Hi,
A BAPI is a method of a SAP Business Object. BAPI enables SAP and third party applications to interact and integrate
with each other at the Business Object / Process level.
Check this link to know more about BAPI.
http://www.sapgenie.com/abap/bapi/example.htm
http://sappoint.com/abap/
Batch Data Communication (BDC) is the oldest batch interfacing technique that SAP provided since the early versions of R/3. BDC is not a
typical integration tool, in the sense that, it can be only be used for uploading data into R/3 and so it is not bi-directional.
BDC works on the principle of simulating user input for transactional screen, via an ABAP program. Typically the input comes in the form
of a flat file. The ABAP program reads this file and formats the input data screen by screen into an internal table (BDCDATA). The
transaction is then started using this internal table as the input and executed in the background.
In ?Call Transaction?, the transactions are triggered at the time of processing itself and so the ABAP program must do the error handling.
It can also be used for real-time interfaces and custom error handling & logging features. .
To know more about BDC,
check the link.

Main differences are...
In case of bdc data transfer takes place from flat file into sap system ie the file existing in sap system to sap sytem
where is bapi's r remotly enabled function modules which are assigned to some business objects n used to transfer the data between different business partners who are using different systems other than sap.
not only that...
when you plan to upgrade your system version then bdc willnot support those upgradations where as bapi's will support.

  • BAPI vs BDC

    hi all,
    we can upload data using BAPI as well as BDC?
    so when we should use which?
    what is the difference between them?

    Hi,
    BDC (Batch Data Communication) is a technology used for data transfer. it is meant for transferring data thru SAP transactions itself. when u use BDC for data transfer, the sequence of steps is the same as when u use standard sap transaction screens for data upload. the only difference is that u can use different options for foreground/background processing.
    BDC:
    Batch Data Communication (BDC) is the process of transferring data from one SAP System to another SAP system or from a non-SAP system to SAP System.
    Features :
    BDC is an automatic procedure.
    This method is used to transfer large amount of data that is available in electronic medium.
    BDC can be used primarily when installing the SAP system and when transferring data from a legacy system (external system).
    BDC uses normal transaction codes to transfer data.
    Types of BDC :
    CLASSICAL BATCH INPUT (Session Method)
    CALL TRANSACTION
    BATCH INPUT METHOD:
    This method is also called as ‘CLASSICAL METHOD’.
    Features:
    Asynchronous processing.
    Synchronous Processing in database update.
    Transfer data for more than one transaction.
    Batch input processing log will be generated.
    During processing, no transaction is started until the previous transaction has been written to the database.
    CALL TRANSACTION METHOD :
    This is another method to transfer data from the legacy system.
    Features:
    Synchronous processing. The system performs a database commit immediately before and after the CALL TRANSACTION USING statement.
    Updating the database can be either synchronous or asynchronous. The program specifies the update type.
    Transfer data for a single transaction.
    Transfers data for a sequence of dialog screens.
    No batch input processing log is generated.
    For BDC:

    BAPI
    BAPI stands for Business API(Application Program Interface).
    A BAPI is remotely enabled function module
    ie it can be invoked from remote programs like standalone JAVA programs, web interface etc..
    You can make your function module remotely enabled in attributes of Function module but
    A BAPI are standard SAP function modules provided by SAP for remote access.
    Also they are part of Businees Objest Repository(BOR).
    BAPI are RFC enabled function modules. the difference between RFc and BAPI are business objects.
    You create business objects and those are then registered in your BOR (Business Object Repository)
    which can be accessed outside the SAP system by using some other applications (Non-SAP) such as VB or JAVA.
    In this case u only specify the business object and its method from external system
    in BAPI there is no direct system call. while RFC are direct system call.
    Some BAPIs provide basic functions and can be used for most SAP business object types.
    These BAPIs should be implemented the same for all business object types.
    Standardized BAPIs are easier to use and prevent users having to deal with a number of different BAPIs.
    Whenever possible, a standardized BAPI must be used in preference to an individual BAPI.

