How big a difference will 2 gigs of RAM make compared to 1?

I'm definitely upgrading my MacBook to at least a gig of RAM when I get it, but I am thinking about upgrading to 2. Unfortunately, even after-market RAM is rather expensive in 1GB modules.
My question is: Will I see any major differences in performance between the 1 and 2 gigs of RAM while playing games with similar requirements to Apple's "Intermediate Gaming" games such as UT2004?
What about a scenario of running iTunes, several web pages in your favorite web browser, some sort of filesharing app, one or two IM clients (Adium and Skype/Gizmo), and the odd number of little background apps? How about on Leopard, or even on <insert name of cat to be 10.6>?
Sorry about the pummeling of questions :P

Elispiro,
Normally, I recommend 1.5 GBs for any Mac that will be "put through its paces," as gaming does. Having this amount of RAM allows for plenty of "Inactive" physical memory, which is the figure that provides a big speed boost.
You see, having enough RAM to avoid excessive "swaps" while you are using your applications provides speed boost #1. This is the most important reason to upgrade RAM, and it happens at around 1 GB. Speed boost #2 will be delivered by having a bit more than this 1 GB threshhold, through the use and maintainance of a large amount of "Inactive" memory. This memory contains code and data for applications that have quit, but might be launched again in the near future, thus speeding the availability of these applications to a great degree. 1.5 GBs of RAM provides this boost in most circumstances.
As I say, this is what I normally recommend. For owners of the new Macbooks (and Macbook Pros), however, there is another consideration. If you install memory in "matching pairs" of RAM modules, the RAM bus on the new machines will operate in "Dual-Channel" mode. This mode allows the DIMMs to be accessed simultaneously, on the same clock cycle, thereby increasing the total memory throughput.
For the Macbook Pros, this is a minor speed boost. On the Macbooks, though, it is reported that this small boost really helps with the "integrated" graphics. Since the integrated graphics processor must share main memory, this Dual-Channel mode becomes very important. Especially true of you want to play any games
So for you, I recommend going directly to 2 GBs. This is the only configuration that will give you every posssible speed boost that additional RAM will provide. It need not be as expensive as you might be thinking. a 2 GB "kit" for your Macbook is less than $200 US on this website. I'm don't know the ramifications of purchasing/shipping from Canada, but I wouldn't think it would be a problem.

  • How big an audiobook will it hold?

I wanted to download an audio book for my 1st generation shuffle (500mb) and wonder how big a book I can download. As far as I can see iTunes only indicates the length of the audio book not the size. I assume if I can't fit the entire audiobook on the shuffle then I can't break it into sections either.
Is there a way to search short books or size criteria?
    Thanks,

It doesn't show the size in the store, but it will in iTunes.
Books are recorded at a lower bit-rate, and I can't imagine one being so large as not to fit on the Shuffle.

  • Will 8 gig of ram fit my computer

I have a early 2009 imac and Ive tried to upgrade from 2 gig of ram to 8 gig and I get 3 beeps indicating trouble with the ram.  I have identified that both 4 gig are working because if I install them with the 1 gig it works perfectly.  If I switch the 4 for 4 it also works perfectly.  When I add the two 4's together I get the 3 beeps

I went to crucial .com and saw what they reccomended.  It was similiar but not exact.
If it was not the exact same thing, I would return both to the store and order from either OWC or Crucial as both guarantee their RAM to work with the model they recommend for it. I've checked the specs on early 2009 iMacs and they will accept 8 GB, so since it is better to have matching modules, I'd return both and order a set from a place that guarantees it to work and has a lifetime warranty.

  • How big a difference is there between 1GB and 2GB of RAM?

    Hi everyone,
I am currently running 1GB of RAM on my MacBook. How much difference in speed/performance would I see if I were to upgrade to 2GB? I spend most of my time in Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop CS, Canon EOS Utility (Using my computer to control my camera in studio situations), and just the regular iTunes, Safari stuff.
If It makes any difference, I do run an external display in extended desktop mode off of my MacBook.
This is the RAM I'm thinking of purchasing:

    Thanks for any input.

I went from 1.25 gb to 2 gb and it works much better. Everything runs much smoother. I honestly can't say I noticed a difference in speed but I can have more windows open. I also use and external monitor and I MLB.TV on it while I am working on my main display. Never a glitch with the video. I use Photoshop CS3 and it works well.
The ram you chose looks good. I ordered Crucial RAM from NewEgg and like it.
Here are some benchmark test that will show the differences in RAM.

