How can I change where my files are backed up to when changing to iOS 5?

Hi,
I have a Windows PC with two hard drives, one being an SSD and another being a regular hard drive.  I use the regular hard drive to store music, movies, media, all of that good stuff; I use the SSD to store the operating system and a few video games in order for better performance.  My question is, why, when I try to change my iPod to iOS 5, does it automatically back up to my SSD (C:) drive?  Is there any way that I can change the location to which my files are backed up?  I have plenty of space on my second hard drive, but I can't find anywhere in iTunes where there is an option to change this.
Thanks!

I have very little space left on the hard drive on my macbook, on my storage report it says "other" is taking up more than two thirds of the space on the hardrive. How can I identify what these files are?

    Hello,
There is free software you can download that gives you a graphical image of what files are used on your hard drive. http://www.derlien.com/
This may help you clean down your hard drive for more space.
    Best of luck

  • How do you know where your files are if you save them in the wrong place?

I have tons of video files for example.
I want to watch the video I downloaded off the net about airplanes.
I type in airplanes in spotlight, and many come up.
    they are quicktime files.
but when I go to quicktime and try to delete by clicking on files, it does not
show me comprehensively where these files are stored.
Similarly, If i type in Geese, in spotlight, the same thing happens.
But geese, and airplanes are not near each other. Which brings me to wonder.
How many videos do I have stored in here anyway??
How do I find ALL my videos? And erase what I need to and store what I need to away in thier proper place?
    I hope that makes sense.

Use the custom Find window, AKA "Smart Folder". See in the Finder menubar under the "File" menu the selection "New Smart Folder".
Typically files have an "extension", or a filename suffix that identifies what kind of file it is. Quicktime movies might have a ",mov" suffix, so type the suffix in the Smart Window search field or tell it to search "Kind" as "Movies".
When you get the window full of found files, select the ones you want to move and drag them to the "Movies" folder.

  • How can I tell where a file will be saved?

I realize that sounds a bit slow, but I'm working on a project with many differen files (Keynote, iBooks, Pages, etc.). I make ever effort to work from one external drive, and usually succeed, but occasionally I grab a file from one of the backup drives. And when I do, it gets saved to that backup drive rather than the working drive. Thus my caution, and a desire to be able to double-check where a file's being saved.
I can't figure out how to do that. When I want to check I have to search the recent file and see where it's located using the path indicator in Finder.
I hope I've missed something simple.
    Thanks

If you open a file from another drive, then that will be its save location unless you Duplicate and save or use Save As. So, if you open, edit, then save, it will save to the exact same location it was in.
If you Duplicate, then Save (or Save As), it will present the file save dialog to pick the location and name.
If you don't want to edit the files on the backup drive, you should lock them so you cannot save over them. That will force the system to tell you it cannot be written and choose another location.
There is nothing that will ask you for a destination every time you do a plain save. That would drive everybody nuts.
If the backup drive you are using supports versions under OS X, then you can lock the originals.
Or, you can lock them in the Finder. Get Info, and check the lock checkbox. In Lion, all files would auto-lock, but everyone complained about how terrible that was, so it is now gone in Mountain Lion. Sounds like something you could use.

  • How can I determine which programs/files are using disc space?

    A question for the professionals:
What program on my MacBook Pro can I run to determine which programs and files are taking up the percentage of disc space?  I am running at 72 gb, which is great, but I need to know what is using up the rest of it.  Thank you in advance to any helpful solutions.

  • Can you direct where .cfa files are stored during the creation of a project?

    Hi,
I have two hard drives connected to my computer. My primary drive is a 128gb SSD drive. I attempt to keep only installed programs on that drive. My second drive is a 2TB device that I use to keep all the working files and everything else. When I created a recent video project I thought that I was keeping all the files for that project on the 2TB drive, but after saving the project the first time I realized that all the CFA and PEK files and probably others, were being saved on to the 128GB SSD drive.
How do I keep that from happening again?  I would like to keep everything related to a video project in a single folder so that I can delete everything  when the project is done, and therefore I can keep my computer clean of all the junk that is no longer needed.

  • How can i be sure my photos are backed up to my time capsule

My MacBook Air is backing up to my Time Capsule 3T, but how can I double check that all of my photos are being backed up?

Thanks for clarifying that you are using Time Machine and iPhoto in regard to your questions.
There are a number of other applications that will back up your Mac to the Time Capsule.....Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper and Chronosync to name just a few. That is why we were asking for more information.
As far as Time Machine and iPhoto are concerned, it is unfortunate that a few years ago,  Apple removed the feature which would allow you to "browse" the images in your Time Machine backups in the iPhoto Library. If you want to restore any images from your Time Machine backups, you must restore the entire iPhoto Library then use iPhoto to view the images that you want.
You can get a good idea of whether your iPhoto Library backups are good by comparing the size of the iPhoto Library in your Pictures folder to the size of the iPhoto Library in your Time Machine backups.  If the size is the same, then you know that everything is being backed up by Time Machine.
To do this, click the "smiley face" Finder icon at the lower left of the Mac's screen on the dock
    Open the Pictures folder
Click once on the iPhoto Library to highlight it
Click the "gear" icon at the top of the window
    Click Get Info
Note the size of the iPhoto Library
Now open Time Machine and choose a date from the past from the timeline on the right side of the screen.
Navigate to the iPhoto Library in the Pictures folder
Double click the iPhoto Library and note the size of the library
If the library is being backed up, the size of the library on your Mac and in the Time Machine backups will be the same.

