How big a deal is the shared memory for video editing

Hi,
It looks like the portable Mac I have been waiting for has been released. The one thing that I am wondering about is the shared video? memory. How big a deal is it?
It looks like it should not be an issue with iMovie. How about FCE?
With the Macbook at $1,300 and the entry level MBP at $2,000, $700 is a lot to me- budget and otherwise- Especially since I will add a gig of ram, and the 3 year apple protection plan.

I use iMovie most of the time for around an hour project and went back and forth with iSlick FX, iTunes, garage band and iDVD, and I find my MAcBook serve me well (2.0 Ghz, 2 GB), and use external LCD for wider view editing area.
The chipset is actually allowed to use up to 224 mb of shared memory (with based 80 mb on os X) and the bigger matched memory you install, the more flexibility for that graphic chipset to allocate shared memory.
The only time my project getting choppy is when I select show waveform for entire clip in my project area. That is when the chipset is lack power to play it real time.
But if you are serious about getting editing and planning to upgrade to Final cut (express or pro) later, MacBook Pro is a better investment and bigger screen too.

That is personal taste and there is no discussing taste. However, from my perspective, and that is personal, I prefer 3840 x 1080 resolution with dual monitors over 1920 x 1080 with a single monitor, but that is because I very often have Firefox, Filezilla, Dreamweaver and some other applications open at the same time, switching between the Adobe forums, Gmail accounts, Notebook results from the PPBM5 data submissions, PPBM5 form submissions, MySQL access, phpadmin pages to update the database, the PPBM5 results pages and various DW .php pages for the maintenance of our database and switching back and forth between various versions of PR. I occasionally really run out of real estate with all these applications and could not consider a single monitor with only 1920 x 1080 resolution, even if it were a 105" screen. In the future I would even like to have a four monitor setup (with MPE hardware support) in a two by two configuration, so that I can freely move my application screens around.
If that happens, notice I say if and not when, my preference for a monitor would be something like 4 Samsung F2380 monitors. Small bezel, great display and panel, affordable.

Hello, pretty simple question, which of these 2 iMac configurations would be best suited for video editing? I want to use Final Cut Pro X and Adobe After Effects (not cutting edge effects just simple stuff).

For some reason Apple don't offer more than 1GB of dedicated video ram in anything but the maxed out 27inch. Personally, I’m not fussed about the bigger screen and I would say that having the faster processor, double the ram and a fusion drive would be more beneficial than the extra gig in the video card but I’m not 100% sure, what do you guys think?

If you do a significant amount of video editing the larger display is nice but not absolutely necessary. I’d also recommend an SSD or Fusion drive rather than the stock mechanical drive which really is dog slow. If you choose an SSD 8GB will be plenty though 16GB is better if you go with the smaller model.

How to pin sequences in the shared pool for RAC?

We have a RAC environment with two instances. I want to pin some sequences in the shared pool to boost the performance. Do I need to pin them in both of the instances or just pin them in one instance?

If you cannot tolerate gaps, you must not use sequences. Period. A sequence-generated key will have gaps because transactions roll back, because databases get shut down, etc. If you want to ensure that there are no gaps, you have to write code that serializes access to a resource (i.e. a custom table of sequences) over the full length of a transaction. Of course, this is hugely inefficient and kills the application's scalability, but it does prevent gaps. Sequences are much faster and much more scalable, but they do not and can not guarantee that there are no gaps.
Assuming the intention is to minimize gaps, rather than to eliminate them, NOCACHE & ORDER can help. That means, though, that you may need to communicate with the other nodes in the cluster every time you need a new value from the sequence, which is the slow part. Pinning the sequence is not going to be beneficial.

Reaching out to everyone and anyone to help with this. Has anyone had any luck (in British Columbia) dealing with PST Exemption for Youth product? More specifically if a product has a full tax item (12%) and a Youth Exempt Item (5%) in the cart, at the same time.
As you know, if you add to British Columbia Tax Codes (BC-12% and BC-5%) and you have product in your cart, like the above mentioned - the Destination State overrides any product level Tax Codes.
Looking for some help with this one.

Computer for Video Editing for the Present and Beyond

In an earlier post I announced that I have been a Premiere Elements user since Day One, and I also mentioned I was looking to have a new computer built from scratch rather than purchase from Dell or HP. I am close to finalizing that build, and am looking forward to upgrading to Elements 8.0. I am also looking forward to becoming a subscriber to Muvipix.com. Becoming a part of the Adobe Premiere Elements Forum coupled with being an eventual subscriber to Muvipix.com has elevated my enthusiasm for video editing. Special Thanks go to Bill Hunt and Steve Grisetti for anchoring this Adobe Pre E Forum. Your advice has motivated me to take my video editing with Premiere Elements to another level.
Speaking of advice, what does everyone think of the following specifications for my new computer? Is this a solid computer for video editing? I do not have $$ or space to have 2 computers, so my single computer is for day to day work, and video editing as a hobbyist... which of course is not "ideal" for video editing... but I don't make $$ at this, so I use what I have

I have a mackbook pro and an iMac if I buy a time capsule 2tb airport, I can use it with time machine and what would be the best way to use it.
There is no particular setup required for TM.. both computers will create their own backup sparsebundle which is like a virtual disk.. Pondini explains the whole thing if you read the reference I gave you.

Up to you.. you can plug the external drive into the TC and enjoy really slow file transfers or you can plug it into your computer and use it as external drive.. which is faster than the TC.. and TM can include it in the backup.

If I understand you correctly, you are asking how to resize your partitions for MacOS and Windows (Boot Camp) you don't want to reboot the computer to do it. If that is correct, then I don't know of any way for you to do what you want. In order to resize the partitions, you will need to reboot the OS that is running from the partitions, preferably exit the OS, resize the partitions, then restart the OS, so it has a clean view of the disk.