  • How much difference will more memory make with Logic?

I'm running Logic 6 on an iBook G4 with 1.33 ghz and 768 meg of ram. I can max out at 1.5 gig of ram. What difference will this make? I'm also going to upgrade to Logic 7 soon. I'm going to wait a while before I get an INTEL Mac since most of my plugs have no updates available yet (Sampletank, Amplitube, and T-Racks mastering). I figure in a year, INTELS will be much more common. Please share thoughts. I run all the audio files from a 7200 Mercury Firewire drive. I figure before my iBook is outdated beyond use I can upgrade memory and eventually have a newer/faster HD installed (There's a few places that will install new HD, transfer data and have everything back to you in 24 hours).

Adding memory will only make a truly big difference if you're currently low enough that the system resorts to using virtual memory paging. Load up a typical song in Logic, then start Activity Monitor. On the System Memory display, observe the number for 'page outs'. If it rarely or never increases while you're running Logic, adding memory won't make a huge difference. If 'page outs' is constantly growing, more memory will be dramatically improve the overall behavior of the system.
Ignore 'page ins', it's not relevant.
Note: those places that do 24 hour turnaround (via express shipping) for a drive replacement charge quite a premium for the service. I'd say you're better off doing as little as possible to the current system, and saving the money for the next one. Just my opinion, of course.

  • Do not know how big or small items in image will be after being printed out

I have just started using photoshop to develop some designs that are meant to be printed on fabric. And then sewn into dresses
While I know how to change the size and scale of the image and canvas. I can not tell how big or small the objects or different elements in the pattern will be when printed out.
For example if I want to have a certain part of the pattern appear on the shoulder of a dress and another on the hem, how do I ensure that they are printed at the right size and in the right place.
I tried printing out one pattern on a meter of fabric and it turn out that it was too big and most of the design will be cut in the process of making the dress. I have no way to determine the dimensions.
Is there a way where I can place a dress outline over an image to check it out or size the individual items inside?
    Thank you

can place a dress outline over an image to check it out or size the individual items inside?
Do you have the cut in digital form (vector or pixels)?

  • How much difference will I notice between 2011 and 2013 MBA, fully upgraded?

I'm considering upgrading. I have a 2011 13 inch MBA, fully upgraded. So:
    * 256 GB SSD
    * 4 GB RAM
    * 1.8 Ghz core i7
I'd get the 2013 13 inch with 512 GB, 8 GB ram and 1.7 GHz i7. I don't need the battery life, I'd be upgrading because I've noticed a few choke points on my current machine:
    * Sometimes tabs will lag when opening (despite very fast internet)
    * Fan is loud
    * Computer runs hot in summer months
    * Occasional system lag or lag on specific programs like Pages when I have large files open
    * General slowness that happens sometimes.
Will any or all of those issues be reduced with the increase in RAM or other system wide increases?

It's hard to say just how much improvement it will make on the examples you gave, because there is no indicator of how much resources are being consumed by open and running apps.
Will you notice a difference... Probably. A HUGE difference, likely not, unless the memory resources are a limiting factor already on you machine.
I have a 2010, a 2011, and a 2012 MacBook Air. The difference between the 2010 and the 2013's speed is only slightly evident on 75% of my usage. The other 25%, the diffrence is more pronouced (when doing long duration tasks like video and photo editing).
You may want to upgrade this time around, especially with your memory possibly being a factor. I however, am sitting out this one cycle. (unless I fall of the wagon)

  • How big of a hard drive for 15" G4 667

    I have a 15" G4 667 and it has a 30gb... how big of a hard drive can i install in it... i would like to install a 160gb

Hi, letmeno. If your 667MHz Powerbook has a DVI video-out port, it will format a nominal 160GB drive to its actual capacity (about 149GB) and use it happily, without any other limitations.
If you have the 667MHz model with a VGA video-out port, only 127-128GB of a 160GB drive can be recognized in it, and the last 20GB of the drive's actual capacity will be unavailable. Partitioning the drive has no effect on this hardware limitation.
A 120GB drive (the next size down) has a formatted capacity in any machine of about 111GB, so a 160GB drive actually provides a significant increase even in a Powerbook that can't use the whole drive. If you have the VGA model, and the difference between 111GB and 128GB is worth the difference in price between a 120 and a 160GB drive to you, go ahead and install a 160. Otherwise, even a 120 would certainly be a huge improvement over a 30.
If you do buy a 160, any later Powerbook or other recent Mac model will be able to reformat it to its full capacity. Whenever you move on to a newer Mac, you can just mount the 160 in an external enclosure for continued use, put the 30 back into the Tibook, and sell it or give it away.

