to FTP servers to download and upload files. Read more here (FTP protocol is insecure, use SFTP access for confidential documents). You can also sync files and folders.
SFTP Servers-to-GoodReader: connect to SFTP servers to download and upload files. Read more here. You can alsosync files and folders.
AFP Servers-to-GoodReader: connect to AFP servers (shared Mac folders, Apple Time Capsule, etc.) to download and upload files. Read more here. You can also sync files and folders.
SMB Servers-to-GoodReader: connect to SMB servers (shared Windows folders, various NAS drives, etc.) to download and upload files. Read more here. You can also sync files and folders.
Other iPhone/iPod/iPad-to-GoodReader: if your device is on the same WiFi network with another iPhone/iPod/iPad with any application that supports WebDAV access - for example, another copy of GoodReader, or any other WebDAV-capable file sharing application - you can use the Connect to Servers feature to exchange files with that application. Read more here.
Device Photo Album: import pictures and recorded videos from and export pictures to it
NONE of these is what I need.  I need to open it from ipad to Good Reader.

I use to be abel to create a PDF that I could drag onto the desktop of an email and it would show up as part of the e-mail when opened as well as an attatchement. Is there an actual procedure for creating one or is it random?  Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't?

There is no procedure. Whether it shows up or not is purely dependent on the receivers email application and their preferences.
As always, I suggest if you want to do something like that, you should create an HTML email. There's a bit more control although it isn't foolproof either.

  • Properties of a PDF that Affect Direct Text Copying to Other Programs?

I am using a program that Acrobat Pro XI does not convert its files to (e.g. word). Therefore, I select & copy sentences from PDFs and paste them into this program. Most of the time, copying special characters like the greek letter psi from a PDF shows up as “Y” when I paste it into the other program. However, there are some PDFs that actually paste psi correctly.
What’s interesting to note is that these different properties are observed in similar PDFs. For example, my professor posted lecture notes as PDFs: notes from lecture 4 allow me to copy&paste all special characters properly, while lecture 7 notes do not, even though they look very similar as documents.
Can anybody think of any properties/settings that may be different between the two PDFs? Even if I cannot fix the problem, at the very least I might be able to predict which ones allow direct copying.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Note:  "Y" vs. "Psi" registration is independent of the program I paste into.  Word follows the exact same copying trend as my other other program

Not sure why you cannot convert to WORD in AA XI. Just use File>Save As and select the WORD option.
As to the psi, it may be that the font used in one of the files was different and you do not have it on your computer, so the copy used the closest version it could find. You can use ctrl-D to check the fonts in the system. Since you mentioned psi, do not expect the conversion of mathematics to WORD to be done well or at all. It may be the fonts used were from MathType and you would need the MathType fonts on your machine in that case. It would be a lot easier if we could look at the PDFs, but they may not be available for general posting. If you like, you could try a private message and setup to send the files by e-mail to review.

  • How to embed font into PDF - Listener 2.0.2 FOP configuration

I need to embed custom font into PDF report in order to print one of Slovenian characters: Č (C with caron) This character shows as # sign when I generate standard PDF report using Apex 4.2.2 and Listener 2.0.2. As far as I understand 14 native Adobe PDF fonts are based on Windows 1252 encoding. This encoding doesn't include mentioned Slovenian character.
    Oracle White paper http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/apex/learnmore/custom-pdf-reports-1953918.pdf says:
"APEX Listener 2.0.2 supports only the Base-14 fonts. To configure additional fonts, see this document: Apache(tm) FOP: Fonts "
I was able to embed my custom font into standard Apache FOP report server. Solution consist of saving two files my_font.ttf and my_font.xml to server and update of FOP userconfig.xml file (fonts part where path to saved 2 files have to be specified)
How can I do this on Apex Listener 2.0.2 ? Where is located userconfig.xml file?
    Simon

    Hello Ivaylo Mutafchiev,
There is no way we can control the fonts in the created PDF / while creating the PDF using the class cl_document_bcs in your PDF creation logic.
You can try some other approach of creating PDF from the Smartforms OTF stream data .
Try using the follosing FM for the PDF creation and sending email:
    CONVERT_OTF_2_PDF
    CONVERT_OTF_AND_MAIL
    SO_OBJECT_SEND
CONVERT_OTF_AND_MAIL_NEW (Try this but this FM still uses  the class that you are using currently. But give it a try and see the results)
    Hope this answers your question.
    Thanks,

  • Watermarks on pdfs that don't show up except while working in acrobat

I have tried everything and can't get my watermark to show except when I'm working on the PDF in acrobat. Once it's been created, the watermark does not appear. I have checked the boxes that say: "show while viewing" and "show while printing". This is my first time. I've watched several videos, gone over and over each item in the diaglogue box. Help!

    I really appreciate this help.
I'm using Acrobat X. And on mine, there IS a page range option--it's in the upper righthand corner of the dialogue box, in mine, it's red and underlined. You can choose all pages or select a page range. I selected all pages each time.
Now I'm really stumped. I went through your steps doing exactly what you said, first one one page and then on my 192-page doc (a copy of it), and it has worked perfectly on both!
I SWEAR I did exactly this before and the watermark did not show up in Apple preview, only in Acrobat Pro. I wonder what I was doing wrong? Possibly the "save as"? I don't know.
In any event, you are an angel. I will keep these instructions and follow them. I am really scratching my head as I read everything I could find about how to do it, the point was well made that you had to save it. I think I tried just saving it and also "save as"....but this has definitely worked and I am VERY VERY grateful to you.
    Many many many thanks!!
