  • Can't get external hard disk icons to appear on iMac desk top

    Hi guys,
I hope someone can help me. I have OS X Lion on my iMac. I noticed that a few days after installing it, my external  hard disk icons and  Macintosh HD icons  disappeared from the desktop. I tried going to Finder- Preferences- Show these items on desktop and checked the appropriate boxes but this only restored the Macintosh HD icon to the desktop. Checking the "External disks" box makes no difference. When I open Finder I can see the external hard disks in the sidebar so I don't think there is a problem with the disks. Can anyone advise me on how to restore the external hard disk icons to the desktop?
    Thanks a million

I'm not sure why they're not showing but try doing a couple of troubleshooting steps. Restart the machine in the Restore Partition, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Option key and choose the Restore Partition. Then open Disk Utilities and Repair Disk Permisssions on your internal HD at least 2x, while you are in DU it wouldnt hurt to run Repair Disk, again 2x. Then restart the computer in Safe Mode to clear some caches and finally restart normally and check.

  • How can I erase my hard disk with OS X 10.8.2?

How can I erase my hard disk with OS X 10.8.2?

If you want to erase the hard disk and reinstall OS X, follow these steps:
    1. Back up your data to an external disk if you don't want to lose everything. When you erase a hard disk, everything is deleted.
    2. Press Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
    3. Select Macintosh HD on the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    4. After erasing the disk, close Disk Utility and reinstall OS X, so OS X will be installed with factory settings.
Don't forget to install iLife applications after the installation, if you need them. They come in the Applications DVD (if your Mac came with Snow Leopard or older), or open App Store > Purchases and download them

How can I connect the iTunes in my iPad (now with iOS7) to my Power PC Mac?

Nope, the top OS version for the IBM processor is 10.5.8, and under that version I can not update the iTunes further than the 10.6.3 :-(
But that means the brand leaves a large chunch os costumers with still perfectly operating computers out of the loop on purpose, so to force us to upgrade computer?
Not fair at all, both are legitimate Apple products, they should sync no matter what! The sad thing is theu used to, before I migrated to iOS7 on the iPad, move that I now regret...

  • How to format an external hard disk Mac Os Extended (Journaled)?

    hello
I connect an external hard disk (2.5' IDE Western Digital Scorpio Blue, WD2500BEVE) via USB or FireWire to my Mac mini. The Disk Utility tool shows an external disk drive of 128 GB - but the disk has 250 GB. How can I format the external USB/Firewire-harddisk 250 GB "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"?
I tried also to format the disk on a Windows PC (Windows XP). But I could not find a software to format "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)".
Any hints on this? Thanks in advance for any feedback!

As I use theses hard disks in a external hard disk case, I'm asking me whether my hard disk cases do not support more that 128 GB disk capacity. Is that realistic?
It is not only realistic but probably the reason your Mac cannot see more than 128 GB of the capacity of the drives mounted in them. It has nothing to do with the interface between the Mac & case (like Firewire) but instead with the controller in the case that connects the raw ATA drive to that interface. Older ATA standards used a 28 bit LBA (logical block address) scheme to access the disk. For 512 bytes per sector this works out to a maximum of 128 GB of addressable disk capacity. The ATA-6 standard, also called Ultra-ATA/100 or just ATA-100, increased the bits in the address space from 28 to 48, with a disk capacity limit of 2 petabytes.
ATA-6 was introduced in 2001, so any external drive case made before then for ATA drives will be forever limited to 128 G. Even now, some come with a controller that does not support the ATA-6 standard, & essentially none have all the hardware to support its full 48 bits of address capacity. However, since 2 PB (2000 terabyte) drives won't be available anytime soon, all you really need is a case that is ATA-6 or better compliant & supports enough address bits for the largest drive you intend ever to put in it.
Case makers don't usually make this information easily available but many now include a "bullet" spec about the maximum capacity their case supports, typically rounded off to simple numbers like 320 GB, 500 GB, or whatever. If you can't find this info, you can assume that the newer the case the more likely it is to support larger capacity drives, or just buy one with a good return policy & test it yourself with the largest raw drive you own.

  • Connect external hard disk with iMovie

I bought a new external hard disk and would like to connect that with iMovie.  The disk is formatted with Mac format.  When I start iMove, I can see the hard disk appeared in the Event Library.  However, I cannot move the file into it and there is a yellow triangle signal appeared.  Would you please kindly advise how to deal with it?  Many thanks!

    Hi
The disk is formatted with Mac format.
Mac can open and use many different formatting's - but for Video only one works (as I know off)
    • Video - Mac OS Extended (hfs)  (journaled or not)
Not - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for much BUT NOT FOR VIDEO.
Else - there is a size problem too
I just bought a 2Tb HD and was not able to format it unless I partitioned it into smaller volumes - I think that about 750Gb is OK so I made 4x500Gb. Then it was formatted OK.

