How can I boot my (OS Lion) Macbook (using external drive) to run Leopard

I have recently installed Lion on my macbook. Previously, I had Snow Leopard.  During that time, I used an external hard drive to boot into Leopard to run some programs that didn't run on SL (Spring Cleaning, for example).
Today is the first time I tried to boot from the hard drive with Leopard on it since upgrading to Lion. Hitting Option during startup doesn't even show the external drive, and using the System Preferences/ Startup Disk method is equally useless.
I like Lion and don't feel like doing a total re-install just to have occasional access to an older OS, but I'd sure like to have it all!
  Any ideas for a workaround?

Verify that your external drive was formatted as GUID, it won't be bootable otherwise.

  • How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library

How can I Copy/backup photos in iphoto to external drives smaller than iPhoto library?  I have several 128 GB SSD's that I want to use to copy/backup all my iPhoto photographs for a permanent archive due to stability...but my iPhoto library is larger than the drives (about 234 GB) so it would require two of the SSD's...how best to get the original photos onto the SSD's?  I'm running Yosemite and iPhoto 9.6...thx.

Terrence - Can you explain what you mean by data loss?  In the iPhoto Library?  Or on the copy?
Larry - In what way is each photo "degraded"?  Quality?  Isn't it simply making an an exact copy, in this case a jpeg, as would happen if I dragged and dropped a different file type?  Is there another type of degradation?
I am working on trying to create a correct backup as well (per your instructions) but I wanted to use this as a "put in a fireproof safe" archive on very small SSD's that would never have a mechanical hard drive problem (we've lost a couple over time so aren't real confident in their staying power)...I also recognize that I I won't have newer photos in this archive group but at least it would have 98% of our photos in another off-site location...at least that's the thought...
Thx for your input and look forward to more in your reply...

  • How can i boot my iphone after erasing using findmyiphone

I accidentally erased my iphone using find my iphone and removed it also. now it says sim pin locked. how can i boot it again normally?

    Hello Mr.MacMac,
It sounds like you are trying to restore your device but you are seeing a message about the Sim Pin being locked. I recommend the information in the following article:
    iOS: Understanding the SIM PIN
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1316
You can enable, disable, or change your SIM PIN in the following locations:
iPhone: Settings > Phone > SIM PIN
iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular models): Settings > Cellular Data > SIM PIN
Note: Some carriers provide SIM cards with a default SIM PIN already enabled. Contact your carrier to find out what your default SIM PIN code is.
    Restoring
When restoring the device, you will need to unlock the SIM card to complete the restore process. The device and iTunes display the following prompts to notify you:
    To complete the restore process:
Disconnect the device from your computer.
    Tap Unlock on the device.
Enter the SIM PIN to unlock the SIM card.
Reconnect the device to your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,

  • How can I separate FCPX projects and events on external drive?

    Hi there!
I'm working on a Mac Pro with two drives. One drive contains the OSX and the second drive I use to store video media. I'm running FCPX 10.0.4.
The Mac Pro is used in a teaching environment (i.e. creative suite, FCPX, iMovie, etc).
Each tutor has their own user account for their own students (i.e. Fish account for one tutor, Mouse account for another tutor). Each user account is specially setup for the apps that that particular tutor teaches.
With FCP7 I setup individual capture folders on the second drive for each user account. The FCP7 capture scratch for each tutor was set to a specific folder on the capture drive...i.e.
    capture/fish/final_cut_pro_documents/
    or
    capture/mouse/final_cut_pro_documents/
The issue with FCPX is that if you capture to a second drive it saves the Events and Projects to the Root of the drive. This means that all captured/imported video footage from all of the user areas will be saved in one location and will be bunched together in the FCPX events and projects list.
    Workaround 1:
A workaround would be to capture all footage to the OSX bootable drive so that all Events and Projects are stored in the individual user Movies folder, but I'm wary of using one drive to run the OS and High Def video footage for drive speed issues.
    Workaround 2:
Another workaround would be to partition the capture drive into separate partitions for each tutor, but then one tutor may fill up their drive quicker than others and then I''d have to repartition the drive to allow for more space! (bearing in mind we have 17 Macs all setup in the same way!)
    Workaround 3:
I've also tried making symbolic links from each user Movies folder to a specific location on the capture drive, but no luck.
Does anyone know of a workaround which might work?
    With many thanks in advance,
    Lawrence

    Hi Tom,
Firstly, thank you for your reply.
From your experience, can you setup Event Manager X to automatically hide all events and projects except those edited on a specific user account...for all user accounts...or is this something a new student would have to do manually before starting a new project?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Lawrence

  • HD failed on iMac 7.1. How do I use external drive to run computer?

