How are things going in the OS 9 world?
Its been over a year since I last booted into OS 9. But for more than 6 years I was using a Performa 6360. It would often crash on websites and woudl give me so many problems that I have yet to have since I bought an ibook with Tiger. Yes there are and remain advantages to OS 9 that I really miss in X. However I would never ever go back, as OSX is way too powerful and tons more stable.
No this is not a question, but I request for feedback. Some people here claim that their OS 9 Mac never crashes on websites, but this was the opposite of my experience. My Mac running OS 9.1 would often crash. Yes I was running IE 5.x.
Hi, John -
My primary machine is a G4 (AGP) model; it has two internal drives, one partitioned into three volumes, plus external firewire drives. All are bootable - I have seven bootable volumes on this machine, each with an OS on it, ranging from OS 9.1 to an early OSX.
This machine runs 24/7, and is shut down only when there's an electrical storm in the area.
I still use OS 9.1 near 100% of the time. It does everything I want, so there's been no reason for me to change.
The last re-install I did of OS 9.1 was over 5 years ago. And it does not crash. I may go two or three weeks between restarts.
It took only a bit of tweaking to get it stable, mainly turning off all extensions and control panels I do not need, plus resisting the urge to install a lot of 3rd-party GUI enhancers, bells, and whistles.
With OS 9 I feel like the driver; with OSX I feel like a passenger. I'd rather be the driver.
With regard to IE, the prime reason for it crashing seems to be running out of memory. It has a memory leak, and if the user stays on-line long enough it will eventually use up all it has been given, then crash. Giving it a lot of memory (80 to 100 thousand is not excessive) helps, but unless IE is quit and then restarted before it is all used up, it will crash.
There are some sites, more as time goes by, which are not IE Mac v. 5.x friendly - but that's true for just about all OS 9 browsers. Not all webpage designers or coders are willing to code their sites for multiple browsers and versions.

Adobe Creative Suite 3 users - how are things going with Leapord?
I am a graphic designer as a profession. I am strongly considering picking up a copy of Leapord but I want to make sure things are smooth and functional with the Creative Suite before I dive in. Any horror stories or perks?
Upgrade on my Macbook went fine with no problems for Photoshop.
However if you do what I did for the desktop there is much more hassle. I replaced my G5 with a new iMac so not only did I have to get all the files and applications over but then upgrade to Leopard as well. After a Super Duper backup of my old G5, I deactivated Photoshop. After deactivation, you should use the Photoshop install disk to completely remove CS3 from the old computer before starting Migration Assistant. I did not do that but moved the CS3 folder to the trash figuring migration assistant would not move it. Evidently there are files that are installed by Adobe but are not removed unless you run the uninstaller. Migration went very well for my files and other applications. There was no sign that anything CS3 was moved.
After I verified that things were working correctly on my new iMac, I ran the Leopard upgrade. That also went well with no problems. Then I tried to install Photoshop on the new machine and it would not install. I had to run the uninstall option first. Evidently there are many shared components that had to be removed. After successful uninstall, reinsert the install disk, Photoshop installed normally. I then reactivated and all is well. -
How are they going to resolve the 4s 3g problem??
How are they going to resolve the 4s 3g problem?
Huh? If WiFi is available, the phone always uses WiFi over 3G. This is NOT a problem with the 4S.

How are files uploaded to the file system?
How are files uploaded to the system? I do not see any documentation on the SAP Cloud Appliance Library regarding this.
Hi Daniel,
the majority of the appliances run the Linux operating system. You can use native scp (Linux) or winscp (Windows) to upload files to the file system.
If you google for "upload data to Linux aws instance" you should find a lot of documentation on the topic.

When apple no longer includes an optical drive how are you going to burn an itunes playlist
when apple no longer includes an optical drive how are you going to burn an itunes playlist
Well, I don't want to buy an optical drive if I buy a new Mac without one. However, iTunes will not allow "burning" a playlist to anything except a real optical drive.
Now, I am not running Mountain Lion so I don't know if iTunes for Mountain Lion allows it or not - could someone please let me know if it is possible.
For me, on Snow Leopard, I cannot find a way to burn, create, duplicate - whatever you want to call it - a playlist to a virtual drive, a USB drive - nothing but a physical drive.
It just makes me wonder if iTunes provides (will provide) an alternative when there is no physical drive included. -
Even though default account is set in the mail settings, all out going mails are send from my apple ID how to sort
Hello,
Were you able to resolve this? If so, could you please share how? I am having the exact same issue.
Thanks,