  • What the advantages of having an BAPI over Other data migrations

    What the advantages of having an BAPI over Other data migrations

    Th advantages of BAPI
    1. Simple to use (its just an FM)
    2. Not cumbersome like bdc
    where we have to record each and every screen
    sequence.
    3. SAP guarantees the consistency
    of bapi in future releases.
    One of the big plusses for BAPIs is that the interface and function are not supposed to change. This is a big plus when you do upgrades or hot packs because the transaction can change (format, required inputs etc) which means you then need to update the call transaction.
    Some of the BAPIs are better documented and easier to use than others.
    You usually need to perform the BAPI that actually does the COMMIT after you call your BAPI.
    The Program coding for calling a BAPI is usually cleaner than setting up the screen flow etc for the Call Transaction.
    You don't need to worry about special data circumstances interrupting the normal data flow of the screens and causing errors because of that.
    BAPIs probably have better performance since they don't do the screen flow processing.
    In general if the BAPI exists for the transaction you want to perform and you can figure out how to use it the BAPI is probably the best way to go.
    This is just from my experience working with both BAPI and Call Transaction. I have had some very good successes with BAPIs, but very occasionally found that I could not get the BAPI to perform the update I needed.
    Refer the transaction BAPI for detail information.

    Standardized BAPIs are easier to use and prevent users having to deal with a number of different BAPIs.
    Whenever possible, a standardized BAPI must be used in preference to an individual BAPI.
    The following standardized BAPIs are provided:
    Reading instances of SAP business objects
    GetList ( ) With the BAPI GetList you can select a range of object key values,
    for example, company codes and material numbers.
    The BAPI GetList() is a class method.
    GetDetail() With the BAPI GetDetail() the details of an instance of a business object type are retrieved
    and returned to the calling program.
    The instance is identified via its key.
    The BAPI GetDetail() is an instance method.
    BAPIs that can create, change or delete instances of a business object type
    The following BAPIs of the same object type have to be programmed
    so that they can be called several times within one transaction.
    For example, if, after sales order 1 has been created, a second sales order 2 is created in the same transaction,
    the second BAPI call must not affect the consistency of the sales order 2.
    After completing the transaction with a COMMIT WORK, both the orders are saved consistently in the database.
    Create( ) and CreateFromData! ( )
    The BAPIs Create() and CreateFromData() create an instance of an SAP business object type,
    for example, a purchase order. These BAPIs are class methods.
    Change( )
    The BAPI Change() changes an existing instance of an SAP business object type,
    for example, a purchase order. The BAPI Change () is an instance method.
    Delete( ) and Undelete( ) The BAPI Delete() deletes an instance of an SAP business object type from the database
    or sets a deletion flag.
    The BAPI Undelete() removes a deletion flag. These BAPIs are instance methods.
    Cancel ( ) Unlike the BAPI Delete(), the BAPI Cancel() cancels an instance of a business object type.
    The instance to be cancelled remains in the database and an additional instance is created
    and this is the one that is actually canceled. The Cancel() BAPI is an instance method.
    Add<subobject> ( ) and Remove<subobject> ( ) The BAPI Add<subobject> adds a subobject to an existing object inst!
    ance and the BAPI and Remove<subobject> removes a subobject from an object instance.
    These BAPIs are instance methods.

