How are quicktime 'unknown files' created?

Occasionally when i'm importing digitized clips, I get an error message saying one file couldn't be imported: "File Error: Unknown file."
Such 'bad' files are always the last clip of whatever tape it came from. But these are sometimes quite large in size, ranging from a few MB to 5+ GB.
What are these files and how are they made? Can I safely delete these or do they contain important information?

Are you receiving this error message when you IMPORT or when you CAPTURE new material? If it's when you import already existing or captured material from another source, it usually means that one of the files you tried to import isn't supported by FCP.

I use MacBook and keep my iPhoto library on external hard drive. External disk got disconnected accidentally and I was requested to import the library again.
I imported library from my external drive but the file created by iPhoto is not visible and I cannot find it either in folder Pictures or using Spotlight. However, I can see that available space on my MacBook hard drive is reduced for 10GB, which is actually the size of my iPhoto library.
Any suggestion how to find invisible file created by iPhoto and delete it from the hard disk on my computer? Many thanks for your help.

Do a Spotlight search for "Library6.iPhoto" on your boot drive and that will tell you where the iPhoto LIbrary is hiding.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. What format are the .tmp files created by hp scanner deskjet f2400? I had a customer get the dreaded "out of space" error after scanning over a hundred pages that she was going to have all in one multipage pdf. So all that work was gone (each page was a painstaking layout of multiple elements, etc.), except for the hpfAAAA.tmp files.
I'm trying to recover the data. I should say, the data is now recovered, but now I must figure out a way to use it. How can I open these HP .tmp files? What format are they saved in? There is no human-readable header to give me a clue.
If anyone can help me, it would be much appreciated. You will be saving a very nice woman many hours of work duplicating what she already did. Thanks,

There would be no way to read the .tmp file. Unfortunately she will need to free up space on her hard drive before attempting to scan the documents again.

One way of doing this is to write a PL/SQL procedure that uses UTL_FILE to read the file and DBMS_OUTPUT to display the contents to the users.

You can try to extract them to a folder and then try to install using the setup file.
Or you can try to download the .exe file ( Small File ) for the software you have and then run the .exe file and it will start the installation. Both .exe and .7z file for the application should be in same location.

How can I recover files created in the guest account?

I set up a guest account for the kids to use, and my wife then used my Mac to type up a word document (for over 3 hours) and saved it at the end of the evening. The next day she returned, and it had gone! I now read that the "Guest account" deletes all files when the computer is switched off (what idiot decided to make this deletion so immediate and so permanent, I am perplexed, why not at least put them in a temporary folder?).
This document must still be there, surely, just "invisible". Please please, how can I get it back without parting with hundreds of pounds for file recovery document, it is just one file from yesterday!
(I switched from PCs to Mac's when we bought a new Vista laptop at work and couldn't find the "file" and "open" commands on a drop-down menu top-left of screen - the Mac-fans at work promised me that Macs were "so intuitive" and "so much better than a PC". They lied. Macs and PCs are both designed by geeky-types who want more and more complex systems, when all I want is a computer that does what I ask without too much clever stuff (like deleting 3 hours of work because my wife happened to be in the wrong account). I have wasted as long trying to find said file....I'm so depressed.

I'm sorry you've lost files, but when you set up an account as Guest, there's a message that clearly states "When a guest user logs out, all information and files in the guest account's home folder are deleted". If you want an account where files are retained, you should create an Admin or Standard type.
You will need to use data recovery techniques to see if your file can be recovered. The more that you use your computer, the greater the risk that the file will be overwritten. You can contact a professional data recovery service such as DriveSavers (which will be expensive, but you can judge the value of the file) or try something like Data Rescue. The latter has a demo which you can install to determine if your file can be recovered, and then, on purchase, you can actually recover the file.