I downloaded Perez Prado album today and song # 18 is missing. Q: how is iTunes going to send that song to me?
I am not expert in these, but please check out the following things and see whether it would solve your issue. (All these changes can be easily rolled back in case I'm wrong :). So make note of what you do)
As per your httpd.conf, you have chosen an automatic configuration of Apache by OWCI installer itself. What it does is create an imageserver.conf file in a separate directory and these settings will be included in your httpd.conf as you can see in the first line: Include "C:/bea/alui/plumtreeconf/".
If you check the imageserver.conf in that location, you would find a line like: Alias /imageserver/ "C:/bea/alui/ptimages/imageserver/". This aliases the original path "C:/bea/alui/ptimages/imageserver/" to /imageserver"
To confirm whether this is done right, check the following:
1. Acces 'http://<server ip / server name / localhost >/' from your browser
This should display the Apache home page (as per your httpd.conf, it uses the default port 80; so no port number required)
2. Access 'http://<server ip>/imageserver/' from your browser
This should display the directory structure (if its not disabled) inside your 'C:/bea/alui/ptimages/imageserver/' folder. Also confirm that all the subfolders are accessible.
3. If all the above is right, it means that your imageserver settings are right. Please check your portalconfig.xml for the correct settings: For example, <setting name="HTTPPort"> should be 7001 in your case. If its something else, change it and restart Weblogic for the settings to take effect.
Hope this helps. -
How are you going to backup your system?
Are you going to backup your files to an external hard drive? If so what?
Are you doing to backup your files to your 2nd internal hard drive? How?RAID is not a backup
Yes… it is. Backup is by definition is "the procedure for making extra copies of data in case the original is lost or damaged". Nothing more.
With a RAID mirror you have two or more originals which makes it a backup. Does it provide an archive or revision history of your data… no. But that's beside the point. It is a backup. Does it protect you against all circumstances that results in data loss… no. Again, that's beside the point.
A RAID mirror is still a backup,
RAID is protection from hardware failure. If a drive dies, you have a full working copy of everything... that's great.
Not always true! Under some RAID schemes a member failure will result in complete data loss. RAID is not always about "protection from hardware failure".
Only something that archives… [snip]
Not everyone is prepared to and sometimes not even capable of having such a rigourous scheme as you do. For the vast majority of users out there who have no contingency plan what so ever the best solution is in fact a RAID mirror as it's a no effort and cheap solution. It's a solution that protects against a very specific circumstance. For a more complete protection you are right, other means should make up the rest of the package.
While RAID mirrors shouldn't be a standalone solution it should be considered as part of a complete scheme. -
I have a Time Capsule of the 4th generation and I am pretty impressed since I just had a fried harddrive on my 3 month old Imac and Time Capsule restored it fully including all programs etc. without having me to put in all serial numbers etc. for that I give it an A+. However what I find very frustrating is the very short and incomplete user manual and setup instructions. I give those a D-. It does not explain the consequences of certain choices to a normel non computer gig user like me:
I do not understand what the consequences and difference is between the security setting WPA/WPA2 and WPA2 when setting it up. It would be helpful if the manual would explain something like: If you set it onto WPA2 then computers older than XXX years will not able to hook up to the internet through your router...or the likes, since I slowly supect this may be the reason for some of my troubles.
I also have a 5 year old PC with vista connected to the Time Capsule. It can wireless connect to the Time Capsule and access the printer (I have managed that after some painful hours...) but it cannot access the internet with that PC through the timecapsule wireless, only if I hook it up with a cable. Why? Does that have to do with the fact that I have set the TIme Capsule to WPA2?
Our PS3 can connect wireless, no problem. However, I friend of mine tried it with a quite new Toshiba Notebook and he could see the Time Capsule but again it shows the line from the Time Capsule to the internet blocked. All other computers linked with data cable to the Time Capsule are connected to the internet no problem. What have we done wrong? Should I change the security setting to WPA/WPA2?
I tried the latter, but then another problem does come up, which was there from beginning on: When I change the settings for my Time Capsule my Imac suddenly cannot find the Timne Capsule anymore, even so I am only 3feet away from it. When I set it up for the first time 3 month ago it drove me crazy. The very first time it found the Time Capsule right away. But when I discuverd a mistake in my initial setup and I went through the settings again to change stuff it suddenly could not find the Time Capsule anymore. Only after frustrating 20 times or so with turning wi-fi on and off several times inbetween did it suddenly find the Time Capsule in the set up menu. However, when I tried changing my security setting to WPA/WPA2 today to see whether this solves my other problems again it could not find the Time Capsule when I was finished with the settings and I had to give up/cancel. Why is that???
I would really appreciate some help here. But please I am not a computer gig and normally always had assistance with these things. On the other hand I am not all stupid either (even so these manuals assuming we all grew up sleeping on a computer make me feel stupid).....
Thank you all in advanceHello Schimi. The Time Capsule is a kind of product that offer you two possibility:
- To use the TC as a router or as an external HD.
The difference between WPA and WPA 2 are:
- They are two kinds of internet connection.
WPA uses dynamic key encryption , which means that the key is constantly changing and makes the invasion of a wireless network more difficult than WEP . WPA is considered one of the highest levels of wireless security for your network and is recommended if your devices support this kind of encryption . Newer routers offer WPA2 security . WPA2 is compatible with WPA , but offers higher security level . In fact, it meets the high standards of many government agencies . If the router and computer support WPA2 , this should be your choice.
If you need any help or if you find some difficult setting up it you can contact Apple Support.
I am sure that they can help you with that.
I am sory for the delay. I holpe that you solve your issue. -
How are items stored in the iPhone?
Where are files stored on the iPhone? When I connect to my computer, where should I look? I am especially trying to find messages and vm files.
Thank you.Message and VM (virtual memory?) files... ? Which specific applications? It sounds to me like you've become used to managing such things on an alternate platform (Android?) and now you're trying to apply the same thinking to the iPhone? It's not the same and usually not necessary to connect your phone to the computer for much of anything these days. But then again, I use my phone as it was designed and don't walk the fine line of digging into its guts.

How possibly dust going under the back glass of the phone?
I see some specs of dust under the back glass of my iPhone4S. How possibly is that? It seems that the glass is perfectly attached to the back, how could they go there? Is there any solution for me to swap them out or how to prevent more dust going underneath the glass? Since there is no Apple service in my country, so it seems that I have to deal with it? Not a big problem but it is very annoying. Please help!!!
You meant that there is no way for dust coming under the glass, right? Cause I am going to buy a pair of screen protector to cover the front and back of the phone.I wonder it can improve the situation?
