How best to go wireless on my old iMac?

I'd like some advice re: going wireless with my iMac SE DV graphite running OS 10.3.9. I'd like to take advantage of my new high speed internet (cable modem) service that I recently had installed since I just purchased a new iMac24"(Leopard).
Besides purchasing and installing an Airport card (plus adapter), do I also need to get an Airport base station?
Is Airport Extreme the "better" base station and can I use it?
OR..........
Is there an option to use the new iMac as its "base" ? ) Would my 2 computers be able to communicate since new iMacs already come with wireless capability?
Am I better off using a stand-alone base station and accessing it with both computers' wireless feature?
Lots of questions, I know but I would at the very least like to keep using my old iMac for surfing, but never again via dial-up!
Any tips and advice?
Thanks in advance and peace everyone.

I assume your old iMac has an ethernet port? - if so, you could look for a wireless ethernet bridge such as this one by Linksys. It connects to the computer via the ethernet socket, and thus doesn't require a driver, and can connect to any wireless-g (or slower) network. Of course as stated above if your cable modem doesn't include a wireless router you will need one. This is a much better route than using the new Mac as a base station, since with a standalone router you don't have to have the new one running in order to be able to use the old one.

If you can get both computers on the Internet at the same time without re-cabling, you have the connection infrastructure needed to enable file sharing and share those files.
That said, many users find it easier to use FireWire Target Disk mode to treat the old computer as a big Hard drive, and just drag and drop the files, or use Migration Assistant or Setup Assistent.

No I don't have another computer. I was thinking initially I would put them on my ipad but since I don't have enough gb maybe I can store them in some cloud thing? Sorry am a bit of a Luddite when it comes to all this. I just need to have them stored someplace and accessible to play when I need to. Thanks for your help.

  • How do I quickly move files from old iMac to new one?

how do I quickly move files from old iMac to a new one?

How many files, and what total size?
To move ALL your files from an old Mac, you would use Migration Assistant, using either an Ethernet or Firewire connection. It's not quick, though.
To move just a few, you COULD put the old Mac into target mode (reboot it while holding T, and connect a Firewire cable, with Thunderbolt adaptor on the new end if need be). Or you could just copy them via an external (probably USB, for compatibility) drive or flash drive, formatted Mac Extended.

  • How do I clear and save my old imac ?

    Hello
I'm sure this has been asked 1000 times, so thank you for answering again and pointing me in the right direction.
I recently bought a new iMac and sold my old one on Ebay.  My old iMac is Snow Leopard and new one will be the most up to date.
WITHOUT having my new iMac, can someone please give me step by step on how to save:
Itunes music (even the non purchased ones)
    Apps (Like Word)
My external hard drive is full, so I know the music can't be stored there.
ONCE that is done, how do I completely clean out my old iMac.  I don't have the operating system CD anymore, so I can't reinstall it that way if need be.  But I need to make sure it's a factory reset without the chance of restoring , including my iTunes ID.
Thank you in advanced and ya'll know how I will be spending my weekend.
    Thanks!

    1. Copy them all to a second external drive.
    2. Click here and follow the instructions. When you reach step 5, phone Apple and order replacement disks or buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD from the online Apple Store(this won’t work on computers which shipped with 10.6.3 through 10.6.8), insert the disk you got, restart with the C key held down, use the Disk Utility to erase the internal drive, and install a fresh OS.

  • How do you move Lightroom files from old iMac with Lightroom 4 to new iMac with Lightroom 5?

Recently bought a new iMac and installed latest version of Lighroom 5. Tried unsuccessfully to move my picture files from my old iMac with Lightroom 4 to the hard drive of my new computer which has latest Lighroom software. Ended up with 2,000 pictures that are duplicates and the keywords did not transfer with the picture files. Can anyone advise best way to resolve this problem?

That is a very good tutorial. Installing a newer version of Lightroom on the new computer will involve Lightroom creating a copy of your old catalog that is compatible with the new version. But it should be very painless.

  • How do i import pictures from my old iMac directly to my new iMac using iPhoto?

Hello! I have just got a new iMac and I am struggling with Migration Assistant to transfer data from my old iMac to the new one
I have tried to follow the standard procedure with firewire cable without luck
I am now desperately trying to find a smart way to import pictures stored in the old iPhoto (old iMac) to the new iPhoto in the new iMac
    can anyone help??
    Thanks a lot
    Valentina

thanks a lot for your tips, which unfortunately I am not able to follow as I currently stand
here is what happened, this morning when i started the new iMac I realized that i had in fact managed to complete the migration
upon start-up, the new iMac gave me the option to choose whether to log-in as the old Me (i.e. previous account in old iMac) or the new me
If choosing the old, I can access my old iPhoto and iTunes material
If I log-in as the new me, I am in the new iMac and do not know how to access neither iPhoto nor iTunes libraries
Question 1: Is there a way to access both libraries (iPhoto and iTunes) logging-in using the new credentials?
Eventually I would love to get rid of this double users accounts as I do not find it too convenient, I would rather consolidate the important data (i.e. pictures and music) in the new account
Question 2: Alternatively, if I were to follow the tip you gave me and forget about the migration altogether, can you help me locate the iPhoto library in the old iMac so that I can drag it as a single entity from the old Mac? could you also explain what I need to do to move it to the pictures folder of the new iMac?
Thanks so much for helping, pls consider me as a very basic Apple user, I appreciate you making it very easy for me to understand, do not give a lot of details for granted as I do not know a lot of stuff (for ex, I would not know where to start to "drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac")
hope you can help, make my day!