Multiple unknown files created when working in Illustrator CS4 on Windows 7

If this has been addressed before, I apologize. I've been googling and searching this forum for a mention of this but haven't been able to find anything.
Whenever I'm working with a file in Illustrator, multiple unknown files are created. When I close Illustrator or reboot my computer, they remain. They have no file extension and their file size is almost always in the same range. In the screenshot below, each file ranges from 7MB to 7.99MB. I've previously had 100+ 14MB to 14.99MB files created. They can be deleted with no consequence.
I'm currently on the most recently released Windows 7 build that you can download from Microsoft's Website. This problem seems to only occur with Illustrator.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Either auto-save files from Illustrator or some sort of security backups created by the operating system for indexing purposes while the main file is still open. Check the respective prefs in AI and possibly your indexing settings in W7.

in labview, i created an avi file using 'microsoft video 1' compression codec and with each frame i have a string data attached to it.
i tried to load the avi file in matlab for further processing, but 'aviread.m' doesn't seem to work.
also does anyone know in matlab how can i play/read an avi file (created by labview) frame by frame and also have access to the data string attached to each frame?

Iphoto - how are the photo files managed and stored ?

I am one of those who migrated from the PC to this wonderfull world of the Mac. So please excuse my PC based way of thinking.
I have many thosands of photos, (aprx. 8,000 +++ )
I used to organized my photos on an external hard disk and and I would create folder that would hold a group of photos; for example (A folder labeled "Vacation on New York" will hold all the photos for that event)
Now on my iMac, I could import all the photos on that folder and create an event on iphoto called "Vacation on NY"
The only question I have is where do those file phisically go to? Where are those files with their names and extensions? What folder or directory do they go to once I import them into iphoto?
I need to know this so that I could get a back up and know how to manage the files.
Also...
I would like to know how can I close all events at once.

The files are copied into the iPhoto Library which is in your Pictures Folder.
Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
By way of explanation:
The iPhoto Library is a Package File. This is simply a folder that looks like a file in the Finder. This is to protect the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to look inside?
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning: Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things,, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
To use an editor with iPhoto: You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
To use the files in other apps, upload them etc
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps. If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later: You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File: a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected. 3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

How do I delete an audio file created in Quick Time Player and saved in my Movies folder as a .mov file? I can't drag it to Trash, and I can't access the delete option in the Edit dropdown, and Help doesn't seem to cover that topic. If all you're trying to do is move the files from the Windows external to the Mac external, you can simply connect them both to the Mac and drag the files from the Windows drive to the Mac drive. If you want to move the files back and forth between them, you'll need to establish the format of the Windows external. Macs can read and write to FAT32 and exFAT (which can handle files larger than 4GB) formatted drives but can only read NTFS formatted drives without additional software. How are PDF Annual Reports Created?

Hello all.
Quick question about annual reports / other formal PDF presentations. It seems to me that a great deal of creative and copy goes into making an Annual Report. Pictures, type, financial tables/graphs, etc must all be combined into one document that has a consistent brand theme throughout.
My question is how are these created in practice? Is there some special publishing software or is it a combination of many different programs? I'm looking for a way to semi-automate PDF creation by maintaining a template in Acrobat / Photoshop that is styled how I like and that feeds off several word and excel documents. Any advice please?

Most folks would create such a document in something like WORD. It allows you to link to databases and such. When it is ready to be finalized, you would simply print to the Adobe PDF printer or use the PDF Maker.

How are the User Id created

We went live with the external posting for e-recruiting and the user id's generated contain a nine char value in the back end. Now we are working for internal candidates and this question poped up because for any internal employee who's applying for a job should have his PERNR number too in the user id(correct me if I am wrong), so that his with his user id he can login into any HR related applications. This is when CUA is coming into picture. CUA is going to be implemented to our productions system which currently for external postings only, will this create for internal problems.
Is there to know how these nine character user id's are getting generated.

You are user that you created a new account with the same primary email address, and/or you hadn't changed the address on the existing account ?
Only Apple can potentially delete an account, and if you had asked them to do so and they did delete it then its purchase history will also have gone.