I have an iMac made in mid 2007. It is an Intel Duo Core processor. The hard drive has failed. Apple says I can use an external drive to run it. I have a installation disk for Snow Leopard. How can I install Snow Leopard onto the external disk given that the computer is unusable?

If no way to have an internal hard drive installed into your iMac, then you will need to purchase two good quality, large capacity FireWire 800 (fast data transfer connection) external hard drives.
FIreWire 800 drives will give you an operational speed close to the same speed as your iMac's internal hard drive.
One external hard drive will be used as your iMac's main working drive. The other drive is to be used to create either cloned, bootable backup drive or to be used with OS X Time Machine backup app.
To install OS X Snow Leopard onto an external hard drive, if your iMac's optical drive is still working, power up your iMac holding down the C key on the keyboard and immediately insert the install disc into the optical drive slot on the side of your iMac.
Your iMac should boot up to the system that is on the install disc.
Once you are in the Installer app, go up to the main menu bar and quit the installer.
Then on the main menu bar launch the Disk Utility app and format the external drive for Mac OS X Extended ( journaled ) format with a GUID partition scheme.
You can decide if you want one larger partition on break the drive down into more than one partition for data storage purposes or not.
Once the drive is formatted, quit Disk Utility, relaunch the OS X installer app and proceed, following the instructions to install OS X Snow Leopard onto your external drive.
Once installed, you'll be prompted to restart your iMac and it should automatically find where OS X is installed and boot up your Mac to OS X.
From there, you can go into OS X Preferences Panel and select the software update feature of OS X to update your OS X version to OS X 10.6.8 and all of your Apple installed apps.
In OS X System Prefrences panel under Startup disc icon, click the icon and set the startup disc for the external hard drive that shows your currently installed OS X system.
This OS X will know where OS X is always launched from and won't have to hunt for it when you always startup your Mac.
You will have to reinstall all your third party applications, too.
    Good Luck!

  • Can you boot off of your Macbook Pro hard drive from an iMac?

I have a Macbook Pro (Mid 2010) and a new iMac. Can I somehow use the iMac to boot off of my Macbooks hard drive?

I'm trying to run OSX off of my Macbook hard drive on my iMac. I want to target my Macbooks hard drive.

  • How can I specify a default directory on my external drive, for iPhone photos to be imported to on Macbook Air?

I use both a PC as well as my Macbook Air and when I sync my iPhone with my PC (I connect the phone to PC) my phone (or is it my computer)? knows to import my photos and videos to a specific directory/folder on my external hard drive (I am able to tell my PC which folder to import my photos and videos to). For example, it imports all photos and videos to the external drive and organises the photos and videos by date (it creates a separate folder for each date the photos/videos were taken; I had to tell my PC to import to the default directory (external drive) when I did this for the first time, and it now creates a new folder for each date which is useful for keeping photos organised, etc.
I'd like to be able to do the same thing, using my Macbook Air, i.e., when I connect my iPhone to the Macbook air, I want my Macbook Air to know to import my photos to my external hard drive; is this possible? I am not familiar with the photo programmes on the Macbook air, but to be honest, I don't want to use them for this; I just want my photos and videos on my iPhone to import to the same folder when I use my Macbook air to sync, as when I use my PC to sync  (I use my PC at work and have my Macbook at home). I'd like to be able to sync my phone when at home and not have to wait till I get to work, etc.
Many thanks for any help you can provide...

Yes there are many, but the question is why won't the new folder create on the drive?
    What format is it?

  • Mail - How can I set up a mailbox on an external drive?

