How big a library before degradation ????

I just wondered if there was a consensus to the size of an iphoto library before there was noticeable degradation in performance if the iPhoto application ?
I was running a library approximately in size with 15k photos on an older 2Ghz Macbook Core Duo. iPhoto bounced around 27 times before opening up.
We recently upgraded to a new Macbook Pro, 2.7Ghz i7.
Although opening up slightly faster, it is still pretty sow in scrolling though the photos, and generall feels a little sluggish.
I have actualy noticed a complete degradation since upgrading to iPhoto9. The previous version of iPhoto was nothing like this slow on the same library....
Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated.

iPhoto is good for 250,000 images, and so 15k is not a big library.
As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • How to backup library before an iTunes reinstallation

I run Vista, and I happened to have the problem of my CD/DVD drive disappearing on me. I googled it, figured out how to fix it by deleting a couple registry items and restarting, and it started working again. Only thing is, right after that every time I open iTunes I now get a message saying iTunes can no longer import CD's because something got changed, please reinstall. I kept ignoring it, and now iTunes won't even open up. So my question is, how can I for back up my iTunes library before uninstalling, so I won't have to manually import every song file. I have multiple copies of some songs and I don't want those back in the library after reinstalling. Also, after that how would I go about reimporting my old library?
    Thank you.

External drives (for backing up) are less than $100.
    Backup software will run automatically.
If everything on your computer disappeared right now or you r hard drive died and it would not affect/bother you in the least, you could get by without a backup.
But since you are here asking how to backup some files...
I highly suggest you consider it.

  • How big aperture library can be?

    Hi,
My aperture library is 50 gb and is going to be around 200 gb by the end of the month. Do you think i may get problems or corrupted files because of its size.
Would it be wiser for me to work with referenced files. And if yes, how can i export my curent library and referenced it.
Thanks so much for your help.
    Eric

If you go File>relocate masters and therefore go to a referenced configuration, your library will be quite small. I have 500 Gb of referenced images and a 12 Gb Library.

  • How large a library before corruption concerns?

My current iPhoto library has 13,844 photos. The library folder is 40GB. iPhoto launches slowly, but otherwise behaves fine. I haven't added anything new to iPhoto in two years (long story) but have another 15-20GB to add (best guess another 5000 photos).
I run a nightly backup to an external HD so I'm not TOO concerned, but at what point should I say enough is enough and stop adding photos? I know the theoretical limit is 250,000 photos but know bad things can happen to good libraries. I don't expect a perfect answer, just curious if there's a consensus on a reliable max size.

    Mitch:
Libraries of only a few hundred can get a corrupted database file. The know reason is sudden quitting of iPhoto while writing to the file or a sudden power outage. Others have just opened the library one morning and it's bad. For that type of corruption following the Tip at the end of my signature can get you back to normal.
If you leave the rolls open that will greatly slow down iPhoto's opening and closing. Best to have them all closed except those your using at the time and close them before quitting.
I don't know anything about your setup but if you're low in free disk space that can slow down iPhoto, the system and just about all the other apps. It's highly recommended that you have a minimum of 15% or 10G, whichever is greater, free.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB file backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How big can a mySQL db be before performance degradation?