  • How to transfer data off HD of old iMac running OS 10.5.8 onto new iMac running yosemite

my older brother's 24" iMac  running Leopard 10.5.8  is having issues and shuts itself off without notice so we got him a new 27" iMac off the apple website.
We also bought the Apple Extended warranty due to his & my computer skills are limited plus he lives in another state  for a quick drop by to help with my limited skills as well.
His local non apple tech person thinks the old iMac probably has an issue with Mother board causing computer to shut itself down and suggested  replacing old mac  with a newer one which we did.
I was visiting my older brother who lives out of state a couple weeks ago when the new iMac arrived so I tried to transfer data off old HD to new iMac via USB cable but got error message saying the old iMac also had to be running OS Yosemite!
Due to how far back his old iMac OS version is, and not knowing where / how to get the newer  OS disks needed what are his options to get data from Old iMac to new iMac?
Also, his old iMac shut down again and he has not been able to get the old mac to start back up so upgrading OS's does not seem to be an option now.
Before his mac shut down, my brother  thinks someone told him that if he had iCloud set up his data could transfer via iCloud?   I have no idea if that is correct nor how to set that up.
if i remember correctly when i was there a couple weeks ago when the old iMac was running during the process of trying to transfer data I think the new computer  also gave another option on how to transfer-migrate data but I don't' remember what that was?
DUE to the old imac may not start up again, can't he have the old iMac HD removed and put into an external case and plug it into new iMac as and external HD & then take files off for use on the new iMac?
any and all suggestions / help will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Bob

Thanks  that was very helpful for transferring files and looks like it solves the problem with not having to update the Operating Systems to Yosemite.
I forgot to ask about how does one transfer actual Programs like MS Office for example from  the old drive?
Transferring files using the drag and drop process is simple enough but don't actual Programs like MS Office have a much more complicated/larger data package that may be located in various places on the old HD versus files are much smaller and are in one place?
If I remember right when i got a new iMac a few years ago, my old mac was still working so i was able to use a cable to transfer data & programs off it to newer iMac and  ALL of the Programs like Office etc. transferred over including user accounts etc.?  I may be wrong as its been a few years?
Again  Any help & or suggestions are appreciated!
    Thanks

  • I've just updated my imac 21.5. how do i transfer files from my old imac to my new imac?

    Help!
I've had an iMac 21.5 for approximately 3.5 years.
I have Aperture 3 (with loads photos) and iTunes etc on my current iMac.
I have just bought a new 21.5 iMac with all the latest upgrades etc.
As of yet I have not even taken the new iMac out of the box.
    How do I:
    1. prepare the old iMac to get ready to transfer files
    2. actually transfer the files!
    Also!
Once everything is transferred how do I make my iMac "safe" to sell? I don't want old personal data left on there for someone to have a good old snoop!
My original iMac was not supplied with any operating discs etc. It was all set up and ready to go.
    Thanks.

Regarding the old iMac.  Just delete your USER NAME from the Control Panel.  Go into System Preferences - then User/Groups and delete your account from there.
Just a bit of advice though before you do all this, go and buy yourself a remote Hard Drive, they're really good value today and copy off all of your sacred files from your old computer onto the new drive.  You could also do the same via the Backup.app
It's well worth doing....    You can easily delay the switch over for a few days and you'll then have a backup disc that you'll start to use again and again.

  • How best to transfer iPhoto Library from old Mac to new Mac

I've just taken delivery of a gleaming new 17inch iMac. (I'm very proud!)
I have an old G3 iMac with approx 1000 photo's on iPhoto. (Not sure which version but that Mac is still running OSX 10.1.5 so it's a fairly early version).
What is the best way to transfer the photo's across? I'd like to keep the album structure in place if possible.
I'm fairly sure I can do this by connecting the macs with an ethernet cable but I haven't got a clue how to do it!
Thanks in advance for any help.

Given that you've already started using the iPhoto on the new machine then yes, copying the iPhoto Library Folder from the external HD will certainly affect things. If you copy it to the default location in your Pictures Folder it will overwrite the new one.
So, now you now have two libraries and you want to merge them. How much effort have you put into the new one? If it's only a roll or two you could simply take the rolls out of the NEW iPhoto Library Folder / Originals, then copy the OLD one over - letting it over write, then import the NEW photos.
If you have a lot of work, you can merge the two libraries. For that, you'll need iPhoto Library Manager
    Regards
    TD
ps - it is quite easy to do... until you create a second library.

  • How do you transfer information from an old iMac to a new one?

transfering info from old to new iMac?

New iMacs have Firewire 800, check to see if your old Mac has Firewire 800 or Firewire 400. If it has FW 400 you need a cable like:
    http://www.amazon.com/Oyen-Digital-Firewire-1394B-Cable/dp/B0027DPM1U/ref=sr_1_1 ?ie=UTF8&qid=1343363461&sr=8-1&keywords=firewire+400+to+800+cable
You can find these at your local computer store, Best Buy, Radio Shack or of course Amazon. Simply run SA and follow the on-screen directions and you will migrate very quickly. If your old machine has a Time Machine backup you can migrate from that and use a USB connection which is considerably slower than FW but it works. You can also do wireless however DO NOT, repeat DO NOT go that route as a migration could take a week (I'm not kidding) or more and they frequently fail. Of course if both machines are FW800 then the solution is simple a simple FW800 cable connection.
