How best to setup a Mac Pro with two hard drives for 1st hard drive or OS failure?

My first Apple, a Mac Pro,  is to arrive on Monday (1/7).  I will be putting Win7 on Bootcamp and installing Parrallels.  It will have two 1T hard drives.   I would appreciate
any advice on how best to set it up for best recovery in case of a hard drive or OS crash.   You can tell I have experience with Windows.    It looks like my best choices are
either disk cloning software or just installing OS X from the recovery disk  on the second drive.   Apple says it is legal to do another installation.   I know the disk cloning will not work on the bootcamp partition which I plan to use for the Parallels program.  Can OS X have an option to boot from two differnet disks and OS installs?
What I am really wanting to do in the event of a crash,  is to just boot up on the other disk and keep working.     I try to keep data on a separate partition  with backups so
that a disk or OS crash doesn't cause any data loss.

I do not use windows.
However on my Mac Pro for cloning/backups/bootable backups i use Carbon Copy Cloner.
It has an ability to clone entire disk (unless specified differently) so I can boot from another disk or restore back if I want to.

I have a Mac Pro with four hard drives. I currently have Lion installed on one hard drive. I want to have the option to boot from either Lion or Snow Leopard. How can I do this?

It's best to install Snow Leopard on one of the three remain drives without an Operating System.
You can then install the applications you need from the original media. Create a User Account using Setup Assistant.
Do you want to migrate User Accounts from the OSX LIon boot drive, or are you keeping the User Accounts separate?
Dual-booting just requires holding the option key during startup and selecting either Lion or Snow Leopard.

I need to keep Snow Leopard so that I can run some old softward.

If you are careful you can put at least two on one drive, having Recovery from Lion and Mountain Lion on their own drives though.
CCC can clone Lion Recovery - great for moving or backup.

  • Is it possible to upgrade the Mac Pro with SCSI/SAS drives?

Hi guys I am considering to move on to a Mac Pro from my old PC.
The Mac Pro enclosure is quite unique in its hard drive holders as no cables are used and all drives are connected with a plugin mechanism.
So I am curious if that will allow me to upgrade to a SCSI/SAS storage system which requires cable connections between drives and the SCSI/SAS card on the PCI-E slot. I dont know if this will be possible with the Mac Pro enclosure.
Has anyone tried to do this?
Btw is there any Ultra320 or SAS(preferably) interface card available for Mac OS X?

The connectors for SATA drives can be used with SAS drives. However, the controller needs to be SAS compatible. I have never installed a SAS drive in the Mac Pro bay to see what happens. If some one has a SAS drive and wants to try this I would be interested in the results.
My guess is that the Mac Pro would not see the drive.
Areca sells the Mac Pro PCIe bootable ARC-1680 SAS controller in several configurations. This controller allows the user to utilize SAS or SATA hard drives connected to the card. The ARC-1680x comes with two external mini SAS connectors that can support eight direct connect hard drives or up to 128 devices (in theory) when used with SAS expanders.
The ARC-1680LP has one internal mini SAS port and one external mini SAS port. I looked at the Mac Pro internal SATA connectors and they can unscrew from the frame but there is only about 1/2" of clearance in that area of the case. In addition, I would want the hot swap bays to still operate and I did not see an easy way to patch into the existing SATA connectors. It would be nice if the Mac Pro factory connectors used snap on SATA connector on the back of the backplane so that users could interface the 4 SATA bays with an internal PCie controller. However, its hard wired in the existing configuration. With the new Mac Pro PCIe RAID 5 card on the market there must be alternative connectors that allow this type of installation to work properly.
Based on the ease at which the Areca SAS controller can be added as an external using the ARC-1680x I went with that option. I am using it with eight direct connect SATA hard drives now. I plan to expand the storage by adding a SAS expander in the form of a hub or an enclosure with SAS capabilities. I have been looking at a 16 bay SAS enclosure but I am not sure how loud it will be
Details on the ARC-1680 can be found here:
    http://www.areca.com.tw/products/pcietosas1680series.htm
Its very cool to have SAS or SATA capability along with a bootable card that can support tons of hard drives and RAID levels 0, 1,1E, 3, 5, 6, 10, 30, 50, 60 or JBOD . I booted the Mac Pro with a 2TB Mac OS X 10.4.10 RAID 6 volume and ran Xbench. It shows a 400MB/sec. hard drive setup and raises the overall Xbench score substantially.
While I doubt I will boot the Mac Pro from the RAID 6 volume much, it is very cool that that function is available. This is the only PCIe host adapter I have found with boot capabilities besides Apples new $999 4 port SATA internal card. SAS has lots of expansion capabilities. Users that want pretty much unlimited hard drive connectivity will enjoy the new ARC-1680x.
    Have fun!

