How best to handle multiple web sites using iWeb 08

I currently am using iWeb08. I am maintaining two websites; The church site resides on a Rogers server. I use Transmit as a FTP loader. The other site is an engineering society's website that is posted on Apple's server. I have an ME account just for the latter group. iWebsites is used to alternate between the two sites. The church group has a .ca web address.
Is it worth upgrading to iWeb 09? How does iWeb09 handle 2 websites? I wish I could publish both to the Mac account but have not figured out how. I must retain the rogers account for viewing the church site
Has anyone deleted iWebsites from OX10.5.6? How was it done? I know that backups are mandatory before attempting these changes.
Thanks,
Bill

In its current form, iWeb '09 doesn't handle publishing well at all!
I keep all my sites on separate domain files, each in their own folder. Any site is launched in iWeb by double clicking the domain file. I start each new site from a new, blank domain file.
I keep all my website folders in a folder in a second dock so that I can launch any site with two mouse clicks - faster than you can launch iWebsites!
You can publish as many sites as you want to one MobileMe account but you can only have domain name forwarded as Cname. Any more have to use masking with all its inherent problems.
I would be more inclined to dump MobileMe and publish both sites to a decent hosting company.
The new iWeb '09 FTP works for some. I have tested it with my server - Host Excellence - which doesn't force you to upload to a Public_html folder and this goes as planned.
Having said that, I still publish to a local folder as I optimize and upload my files using Web Site Maestro. Once you have published your site for the first time, this application will then use its Smart Handling feature to process the changed files only.
Unless all your viewers use Macs you have to optimize to get your pages to download in that browser that all the Fred Flintstones of the world use.

  • Create and manage multiple web sites using iWeb and GoDaddy

Now that Mobile Me is going away and the other comments in this discussion relate to iwebsites were written several years ago, I am looking for  new and up-to-date information.
I have been building and maintaining a website using my MobileMe account and porting it over to GoDaddy.
I need to re-write the site if for no other reason than it is getting cluttered and needs freshining.
I would also like to create some other seperate web sites with their own URL
    1)  Is iWeb capable of doing this?
    2)  All the information I have found on iWebsites is at least 3 years old and there does not seem to be updates to that software.
    3)  Are there other tools that will allow me to do this?
And finally, does the group have  any words of wisdom for me.
    Thanks Dunc

It is now generally acknowledged that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

If you're running or planning on running Lion the following will be of some interest to you:
In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For opening your domain file in Lion for the first time or to switch between multiple domain files  Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
Just launch the applicaiton, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain. This applicaiton can be use with earlier versions of the OS to select and open multiple domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • Started creating a web site using iWeb, signed up for MobileMe trial, now iWeb won't work?

So I started playing around with iWeb and created a web site for my portfolio. I then signed up for a trial of the MobileMe. After I went through the whole setup process for MobileMe...setting up on my iPod Touch, then on my iMac, then syncing all the apps...I back to iWeb to publish my web site to my newly created MobileMe account. Only iWeb was unresponsive. I tried to restart the application. I get as far as the welcome screen with the "Getting Started Video", but there is no iWeb window open behind that. I tried to restart my machine...nothing!
Now I have this MobileMe trial that is ticking away and I can't even use it. Please help, thanks.

Update. After a conversation with Marlon at Apple Support, we have it resolved. As soon as I mentioned that iWeb would launch properly on other profiles, we figured out that it has to be a preference problem. I should have known better, its one of the first things to check. But, I've been away from macs for a little bit, so I'm a little rusty in the troubleshooting dept.
    To trash iWeb preferences:
    1) Quit iWeb
    2) Navigate to:
    User Directory --> Library --> Preferences  --> com.apple.iWeb.plist
    3) Take this file and drag it to your desktop
    4) Relaunch iWeb
    5) If everything works as it should, you can take the preference file you dragged to your desktop and move it to      the recycle bin.
Somewhere in the MobileMe registration and setup process the preferences for iWeb froze up. Trashing the iWeb preferences fixed the problem.
If I come across any issues posting site to MM or posting site updates to MM I will update this thread.

  • TS3408 I have created a web site using iWeb. It has been running fine. I have made some changes to the site and it won't show the updates in Safari, but does show the changes in Firefox

I have created a website using iWeb. It has been running fine, with no problems at all.
I have recently made some changes and the updates don't show in Safari, but when I open Firefox, the changes are there. It doesn't show the updates in Chrome on my iphone either? Any suggestions?