    Java Connector(JCO) can call not only BAPI's but also the function modules which are remotely enabled..
    BAPI's as i said earlier are remotely enabled function modules..
    Hence, JCO can call also BAPI's(n not only BAPI's as u mentioned).
    Check the following BDC over BAPI
    The steps to be followed are :
    1. Find out the relevant BAPI (BAPI_SALESORDER_CHANGE for VA02).
    [for VA01 use BAPI_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT2]
    2. Create a Z program and call the BAPi (same as a Funtion module call).
    2. Now, if you see this BAPi, it has
    -> Importing structures.
    eg: SALESDOCUMENT: this will take the Sales order header data as input.
    -> Tables parameters:
    eg: ORDER_ITEM_IN: this will take the line item data as input.
    Note :
    Only specify fields that should be changed
    Select these fields by entering an X in the checkboxes
    Enter a U in the UPDATEFLAG field
    Always specify key fields when changing the data, including in the checkboxes
    The configuration is an exception here. If this needs to be changed, you need to complete it again fully.
    Maintain quantities and dates in the schedule line data
    Possible UPDATEFLAGS:
    U = change
    D = delete
    I = add
    Example
    1. Delete the whole order
    2. Delete order items
    3. Change the order
    4. Change the configuration
    Notes
    1. Minimum entry:
    You must enter the order number in the SALESDOCUMENT structure.
    You must always enter key fields for changes.
    You must always specify the update indicator in the ORDER_HEADER_INX.
    2. Commit control:
    The BAPI does not run a database Commit, which means that the application must trigger the Commit
    so that the changes are read to the database. To do this, use the BAPI_TRANSACTION_COMMIT BAPI.
    For further details... refer to the Function Module documentation for the BAPi.

  • How are BAPI's related to conversions

    Hi,
    I would like to know how can we do conversions using BAPI's. Is conversion through BAPI preferred over BDC or call transaction??
    Thanks,
    Haritha

    Hi Monica
    Well my requirement is :
    Hi
    Am using the LSMW to upload the data of internal orders(KO01) by BAPI... Business Object:BUS2075. Now the requirement is, location(stort) & plant is not mapping correctly with the bapi method. Hence am trying to create the orders first & then modify the internal orders based on location & plant by orders.
    The problems encountered are:
    a) how to find out orders created by user or is there any other way
    b) is there any function module exists for this.
    Please send the answers to [email protected]
    And moreover i didnt recieved the document... could you once send it to my id.
    Thanx
    Naveen.

  • Advantages of LSMW over BDC

    <b>What are the advantages of LSMW over BDC ? In which context we would be using LSMW ?</b>
    ( as per my idea ,LSMW doesnt require any coding and would be used by functional consultants.<b>Apart from this any other advantages of using LSMW ?</b> )

    Hi,
    Apart from the advantages that you mentined in your question,
    we can directly process LSMW with the help of IDOC BAPI through LSMW.
    And if we create 1 project in LSMW we can create multiple sub projects and in 1 sub project we create multiple objects.
    So by this facility we can use the Object and sub project with in the whole project.
    And in LSMW we have a very good facility like conversions fixed rules and constant maintaining facility.
    So LSMW is far better than using BDC programs.
    We have lot of facilities like Auto field mapping and many others .
    When we come to use it we know it better.

    I connect via ECC5 to R/3 4.6C.
    I need to enter data into an R/3 transaction.
    I wrote a BAPI that does a batch input (yes, it is a sin).
    The problem is that I get the error (actually dump from the R/3) - DYNPRO_SEND_IN_BACKGROUND.
    This is because I try to do a batch input on foreground while the system does it in the background.
    Does anyone have a nice idea how to get over this?
    Thanks,
    Itay

    Hi,
    I am not sure about this, but if you launch the Batch input using standard program RSBDCSUB, should it not be launched as a background process ?
    best regards,
    Guillaume

