How can I best use an external editor with iPhoto?

I want to use Pixelmator or Elements to edit photos in iPhoto, but I really don't want to export/import them every time. Is there an "edit with an external editor" option I haven't found?

Hope this helps:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

  • Using PSE13 as external editor with iPhoto w/MAC OS

Upgraded from PSE12 to 13 and now unable to use PSE13 as an external editor with iPhoto on a MAC OS V 10.9.  Have reinstalled and no change.  Preferences in 13 differ from help for older versions.

Are you sure you are choosing the correct file? In recent versions adobe has hidden the actual editor away in the Support Files folder in the PSE folder. The file at the top level is just an alias for the welcome screen. You want this file:

  • Re:  Leone's post May 2014 about how to best use an external drive with Aperture

I am trying to find Leone who had a great post May 2014 to Diane. I posted tho same message as a 'Reply' to the Leone/Diane posts but then was worried it would not show up since that was some time ago so I decided I should post it as new.  Apologies if it comes through twice.   I am having trouble as indicated below:
I found this response to the question about Aperture and external hard drives from last May.  I bought a WD My Book 4TB and need to back up photos I have in Aperture (many!) to free up space.  I am a photographer and need to be able to plug the external drive in as needed, pull a photo out from the WD and back into Aperture to work on it if needed.
I read your directions to Diane and have the external drive formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled).  I read the two ways you suggest to move part or all of my library to an external drive and still be able to use it in Aperture with all the metadata saved, as I need to continue to work with the images.  I am not completely clear about the advantage of the 'referenced' method but decided to go with the Split Library because it sounded like the Referenced method would still keep originals (and take space) in Aperture.  I'm not sure about this, but that was what I chose.
I have backed up my computer, formatted the drive then went to Aperture to begin.  I do the 'Export' and it shows the external drive it will go to but when I click 'OK', it says "EXPORT LIBRARY FAILED - Library could not be create because the file system of the destination volume is not supported."  I doubled checked to be sure the drive was Journaled which it was.  I did call WD and talk to them but they told me this was outside their area.
Also, in Aperture, I have my photos in Projects by yymmdd.  Is it possible to transfer Projects into the ext. drive without having to break them out of the Projects?
Any direction anyone might give would be greatly appreciated, Sandy

    Hi Sandy,
I suggest taking a week or two to get to know Aperture better before proceeding.  Aperture can do many things, and can do what you want.  It's important to be specific about what you want, however.  From what you've said, it appears that you don't yet know.

[1] A back-up is a copy of digital files stores on a separate device.  A back-up is recommended because drives fail, and humans make mistakes.  A back-up is not used to free up storage space.
[2] Aperture can be set up in many equally-usable ways.  The program files reside (almost always) on your system drive.  The data files can be anywhere you want them, as long as they are on locally-mounted drive(s).  The main data file is your Library.  The best place for it is on the drive that has the fastest throughput to your logic board.  This is, in nearly 100% of machines, the system drive.  But Aperture functions well with Libraries of secondary drives — internal or external — with sufficient throughput.  USB-3 and Thunderbolt I (& II) provide sufficient throughput for using an Aperture Library on a secondary drive.
Nearly all photographers will fill whatever storage space is available (making data is what photographers do).  The question is: what do you do when your Library no longer fits on your system drive?  (And remember, you should leave at least 10% (I recommend 20% for heavy users of Aperture) of your system drive free.)  The answer depends, primarily, on whether your computer is portable or fixed in location.
If fixed, just buy a more-than-large-enough secondary drive of USB-3 or faster throughput, mount it permanently, and move (using Finder) your Library to it.
If your computer is portable (and you can't increase the on-board storage), you have to select the best from several confusing alternatives:
    • Put your Library on an external drive with throughput at least as fast as USB-3
    — Pros:  Easy to maintain and back-up.
    — Cons:  Must have drive with you in order to use your Library.
    • Leave your Library on your system drive, but relocate your Images' Originals to an external drive.
    — Pros:  You can work on your Library without having the external drive available.
    — Cons:  You can't export (except Previews), Print, or make adjustments until your external drive is mounted.  Significantly more difficult to administer, especially importing and backing-up.
    • Leave your Library and and _some_ of your Images' Originals on your system drive, and relocate most of your Image's Originals to an external drive.
    — Pros: You can do any work on those Images whose Originals are stored in the Library regardless of where the external drive is.
    — Cons: Yet another level more difficult to administer.
If you are comfortable with the administrative overhead, the third set-up will be the most rewarding.  Keep all _current_ Images Originals inside your Library, and routinely relocate the Originals of Images no longer current to the external drive.
In no case is it recommended that you at any time remove from your Library an Image (not the Original — the Image in Aperture) that you expect to ever use again.