    Hi there,
I have a Flex app that accesses a mySQL database via PHP built using the Flex Builder wizard. It works fine but I have some questions about how big the database can be before the loading of tables begins to bog down the application too much.
Basically the way it works, as learned by David Gassner's Flex Bible and other sources, is that when my Flex app launches, it loads all the tables in the entire database into the Flex app.
Then, the different bits of information are displayed based on filter functions. Each user that logs in has different amounts of their own personal information that can be viewed and updated.
The thing is, based on the way it's built, ALL information in the entire database is loaded into Flex, then it's filtered based on which user has logged in. This works fine really, but I have one table in that database that has grown to about 20,000 rows of really simple text-based information. According to phpMyAdmin that table's usage is 1,971.1 KiB, which is what, almost 2 MB?
The thing I'm concerned about is as this mySQL database grows, the loading of my Flex app's data upon launch will become so slow for everyone because it may get so big. Is this a feasible concern? How big have your SQL databases been?
Is it possible in Flex to somehow filter the data on the server first from mySQL, then load only the required data up? So that users that have very little data in their account don't have to wait for the entire mySQL database to load first?
Any advice about this is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, that makes sense.
I know how to pass a variable from Flex to a PHP script. Is there anyone that can help me modify the canned Flex PHP Wizard script for "Find All" so that it simply takes my "where" variable that I pass to it and returns only the data that fits it. Just like this:
    SELECT *
    FROM `myTable`
    WHERE `variable_id` =7
Currently the generated Flex Builder PHP just gets everything in the entire database but I'm not a PHP wiz and I can imagine that the canned PHP script can be easily modified to accept my variable and then run the query as usual.
Any help would be appreciated and I would be willing to pay someone to help me on this one.
    Thanks

  • How can i transfer rental movies from my Ipad to my iTunes library before updating

how can i transfer rental movies from my Ipad to my iTunes library before updating ?

    According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1415 :
You can move the rental between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period. However, the movie can only be played on one device at a time. If you rent a movie or TV show on an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Apple TV, it is not transferable to any other device and you must watch it on that device.
So I assume that you cannot use File > Transfer Purchases to copy them to your computer (though there is no harm in trying)

    Good morning
I am trying to upgrade my iPhone via my macbook but the following message keeps coming up and the download does not work
"There are purchased items on the iPhone “Mark Price’s iPhone” that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this"
Please advise how I can transfer these files, I am not sure what files are in question.
I've only had the MacBook a couple of days, I am PC savvy but this is all new to me so please keep it as simple as possible. I am a brit based in Bahrain.

okay I've done everything regarding the transfer process (via file>transfer purchases) and syncing, so everything on my iPhone device seems to have been transferred to my iMac... however, I still get that message ("There are purchased items on the iPhone..."), trying to upgrade the iOS Have tried several times the same process of hitting transfer purchases via file, but nothing seems to make that message go away! Would have been nice to know which files I actually do need to transfer, which I don't get any info on of course...
Starting to get really annoying this thing.. Any smart suggestions what's going on?

  • How big of a hard drive can I stuff in my 13" white mac book?

    Hi,
I have a (june 2007) 13" 2.16 GhZ, 2 GB RAM Intel Core 2 Duo white macbook with a 120 GB hard drive. The hard drive is about 3/4 of the way full and I am starting to shop around for an upgrade. According to apple, my macbook is upgradable to 250 GB but I have found a WD 320 GB drive that is supposedly compatible here
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=265&type=DataStorage&TI=2824&shoupgrds=ShowUpgrades
My question is, how big of a hard drive can I fit in my little macbook? I just want to be sure before I buy.
    Thanks!

I installed the 320 GB Western Digital drive in my BlackBook and it runs great. I checked it against my 80 GB drive with XBench and it has better response time.
While your in the buying mood you might want to consider a OWC Hard Drive Enclosures. I picked up one to install my old drive in so I could use it to help recover my system and to use for storage,

  • How big of a hardrive can i use in my gigabit ethernet g4 dual 500.

    Hi there.
I wanted to now how big of a hard drive can i use in my gigabit ethernet g4 powerpc with a dual 500 processor . at the present time i have one 80 and one 20 gig drive in there now.
So my answer is how big of a drive can i use before i have problems with seting it up. Like i want to use a 500 gig drive in my computer and my old 80 gig too. i want to buy a apple tv and store my dvds on the big 500 hardrive so i have alot of room for the vidio files, for apple t.v . If i can use one as big as one terabite you now the real big one that would be fine. The more room i have the better for me. I will be able to watch the movies i downloaded from the internet and i wont have to burn them at all.
This is of corse if apple tv will handle it.

