How big is my iPhoto library?

iPhoto 11 ver 9.4.3, OSX 10.8.5 (Mt. Lion):
Checking the info box in Photos or Events gives the answer 10.6 GB.
Checking iPhoto Library in the Photos section of Finder gives the answer 13.72 GB.
That is a difference of 3.12 GB.
Why the difference?

I think I have found the answer:  the library is a very complex thing full of mysterious but apparently useful parts that serve to connect everything in various ways.  The Photos/Events are just the pictures, without all the connections etc.
Your iPhoto library holds the original image files you imported (that is the largest part), JPEG previews of the edited photos for sharing with other applications, thumbnails for browsing the iPhoto library, small thumbnails of the faces, and database files to describe the relations between photos and other library items like albums, books, etc.
If you are syncing with iTunes there may be also an iPod photo Cache, see iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder

How to share administrator iPhoto library with other users on same iMac?

This is the part I'm referring to:
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
The library stays in the Pictures folder for this.

  • Can some please provide instructions on how to import an iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Mac without getting a bunch of duplicates?  I tried transferring my pictures using an external hard drive and then copying it to the Pictures folder on my Mac

Can someone please provide instructions on how to import an iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Mac without getting a bunch of duplicates?  I tried transferring my pictures using an external hard drive and then copying it to the Pictures folder on my new Mac.  I ended up getting a bunch of duplicates. My old Mac has an older version of iPhoto while the new Mac has iPhoto '11.  Is that the cause of the problem?  Please advise.  Thanks.

Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • HT204414 how to merge my iPhoto Library into my Photos System Library or how to import photos from iPhoto to Photos?

Can anyone tell me how to merge my iPhoto Library into my Photos System Library or how to import photos from iPhoto to Photos?

How many did you trash at one go? iPhoto will baulk and possibly corrupt if you try trash too many at one go. Expereinced users recommend getting rid of them in batches of about 100 or so.
What's your plan for the remaining images in the iPhoto Library (the 2k photos and 4 videos)?

  • How to move my iPhoto library to a new iMAC?

how to move my iPhoto library to a new iMAC?

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network, Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

Simply export some photos from iPhoto to a folder on the desktop and experiment.

  • How do I move iPhoto library to a wireless, remote HD?

How do I move iPhoto library to a wireless, remote HD?

    Same as any HD.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
But Note: A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.

  • IPhoto 9.6: How to move your iPhoto library to a new location?

    Hello,
How do I move my iPhoto libraries from my system disk to a data only disk in iPhoto 9.6?
I followed the instructions on this support website titled " iPhoto 9.5: How to move your iPhoto library to a new location."
However, this only appears to have copied the libraries, not move them.
According to what I see in Finder, I now have the same library on two different disks, but that was not my intention.
    Thank you

So, delete the one from the unwanted location.
When you move data across volumes by default it is copied to the new location, afterwards you delete it from the previous location. It's a sensible protection against dataloss of anything goes wrong with the copy.

  • How best to reduce iPhoto Library size?

    1. Can I delete big HD movie files from iPhoto (that were uploaded from camera) after I have run iMovie so they are now iMovie Events, without any subsequent impact (ie, deletion of) my iMovie Events?
    2. How can I find out size of iPhoto Books to see if it's worth moving them (and all those photos) to a second Library on an external drive?
I have 100GB in 15K photos & 227 movies, but Finder says iPhoto Library is 134GB. That implies that the Book Projects are big and self-contained rather than pointers, but I think I read somewhere that if I just move photos from this Library to a second Library,  it will "break" the books still left on the first Library?
A search found an old link to Old Toad's application note about duplicating/moving Libraries on web.mac.com but that's no longer available. Is there a new link?
    Thanks.