I'm a songwriter. I need simple chord progressions. How can I get started using GarageBand?

When you lauch GarageBand it will present you a Start up screen - If you select "New" you will see templates for projects to start from - "song writing" is a nice template for vocals with accompanyment.
For an example of doing simple chord progressions you may want to have a look at this thread:
Re: In GarageBand, is it possible to change the key at any given point in the timeline?
The "Help" menu has some easy to follow basic lessons to get you started. Lesson 1, 3, and 5 might be useful for you.

  • Using an external editor with Apple Photos

After upgrading to Os X 10.10.3 today and using the new Apple Photos app for the first time, I was very disappointed not to find a way to edit photos in an external editor, as I could do with iPhoto. Sure, I can export the image file, edit it in another program, save it, and then re-import it, but that is somewhat of a kludge IMO compared to the smooth way this function worked in iPhoto.  I'm happy with the expanded editing options available within Apple Photos, but some things simply can't be done within it. Please, Apple, make adding this capability a priority task for the first upgrade to Apple Photos! Or is it available already and I just missed it?
    Regards, Jim

In my case,  I open Photoshop Elements, then choose Open File.  I find the photo that I want to work with under "Photos".  When I am finished editing, I save the file to "Pictures" giving it a name I can remember.  Then I import it into the new version of iPhoto (called Photos) from "Pictures".
The Media Browser in the Media section of the Sidebar is very convenient to use the library in other apps, but it will not always pass the original Master file to the When you are using the Media Browser like this, you will get mixed results, depending on whether the photo already has been edited or not.
When I pass a photo to PSE using the "Photos" icon in the Media section to PSE
For an unedited photo, PSE will receive the original master file, not as copy, but the original in the Masters folder in the library.
For an edited photo it will receive an optimised version and not the original file, stored in "resources > modelressources" in your photos library.  As far as I can see, the photos in "modelressources" are the same pixel size, but have a higher JPEG compression than the originals in the Master folder.  The file size is slightly less.
So, for edited photos you may be using a lesser quality image file, when you access the library using the Media Browser.
Be careful, when you open unedited photos this way. With "Save as" in PSE you can write your edits directly back to the Masters folder and overwrite the original master file.
I just tried to edit an unedited photo this way in PSE:
That is how the Photo looked in Photos before editing:
After editing a frame in PSE 12 I am seeing this "Save As" dialog in PSE:
It will write back to the Photos library into the Masters folder.
After allowing PSE to overwrite file it received the file, I am seeing this, when I try to edit the version.  Photos is now using the replaced original file, that PSE wrote to the Masters folder.
I duplicated the photo in Photos before sending it to PSE, but since the duplicate is sharing the same original file with the first version, now bothe the first image and its unedited duplicate are both showing the frame added in PSE:

  • Why can't i use my external screen with messagecentre

I could not get the message centre in Mountain Lion working. Now I read that it will not work when you've got a second screen connected to the iMac. What for is this, will there be a solution for this soon?
And how can we ask Apple to change this?

I presume you are talking about the Messages app.
To start it off you need to list an Apple ID that you want to use with the iMessages Service.
This can then be used to send and receive iMessages from iOS devices or other Messages apps
The app can also use the older style iChat Screen Names and IDs and these can be added the same way they were in iChat.
The "iChat Side"  is the bit that does the Screen Sharing and it should cope with some one using two Displays.
What you have to remember is that two side by side displays may have to be shown on one 15" monitor and everything can look very small.

  • How can I set up an external harddrive with time machine that already has data on it without losing the data?

