How can I access data on an external drive in my mac after all folders have been turned into .lnk files? I am desperate!

I don't know what happened, I connected my external hd today and all files had been turned into that!

I know I am going to sound really stupid when I ask this, but how do I do that? There was this folder called Recycle Bin, which I have deleted already but the files are still in the same format. I know they are in the HD 'cause of the space taken up in it, but I would like to know exactly what to do to clear the malware altogether and have access to the stuff I have again.
Thank you very much in advance and sorry for being such a dummy

    Plug an external drive into the computer and use that to expand data onto.

  • G'day.  I am using iMovie 11 and need to clear disk space.  How can I do that using an external drive, leaving me the option to go back and make changes or access old events or projects from that external drive?

    G'day.  I am using iMovie 11 and need to clear disk space.  How can I do that using an external drive, leaving me the option to go back and make changes or access old events or projects from that external drive?

    The slightly bigger question is whether you want to move all movie content to the external drive (essentially meaning that drive will always need to be attached when you're working with your videos), or whether you just want to archive older videos off to the external drive.
    If you want to move all videos, then just move the 'Movies' folder in your home directory to the external drive, then create an alias of the external 'Movies' back in to your home directory. Now the 'Movies' icon in your home directory will point to the external drive and everything will just work (as long as the external drive is attached when you launch iMovie)
    If you want to archive older movies then each Movie should have its own subdirectory within your Movies folder. These can easily be moved off to the external drive, and moved back should you ever need to work on those movies again.

  • How can i transfer photos from my iPhone 4s o myimac iPhoto easily? i have been doing via message, however the photos are blurred once on the imac, thanks,

    Hi.
    How can i transfer photos from my iPhone 4s o myimac iPhoto easily? i have been doing via message, however the photos are blurred once on the imac.
    thanks,

    You can send photos from your iPhone via email, drag the photos from the email window to the desktop then open in iPhoto.
    Open a photo on your iPhone then tap the share icon bottom left corner of your screen then tap Next then tap Mail. Send the photo to yourself.
    Open Mail then control click the photo then click Open with then click iPhoto. If iPhoto is not available from the pop up menu click Other then navigate to the Applications folder then click iPhoto.

  • Can I transfer data from one external drive to another using my MacAir as a platform?

    I am trying to transfer about 94 Gigs of data from one external drive (Touro) to another (Seagate) using my Mac Air which only has about 14 Gigs of available space.  How best can I accomplish this operation?

    Niel - I know that I must be a real dunce on this.  I tried opening the additional window on finder and then dragging and dropping from the Touro drive to the other open finder window for the Seagate drive.  Again, it bounced back.  What is NTFS? And how do I find if either or both of the drives are formatted in that manner?
    Again, thanks for you help on this.
    JC
    PS  I just got the info on the Seagate that it is Windows NTFS formatted.  What do I do now?  Is Paragon something I can download off the Internet?  Why, since I formatted the Seagate to run on my Mac Air would there still be a problem?  The packaging on the Seagate says it is compatible with Mac OS systems. jc

  • How Can I Keep Music on an External Drive?

    I've dealt with this issue before and asked questions about it, but I STILL don't understand how iTunes works when it comes to its "Library" "Media Folder" etc.
    Can anyone break it down for me exactly how it all works? Is there a good resource to explain it?
    The basic problem I have is the same one that many people have: I keep my actual music on an external hard drive. However, if I launch iTunes when that hard drive isn't plugged in, iTunes somehow changes so that all my music vanishes no matter what I do. Plugging in my hard drive doesn't help. iTunes has created a new Library that contains a list of all my music but with no idea where that music is. I try to tell iTunes where that music is, but nothing works.
    You'd think an easy fix would be to always plug in the hard drive first. However, even that doesn't help. iTunes will sometimes not see that hard drive when it is plugged in, and I have no way to predict when it sees the drive and when it doesn't. I start adding new music or podcasts, and it might all be being added to some new library iTunes created and I'm totally lost once again.
    On the Preferences/Advanced tab there is the option to change your Media Folder location, but that doesn't work. My music is on the external hard drive, but there is no Media Folder there. The iTunes Media Folder is here: My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media
    I've read that you can hold down the Shift key when you launch iTunes and then you get the option to "Choose Library" or "Create Library." The idea is that iTunes has created a new empty Library and that you just have to select your old Library to get things back to normal. However, there is only ever one Library file listed. There is no new one and old one to select from. There is no Library file on the external drive, either. So I have no idea what I'm looking for.
    If I choose "Create Library", it then asks me for a "Folder name". I don't know what that is, either. I thought I'd just have to give my new Library a name. The more I try to deal with this issue, the more confused I get.
    To further muddy the waters, under the "General" tab on the iTunes preferences page, it lists my library as "Doug's Library", the name I gave it long ago. However, the option to choose "Doug's Library" never comes up. I've never seen a file with that name or a Library with that name. So what is that all about?
    I've used Windows Explorer to go into the iTunes folder to see what files are there, and then it gets more confusing. There is a file called "iTunes Library" and a second file called "iTunes Music Library." Why does the music have a second Library file?
    Any suggestions or guidance? There has to be a way to cut through all this confusion. I've had so many problems with iTunes along these lines that I've literally stopped using it to listen to music. It's just not worth the hassle. I spend far more hours trying "fix" iTunes than listening to music with it.
    Thanks to anyone who can point me in the right direction.
    Doug