*Press and hold Shift and left-click the Reload button.
    *Press "Ctrl + F5" or press "Ctrl + Shift + R" (Windows,Linux)

  • How do I create a web site using already .doc files?  More words than photo

I really want not to write everything on the iweb 08 format, but select, copy and edit my documents already written in .doc, or text, or ppt.
How do I do this? And, is it possible to edit them when they are in the iweb page?
    Thanks,
    María Cristina

You've posted this question in the iWeb 09 forum, but the same answer will work for both versions.
All you need to do is to choose which template type meets your needs and then copy/paste the text from your .doc or whatever document, into a text field on the page.
I would open the word documents with a text editor like Textwrangler so that all of the hidden Microsoft formatting data (font and paragraph info) is removed from the text. After pasting the text into the iWeb text box I'd change the font to one of the Web fonts for compatibility.
All of the text on an iWeb page remains editable for future changes.

  • Publishing a particular Web site using iWeb when you have 2 iWeb projects

Hi ! I'm a new mac user. Working with iWeb is great. I have 2 web projects. How can I upload or publish 1 of the sites without both of them being uploaded ? Every time I have tried to upload on .Mac, both sites are being uploaded but I only want one of them (the smallest one) to be uploaded. Thanks for the help !

    goony goo goo,
It can be done, but you need to jump through a few hoops to make it happen. Read through these notes on separate sites, held in individual Domain.sites files in iWeb.

  • How to Display a complete Web Site ?

hi , I need to know how to display a complete web site using Directly from DMM or DMP ?
anyhow i dont want any dynamic updates, but i need to display the whole page with flash and picture contents ..
    Please guide me
    thanks

This particular problem has been reported at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=622472 I have just voted for that bug.
Since my last report one month ago above, I have found the "Report Broken Website" appears under the Help menu item, is clickable when a webpage is displayed, but just endlessly displays a "Sending Report to server" dialog. It has never worked for me since several weeks ago. The moving blue bar under "Sending Report" just keeps moving but nothing happens.
Mozilla Firefox 3.6.13 , the latest version according to Check Updates. Windows Vista Home Premium.
    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101203 Firefox/3.6.13 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729)
Expected behaviour: I guess the Report menu item should be grayed out or invisible until the reporting mechanism works.
There are a few other related problems with reporting broken websites here:

  • Editing a web site using windows that was made with iweb using a MAC

I published my web site using iweb with my MBP, but at times would like to edit it when I'm running windows. Anyone know how to do it?

You can't. To edit a site created by iweb, you must be using a mac with iweb installed and also with the Domain file installed that was used to create the site.
    http://homepage.mac.com/thgewecke/iwebdata.html
Of course you can mess with the html and other files created by iWeb with any app you please, but any changes will be overwritten if you republish from iWeb later.

How can I change my web page using iweb?

Then you would need to publish to one of the 3 options that iWeb provides. Now, MobileMe ceases to exist come June, 30th. If you do not allready have a 3rd party host you will need to get one.
I use ix webhosting. Their plans start as low as $3.95 USD a month & they have excellant customer service.

  • Can I launch more than 5 web-sites using Muse? how?

    Hi,
Can I launch more than 5 web-sites using Muse? how?

You can use Muse to design and build as many websites as you wish; just purchase the URL's and hosting as appropriate. Your subscription to Muse allows for unlimited authoring.
Now, if you're referring to support via Business Catalyst, that's a different story...

  • How can I see Web sites using Adobe Flash Player with my IPad?

I've realised that it's not possible to visit web sites using Adobe Flash Player.
Is There a program by which Apple allows you to solve this problem?

Not from Apple, no, and probably never will be. You can try one of the third-party app/service combinations for playing Flash such as Skyfire , Puffin, or iSwifter. One of those might work for you, though they all have limitations and do not work with all Flash-based sites and services. You may find other suggestions for apps in the many other threads on Flash in this forum.

  • Creating multiple web sites for separate domain names

Is it possible to create a different web site using a different web address in IWeb 06? A friend asked me to make a web site for them....can/how do I publish it to a different address?
    Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The best way is to have a separate domain name for each site you want to manage. When you publish the sites each will have a separate URL. It will be:
    http://web.mac.com/your .Mac account name/the site folder name/index.html
I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.