    Hi-
If you need that much storage, and you'll have to buy a controller anyhow, get a SATA controller card, and put one or two 500gb SATA drives in. The enterprise class of SATA drives are made especially for multi media storage, have excellent seek times and fast data transfer rates. A "bargain" on a package can be had at OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/SATAM500GPCI/
    or
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/SATAM10TBPCI/
The MaxLine Pro drives have great characteristics, and are reviewed favorably.
I have an OWC SATA card, and the card works perfectly, and is cheaper than other makers cards of equivalent specs.

  • There are purchased items on the iPhone "asingh's iPhone" that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this iPhone. Are you sure you want to continue?

When I am trying to upgrade my iphone to IOS7.0.2 by connecting my my iphone and macbook, it shows "There are purchased items on the iPhone “asingh’s iPhone” that have not been transferred to your iTunes library. You should transfer these items to your iTunes library before updating this iPhone. Are you sure you want to continue? ".  I hit the same issue and lost a lot of apps from my iphone. Can someone help on how to resolve this issue? I can automatically upgrade my software on the iphone but how shall I resolve any future updates of "Apps"?

I appreciate the answer, but what you describe is not entirely accurate.  First, to even see view, you have to enable the menu by clicking on the icon in the upper left.  View allows you to show the sidebar.
Second, you will NOT see your devise listed in sidebar or anywhere else.  Instead, you have to click on "devise" from the sidebar menu, wait a minute, and then it will finally show up under "devise."   Or maybe it just takes a minute to show up whatever you do.
Third, right clicking on your devise will take you to a menu with "transfer my files" on it, but then iTunes will refuse to make the transfer.  Instead, it will tell you that <your apps> on your <devise> could not be transferred to iTunes "because you are not authorized for it on your computer."  Apple unhelpfully suggests going to store> authorize this computer.  There is a "store" menu item on the sidebar, but it has no "authorize this computer" sub-menu.  Instead, go to the horizontal menu at the upper left, and THERE you will find "store" and the "authorize this computer" sub-menu.  Now you can transfer your files, to who knows where.
My iPhone 5 is my first Apple devise. So far my experience has been, to do A, which must be done right now, you must first do B.  To do B you must first do C, which is unexplained save in answers in user forums.  To do C you must first do D, which, after several hours of research and puzzle solving, can eventually be done.

  • Lion won't even start to download; How big is the download?

First: I tried to download Lion from the Applestore (the big round button with a lion in it). For about 0.5 sec. I got "Loading ..." then :
The address is redirected and returns:
"Safari can’t open “macappstore://ax.search.itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZContentLink.woa/wa/link? path=mac%2fosxlion&ign-mscache=1&affC=QQADAAAH0wAMiXUgNGRmNjMwODJmMTQzYzA0MGYxZD E2ZjFhMTc5NTI1MTYGNDE2NTY1&ign-msr=http%3A%2F%2Fstore.apple.com%2***%2Fbrowse%2F home%2Fshop_mac%2Fsoftware%3Fmco%3DOTY2ODQyOQ” because Mac OS X doesn’t recognize Internet addresses starting with “macappstore:”.
So, bowled out before even reaching the stumps. Any ideas?
Second: How big is the Lion download?
    Thanks.

Nikolai Yde: Just to be sure (in the UK we use a stop as a decimal point and a comma to separate thousands): do you mean three and 74 hundredths of a GB? = 3740000 Bytes?
At a download speed of 6 Mbps, that will take me 4986.67 sec. = 83.1 min. That's OK.
    Thanks

  • How big domain.sites can be without problem?

Ok. My site right now is just 60 MB so I wonder How bigger can it get?
Because until now I haven't had any problem using iWeb but people frequently is posting problem with publishing and alike.
So sometimes I'm afraid of getting in problems if my sites get larger.
Can you show me how big is your website in iWeb please?

    MacFirePro2:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I have a number of iWeb domain files that are above 100 MB going up to 256 MB. I use iWebSites to manage multiple sites.. It lets me create multiple sites and multiple domain files.
If you have multiple sites in one domain file here's the workflow I used to split them into individual site files with iWebSites. Be sure to make a backup copy of your original Domain.sites files before starting the splitting process.
This lets me edit several sites and only republish the one I want.
