How can i backup iphoto in time machine from external drive

I have recently placed iphoto onto an external drive to save on space.  How can I still ensure that this is backed up on time machine?
Thanks

  • Can I back up to Time Machine from hard drive of failed Macbook?

My Macbook has just completely failed (I think an issue with power supply).
I had a bulging battery and have a new Macbook Pro on the way, but as I live in a very remote area this is taking a while. So, one day, my Macbook just wouldn't start again.
I hadn't backed up to Time Machine for about a week and would really like to get all the missing data. When the new computer arrives I'm planning to use Migration Assistant to migrate all my data from Time Machine.
So, my question is, is it possible to back up to Time Machine from the hard drive of my dead Macbook? I was thinking either cloning it somehow, or making a disk image and booting it from another Macbook, but this is stretching the limits of my limited IT skills. I don't want to interfere with the other Macbook I'm using or inadvertently wipe the data on the hard drive or Time Machine disk.
    Any advice much appreciated!
My Macbook ran Snow Leopard and was up to date with software updates as of two days ago. It was purchased about two years ago, but I think it's manufacture date was about March 2008.

    Thanks Noondaywitch and Pondini!
The HD of the failed Macbook turned out to be fine. Just to be safe I did a full functional back-up of my Time Machine disk to another external disk as well as cloning my Macbook hard drive using Carbon Cloner to another partition of the external disk.
I then booted from a friend's Macbook and did an incremental Time Machine backup from the original Macbook HD to the original TM backup (making sure I excluded the host computer's hard drive from the backup!); when I did the backup it asked whether I wanted to "Reuse backup" I clicked yes.
As said, the hard drive was fine, but at setup I needed an ethernet or firewire connection, which I didn't have on the enclosure, so I migrated my data to the new Macbook Pro using the original TM backup. Strangely, the backup said it was transferring only 120GB, whereas the HD had 150GB of used space. Redundant files, etc. perhaps? Anyway, it's just transferring now, so will sit back and read the paper and see what it looks like in an hour and a half!
    Thanks very much again!
Now, if anyone's got any suggestions to fix my old Macbook, which I was going to give away to impecunious friends if they bought a new battery……
HD is fine, power seems buggered, the rest, I don't know. Suggestions welcomed (I live 300+kms from the nearest service centre, so it's strictly DIY or go to local computer shop who know nothing about Macs).

  • Can't open iPhoto on Time Machine from within iPhoto

I have all my iPhoto (iLife 11) libraries backed up to Time Capsule. When I enter Time Machine to restore any other item (for example a Word document) it works fine. But when I try to restore an iPhoto library I get the message that I don't have permission to restore an iPhoto file. I've repaired all permissions through Disk Utility and checked all the file permissions through 'Get Info'.
I saw others were experiencing difficultions and they suggested opening Time Machine through iPhoto. This works well for Address Book. But when I open iPhoto and then open Time Machine the desktop is selected instead and I have to go through the Desk top on the Time Capsule to find the User-Pictures- correct Library. I then can't restore either a library or a single picture because of the permissions issue. I notice that when I select the iPhoto library in Time Machine and then select 'Open with iPhoto' it doesn't.
I've tried using a second external hard drive as the Time Capsule but the same thing happens.
I'm running a PowerMac 2x2.8 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon with Lion.
    Any ideas?

but I got there) but every time I got as far as 'restore to folder' - and selected the disk image in the Finder sidebar I got a message that the disk was too small. I increased the size of the disk from 100 MB to 500 MB to 639 (CD size) (following your instructions each time) and still got the message even though the selected library was only 805.8 MB. And that's my smallest library!!!
You need to select something larger than 806 MB.
I also tried the suggestion to 'reset the password and/or user permission' but neither 'CMD and R' keys nor the Alt/Option key brought up the Recovery HD.
That option won't help with existing backups -- only the current contents of your user home folder, and subsequent backups.
Are you using a wired keyboard?  If not, that might be the problem -- sometimes a wireless keyboard isn't recongnized quickly enough during the startup sequence.
A Recovery HD is fairly important to have.  Do you recall when you installed Lion if you got a message about it not being created?
You can verify whether you have one, via Disk Utility.  First, enable Debug Mode:
Open the Terminal app (in your Applications/Utilities folder). Be very careful with this app.  It's a direct link into UNIX, the underpinnings of OSX, but without the protections of OSX.
In Terminal, the prompt looks like this:  <Computer Name>:~ <your name>$
(where <your name> is your short user name).  It's followed by a non-blinking block cursor.
Copy the following after the prompt: defaults write com.apple.diskutility DUDebugMenuEnabled 1
Then press Return.  (You can disable it later by running it again, with a zero instead of the 1.)
Then start Disk Utility and select Debug > Show Every Partition.
That should show a Recovery HD, grayed-out, under your internal HD:

If you back up your mac before deleting your emails, Time Machine should back up your e-mails.
I never tried this so i'm not sure to find them in Time Machine. To browse in your backups simply click the Time Machine icon in your dock. In the right bar, you can select an backup. Than you can browse in finder, in your backkup.
EDIT: Just browsed and CT above was right. This topic might help you:

How do I move data on time machine from one external hard drive to another?

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. Turn Time Machine OFF in its preference pane while copying the volume.

  • How can I backup my MacBook Pro to an external hard drive

How can I backup my MacBook Pro to an external hard drive?

    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. WiebeTech
      4. Firewire Direct
      5. California Drives
      6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

This means that your NAS does not support the required encryption. Update your NAS to the latest firmware or ditch it and buy a Time Capsule (they are the most reliable when using TM).