    1. Can I delete big HD movie files from iPhoto (that were uploaded from camera) after I have run iMovie so they are now iMovie Events, without any subsequent impact (ie, deletion of) my iMovie Events?
You really need to ask that on the iMovie forum. It's very possible that it just links to the material stored in iPhoto.
    2. How can I find out size of iPhoto Books to see if it's worth moving them (and all those photos) to a second Library on an external drive?
Book projects are not large. They are entries in the database only. They take up negligible amounts of space.
There is no way to move a book from one Library to another.
I have 100GB in 15K photos & 227 movies, but Finder says iPhoto Library is 134GB.
The  iPhoto Window reports the nominal size of a folder if you exported everything from iPhoto at the Current setting.
The Finder reports the size of the Library Installation. This includes: Original shots, Preview of Edited shots, thumbnails, database files, cache files and so on. All of these are required for iPhoto to work. There is no material in the Library that can be deleted.
If space is an issue you can run a Library from an external disk:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How to restore an Iphoto library from Time Machine

I backed up last sunday onto time machine -all went well. Due to sillyness lost my Iphoto library from my 13 inch afterwards;I was trying to transfer my data to another mac (my 15 inch that had a new hard drive )using migration assistant . no Iphoto libray in either but I assume it is in Time machine( sudays one)
How easy and how does one restore from Time Machine something like the Iphoto Library ? this is my only record of 3211 photos so dont want to stuff it up ??!!
thanks to anyone ,as my wife will kill me if I get it wrong??!!
    Amr

If you are using iPhoto 7, just launch iPhoto and then enter Time Machine. You can browse back through Time Machine with iPhoto's own interface.
This doesn't work in iPhoto 5. With iPhoto 5, you have to use a Finder window in Time Machine to navigate back to your iPhoto Library folder (in homefolder -> Pictures by default) and restore it.
I'm not sure which way it works in iPhoto 6.

  • How to choose an iPhoto Library to sync in iTunes?

I have 3 iPhoto Library in my Mac. I want to sync my iPhone with one of them, but I don't know how to choose in iTunes the right Library.
In this moment I have one selected, but it's not the one I want.
    Can anyone help me?
    thanks

Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down, click on Choose Library, and specify the one you want to sync. iTunes will only sync the iPhone with the iPhoto library set as the default in iPhoto.

  • How Can I Share iPhoto Library/Keywords Among Multiple Users

Hi there! I am having a bit of a dilemma where I am trying how I can have several users access a shared iPhoto library (as well as retain their own personal iPhoto libraries). Basically, I have a handful of (three) users that need to be able to store/search against a common shared photo library - ideally, in iPhoto.
I understand that I can share albums through iPhoto (users are using a mix of iPhoto '08 and '09) on one account as long as iPhoto is running - a serious drawback. When I tried sharing photos via this method I was able to see the shared albums; however the keywords that were defined for those photos were not available. This presents two questions:
    1) Can iPhoto share its library among multiple users (including keywords, etc) so that if a user account (let's call it "media") shares out selected albums that the viewing users (user1 and user2) can search against the keywords in the host library? Or is this not possible with iPhoto?
    2) Is there another way of sharing photos that is more efficient and can be hosted on our private servers? The interface in iPhoto is amazing - and if there was an application that allowed for that same sort of feel/tagging we would be good to go...

Well here is the weird thing. If I was sharing out the library from my computer, I could search for the keywords (and obtain results) as expected. However, if I went to another computer that was viewing my shared library, searching by the same keyword did not return any results.

  • How do I move iPhoto library to an external hard drive?

I'm Running iPhoto 08 under leopard, and because my old laptop hard drive is just too small, I've cloned it onto an external hard drive.  I have relocated my iTunes library to the external drive and would now like to do the same to my iPhoto library so that I can free up much needed space on the iBooks drive.
How should I do this?  I also have pictures from an earlier iphoto library on another computer.  I would like to bring these into my main iphoto library and consolidate the two.  Is this possible?

    1. Drag it over, launch iPhoto with the Option key held down, and point it there.
    2. Use the iPhoto Library Manager.