  • BAPI AND BDC

    How is BAPI different from call transaction or session

    BAPI is a SAP-supplied function module with a defined interface, which allows you to interact with various business objects. SAP guarantees the integrity of your database for anything updated using a BAPI.
    BAPI enables SAP and third party applications to interact and integrate with each other at the Business Object / Process level.
    Check this link to know more about BAPI.
    http://www.sapgenie.com/abap/bapi/example.htm
    http://sappoint.com/abap/
    BDC is a method of driving screens programatically, for updating SAP data.BDC is not a typical integration tool, in the sense that, it can be only be used for uploading data into R/3 and so it is not bi-directional.
    BDC works on the principle of simulating user input for transactional screen, via an ABAP program. Typically the input comes in the form of a flat file. The ABAP program reads this file and formats the input data screen by screen into an internal table (BDCDATA). The transaction is then started using this internal table as the input and executed in the background.
    It can also be used for real-time interfaces and custom error handling & logging features. .
    To know more about BDC,check the link.
    http://sappoint.com/abap/
    BAPI V/S BDC:
    SAP comes up with Change in Version, so each and every time they will change the screens/number etc.
    so you have to change your BDC programs accordingly.
    and also Most of the Latest versions transactions are Enjoy Transaction. They will not support BDC's in Background.
    But Using BAPI's No such disadvantages.

    My Verizon wireless service at my house has begun to degrade over the last 6 Month.  It has begun to be very frustrating seeing how we switched over from Satellite to Verizon 4GLTE wireless device.  How do I contact someone to see what the issue may be. Zip Code 22580.

    Out of curiosity how much data per month are you using?  Another factor could be if neighbors have all done the same thing as you and the node is being overloaded on home internet use.

  • Session Problems: "Don't know how to iterate over supplied "items""

    Hi, I am developing my first application using Struts and JSP. The Action Form loads an object called reportGrid into session and I am trying to display it on a JSP page. Displaying simple variables works fine, but I can display an object. The error I receive is: Don't know how to iterate over supplied "items"
    My object is made up of a group of ArrayLists looks similar to this this:
            private List affiliateID;
         private List affiliateName;
         private List product1;
         private List product2;
         //etc for about 10 listsThe object is filled with data from a result set and placed into session like:
         HttpSession session = request.getSession();
         session.setAttribute("grid", reportGrid);The goal is to display each list in its own column in a HTML table.
    <table>
    <tr>
    <c:forEach var="affiliateName" items="${grid}">
              <td>
                   <c:out value="${affiliateName}" />
              </td>
         </c:forEach>
         <c:forEach var="product1" items="${grid}">
              <td>
                   <c:out value="${product1}" />
              </td>
         </c:forEach>
         <c:forEach var="product2" items="${grid}">
              <td>
                   <c:out value="${product2}" />
              </td>
         </c:forEach>
    </tr>
    </table>I'm sure this has been asked before but I could not find any examples in the forums. I can place an ArrayList directly into session and iterate through using <c:forEach tags but when I try to do the same with an object it gives me the error " Don't know how to iterate over supplied "items" ".
    Does anyone have any examples of pulling and displaying an object in session which contains ArrayLists? I have been stuck on this same error for a while and any help will be greatly apreciated.
    James.

    What is the type of grid?

  • How to turn over camera-images?

    Except for photo's I can make short film-shoots with my Fuji Finepix camera. When I import the images in Iphoto, it's not possible to turn-over the video-file, different then photo's. When I play the movie in Iphoto, or in Imovie, the video remains in the wrong position. Does anybody knows how to turn over the video-file in the right position?

    Dear Smtr,
    Thank you for your answer. But how do I rotate video-clips in Iphoto? The rotate-button turns gray when a video-clip is selected. Of course I can check my software, but it would be easier to solve it in Iphoto.

    In STO Scenario, how to control the over delivery?
    I created a PO for the Intra Company stock transfer & Delivery created in the Background with the T Code VL10B. When I am doing picking using T code VL02N, the system is allowing to add  more than PO Quantity in batches and system displaying the warning message (Specified quantity is greater than the open quantity/Message no. Hence plz suggest how to restrict the same.
    Hope it is clear.

    I am also in the same boat.
    I searched the forum and got the link STO - How to control Over delivery ?
    I checked OSS notes 548914, 386340,215488 but to no avail.
    I suggested user exit USEREXIT_SAVE_DOCUMENT_PREPARE  in include MV50AFZ1 to my technical team for finding the resolution. So far it is still on hold.
    If you come across any other solution, you can update the forum so that it would be helpful for many others.