My iTunes library is unstable.  I have two questions:
    1) How do I backup my iTunes library to an external drive?
    2) Why am I constatntly prompted to add my computer to iCloud when I have done so multiple times?
When opening iTunes, I receive he error message: "Please Sign In Again,  iTunes Match has encountered an error.  Please choose Sign Out and he Sign In from the iTunes Store menu and try again."
I tried downloading and installing/repairing the latest iTunes.  That did not correct the problem.
Also, I have sync'd to iCloud.  Every time I select iMatch from iTunes, I am prompted to Add This Computer to iCloud.  I have already done this multiple times.

When I make back-up by time-machine on external drive,my computer do the same on his Hard Drive...So I loose all of the capacity of the HD...I notice that only today but the problem is critical...The backups on the HD take 400 Go on my 500 Go SSD...

  • How can I have two different Time Machine backups in Lion?

I would like to have two separate external hard drive Time Machine backups of the same computer.  One to keep at home and one to take to work as a safety net.  Is this possible in Lion?  And if so, how do I do it?
I currently have an older EHD with my back up data on it, and a newer one that I have been backing up to for the past couple of weeks.  When I hook up the older EHD, Time Machine does not recognize the old backup data (ie. oldest backup and latest backup say "None").

    Hey mrssqueegy,
Thanks for the question. The feature you are searching for was introduced with OS X Mountain Lion. If your computer is compatible, I would definitely recommend upgrading to take advantage of this great feature:
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
OS X Mountain Lion and later let you:
    - Encrypt AirPort Time Capsule backups and network backup.
    - Select multiple backup destinations that Time Machine will rotate through for backup cycles.
    - Complete backups when the Mac is in Power Nap (on compatible Macs).
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Can't backup on my Time Machine installed on Time Capsule

I use to manage all my time machine backups on the Time Capsule.
From some days until now, I noticed that the Time Machine scheduled backups just abort in the middle of the process, after it scans the files to backup.
My Time Machine is working properly and therefore I can also access to my Time Capsule when I use it as as wireless hard drive.
When it is starting backup, Time Machine disk is mounted on my MAC.
Any ideas on what is going on?

  • How can I "Put Back" a time machine backup from the trash to my external hard drive?

Basically what happened was I accidentally put an older time machine backup from my external hard drive into the trash on my macbook. Since then, time machine has made new backups onto my external hard drive. How can I either "Put Back" or replace the deleted backup back into my hard drive?
Whenever I try to move it it says "A newer item named “Backups.backupdb” already exists in this location. Do you want to replace it with the older one you’re moving?" I click replace and after a few minutes of loading, it says "Cannot replace. An item named "" already exists."

As long as you don't delete the trash, the files should be recoverable.
I suspect using the Put Back command could take a long time, so be patient.
If your Time Machine backups are mixed with your daughter's backups you might want to buy a larger drive and move the Time Machine files to the new drive.
Regarding missing photos in iPhoto...There might be options to rebuild/recover that data from iPhoto rather than trying to revert to a Time Machine backup.
Check out this third party app, iPhoto Library Manager. It has a demo.
    http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/
    Options for a larger drive.
I like the Seagate USB 3.0 Backup plus drives. Works on USB 2.0 ports. They come formatted for PC but easy to format in Disk Utility.
I don't recommend Western Digital because of the boot problem with some of their drives.
    LaCie makes good drives.
All Mac formatted drives will cost more and it’s easy to reformat with Disk Utility. Do not use the software that comes with the drives. It’s recommended that you use Apple’s Disk Utility.
Prices vary but this gives you an idea of what you’ll find. As you notice the second and third TB is usually only $15 more per TB. Normally, you’ll find these prices but right now the 1T is more than the 2T
Seagate Backup Plus 1 TB USB 3.0 $85
Seagate Backup Plus 2 TB USB 3.0 $99
Seagate Backup Plus 3 TB USB 3.0 $115
I have seen the 3T on sale for $99.
Locally, Best Buy seems to have the best prices.

  • How can I delete all the Time Machine backups to make room for more? And how do I force the trash to empty?

I moved a bunch of my husband's files from his Macbook (which is dieing) to my iMac.  I created a user for him on my iMac so he'd be able to keep his stuff separate from mine.  All is working great except my Time Machine is now unable to backup.  The total of used space on my hard drive (including the recently added user's files) is about 420 GB.  The amount of capacity of my external hard drive is 999GB.  I think Time Machine failed because there was all of a sudden so much more data and a new full backup would be more than the unused capacity of the HD?  Regardless I don't need any old backups.  I have all my files and all his files.  So I moved all the backups from the external HD to the trash.  Apparently that's a no no.  I can't fully empty the trash now and that is making my iMac crazy slow.
    1) Can anyone tell me how to force the trash to empty?
    2) Is there a way to delete the whole external HD and start over with a new full backup via Time Machine?  In Disk Utility I try to erase the partition and get an error "Volume Erase failed with the error: Couldn't unmount disk." Then I try to Unmount it and get another "Unmount failed. The disk Backup iOmega could not be unmounted.  Make sure that all applications and files are closed on this disk." I turned off Time Machine and tried again but with the same errors.
The external HD is called iOmega.  It only connects to the iMac with USB.  Any help is much appreciated!!!!

    Try this instead:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. Select the backup volume from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)
    4. Click on the Erase button.
You will need to reconfigure Time Machine preferences for the backup.
FYI: Never remove Time Machine backup data except through the Time Machine application. If you aren't sure about using Time Machine then visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things related to Time Machine.
