How can I combine itunes libraries for a shared music setup?

I wanted multiple users on my computer to share the same itunes music folder and library. I put an itunes folder (with an itunes music folder and library data file inside the itunes folder) into the computer's shared folder. I set each users preferences to use the new shared music folder and copy their music to the new folder.I also used the option key on startup of itunes to point each user's itunes to the new shared library.
I'm stumped on how to do one final thing: Is there a way for me to combine everyone's existing library data into the new shared library? In other words, I want all the folders that each user already created to be combined into the new library that everyone sees.

I tried that first, but then you are just replacing one library data file with another, you're not combining them. But I just figured it out myself so my apologies for posting prematurely -- There is an 'add to library' choice under the file menu. You navigate to your original itunes music folder, choose it, and the library information associated with those songs was added to the new shared itunes music folder that my itunes app is now set up to use. Fortunately, I hadn't trashed the original music folder yet.

  • How can I merge iTune libraries?

I have a MacBook Pro and a Mac Pro tower. Each has iTunes 10. Each computer has its own iTunes music library. There is about 70 % overlap of music. How can I merge the libraries so they are the same on each computer? Many thanks for any help.

  • How do I switch Itunes Libraries without losing my music?

The majority of my music is on my old, slow computer and this is where I initially synced my Iphone 5s, but my primary computer (laptop) has some music and I would like to download music from this computer in the future. I can't get the music from my laptop to my Iphone without Itunes prompting a message that says that my music from the other computer will be deleted. I know that I can transfer the music to the other computer via usb external storage devices and this is what I plan to do now, but it is a pain and in the future I would like to be able to get music from my laptop. Is there any way to switch Itunes libraries without deleting my music? Any information would be appreciated.

ugghh thats so obnoxious I dont know why Apple made it like this it used to be so easy to transfer music.. so does this mean that I'm going to have to delete al of my music from my old computer and then redownload it?

  • How Do I Combine iTunes Libraries?  - I just need the content (not playlists, etc.)

I have two very large iTunes libraries that I'd like to combine into one.
To complicate the issue, the "old" library is larger because I had more space on an external drive at the time.  The "new" library (the one I want to add to) is essentially a subset of the old library and I'd like to keep it as my main library.
So, how can I bring over the music from my "old" library into my "new" library?
And, is it possible to prevent it from creating duplicate songs?
To help explain the issue further, I have about 29,000 songs in my "main" library.  I have about 40,000 songs (including those 29,000 songs) in my "old" library.  How can I get those 11,000 songs into my "main" library.
THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ALL THE HELP!!

Quick question:  Will this result in creating duplicates?
Probably not. If the song is already in iTunes, it shouldn't add them again (but never say never).
If it doesn't add them again, it'll put them in a folder named Not added to iTunes (or something like this) in the Automatically add to iTunes folder. Does this with anythoing you put in there that is not added to iTunes.
You can try with a few dozen songs (that are already in iTunes) and see what happens.
Does't matter if iTunes is open or closed but nothing will happen with the songs inAutomatically add to iTunes folder until you open iTunes.

  • How can i stop iTunes 7 for Windows from opening automatically whenever I browse my Music Folder in Windows?

Whenever I'm browsing through my files on my PC, if I open the iTunes folder inside my music folder, iTunes automatically launches.  If I close iTunes without browsing away from this folder, it simply re-opens itself.
edit:  I have no Apple devices currently connected to the computer and WiFi Sync is disabled.
How can I stop this behaviour?

iTunes app on the iPhone is for purchasing music.
The fact the iPhone starts playing when connected to your car stereo is a function of your car bluetooth system.
Consult your car dealer/bluetooth system manual.
I have attempted to delete all music from the device (so there would be nothing to play), but 1 song remains in the iphone memory and I have been unable to delete that song.
Connect the iPhone to computer and select it in iTunes.
Click the Music tab and uncheck Sync music.
Then click Apply at lower right of iTunes.

  • How can you tell iTunes 7 to ignore other music folders causing duplicates

I just built a new PC and my iTunes library is on a 250 gig disk along with many other folders with music (drum loops, systems sounds, sample content, etc) that I don't want showing up in my iTunes library. Many of the folders contain backups of various thumb drives so there are identical songs in multiple directories showing up as duplicates in iTunes.
Preferences shows my library in a single location.... anyone know how to restrict iTunes to only using this location ? I don't remember hitting an "import my entire hard disk" button, but I may have. I can rip out and re-install if needed, but I don't want iTunes to remember all thge other folders outside of it's home directory... did i miss something really simple ?
Help ! I have about 1000 duplicate songs, some with 3 or 4 copies that reside in the portable media backup directories !

To do this, in iTunes go to Edit>Preferences>Advanced Tab>General Tab and then uncheck the "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized" box.
That has nothing to do with iTunes looking for music on your computer.
Keep iTunes music folder organized will create a folder hierarchy of artist and album names that contains all relevant audio files with the correct track names and order.
When you run iTunes for the first time (only), it asks to search your computer for music.
After the first time, the ONLY music that will get added to iTunes is the music you add. iTunes does not add music based on what you put in folders. It does not "watch" to see if anything is added to a folder.
If you do not want music copied to the iTunes music folder when adding to library, (and you want the music in your own folders somewhere else), set it in the prefs.

  • How can I run iTunes to manage my iPod music and still manage my iPhone / iPad?

