How can I change the way mail delete works?

Before we "upgraded" to Mountain Lion, if I deleted a message, it would automatically go to the next message, no matter what. Now if I mark a message as unread, then go to the next message, then decide to delete that, it would automatically go to the next (third) message in the list. Now, after deleting the second message, it pops up to the first message instead of going to the third. It does this if the third message is read or unread, no difference. How can I stop this. It is MOST aggravating.
BTW, it is saying my "product" is a macbook with OS 10.6.8, but it really 10.8.3

I've recently had an upgrade to 10.8.5 and now have this problem too.
The behaviour seems to be:
I select an email, part way through my inbox, read it and delete / file it.
If there is an unread email above the just deleted one (adjacent or way above and off the page) then the next message shown will be the one above the one I moved.
If there is no unread email above then the next message shown will be the one below.
I usually sort in date (oldest up) and work down from some point to the recent ones. Occasionally I'll try and work through all the mail from a given sender. This change in behaviour makes both these use cases hard work.
If I'm trying to deal with the easy mails in a short gap this slows me down. I know the unread ones are there, I don't need mail to be semi-smart at me.
I've tried with com.apple.mail IgnoreSortOrderWhenSelectingAfterDelete set to zero and to one and the behaviour is the same. Anyone know of a switch to get the simple "working through a list in logical order" behaviour back?

Hi, fromsouth, and thank you for your reply. When I go to store, there is no place that says "sign out" so I can't do this. My old email is showing, and when I click on it I am asked for my password. I tried my old password that I used with that email, but was told it was incorrect. This is so frustrating! I can't do any ordering on my iPad until this problem is solved. Thanks again.

To change your default mail account, you just have to change the mail accounts order in the Mail sidebar. First of all, if you don't see your mailboxes under "Inbox" (at the top of the sidebar), press the arrow, and your mail accounts will appear.
Now, you just have to drag the mail account you want by default to the first position

You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.

How can I change the background colour when working on a doc in full screen view (pages)?

Recently I have been working on docs without the distraction of having to see my desktop around my page file by using the full screen view in pages. I do find the contrast to an all black screen too harsh though and it makes my eyes more tired than seeing the clutter of my desktop around the page. Is there any way I can change the background colour?

When you are in Full screen mode move the cursor up to the top to show the Format bar. Then look to the far right. There you'll see Background and a rectangle. Click on the rectangle and change the colour.

I often think I am typing in another window but I'm actually typing while Mail.app is selected. When I discover this, I often (without really thinking) start whacking the delete key. When I whack the delete key, of course, a message is moved to the trash. So, without really thinking about it, I delete three to six messages. Go ahead -- call me stupid. But...
If delete is not used to delete files in the Finder, then why is it used to delete files in Mail?
One group suggested making customer keyboard macros. Sounded like a plausible solution. I could make a customer keyboard macro so that delete did nothing (or something benign) and make command-delete delete the message. Alas, using the Apple => System Preferences => Keyboard => Keyboard Shortcuts => Application Shortcuts gave me no Joy because it won't let me do either of those. When I try to enter either delete or command-delete into the "Keyboard Shortcut" box, it just beeps at me.
Does anyone here have a suggestion?

p.s. I can get the deleted messages back using Undo (repeatedly) but I think that is new with Lion. So life isn't tragic but it still is an interface that I'd like to change if I could.

You can define your own custom keystrokes in System Preferences -> Keyboard. I'm not 100% sure that this blocks the old keystroke, though, and am posting from my iPad and can't check that at the moment.

How do I change the way Mail notifies me of new mail? My notifier appears and just stays on the screen until I acknowledge it.

A while back I changed a setting in Mail pertaining to notification of a new email arrival. The banner stays locked on the screen until I take an action. It used to display and then disappear soon afterward. I can't remember how I adjusted the setting, or even where the settings for notifier are. Can someone help?