  • RAID Setup on Mac Pro with OS X 10.5.2 Server Software

    Hello All,
Have Mac Pro Tower 2.66 GHZ with Leopard Server OS X 10.5.2 installed, all software up to date, 2 GB RAM and 3 Hard Drives, 250 GB with System and Users, 2 by 500 GB I want to set-up in RAID 1 Configuration to mirror the 250 GB Start-up Drive.
Have set-up the RAID successfully using Disk Utility a number of times but it does not replicate.
Read that I cannot set-up the RAID when started from the 250 GB Start-up, so started from OS X Leopard Installer DVD and set-up the RAID using Disk Utility again, restart Server from 250 GB Drive, does not replicate, 500 GB RAID 1 Array still says 465 GB available.
    What am I doing wrong?
Can someone post a step by step set-up for the RAID 1 Configuration I want to use please?

I you mirror the 250GB drive with one of the 500GB you will end up with a 250GB mirrored drive.
(You can't first mirror/RAID 1 the 2 500GB and expect the server to "understand" what to do?!)
You might better get another 250GB and mirror those two 250GB drives...
(And you can't partition a mirrored drive.)

  • CS4 and Mac Pro with two graphic cards: OpenGL not supported!

I have two graphic cards in my Mac Pro. If a use a dual display setup where both displays are connected to the same card, Photoshop enables OpenGL support (Preferences > Performance).
Switch both displays to the other card, also works fine.
BUT if I connect one display to the first card and the second display to the second card (so each display has its own graphic card) the Open GL support is greyed out (I can not longer use canvas display rotation for example)
This doesn't make sense to me and looks like a bug...

Are you running two of the same cards or are they different? I'm running a pair of NVidia 7300GTs with no issues...and I'm driving a pair of 30" Cinemas and an NEC 26" widescreen. I get better performance on the single 30" than on the card with the two displays. Also note that which PCI slot you are driving the cards in has an impact on their performance...something to look into.

  • Pros and cons to JBOD/N-RAID setup on MacBook Pro with two internal SSDs

First, to clarify, in this case, I mean the term "JBOD/N-RAID" to refer to a concatenated or spanning set of drives as supported by OS X and Disk Utility.
I've got an original Apple-installed 120GB 3G (3Gb/s) SSD which I'll be moving into the optical bay using an OWC "Data Doubler" and swapping a new 240GB OWC Mercury Electra 6G (6Gb/s) SSD into the main drive bay.
My goal is to avoid having two separate volumes.
Understand that a RAID 0 array would essentially only perform as well as the slowest drive in the array (the 3G SSD in this case), if it would even work at all given the two drives are not identical in make and capacity.
I've read that a JBOD/N-RAID array isn't subject to the "same make and capacity" constraints. But how does this setup perform?
Would the speed of the 6G be hobbled, slowed down to the 3G's speed (or worse?), if I were to set up the two SSDs as a JBOD/N-RAID array?
Is this even a recommended idea - that is, paying for the convenience of having one virtual volume by adding the complexity (and risks?) of a JBOD / N-RAID setup?