    I do the same thing as you do...
    My music is on an external drive as to not use up gigabytes of storage that need not be used for media.
    There are a couple basic principles to iTunes that I believe you should know.
    1. iTunes is not a media storage program. It does not store your media "in iTunes". It simply is an organization tool for your media already on a hard disk.
    2. As iTunes is not a storage mechanism, it has no way to "know" whether or not the media that is listed is actually there. This is where the "design" of iTunes comes into play.
    I like to think of iTunes as a bread-crumb trail. The "music" in iTunes, isn't actually there. The bread crumb is the location on the external hard drive.
    If that bread crumb trail disappears (in this case the external drive you use). If said external drive is not plugged in, that bread crumb trail is not able to be followed. iTunes is "lost" and unable to find the media. The only way to remedy this is to place the media on your local drive.
    To address your issue of the library. If you hold down shift, you can select your library on your external drive. It will be a file with an .itl extension. The folder name will be your external drive.
    I go into edit > preferences > advanced and set my library to the correct location. Make sure you check the box "Copy to iTunes Folder when importing" (or whatever it says).
    You can't fix the issue of iTunes not seeing the media if your drive is unplugged unless you physically move the content to your OS HDD...Or any other HDD you use.

  • How can I place iTunes on my external drive

    I would like to place itunes on my hard drive to preserve space on my laptop. How can I go about the process.
    Thanks in advance.

    iTunes the application  cannot really be moved. If you mean your collection:
    iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
    do not confuse moving your whole folder and library with moving just media files as in
    iTunes for Mac: Moving your iTunes Media folder - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449
    Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.
    iTunes Terminology
    - iTunes - the application itself.
    - iTunes account - an account with Apple used to buy items from the iTunes Store
    - Computer account - a user area on a computer
    - iTunes library - Usually refers to a specific file on your computer (library.itl) that contains information about all the media you use with itunes, playlists, play count, etc.
    - iTunes collection (library) - The collection of iTunes files and media files and folders that makes a complete package that represents all you have in iTunes and the files presenting this organization.

  • Failing/Failed Harddrive - How can I access data?

    The HDD in my Powerbook G4 is seriously failing and when checked with Disk Utility it says that I must backup what I can and replace it.
    The computer won't boot and the drive is audibly shagged. The best I can do is boot to CD and use Disk Utility from there (where it tells me how broken my computer is). My computer gets an IP address when booted from CD and I can ping it from another computer but I cant access the user accounts as I normally can using \\ipaddress\username. This isn't too surprising really.
    Does anyone know how I might be able to access my data?
    Thanks
    Chris
    P.S. Please don't ask me if I've been taking regular backups over the last 2 years and as such might not have lost absolutely everything!

    Does this sound like the a hard-drive that is accessible? If I connect it via Firewire disk mode I assume that my HDD will act like an external HDD attached to the 2nd machine?
    Hi, Chris. That sounds like a hard drive that may be accessible on the same momentary and much-interrupted basis as it is now for a few more seconds, minutes, hours or days — there's no way to tell. You might get really lucky and have a chance to back all your files up in one attempt via FW Target Disk Mode, or you might get halfway through backing up the first file and have the drive quit for good. Or you might get part of your data backed up, but only in the course of a hundred restarts. All we can do is wish you luck and point out that given the uncertainty of the situation, you'd better begin the backup process with your most important files. Plan ahead, and have your highest-priority files listed.
    Yes, in FWTDM the drive will appear as an external drive connected to the host Mac.

  • How can I access data from accidentally deleted user?

    I was given a MacBook Pro by a family member. I set myself as the Administrator, but could not get rid of the previous owner's name on the Home folder.
    In my attempts I accidentally deleted something that made the entire computer unaccessable. I can boot up, however, all the work and applications I installed are unaccessable. I can't even open Preferences.
    I used TechTool Pro to start up and explore the drive, and found that the previous owner's name was on a folder with a red-circled minus sign. The data (considerable) was inside, but I can't access it.
    Is there any way I can get access to that data? I slaved the laptop to my iMac and transferred the folder (with 32 gb of data).
    When I tried to open it I got the message: "The folder "sandy....." can't be opend because you don't have permission to see its contents." I used Get Info on the folder and changed Sharing and Permissions to Read and Write, but still no access.
    What can I do, if anything to gain access to that folder?

  • How can I access data in different panels?