  • How to password protect external hard disk drives

    Hi All,
I have purchased and external USB port hard disk. The problem with it is anyone just plug it to thier computers USB port and use it as we use our windows explorer to browse the filesystem. However whenever I plug to my computers USB port it should prompt me for a password and once authenticated it should allow me to browse the filesystem of my external hard disk. How can I achieve this using java ?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Kumar.

If you really want this to work properly, you will have to write a DLL for Windows that will intercept the appropriate filesystem call and prompt you for a password. Otherwise, another option would be:
Create a standalone Java application that will read/write from the hard drive
Use Java Cryptography extension for all read/writes to the hard drive (encrypt onto hard drive, decrypt into memory or internal hard drive)
Have your sign-on required to use the Java application (and hence, decrypt the contents of the drive)
Use passphrase-based symmetric encryption so that the password can be the actual key for the encryption/decryption (or if you want, have that key unlock a larger symmetric key also encrypted on the drive)- Saish

  • HT5313 How can i change my hard disk up to 250 GB or 500 GB ?

Can i change my hard disk up to 200 GB or 500 GB ? if i can,how should i do ?

Clone backup current drive to an external disk (SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner). The external disk should be a FireWire drive so you can boot it (I believe the White MacBooks only booted external FireWire drives). You should test booting the cloned external before continuing.  Or you could clone the current MacBook drive to the new replacement drive, which could be done via USB or FireWire.
If I recall correctly, remove the battery, remove a metal shield, pull out the current drive, remove the bracket, attach bracket to new drive, slide new drive back in, put metal shield back on, put battery back in.
If you cloned directly to new replacement drive, boot up your MacBook and enjoy.
If you cloned to an external FireWire, boot the external cloned FireWire drive,  and clone it back to the new replacement drive.
If you consider your data valuable, have yet another backup to a different drive before starting just to be safe.
There should be YouTube videos that will show you how to do this, or search MacSales.com for how to videos.

  • Connecting external hard disk drive

I was just wondering if we buy an external hard disk drive, will it work on the Mac ? Or must we also buy an external hard disk drive manufactured specially by Apple ?
Can Mac read and write from/to this external HDD ?
    Thanks

Apple has not manufactured external hard drives in at least 8 years.
Most external hard drives will work with Macs. Many though are preformated to only work with Mac OS X. Since according to your profile 10.5.4 is on your machine, you should be fine on that account. Some are preformated for NTFS, or FAT32 and you need to use Disk Utility in your Applications -> Utilities folder to format it to be usable as a clone backup, or as a backup for Time Machine. If you want to share the hard drive between Mac and Windows machines, see this user tip:

Note, since you posted to the iMac Flat Panel forum, I can only surmise you have a PowerPC Mac with a white dome and a screen on a rotating chrome arm. If not, you posted to the wrong forum. Here's how to identify your Mac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1463?viewlocale=en_US
If you have a PowerPC Mac, you must get a Firewire hard drive in order for your external hard drive to be bootable as a clone backup.
Intel Macs supports both USB and Firewire for external booting.

  • How can I optimize my hard disk drive usage and performance in Windows 8 or Windows 7?

QuestionHow can I optimize my hard disk drive usage and performance in Windows 8 or Windows 7?
AnswerThere are a few simple steps you can take to ensure your hard disk drive is used optimally.
    Use Toshiba HDD Protection
Many Toshiba laptops come with a program called Toshiba HDD Protection pre-installed. This program helps to protect your hard disk drive from being damaged due to falls or impacts. By default, it should already be enabled. You might be tempted to lower the detection levels in this application, but doing so could cause your hard disk drive to be damaged. Remember that while the application can reduce the chance of damage, you should still avoid allowing the laptop to fall or suffer rapid impacts.
For more information on this utility, see the following article:
    TOSHIBA HDD Protection
    Optimize the drive
Windows 8 and Windows 7 optimize hard disk drives automatically through a process called defragmentation. Unless you've disabled this, you don't need to do anything. If you have disabled this and want to run the process, you can still do so.
In Windows 8, search for "Defrag" at the Windows Start screen and select "Defragment and optimize your drives."
In Windows 7, search for "Defrag" in the Start Menu's search field and select "Disk defragmenter."
You can use this tool to optimize your hard disk drives, allowing Windows to find needed files faster.
    Remove items from startup
Some applications run automatically when Windows starts. This can add additional functionality, but it also decreases the performance of your computer. Sometimes you might want to disable certain programs from starting automatically.
In Windows 8, search for "Task Manager" at the Start screen. Select the "Startup" tab. Select an application you'd like to disable from starting automatically and then click the "Disable" button in the lower-right.
In Windows 7, type "msconfig" in the Start Menu's search field and press ENTER. Uncheck the boxes next to applications you'd like to disable from starting automatically.
You should be sure of the purpose of an application before disabling it from starting automatically. Some applications might be important. If in doubt, you might consider searching on the Web to discover more information about a program. Remember that if you find that you disabled something vital, you can always re-enable it.