I am following your advice and attempting to install Bonjour. I wasn't sure where to install it so I am following the VMWare Knowledge Base #1003814: Sharing a printer with a Windows virtual machine using Apple Bonjour.
I have copied it below to refer to because I've run into a problem.
    I have completed steps 1 a-d.
The Problem: Step 1 e. Click Printers. Printers is not shown under Removable Devices. When I try to Add Device (Printers) it says "New Devices cannot be added until the Virtual Machine is Shut Down and then Resumed." I have shut down the Virtual Machine alone, I've shut down AMware Fusion and I've shut down both Windows and Mac. Nothing has changed when I try and add Printers so I can do Step e.
I sure hope someone can help.
To configure a printer connected to your Mac for use with the Bonjour utility and a virtual machine in Fusion:
Configure your virtual machine for Bridged Networking and disable ThinPrint:
    Click Virtual Machine > Settings.
    Click Network (Adapter).
Enable Bridged Mode. In Fusion 5.x, select Autodetect under Bridge networking.
    Click Show All.
    Click Printers.
    Set printer sharing to Off.
    Click Close.
    Reboot the virtual machine.
Install Bonjour for Windows. Download and install Bonjour for Windows in the virtual machine. Bonjour is available from Apple at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL999.
Note: The preceding link was correct as of January 20, 2010. If you find the link is broken, provide feedback and a VMware employee will update the link.
Share the printer in Mac OS:
    Open System Preferences.
    Click Print and Fax.
Select the printer you want to share, and select Share this printer.
To configure the printer in the guest operating system with the Bonjour Utility:
    Double-click the Bonjour Printer Wizard.
    Click Next.
Under Shared printers select the printer you want to use.
    Click Next.
    Click Finish.

i am trying to load turbo tax and cant get it to install.  i have a mac air and a usb superdrive.

I have TurboTax 2012 and have done it.  First, plug the SuperDrive into your USB port.  Then insert the TurboTax CD into the drive.  You will see the TurboTax icon and a folder icon representing your application folder on your desktop.  SImply drag the TurboTax icon over on top of the folder icon (as the arrow represents), let the action complete, and you will be done installing TurboTax!
Finally, remember to eject the TurboTax disk from the SuperDrive before unplugging the drive from your USB port.  Depending on how you have Finder set up, you may have to hunt for the drive's icon.  It may be in Finder's sidebar.

It depends on what they are. Generally, a Mac OS X application will have a distinctive icon; if they’re all documents(not Windows applications), double-click all of them.

  • Connecting Mac Pro to two (2) PCs for a print server

I would like to be able to use a PC with windows xp on it as a print server. I can get the mac's print to flash on the print server's screen, but as soon as that happens the printer dialog is stopped. What am I missing?

    Yes. It is possible.
I have it at work. Internal video media and internal company LAN.
One is at 192.x.x.x. the other at company range.
Also used on XSAN for external and internal metadata. That is why there are 2 NIC's.

  • Itunes library sharing on single Mac Pro with 2 users.

Recently I have setup a Mac Pro with 2 users. Primarily the thought was to have this as the media server for a couple of AppleTV (2nd generation) and other users. The primary user on the Mac Pro (me), has the iTunes Library located in the Public Directory. Home sharing is enabled, on all systems. There is no problem when the Primary user is logged in and iTunes is running. When the second user, logs into the Mac Pro, nobody has access to the iTunes Library of the primary user.
I was thinking of setting up the secondary user with the same itunes directory, but when new content is added by the primary user, the secondary user would not see it automatically, would they?
Basically I am trying to set up a common iTunes library for all users and all devices. Is it possible

while logged in to the other user account, launch iTunes while holding the option (⌥) key, click on choose library when prompted, and select the iTunes folder in the shared folder.
if you're using fast user switching, user A must quit iTunes before user B can access the library.
Home sharing is enabled, on all systems.
home sharing is designed to work between two (or more) computers on the the same LAN.

  • Mac Pro with Western Digital VelociRaptor 600G ?

    Hello people,
Has anyone tried upgrading the HDDs in the Mac Pros with the new drive from WD
    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=821
From what i see, as the last model, this will probably not fit natively due to a lower pin arrangement that will not match the Mac Pro SATA slots with the factory HDD sleds. Am i wrong?
If you have this drive how does it compare?
    Thanks

    Hi-
That drive of this following model is plug and play in the MP:

A pair of them in a striped RAID are as fast as the fastest SSD.
October 5th, 2010 -- For less that the price of one 256G SSD, you can buy two 10K 600G Velociraptor HDDs. If you stripe them (RAID 0), you get the same sustained transfer speed as the SSD. But, alas, the SSD can process 14 times as many small random transfer requests per second. Then again, considering you are getting 5 times the storage of the SSD and 3 times the transactions per second of the fastest 7K HDD, it's is an interesting option for a boot volume.