Help!  I ditched iTunes 11 on my desktop PC a year ago or so, and reverted to 10.7, because of the crazy decision Apple made to remove "Composer" as a category, thereby making iTunes useless for anyone with a classical music collection.
That is painful, because 10.7 doesn't allow me to upgrade my iPhone Apps.  But at least I have my music...
However, last week I bought an iPad Air.  When I connected it to my iTunes 10.7 I was given short shrift.  IOS 7 will only talk to iTunes 11.
I hit on what I thought was an ingenious solution.  I loaded iTunes 11 onto my laptop PC.  I thought I would then be able to transfer my iPhone's affections (and apps) to the laptop, and then connect the iPad to the laptop too.  OK, so I had no option but to "upgrade" my iPhone to IOS 7.
So now I find that my desktop (iTunes 10.7) can talk to neither my iPhone nor my iPad.
My iPhone will connect to the laptop, but cannot establish any app linkage.  My iPad remains unused.
One of the things I used to love about Apple products was that everything just WORKED.  Please can someone suggest a way forward for me.  Has iTunes 11 been fixed to deal with Composers, so I can upgrade to it?  I can't copy my entire music database to my laptop because the disk is not big enough.  Solutions eagerly awaited!

Thanks for the reply, but I need a way forward.  Here are the options I can envisage and I would find it really helpful to have their feasibility commented on - or better options suggested.
    1) My ideal solution.  I sever my iPhone's connection to my desktop system so that I can run iTunes 11 on my laptop and sync iPhone and iPad to that.  Problem: I don't know how to sync the iPhone to the laptop.
    2) Upgrade my desktop to iTunes 11, completely destroying my classical music collection's backup on my 120GB iPod classic.  This is OK so long as I never need to reload the iPod.
    3) is there a way I can somehow freeze my iTunes 10.7 on my desktop and then upgrade to iTunes 11?  That would also be an ideal outcome, because I don't add new music to my iPod because it's full.
    Any suggestions warmly welcomed!

  • How can I combine multiple listings for same genre on iTunes 11?

When I downloaded the newest iTunes version 11, I suddenly had multiple listings for the same genre. I literally have 63 genre listings for "Trance"; 4 listings for "Hip-Hop/Rap" and a few others. There was obviously not a problem with the old iTunes version as they were all grouped together. I do get music from several sources but I have no idea how to combine all my "Trance" listings into one. It takes longer to scroll through the "Trance" genres than the rest of my genres combined. I tried to individually change one the "Hip-Hop/Rap" listings by using the "Get Info" tab and typing in the genre until iTunes can autofill the rest but the problem remains. Any ideas how to combine all these into one genre without compromising the genre name? Thanks
Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 Snow Leopard

I believe the closest you can come is look at your songs in Songs.  There you can sort by albums.
The album view does not contain a list view any longer.

  • How do i combine iTunes libraries ? from old Windows machine to my Mac?

Hi there...I have an expiring Windows machine where my kids first sync'd their iPods....That machine is dying and i want to bring those songs (hundreds!) to my Mac computer....But I already have lots of music on my Mac....every time my kids have tried connecting their iPods to the Mac it tells them that it will erase their music and install the music I have on the Mac....So...is there a way for me to add the music from the Windows machine to my Mac library? Or...since they each have an account on the Mac...can each account have its own iTunes where they could bring in their music? that way they could at least save the songs they have in their iPods. i know the music will not be transferred from the iPod to the Mac but I have backup diskettes I made on the windows machine. Can i use those? I am hoping I do not lose all that music ($$$)

I received an iPad and my daughter created an iTunes account. The settings were not to my liking so I created a new account; however, my daughter had already added my iTunes gift card to the old account. Is there a way to combine accounts and get back my iTunes gift card?

  • After HD crash, restoring to new HD. Library files missing or corrupt. How can I get iTunes 10 to see my music

The hard drive on my fairly new HP Pavilion desktop died hard on boot-up. HP replaced the drive the next day.  Used the Recovery Disks and got the unit up and running. I have been using Memeo Premium Backup and never did get any error messages during backup.  When I went to restore the data, much of it is missing or corrupt. In the Restore data on the backup drive, I can see many folders but only a few have data.  I opened a ticket with Memeo and after they made a few useless comments, they closed the ticket.
Fortunately, most of my iTunes data (folders and files) were restored in-tact.  The exceptions were the library files, which are missing. The library files in the Previous Itunes Library folder were corrupted.  I installed iTunes 10, but there are no songs, podcasts, etc, in it.  I have tried every article in the knowledgebase and tried to fix the ITL and XML files, but it is hopeless. Also, when iTunes is running, at the top it shows .iTunes Preferences.plist.  So, I have a disaster and about 10 gb of music going nowhere.  Any ideas?  I would really appreciate any help I can get.
    Brad

They are all mostly the same size at around 6MB but there are a couple that are very large 55MB (including the 30 tmp file I mentioned above.  There is also one around 7KB).  I tried renaming the most recent (as of 8:30PM last night)  tmp file as iTunes Library.itl but when I launch iTunes, I get the "The file 'iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes" popup.
But when I go into a directory I created to get the most recent itl file I've been saving as a backup and copy it into the iTunes directory to replace the one that I tried to make with the tmp file, and launch iTunes, my whole library loads with no problem.
However, if history repeats itself, this will work for at most a couple of days before I have to copy the saved itl file back into the iTunes directory.

  • How can i format itunes so that all my music has no gaps when scrolling down from artist to artist

all i want to do is format my itunes so that it doesnt have gaps between artists but just me more like a grid like it used to be.  i started using my old ipod again and this is driving me nuts because it makes it hard to organize music. i'm sure there must be some simple button on itunes to reformat things so that its just more of a grid.

Ctrl+J brings up an overlay called View Options. Try tweaking the settings there to see if you can find what you're after.