I am using a 13 inch MacBook Pro for work, running OS X Yosemite (ver. 10.10.3).  I have a 4TB external drive attached, a portion of which I use for Time Machine and the rest is available for storage.  I use the mail application to handle all of my email accounts.  I currently store my email messages in mailboxes on my server.  However, we have limits on our work Exchange server.  I have a limited amount of storage on my MacBook Pro and a lot of email with a lot of large attachments.  I suspect that I will quickly fill my MacBook Pro storage.  So, I would like to create a mailbox on my external drive to which I will store these larger messages.  Can someone tell me if this is possible and if so how to do it?

You can select a folder in Mail and export the folder as an Apple mbox file. You will not be able to view these messages in Mail without having to import back into Mail.
    Select Mailbox
Under Mailbox in the Menu bar, select Export Mailbox...
If you want access, to these emails that is a bit trickier. Let me know and we can discuss options.

  • How can i get mynew mac mini to use the drive in my old mac pro

When I first got my new mac mini it dosen't have an internal drive.   So I hooked it up on the network and fire wire.  I could use the superdrive in the mac pro just fine  both itunes and the dvd player worked as they would with a internal drive.   But now a couple of upgrade down loads later not so much.  yes I can connect with screen share and can get the dvd player to play dvd's but still can't get itunes to use the superdrive.  Iht exect disk icon in the apple menue bar use to open and close the super drive but now it reads "no disk" How can I get my mac mini to automaticly use the superdrive when i turn on the mac pro.
I've done all the easy things changing the order of start up and share settings and i sware it did work ok when i first hooked it up.

    http://www.totalapps.net/mac/remote-disc-sharing-when-the-superdrive-doesn’t-wor k-2/
Mind you, booting off the external optical drive of another computer may not be practical because of the different operating system limitations of the computers.   I would just purchase an external optical drive from http://www.macsales.com/ if you find it doesn't work.

  • How can I retrieve the password hint of an external drive encrypted with FileVault 2?

    Hi,
I'm running on 10.7.3, I have an external HDD that is fully encrypted with FileVault 2.  When encrypting an external drive, FileVault 2 doesn't provide a recovery key, but it gives you the opportunity to give a hint at the time you enter the password.  My question is: how can I get this hint?
I'm asking because I can't mount the drive anymore.  I keep getting prompted to enter the password, and although I believe I'm sure what the password is, it keeps getting refused.  The weird thing is that I have never been asked this password because the drive has always been automatically mounted after reboots, I guess because the password was in my Keychain.  I have no idea why it no longer auto-mounts and none of the passwords I tried worked.
In Disk Utility, when I tried to "verify" the locked volume, Disk Utility logs an error in system.log with no other user visible action.  I filed a bug with Apple about this (#11286871) but I'm still waiting to hear back from them.  The error logged is:

Even if you succeed with the difficult instructions to do this, if you are running Mavericks (10.9.x) on your Mac, count on it to start over with a whole new backup of your Mac, so you will have two separate backup files for the Mac on the Time Capsule.
Realistically, few of us ever need to go back months or years to retrieve a file from Time Machine. My recommendation would be to keep the external hard drive around for a few months until you have a good backup history established for the Mac....and then delete the backups from the drive and use it as a spare hard drive.

  • How can I move entire ITunes library to an external drive

How can I move the entire file to a new external drive & still add new downloads & use from the external G: drive?
Or can't this be done - I have the 80G Ipod & the files take up so much space that I want to move it to the new G: drive.
I thought I had it figured out but nothing would play from the G drive, so I had to restore everything back to the C: drive.
    Thanks for any advice

This is actually the 5G iPod forum, not the iTunes folder.
However, To move your iTunes music...
    1 Quit iTunes.
2 Move the entire iTunes folder including music to the external drive.
3 Restart iTunes holding the Shift key in Windows, Option key in Mac.
4 iTunes will ask to Create new library or Choose existing library. Select Choose existing library and select the library in the folder you just moved.
5 Move the old iTunes folder to the trash but do not empty it.
6 Restart iTunes normally and verify the songs work. If they do, empty the trash.

  • Can you boot with Windows XP from an external drive?

Just curious really. If you have Windows XP on a bootable external drive, I know other PCs can boot from it, but can a Mac?

On a G5 or other PPC Mac, the answer is no (unless you count running XP with VirtualPC). On the Intel Macs, it's a different story, although I have no idea if they support booting from an external drive with Boot Camp.

You really should not remove any Time Machine backups using that or any other method.
