How can I configure Home Sharing to work through a consumer VPN service?

I recently purchased a year subscription to a VPN service know as Private Intenet Access (PIA). With this VPN executable program connected to it's servers, my data is "filtered" through it behind the router. The router IS NOT configure with the vpn so I can controll which devices use the VPN. Addiotionally, if I want I can configure the VPN as a proxy instead of just running the program ( i would use the proxy for mobile devices).
My question is this: Is there an efficient way to configure iTunes and/or Apple TV3 in order to be able to use PIA while home sharing. I notice, often times that home sharing on the Apple TV will not read the Windows maching that has home sharing enabled through iTunes. But other machines work fine. Sometimes, depending on the "order" of the networks I connect to home sharing will work from the particular machine.
for example:
I can connect to the internet if I connect to my wifi and then enable the VPN (PIA) but cannot home share. However, if I connect to PIA then connect to the Wifi, it will work witout an issue.
The real issue is that when the Apple TV and pr PC go to sleep these connecting can wake up connecting in a different order.
I can only think to perhaps manually enter in the proxy info supplied by PIA to Apple TV. But there are not real instructions on how to do so.
I know this question is broad and scattered, but I am hoping that someone out there has had or having the same issue with some kind of resolution.
I've chatted online with PIA reps and they aren't entirely Apple savy. So here I am.
Any help in the right direction is greatly appreciated!!
-Cheers

  • How can i get home sharing to work, how can i get home sharing to work

When I sign into my Apple ID on multiple computers for home sharing, the icon on the left hand side in itunes disappears after I click done. I have tried to redownload itunes, restart my computer, basically anything the internet said but nothing helped. Helpp please!!

    Gino Cerullo,
Thanks for your response. I tried all that myself. In fact, last night, it all worked fine on all users. This morning, no Home Sharing would show up. It is really weird because some setting must have changed, but I did not knowingly changed anything, and now all the obvious fixes don't work. In fact, if I turn off Home Sharing and turn it back on, then it comes up only until I hit the "done" button on the set up page and then it goes away from the left hand column again. The ADVANCED drop down tab says it is on, but it is not there.
    Thanks anyway.

  • How can I use home sharing between our iphones (create playlists from both accounts at once)

How can I use home sharing between our iphones, so that we can create playlists with songs from both of our libraries?  We share a Macbook Pro (separate accounts) and each have the new iphone, but when I have my iphone and try to create a new playlist, I can only grab songs from one account.  Is there a way to create a playlist using both accounts since we are sharing?
Does it have to be created within iTunes first on our Mac?

The short answer: because Home Sharing isn't designed for sharing apps, and apps aren't designed to be shared.
The longer answer:  Think of it like this...
You download some music in iTunes.  With Home Sharing, another user can listen to it by streaming it over the network.  But the data itself is on your computer.  If you turn off the computer or take it off the network, the other user can't access it.
But if you send another user the app, they aren't just streaming the data- they installed it on their iOS device.  Because they weren't the one that purchased it, such a transfer could easily be considered "piracy" or "stealing," and nobody likes that (least of all, Apple).
When iTunes sees this app, it obviously recognized it, as if saying, "Hey, how did you get this app on your device, if I have no record of you purchasing/downloading it from the iTunes store?"

  • On iTunes 11, how can I access home sharing if the music is from a CD? Is there any way I can download these songs if (A) I no longer have the CD, or (B) I do not want to pay $25 a year for iTunes Match?

On iTunes 11, how can I access home sharing if the music is from a CD on a different computer using Home Sharing? Is there any way I can download these songs if (A) I no longer have the CD, or (B) I do not want to pay $25 a year for iTunes Match?

Yes, you can copy songs that you ripped from a CD to your Home Sharing computer.
Turn on Home Sharing first on both computers.  To do that, go to File > Home Sharing > Turn on Home Sharing.  Enter your Apple ID and password.
Now go to your computer that you want to copy the songs to and connect to your Home Share.  You can do that by clicking on the popover button located at the left top corner right below the play control buttons.  Click on it and scroll to the bottom until you see your Home Share and select it.
Go to Music in your Home Share.  Select the songs that you want to copy in your Home Share and click Import at the bottom right corner.

  • Can't get Home Sharing to work with ATV, v7.0.3 and iTunes 12.1.0.50

I can't get Home Sharing to work. I'm looking at my MacBook screen and iTunes says Home Sharing is On. On Apple TV, it says Turn On Home Sharing in iTunes. Both are using the same Apple ID and password (signed out and signed back in manually on both). I have tried the following: Signing out of and into Home Sharing on Apple TV and iTunes, closing iTunes and restarting the MacBook, restarting and restoring Apple TV to factory settings, restarting my router, all possible iterations of the aforementioned. Nothing seems to work. Also tried renaming my computer in preferences/sharing.
    Any new ideas?