  • My phone has blue screen od death due to ios7 malfunction there for in usable how can i see if my contacts are backed up to icloud. it will not let me log on

i have the blue scrren of death on my iphone 4s due to  the ios7 software malfunction which i am not happpy about. my icloud will not let me log into it which s making e frustrated. i am reciving a new phone but i am worried about losing my contacts how can i see if i can retrevive them once i get a new apple devce please someone help me.

Go to icloud.com from your computer and sign into your account.  Any iCloud data you see there will sync to your new phone when you sign into your account.
Also, if you have a recent backup of your phone, restore that backup to your new phone when you get it to transfer your data, settings, apps and other purchased media.  More details here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2109.

  • Problems changing where music files are stored

I moved my music files to an external hard drive. I am now trying to get itunes to recognize the new location of my files. Under 'advanced' I can change my iTunes music folder location, but there is no "OK" button at the bottom. Whenever I close the window, my itunes music folder location reverts back to "C:documents and settings". Any suggestions? Thanks

  • Why is the sparse bundle so much smaller than the backed up computer...can I be confident all files are backed up?

    Hey gang,
iphoto folder became big so I have moved it to an external drive. I made sure the external disk is not excluded from timemachine backup in tm preferences. Backup seemed to take forever (it actually said "preparing for backup" the whole time with a spinning progress bar) ie 24 hours and still the same pogress bar.
i stopped the process as i had no confidence anything was actually happening
When i open up time machine, an earlier version of my imac is there, but the external drive is kind of greyed and i cannot access it.
When  I check the sparse bundle size, it is under 200 gb, when my imac is around 600 gb, 900 with the external drive.
Why is the sparse bundle so small relative to the imac? are there hidden data files outside of the sparse bundle? when checking the preferences, it states total included is 921 gb...yet that is not reflected in the sparse bundle size.
I want to be sure iphoto is actually backed up before deleting it from my imac.
    thanks anyone!

I am wondering whether the "processing" progress bar was due to the time capsule freeing up space for the additional data on the new external drive. When I cancelled it, available space on the tc incresed from 200 to 500 gb.
Yes, quite possibly.  Especially on Leopard and Snow Leopard, that process on network backups is excruciatingly repetitive and slow.    It's improved greatly in Lion and later, but still isn't exactly quick.
The backup complete, i checked the contents of the backed up version of the external drive, and the iphoto folder was the same size as original, so I have confidence that iphoto is backed up. Now I could delete the iphoto from the imac, freeing up tons of space.
    Yay!
Still curious why the imac sparsebundle is only 160gb, while my macbook pro sparsebundle is about 700 gb...as though they are inversely named from the computers they back up.
Oh, I didn't realize you had two Macs backing-up to the TC.  Which one is the external HD connected to?
Unless you've specifically excluded things, after the initial backup, the sparse bundle should be nearly the size of the data it's backing-up (TM does exclude some things like system work files, most caches and logs, and trash, so the backups are a few GBs smaller).  As you do more backups, of course, it will grow.
So please clarify how much data is on each drive, Mac, and sparse bundle.
Also, the 2tb time capsule has 258 gb of 1.8 tb available....am I to suppose that there is hidden backup data not in the sparse bundles?
Sparse bundles are odd critters.  They don't automatically shrink when things are deleted from them.  Instead, the vacated space is used for new files until it's full, then it begins to grow again.  Time Machine will "compact" them when necessary, to reclaim the empty space, but doesn't take the time to do it unless it's out of room.
You can do that manually if you want, per the pink box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #12.

  • How can I be sure my notes are backed up from my IPAD?

I have set my ipad to automatically back up all my apps to the icloud. While I can view the saved content of other apps (calendar, contacts) at www.icloud.com, There is no content online that reflects the notes files that exist on my IPAD. Are they being backed up?  thank you!

In a browser (and unfortunately Safari on iOS - your iPad won't work) go to www.icloud.com and login in using your appleID. You should see an icon for Notes (yellow pad like you have on the iPad). Click on that and any notes you have on the iPad should appear there.
When you are in Notes on the iPad creating a note, tap the Account button (upper left) and select iCloud to store the note in iCloud (if you are using additional account, such as Gmail, it will show up as well). A note, for syncing purposes, can only be synched to one account. If youare in the All Notes view adn create a note, it should store it in whichever youhave selected as the default (Settings app > Notes > Default Account). Sounds like Comcast, in your case.
For backup purposes, you should be set, I think, already.
    Clear as mud?