    Hi,
    I'm a beginner in Swing and have a simple(?) question. Unfortunately I didn't find the answer by oneself so I hope you can help me.
    I have three classes. In the GUI.java class I build the JFrame and it's components. All components are added to the frame via panels that a separate classes.
    My problem is: how can I acces the values in PanelB when I call the actionPerfomed in PanelA? Or is that always a bad design? How can I make it better?
    GUI.java
    JFrame frame = new JFrame();
    PanelA panelA = new PanelA();
    PanelB panelB = new PanelB();
    frame.getContentPane().add(panelA);
    frame.getContentPane().add(panelB);PanelA.java

    JButton buttonCalculate;
    ...PanelB.java
    JList valuesX;
    JList valuesY;
    JButton addValueX;

    Here is the code for a Short, Self Contained, Correct (Compilable), Example

  • Can't access part of an external drive

    Hi
    I have an external drive plugged into my Mac and, today, I've not been able to access just one folder with the drive. I ran Disk Utility and it told me the drive was damaged and could not be repaired without reformatting.
    I'm keen to recover the data within the folder. Can anyone suggest a way of doing this, please?
    Cheers
    Phil

    Phil:
    I've not been able to access just one folder with the drive.
    Does that mean that you were able to access/recover everything else?
    See if Dr. Smoke's FAQ Data Recovery helps. You can download DataRescue 3 and see if can locate the folder. If it does you will need to purchase the license to recover it.

  • Can't Access iPhoto Archive on External Drive in '08

    I'm scared.
    I've been archiving all of my family photos with iPhoto and storing them on an external drive.
    I recently upgraded to Leopard, and iPhoto '08 from the previous '06 version.
    Now I can not open / import the iPhoto Archives that are stored on my external drive in iPhoto '08.
    They're showing that they have data - but they're the kind of archives that you create straight from iPhoto - so I can't actually go into it and look at each individual image file manually without opening them through iPhoto.......
    Please help. I'll never forgive myself if I've lost these photos. (Irreplaceable).

    Russell
    But you can see the pic via iPhoto right?
    There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    To upload to MySpace or any site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
    This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use THIS
    If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
    If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser. Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves. If you're willing to risk database corruption, you can restore the older functionality simply by right clicking on the iPhoto Library and choosing 'Show Package Contents'. Then simply make an alias to the folders you require and put that alias on the desktop or where ever you want it. Be aware though, that this is a hack and not supported by Apple.

  • How can I back up to an external drive with three partitions using Time Machine?

    I have an external drive connected to my MBPro. The external drive has three partitions: one dedicated to the MBPro, one dedicated to my iMac and one for Photos.   How can I be sure that when I backup my MBPro, it does so to the dedciated partition?
    Also, I eject each of the partition icons on my desktop through the Eject selection in Finder menu and then I turn off the external drive and disconnect it.  However, when I connect and turn the external drive to start it up again, the  a message comes up that it has not been ejected properly.  How am I supposed to eject the partitions and drive?
    Thanks for you helpl
    Vernon

    When you set up time machine you should select which partition to backup to, after that it should be automatic, mine is.
    I have not encountered your second problem, after ejecting the disks do you immeadiatley switch the drives off or leave them for 10-15 seconds to let them write the info stored on the disk drives internal buffer to disk?
    I usually use the CNTL Click on the drive and select eject, but that should not be any different than using the Finder menu.

  • How can I rescue data from bad hard drive

    My imac stop working last night. The imac goes to the apple logo and then it shut itself. I had ubuntu on my other partition, so when there and I was able to see the Macintosh HD. I called Apple care and they asked me to do a repair disk from my installing DVD, but I was getting repair failed. After couple of time he told me that the only way to fix this is by installing from the beginning, like erasing everything. I had a back from last year and I had some picture that I hadn't backup. So, I decide to buy an hard drive. When I came back, I when to ubuntu and I was still able to see the Macintosh HD. I was having problem on ubuntu, so I decide to reboot and then I didn't have neither Mac partition nor Ubuntu. I insert the leopard dvd and when I check my hard drive on disk utility, I don't see any partition. I would like to know if there is a way to recover the data that I had on my mac partition. By the way everything happen after I upgraded Safary.

    Hi
    If you can't access the drive using the normal methods (DU) you might be struggling? You could have a go and use something like Data Rescue:
    http://www.prosofteng.com/
    As long as the drive is spinning you might stand a chance? If you can physically hear the drive whirring/clicking or making cricket/scratching like noises or a slight hum when its powered up you might be wasting your time?
    If the drive sounds 'normal' you might want to try:
    http://www.alsoft.com/
    If you were so inclined and able you could set up your own highly controlled and engineered environment. Physically take the drive apart and try to read the platters themselves. You would need specialized software (expensive) or you could develop something suitable yourself.

  • How do I transfer data from an external drive?

    I have a mac mini and i want to transfer some, but not all data from it to my new macbook air. The person at the Apple Store told me i could use my external drive to do this by connecting it to my macbook air. I'm a bit confused on how to get this done. Also, when i transfer the data, do i open and drag and drop into the applications, i.e. iPhoto, Numbers, etc., or onto the hard drive?

    I have used the external for backup for the mac mini. It already has all of the data on it.
    I am trying to take data from the external and put it on my macbook air.
    This is what the guy at the Apple Store told me to do. He said I could just drag and drop any of the data in this manner. I'm confused by your reply. Do I just not understand your explaination?