Only have one network; wireless. On it's own, the MacBook can use wifi to surf the net and Apple TV can watch movie previews from Apple via wifi.
It did work about two months ago. I haven't used it since then for home sharing but have used the Apple TV on its own.
I read the Troubleshooting page on Apple Support. It involves turning various things on and off, which I did

    HI,
I think u need not configure anyting new for this, you can use the existing Business Tran. Type K and rename it as Vendor Advance for separate identity. You can do the normal FBCJ posting.
But doing this you will not have separate identity for the Advances paid.

  • How can I activate home sharing in itunes?

I really need help on yhis one. I do have an wondows computer. Plz help!

No. Home sharing only works when the computer is on and while iTunes is running.
You can sync your music to the iPad. Select your music in the Music Pane of iTunes while the iPad is connected to your PC, with iTunes running and with the iPad selected. This will explain how to sync any content to the iPad.

  • How can I setup Home Sharing with a Sonicwall TZ 100?

I have configured Home Sharing on 2 laptops and 1 desktop in my home network.  The two laptops (WiFi) see each other's respective libraries.  Neither can see the home desktop's library.  They are all on the same subnet.  I have created firewall rules on all devices to allow tcp 3689 and udp 5353 traffic.  I even went as far as disabling the firewalls on the computers (all three) completely.  I have enabled Multicasting on the Wifi interface of the Sonicwall.  The Sonicwall is setup in basic wan/lan mode with ALL LAN interfaces in the same port group to ensure they co-exist on the same subnet.  I am running Itunes 10.6.
I still can't see the desktop computer's library and it can't see the two laptops.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks in advance,
    Shrpshtr

First, make sure you've got the home share set up on both computers, as per the following document:
iTunes: Setting up Home Sharing on your computer
Have both computers running and have iTunes open on both computers.
Now, in the iTunes on the computer you want to transfer music to, select the library that you want to transfer music from, as per the following screenshot:
Once the other library loads, go down to the bottom of the screen and in "Show:" select "Items not in my library":
If you want to import all of the songs you can now see, head up to the iTunes menu bar and go "Edit > Select all". Then head down to the bottom of the screen again and click the "Import" button in the bottom-right-hand corner.

My desktop is HP with win 7- trying to get my Vista Lap top to have the same tunes I purchased on my desktop.

    wmorton1942

don't get confused by the color icons - the screen shots where taken on an iTunes 9.x library, but what you want to see in iTunes is this (view from my MBP's iTunes seeing the library on my Mini)
if you then click on the house icon, it will change to this and the shared library will load. at that point, two buttons will appear in the lower right corner of the iTunes window, being settings and import.
now you should be able to import any content from any shared library by selecting the content and clicking on import.
via settings, you can select which newly purchased content is transferred automatically to homeshared libraries
if the icon looks like this , home sharing has not been set up correctly.
in order for home sharing to work:
    (a) iTunes on all machines must be authorized for the same iTunes store account
    (b) all machines must be on the same network
    (c) all machines must have access to the internet.

  • How can I use home sharing? (main computer)

Well, I have a Windows PC and almost on my music is in Home Sharing with my sister (her computer is the main computer, I'm pretty sure) . When her computer is closed, the home sharing disapeers.
Is there anything I can do so that I can always have home sharing or move the music to my music folder? Something like that?
    Any help will be appreciated!

  • Does Home Sharing not work through a network extender?

Home sharing seems to cut out whenever I get into range of my network extender (Airport Express).
Here's my setup, it's pretty standard: Cable modem wired to Airport Extreme router, which is connected wirelessly to the MBP with my iTunes hard drive. All of this is in my living room.
I use the Airport Express to extend my network into the bedrooms.
Whenever I'm home sharing from my iTunes library on my iPhone, if I walk to my bedroom, it cuts out. It usually crashes the iPod app. If it doesn't completely crash it, I can get it to restart buffering if I walk back to the living room.
Does Home Sharing not work with wireless extenders? Do I have to change something in the set up?

However, when a device goes from being attached to one wireless device to another, there is often an interruption as the device must change the radio connection to the network. There is a brief period of no connectivity (a second or two)
Try starting the share while in your bedroom instead of the living room. I'll bet it works.
Makes sense - so it's a bug in the iPhone OS, that it's unable to recover from temporary interruptions to wifi connection?
However, I'm not so sure. Starting the share in the bedroom works as you suggest (since 4.3.2 - didn't under 4.3.1) - but as soon as you go back to the living room and the iPhone connects to a different base station the music stops playing. Note also that the shared library itself ceases to work. So for example you can't be in one room (on the extender) and add the shared library (without actually playing anything yet) then move to another room (on the base station) and play a track from the shared library. It just plays dead and you have to explicitly reload the shared library to get anything to play.
So is it maybe a bug also with iTunes that it can't keep up with a shared library client moving from one wifi station to another?
How do you report these things to the people that matter by the way?
