How best to edit long sections of footage?

After a week flailing in the darkness, maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I have many VHS and 8mm tapes dating back to 1986, each with up to 2.5 hours of footage.
They are all now safely saved on an external hard drive but I am having trouble when trying to edit them down into manageable chunks (clips).
I have iMovie 10 and Final Cut Express 4. I would like to systematically play through each tape from the hard drive and save, name and tag various clips for use in movies on different subjects e.g. holidays, individual family members, houses, friends etc.
I feel there must be a better, or quicker, method than repeatedly trawling through all the tapes and moving suitable clips to the timeline every time I want to make a movie on a different subject.
The hardware is an iMac from 2008 with 1TB storage.
Any suggestions eagerly anticipated.

Problem solved. iMovies 9, already on the system but unused for years, does exactly what is wanted.
Bye bye iMovie 10 until Apple sort it out.

  • How do I edit long (3hrs.) podcast that are saved in mp4 format?

I have several 3 hour podcasts in mp4 format. I'd like to edit the length and save portions of the podcasts as mp3 files. I tried burning the mp4 file to an audio CD, but due to it's length (3 hrs.), it will not fit on a blank CD-R. I downloaded Audacity. Can this do the trick? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Glad that you finally sorted out what you were doing and discovered DV AVI.
In your particular situation Prism would serve your purposes of generating the DV AVI 4:3 since your footage is 640 x 480. However, for others with different footage, the free Prism shortcoming is that it cannot offer DV AVI widescreen 16:9; whereas MPEG Streamclip can do the job for 16:9 as well as 4:3.
QuickTime Alternative 1.8.1 that does come with the MPEG Streamclip's required MPEG2 Playback Component (free) also meets the Premiere Elements requirement for QuickTime installed on computer with Premiere Elements to work. This works in spite of the fact that QuickTime Alternative 1.8.1 is not the latest version of the regular QuickTIme.
In post 2 of the following older thread, I detail the use of Prism (for 4:3) and MPEG Streamclip (for 4:3 and 16:9) to produce the DV AVI file.
Finished video of project looks "weird" / slightly choppy? - Elements Village
Any questions or need clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.
Moving forward, do not use AVCHD (MPEG4 AVC/H.264) or H.264.avi in Premiere Elements. It is not supported.

  • How to edit 1920x1080 & 1280x720 & 720x480 footage in one project - HELP!

I just shot a documentary in which we used two different cameras:
Our A camera was a Panasonic Varicam 2700 shooting in 1280x720 (our desired format), mostly 30fps but at times 60fps for slow-motion sequences. We shot on P2 cards, and my computer says the native codec is ai1p.
Our B camera was a DSLR, specifically the Canon 5D Mark II which can only shoot in 1920x1080, 30fps. I've converted these files from their native H.264 codec to Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) for better workflow in FCP.
In addition, we have SD archival footage that is 720x480 and codec that is DV/DVCPro NTSC.
What is the best method for editing these three formats in FCP? Our desired output format is 1280x720 in the highest quality possible.
Therefore what should my sequence settings be? Do I need to down-convert the B-cam footage before editing or FCP will do this automatically once my settings are set? How do I deal with the archival footage?
I'm very new to editing with multiple native formats. Any help or advice you can offer will be much appreciated!
    Daphne

If you're heading for 720p then it would be more efficient to convert the DSLR to correct format and frame resolution when you're converting it. If you're using the Canon transfer plugin you don't have that option, but it may be easier to convert with a different tool. I'd try to get everything into the same format at the beginning rather than work with multiple formats. It may take more effort and time up front, but I think it's worth it in the long run.

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.

Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.

If you are running Lion or later:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion even though that has it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • How Best to View/Edit Moiré on Striped Shirt

Hi, we're preparing images to send to a couple different printers (we don't know who - one is a magazine, the other a catalog printer). These particular images have a gentleman wearing a blue & white pinstriped dress shirt. The client has asked us to ensure there is not a moiré pattern when printed.
So I'm wondering the best way in Photoshop to both see the pattern properly, and then how best to tackle it.
The original files were Canon RAW files at 21MP, converted to DNG, then adjusted in ACR before opening in Photoshop as a Smart Object for final editing.
So we only see the effect when we zoom to odd percentages. And obviously the effect is worse at some zoom levels than others, especially smaller. At 100% the image looks fine.
    - How should you be viewing an image in Photoshop to get an accurate representation of the moiré pattern that would be produced when running on press? It's hard to fix something when you don't know what it actually looks like.
Secondly, I found a couple tutorials on how to remove the problem, but these seem to be geared toward color moiré patterns and using LAB to fix. The patterns here are not color moiré patterns, so I suppose that means they are luminance patterns.
    - Any good experience or tutorials on how to approach this? Do we just blur the shirt or decrease the contrast (make it a blue & light blue/grey shirt instead of blue/white)?
Thanks. I just need a little direction here to get going.