  • How big of a hardrive can i use in my gigabit ethernet g4 dual 500.

    Hi there.
I wanted to now how big of a hard drive can i use in my gigabit ethernet g4 powerpc with a dual 500 processor . at the present time i have one 80 and one 20 gig drive in there now.
So my answer is how big of a drive can i use before i have problems with seting it up. Like i want to use a 500 gig drive in my computer and my old 80 gig too. i want to buy a apple tv and store my dvds on the big 500 hardrive so i have alot of room for the vidio files, for apple t.v . If i can use one as big as one terabite you now the real big one that would be fine. The more room i have the better for me. I will be able to watch the movies i downloaded from the internet and i wont have to burn them at all.
This is of corse if apple tv will handle it.

    Hi-
If you need that much storage, and you'll have to buy a controller anyhow, get a SATA controller card, and put one or two 500gb SATA drives in. The enterprise class of SATA drives are made especially for multi media storage, have excellent seek times and fast data transfer rates. A "bargain" on a package can be had at OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/SATAM500GPCI/
    or
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/SATAM10TBPCI/
The MaxLine Pro drives have great characteristics, and are reviewed favorably.
I have an OWC SATA card, and the card works perfectly, and is cheaper than other makers cards of equivalent specs.

  • How big of a file can I receive?

Not sure if there is an error or if the file is too big.  My other email provider will allow an email with several pictures attached to be received.  When I forwarded it - it failed.  Then when the sender sent it to my verizon account it failed as well.  We just got our FIOS connnected. SO, is there a limit as to how big of a file can be received by Verizon FIOS?

    Hubrisnxs wrote:
i am pretty sure that if you are doing it through verizon.net emai webmail that it is 8 mb,  and if you do it through an email client like windows mail/outlook/entourage that you can do upto 20mb.
These are the limits for *sending* attachments from Verizon. The only limit on receiving is whether it would put you over your storage quota for your verizon.net mailbox. (Limit is 2 gigs for primary accounts and 250 megs for subs, includes mail in ALL folders.)
You said sending it failed. What error did you get? Was it an immediate error or a bounceback message?

  • How big a deal is the shared memory for video editing

    Hi,
It looks like the portable Mac I have been waiting for has been released. The one thing that I am wondering about is the shared video? memory. How big a deal is it?
It looks like it should not be an issue with iMovie. How about FCE?
With the Macbook at $1,300 and the entry level MBP at $2,000, $700 is a lot to me- budget and otherwise- Especially since I will add a gig of ram, and the 3 year apple protection plan.

    Hi There,
I use iMovie most of the time for around an hour project and went back and forth with iSlick FX, iTunes, garage band and iDVD, and I find my MAcBook serve me well (2.0 Ghz, 2 GB), and use external LCD for wider view editing area.
The chipset is actually allowed to use up to 224 mb of shared memory (with based 80 mb on os X) and the bigger matched memory you install, the more flexibility for that graphic chipset to allocate shared memory.
The only time my project getting choppy is when I select show waveform for entire clip in my project area. That is when the chipset is lack power to play it real time.
But if you are serious about getting editing and planning to upgrade to Final cut (express or pro) later, MacBook Pro is a better investment and bigger screen too.
    Good Luck

  • How big of a root partition should I have?

I am new to Archlinux and Linux in general. I recently installed my first Arch system but I have not yet installed a desktop environment for I am trying to learn the command line.  I was planning on using this weekend to set up a desktop environment but I cannot decide which one to use, so I will try them all (or at least Gnome and Xfce).  My question is how big of a root partition should I have to give me ample space to play around including having more than one desktop environment installed at once.  I currently have a 20 GB hard drive with my root partition set to 4 GB.

You don't say specifically which 24" iMac you have Aluminum or White. Here are instructions for the Aluminum:

If your iMac is still under warranty please remember doing this will probably void any warranty you have left.
