I bought 2 months ago an iPhone 4 from UK. I don't live there, i am from Romania. The phone according to the invoice and the offer from the shop, was SIM Free as i requested, and paid full price for it. The employee from the store told me that the phone will lock automatically on the first SIM network that i insert in it. Because i wanted to use the phone home, i didn't insert any SIM in it. After i arrived home and bought a micro SIM, a noticed that during the activation process i received a message: "Only compatible SIM cards from a supported Carrier may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit a supported Carrier's store to receive a replacement SIM card."
After seeing this, i tought that i am doing something wrong so i went to the Orange Romania shop from my city. They told me, that my iPhone is locked. I told them that i didn't use it in UK, just now when i arrived home so how come it's locked when i paid full price for a SIM Free one. They told me that it's locked for UK, not on a specific network.
My question is, how come is this possible? I emailed the store from where i bought the phone but they told me that they sold me a SIM Free iPhone and they are trying to say that i inserted a SIM card from a UK network before coming home, which is not true.
In my situation, what do i have to do? Can i find out details about my iPhone, such like, if anybody activated and then reseted before was sold to me and because of that the phone is locked now?
I really want to use the iPhone but i can't do it without the SIM card that i want to insert in it. I hope that you can help me!

The "Sim Free" iPhones, sold in the UK, will lock to the first UK carrier whose sim is inserted in the phone. They will not acticate or work with any other carrier, other than a UK carrier.
Return it for a refund as it will be useles to you where you live. You won't be able to activate it or get it officially unlocked. You'd first have to activate it in the UK & then regust the UK carrier to authorize the phone's official unlocking.

You should still be able to manually manage the music on your iPhone within iTunes. Make sure that when your iPhone is plugged in, look in the Summary tab to see if “Manually manage music and videos” is enabled and you can even you turn off Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected. Take a look at the first article below to give more information on that. As far as your other questions about calling someone, I have provided two options for you. Clarisworks, you need Appleworks, which will only work with Mac OS X10.6.8 or earlier. See this tip if you must go newer. Mac Pros with newer hardware configuration than July 20, 2011 can't use Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier without this tip and then it would be Mac OS X Server. I'm not sure if the new black Mac Pro supports that configuration or not.
iPhoto, there is an iPhoto for all versions of Mac OS X.
iTunes, there is an iTunes for all versions of Mac OS X. Note with iTunes versions 11 and later, which are needed for syncing with iOS 7 or or later, you will lose coverflow, if you liked that feature. Sadly you can't run an older version of iTunes from within Mac OS X 10.9 or later.

Contrary to what Geeks on Hugs is telling you, Mac OS X does indeed have a basic malware scanner. It is not a feature that is directly accessible to the user, and works a bit differently than every other malware scanner out there. Gatekeeper, which has been mentioned here, is entirely separate, and provides a different method for helping to protect you against malware.
The anti-malware scanner in Mac OS X is called XProtect. When you download an application (or any other kind of executable code), it is automatically "quarantined," so that when you open it you're asked if you really want to do that. I'm sure you're very familiar with this aspect of Mac OS X if you have ever downloaded any apps from outside the App Store. What you don't know, though, is that each time you try to open a new app, that app is checked by XProtect. If it is identified as malware, you will not be allowed to open it, and will be warned that it's malware.

Do you know there is the lock/unlock thing on the top or bottom right? If that doesn't work, hold down the middle circle and top portion of the circle button at the same time and hold until the screen goes black. Let go and soon an apple will appear. If you wait / press some buttons (i am not sure exactly how this part works) it will turn white and then the screen will appear again. You have all your music and everything still but the problem should be gone. This also works if your iPod ever freezes.

Again, i-devices are not realy intended to be used as stand-alone devices, certainly not when you're talking about extended options. We do use an iPhone without a computer but it has never been synced in the 2 years we have had it and has no media on it other than what is produced by the camera.
You talk about downloading new music, but without the Mac you pretty much won't be able to do that anyway. You can purchase music from the iTunes Store and then it is, or course, in iCloud and can be downloaded to other devices too from there (with small limitations into which I won't go).

Purchased a new, unlocked iPhone 4 directly from apple.com. We're going to be using it for in-house testing, and we don't want/need a service plan.
But we can't activate the phone without a SIM card. The only decent advice we've gotten is to activate it with someone else's iPhone 4 SIM card. But we'd need to do the same thing for any iOS update.
When I visited AT&T, they said I couldn't get an iPhone 4 SIM without a contract. I'm not entirely sure that employee was correct.

You can purchase an unlocked iPhone, without contract, directly from Apple online or in any Apple retail store. Then get a cheap T-Mobile sim & activate the phone. Any T-Mobile store will be glad to help. AT&T wants ALL iPhone users under contract. While it is possible to establish service on a post-paid basis, AT&T does not like to do this for iPhone users. Since your phone is officially unlocked, you don't have to deal with AT&T.