Someone else had a similar problem:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/13764#13764
I don't know if this will help you because there seems to be a lot of technical jargon used rather than an explanation of a straightforward approach.  The thread does mention a third party tool as well as a Photoshop plug-in.

How can I erase or edit "Category" section in a song? And what is this section for?

At least in my case (OS 10.7.5, iTunes 11.0.2) you can hide this (if I understand you correctly) by going to the iTunes menu bar, clicking View, then View Options.  From the drop down menu make sure that Category (under Other) isn't selected.  You'd have to do this for every playlist where you don't want "category" to appear.

  • I want to use a portion of an iTune song but the section begins 5:48 into the song. How do I edit the sound selection?

Adding iTune selections appear to be defaulted to start at the beginning of the song, and you just trim the end off. But I want to start my selection within the song. How do I edit the song to appear on the video so that I can use a portion of the song 5 minutes and 48 seconds into the song?

Here is a reply I provided last week.  Hope this helps. Noreen
Drag the song in to start of show.  There is an icon that looks like a gear at the beginning of the green song strip.  Click on this to see clip trimmer.  The song will open in the screen on the bottom half of the iMovie screen.  You drag the yellow start line to the place where you want the song to start.  As my children have shown me, watch for the spikes to see the exact place, but listening along works also.  You can trim a song from the beginning and the end so that you only use 30 seconds in the middle, if that is what you want.
I would also suggest using audio control to fade the song in, especially if you are starting at a loud point.  The default fade in is half a second.  I change that to 1.2 to 1.5, depending on the song.  Also, if one song is louder than the next, you can equalize the volume by setting sound at 120% or whatever you think sounds correct for a specific song.
When trimming for a song at the end of a slideshow, you may need to drag the black (or any color) screen in to end and set duration for a few minutes so that you will be able to trim the song.  Otherwise, the program will only drag in as much of the song as you have video remaining.  I know that sounds confusing but once you try it, you will see what I mean.  Once you have trimmed the song the way you want it, delete the black screen and fade song to end.

  • I need to know how best to import .mod files into elements 7

I need to know how best to import .mod files into elements 7

    lornamarieslade
Are you working with .mod standard or widescreen?
If .mod standard, less problematic. The file just might import without issue. Worst case would probably be changing the file extension from .mod to .mpg just prior to import.
Now .mod widescreen is another story that revolves around maintaining the 16:9 flag that scretches the video for display after encoding. Some have said that the 16:9 flag is lost in the transfer to computer; some say certain editors such as Premiere Elements just cannot read/recognize the flag. Whatever the case this is what you should consider in your Premiere Elements 7 Windows.
    a. If you need to rename the file extension from .mod to .mpg, do so prior to import.
    b. Import the .mod or .mpg counterpart into your Premiere Elements 7 project using the project preset NTSC or PAL DV Widescreen (NTSC or PAL depends on your location of interest). You will probably see that the video does not fill the space in the Edit Mode Monitor (you will probably see standard 4:3 looking image rather than widescreen 16:9 looking image).
    c. Right click the file in the Project media area, select Interpret Footage, and, in the Interpret Footage Dialog/Pixel Aspect Ratio section, dot the Conform To: and change the setting to
    D1/DV NTSC Widescreen 16:9 (1.2)
    or
    D1/DV PAL Widescreen 16:9 (1.422)
depending on your location of interest.
A while back there used to be a program called SD Copy that did the job of file name change and adding the 16:9 flag prior to import of the .mod widescreen into Premiere Elements. But, I have lost track of the SD Copy and suspect that is it no longer available. I have dealt with this issue many times at a forum that I formerly frequent. Most have reported back that this workaround worked for them. It is worth a try. I am looking forward to your results.
If you do opt to upgrade to Premiere Elements 11 Windows (please go tryout before purchase), I am eager to learn how your .mod widescreen is handled by version 11 in your computer environment.
    Thanks.

Add On...I just came across this download for SDCopy. It does not give the appearance of the original the link to which is broken. I have not downloaded and used the following since I do not have any .mod widescreen. So, no guarantees. Please let us know the outcome if you try it if Interpret Footage does not work for you.