I have an external hard drive that I use to hold photos and other files on that no longer fit on my macbook. I also use the external hard drive for back ups set up with time machine. I don't believe I ever did anything to partition it, I've just always had separate folders (Photos, Music, etc) with one being called "Back Ups" (or Backups.backupdb) that my time machine back ups would automatically go into. Recently, I made the switch from my HDD in my macbook to a new SSD of the same size. I used the back ups on the external hard drive to restore all my content, which all worked out fine. My problem now is in using my external hard drive. When I plug it in, it no longer seems to be working with time machine. Also, I was organizing some files within the external hard drive, and when I dragged one into a folder, it took a while to load. Before, it was instantaneous moving a file already on the external hard drive to another location within it. Can anyone help me in getting the external hard drive to work with my new SSD? I don't want to delete any of the folders or back ups that are already on it, since that's the only place I have some of those files. Please let me know if you need anymore details. Thanks! (sorry if this is posted in the wrong forum)

First, she has to be logged in to the same iTunes account as she used on the old computer.
Second, when she plugs the iPhone in to iTunes, right click on the phone name and select transfer purchases.
Third, enter one contact and one calendar entry into the new computer's addressbook/calendar.
After that, she should be fine.

  • How can I plug in an external mic with my headphones?

I use my desktop to make phone calls alot using a headset, but with my MacBook I can connect my headphones ok but my mic doesnt wanna work when i plug it into the jack next to the headphone jack. Am i doin something wrong?

Your Mac does not have a microphone input, only a line-level input (in fact, no Mac has included a microphone input in quite a while). So you'll need 1) a self-powered microphone that outputs line level, 2) a USB microphone, or 3) an external audio device that supports microphone inputs, either a mixer that will give you line-level output or a USB audio input device. One possibility for a USB device that works for many people and that is relatively inexpensive (ca $40.00 US) the Griffin iMic. It works with any standard personal computer microphone.
    Hope this helps.

  • How can I best use iCloud with another cloud based server

Here is what I want to accomplish.  I have switched ISP's and wish to have all my email based in the cloud, so another switch of ISP is not so painful.  I have 2 accounts I monitor, iCloud for personal use, and another server for my website for business use.  I want to simply look at one mail box, that is iCloud that contains all email I route ... so, forward to the business server to Icloud and read iCloud from my mac, web browse, or ipad/cellphone.  So far OK.  The fly in the ointment is that I want to send emails with either my personal or business address from my mac or wherever, and can see no way to have both addresses available for sending, just the icloud based ones.
    Advice is wanted and appreciated.
    Thanks, Dan

You can use different accounts for each of your devices, but why?  Then they couldn't sync with each other (and the icloud account they are associated with).
But each device can only be associated with one icloud account, you can't have each connect to both accounts.  It seems you are trying to gain additional storage by using a second account.  To have both devices connecting to the same data and use more storage, you'll have to buy more.

  • How can i access my lacie external drive with os mountain lion

I have just upgradet my macbook pro from snow leopard to mountain lion, and now i can't restore my backed up files from my Lacie external drive.
When i try to connect to it through time machine or migration assistant i get the message:
"the version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported"
I have tried to enable all UAMs but i still can't connect.
I have browsed after other similar situations, but i can't seem to find any though i'm hardly the only one with this problem.

If the backup was made using time machine, you should be able to access any files you need or want manually using the finder. It may not be pretty, but it should work. I don't know why the migration assistant would be unable to access it though.
If you can't access the contents of the backup with the finder, then I would say your problem is a bit more serious.

  • How can I tell if my problem is with iPhoto or if the SD card ?

I'm trying to import photos from an SD card, and when I attach my camera (or insert the SD card - I've tried both ways),  iPhoto shows me thumbnails of the pictures, and tells me they are already imported.  But when I disconnect my camera, the photos aren't in iPhoto.  If I click on "Import Photos" nothing happens, although I get a message telling me to wait until the photos have finished importing, if I try to close iPhoto.
Is there a way to tell if my problem is with iPhoto, my iMac, or the SD card?

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • Can no longer use an external display in closed clamshell mode

    Hi,
I have this weird problem that just started couple days ago.
I own a MacBook Pro Early 2011 since March.
It's always hooked up to an external display and the MacBook Pro's LCD is turned off (closed clamshell mode).
Lately, if the MacBook Pro's LCD is turned off, the external display won't show anything.
But as soon as I open the lid, the external display will then mirror the MacBook Pro LCD.
If I close back the lid, the external display will get blank.
I also tried to change the display settings with no luck.
In other words, I can no longer use my external display with the MacBook Pro in closed clamshell mode.
I'm wondering if someone experienced this problem before.  Thanks for help.

    Hello sebastieng
Open both, your MBP connected to the external screen. Open Preferences click here on "Displays" and then make the external Window to the main window by dragging the bar (line?) on top of the laptop window to the external window, which makes the second window the main window.
If this does not help you may read this:
