How best to rip and redo a DVD

This feels like something which should be obvious, but it seems is not so easy. I want to rip a DVD and then make a new DVD using only certain chapters. Thing is, I want the new DVD to look every bit as good as the original. This seems to be the big issue because many utilities will rip a DVD, but the resulting rip is noticeably inferior quality. I think it might be because it is assumed that the user wants to rip in order to watch on a computer or Iphone. That's not what I want.
Any tips about what apps to use and what settings would be most appreciated.
Thanks

You don't need to rip the entire disk. MPEG Streamclip will let you set in and out points with I & O keys, just as in Final Cut Pro. You will just need to skim through each VOB to find the bits that you want.
Because these are MPEG 2, Long GOP files, you will not be able to mark I & O frame accurately. Give yourself a second or so more material in front and behind. You can trim them after they have been converted in your editing software.
Right. I also have Mac the Ripper. It also rips to a VOB, but only a single VOB with both sound and picture. MPEG Streamclip gives me two seperate files of audio and video which Toast doesn't like. Only thing is, Mac the Ripper doesn't allow the use of in and out points, so I have to take the whole chapter. Not the end of the world. Is there any difference using either of these apps for this? Thanks.

  • In my Thunderbd 24.4.0-Windows7-how can I copy and save to DVD all the emails? Unlike in previous Thundrbd they no longer come up in Defaults under Mail.

In my win XP, after Profiles to Default with all those numbers, then Mail, up came Local Folders which contained all the current emails, which were then easily open-able and save-able.
How can I now do the same with my newer thunderbird on my windows 7?
    Thank you

Thank you - I now can find the Mail folder, and then only when I select : pop3.virginmedia-1.com (my server) from it's 3 choices, does it show all my email folders. They are all in 2 versions. Those ending .msf I cannot open as they are "not a valid Win 32 application". The others with a little page icon, do all open - in Wordpad or Libreoffice, but the messages are almost totally lost amongst dozens of complex data pages before and after each little actual message! How can I open and see just the actual email messages without all the vast other data, so that I can then save them to a DVD?

  • How do I open and save a DVD as movie file?

I have a DVD with video content that I want to eventually get "in" to iMovie for editing.
I can open and play with iDVD.
I need to save it as a movie file so that I can hopefully import it to iPhoto - and eventually open and edit with iMovie.
How do I save it as a movie file? When I tried QuickTime it wasn't able to open it either.
    Thanks,
    Kathy

Did you load the MPEG2 Playback Component?
If you open your DVD in the Finder, you should find a folder called Video_TS. In this folder, you should see several files with the extension .VOB. Drag one of these files into MPEG Streamclip and you should be able to play it. If you get that far, we'll keep going.
AIC is Apple Intermediate Codec. It is a high quality codec good for editing. DV is the codec used by MiniDV camcorders. You can pick these in MPEG Streamclip by selecting FILE/EXPORT TO QUICKTIME/AIC or FILE/EXPORT TO DV
There are other solutions, but this is the best one if you want to preserve the quality of your files before editing.

  • How best to copy to cd or dvd for viewing on tv as slide show

want to view photos on tv using cd or dvd - as a slide show - what is best way to do the task?

Easiest way to make a copy of a bootable CD/DVD (assuming you have an optical device that can burn CD/DVDs) is to pop in the disk, launch Disk Utility, select the volume, select File->New->Disk Image from diskXsY, and in the dialog box that pops up, select CD/DVD Master under Image Format and Encryption->None. Once it's finished, eject the CD/DVD, select the image in Disk Utility, and Images->Burn, pop in the blank, and that should do it. Details in Disk Utility->Help->Disk Utility Help->Duplicating a CD or DVD.
The master image format is required for bootable disks.

If for another iPhoto user or for back up purposes then select the Albums and go Share -> Burn
If for use on a WIndows Machine or for someone who doesn't use iPhoto, then export the Albums to folders on the desktop and burn those with the Finder.

  • How best to save VHS tapes to DVDs using a Mac ?

I have over 30 VHS tapes, eight Hi-8 tapes, and a player for both formats.   Would like to make DVDs of these movies.   There are a few USB adapters (Elgato Video Capture for $100, KWorld DVD Maker 2x for $28)  and Roxio makes Easy VHS to DVD 3 Plus for $60.  Have looked through AV forums on other websites and the directions are not concise, and are aimed at the PC platform.   Prefer to use a Mac.
What is the fastest, easiest, and best way to save these VHS tapes to DVDs using a Mac ?

    Frank Caggiano wrote:
Are you sure neither player has a digital output? FireWire would be the most likely connector on that type of equipment.
Both VHS & Hi-8 are analog tape formats so it is extremely unlikely that VHS players or Hi-8 camcorders would have built-in analog to digital converters. That's why you need a product that includes a hardware A-D converter like the three mentioned by the OP.
Roxio's Easy VHS to DVD 3 product is for Windows -- there is no software compatible with OS X included. The Easy VHS to DVD for Mac product does include OS X compatible software but it gets poor reviews at Amazon, has apparently not been updated in some time, & the support page for the product has some "page not found" links suggesting Roxio isn't currently supporting the product very well.
The KWorld DVD Maker comes with a software driver for its A-D converter, which apparently uses a Empia 28xx family chipset. According to this that driver will not work with recent OS X versions, but for $30 one can purchase the VideoGlide driver to solve that problem. The KWorld product does not include OS X compatible editing software; for that you use iMovie (& presumably Toast or iDVD or something else) to burn the movies to DVDs. That makes the price about the same as the Roxio solution but complicates support because hardware & software are coming from different companies.
The Elgato Video Capture product should be compatible with most OS X versions (but I could not find anything specifically about at beyond the typical "10.5 & above" kind of comment which may or may not mean it supports 10.8 or 10.9) but it captures to H.264/MPEG formats only, so like the KWorld you still need something to convert that to MPEG 2 to burn the captures to a standard DVD.
So basically, there is no easy "one step" method to transfer VHS (or any of the other analog video formats) to DVD's. Depending on the version of OS X in use, it should be fairly easy to convert the analog source material to a digital format that can be used with iTunes, iMovie, etc., but editing it & particularly burning that to a DVD that will play in a regular DVD player will take more work.

  • How do I play and then copy DVD movie to mac for film editing

I have just come home with my new mac book pro.  As recomended by the reseller I have connected an external  slim portable DVD writer/reader so that I can view, ...DVD's.  I am unable to view or copy the file contacts to the mac so that I can then later open the file in imovie for editing and clipping.

You need to use a video encoder such as Handbrake (Free)
    https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/12987/handbrake
    or
    iFFMpeg - Shareware ($20.40)

Once encoded you can edit using Final Cut or iMovie

  • How best to Convert, and edit video tape to digital

I want to convert, and edit VHS and Betamax video tapes to digital. My research indicates that there are a number of ways to achieve this, including:
    1. A video recorder with a hard disk and DVR (Which?)
    2. The "pass through" feature on a MiniDV camcorder (Discussion Sites)
    3. EyeTV 250 Plus (Magazine)
    4. Canopus' (ADVC300), which “cleans and stabilises analogue video before conversion so the digital is a higher quality than the original analogue” (Magazine and Discussion Sites)
Some claim that an S-video connection is essential for best results.
Can an expert advise the best solution?

I have a Canopus ADVC-300 that I use when digitizing VHS and Hi8 material.
It works quite well. The included software allows you to adjust the quality of the image as it is being converted.
Connect the tape deck to the ADVC-300 using SVHS cable and an audio RCA cable then firewire between the ADVC-300 and your mac. Turn on everything and launch iMovie to capture the playing video stream.
If you have technical questions regarding iMovie and or iDVD, each has a specific forum here on the Apple Discussions site.
    Good luck,

  • How do I rip a DVD to put on my website?

Okay, I have an 18 minute short film on a DVD that I want to put on my website. I want it to be the biggest size and best quality it can be without taking too long to load.
    1) How do I rip it off the DVD into a format that I can import into iMovie or the media gallery?
    2) How do I change the size of the file so that it won't take too long to load?
    3) Is there a way to put a ripped file into the media gallery and bypass iMovie? How would I do this?
Your help is greatly appreciated!! Thank you!

I have an 18 minute short film on a DVD that I want to put on my website.
Is this a home DVD or commercial? If commercial, then request an unprotected copy when you seek written permission for use.
I want it to be the biggest size and best quality it can be without taking too long to load.
Since these are mutually exclusive propositions, please specify minimum acceptable display dimensions and quality requirements.
    1) How do I rip it off the DVD into a format that I can import into iMovie or the media gallery?
It should not be necessary to "rip" but merely copy and/or convert the source file if this is being done legally. iMovie '08 will accept, edit, and export DV, AIC, M-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, and standard/non-proprietary MPEG-4 or H.264 files. It will also accept and edit but not export Apple Animation and Apple Video compressed files. The default compression format for Gallery videos is H.264/AAC in the M4V file container.
    2) How do I change the size of the file so that it won't take too long to load?
You reduce the total data used to compress the file. Unfortunately, this also reduces the quality unless you also reduce the data rate requirements by reducing the dimensions and/or use a more efficient compression format.
    3) Is there a way to put a ripped file into the media gallery and bypass iMovie?
Yes and no. Yes in the sense that you can manually "replace" a Gallery file with another file of the same name but no in the sense that iMovie '08 must have previously created/published the movie that you replace. (Or so some contributors have stated.)

Hi, Can anyone recommended software to import dvd to iMovies. I need to import about a dozen homemade DVD's and edit them into a single DVD comprising the 'best bits'. How best can I do this. I have an external hard drive available for the job

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
If you are running Lion or later:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion onwards, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. (The same applies to Mountain Lion even though that has it preinstalled.) You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • How is best to rip DVDs that I own to my iMac then move them to my iPads so my kids can watch them during a long drive?

How is best to rip DVDs that I own to my new iMac for viewing on my iPads and iPods (for kids during a long drive)? I've read about a lot of options, but I don't find anything that sounds authoritative on what is the ideal way. There is freeware out there and a bunch of paid options. I don't mind paying as long as I know what I'm getting will work. I've asked a few buddies and haven't gotten any straight answers. It seems like everyone has their own way that has its own set of benefits and issues. Any strong opinions out there on what works well (especially for a rookie)?

Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
The backing up part isn't illegal, but in order to do this you need to break copy protection..this part is.

Thanks! But when I visit the site recently, I found the program was upgraded. Now it has 2 optimized output formats specially made for iPod 30G and 60G players! Thus it is easier and more convenient to use without complex settings as other software. Try it at http://www.imtoo.com/downloads/dvd-to-ipod.converter.exe
Another good news: there was a new discount suite ImTOO DVD to iPod Suitethat contains both the DVD to iPod Converter and iPod Movie Converter. It saves newly $20! Hope this can do some help
