How can I control which apps use cellular data?

Sometimes I marvel at Apple's amazingness and sometimes I can't believe the holes.  Googling around I get the impression that iOS/iPhone provides no means for a user to take control of their data plan and set which apps are permitted to use cellular data and to track cellular data usage on an app by app basis.  Am I the only one that finds it unbelievable that an operating system designed for a cell phone that supports adding piles of sometimes sketchy 3rd party apps doesn't have this baked right in?  There seem to be a few apps try monitor overall aggregate data usage, but they are useless at getting to the root cause.
So, I hope I'm just missing it.  How do I figure out which broken, buggy, misconfigured app I stupidly installed is eating my data plan?  Maybe Android is a better choice for guys like me that are too busy to play whack a mole uninstalling and reinstalling apps for hours and days to try to solve such a tedious mystery.
Thanks!

iOS obviously allows only 10 Apps to be Chosen in The "Open in" function. How can I control which Apps ( if more than 10 are installed) can be selected?

I think that is influenced by the order in which the apps are installed on the iPad (I believe that it's the most recent 10 ?) - but as I haven't got more than 10 apps that support any document/file type I can't check.

  • How can I restrict certain apps to cellular data only?

    Product Name: iPhone 6
    Product iOS: 8.3
Background: I listen to Pandora at work through my iPhone 6. My work has pandora traffic blocked through their WiFi network. I want to keep my iPhone connected to the work WiFi because 1) I don't want to turn on and off my WiFi on my phone 2) I want to my email and other apps to use WiFi since they are not blocked.
    Current Workarounds (not a solutions):
    1) Turn off and on WiFi on iPhone 6- This is a pain/hassle and I forget to turn the WiFi back on.
    2) Switching to a different streaming music providers that aren't blocked by work WiFi- I pay for Pandora One and I like this service the best. I really don't want to switch.
    3) Download music to iPhone memory- I pay for Pandora One and I'd like to use it.
    4) Jailbreak- Not sure if this a solution but I'd rather not jailbreak my device.
Question: How can I restrict certain apps (Pandora) to use cellular data only?
    Best Regards,
    Chasen

The network settings in iOS are global and do not support assigning specific networks to specific apps. You cannot do what you describe.

  • When opening a Photoshop file with Bridge, how can I control which version of Photoshop the file wil

When opening a Photoshop file fthrough Bridge, how can I control which version of Photoshop the file will open in?
I store my PSD files adjacent to the original RAW file from which it was derived.
If I open the file folder and double click on that PSD file, it opens in CS6. But,if I use Bridge (CS6) to navigate to and open the same file, it first opens Photoshop CS5 and then opens that PSD file in CS5.
How can I control which Photoshop will open a file I select when opening it through Bridge?.

Interesting, but it doesn't give a clue what I'm supposed to do. No Photoshop ducuments listed.
Look at the PSD file on the location Curt provided and search for Photoshop Document. Next to it ideally should show Adobe Photoshop CS6 if you have Bridge CS6 open. Click on it to provide the fly out menu and choose the correct Photoshop from the list.
But probably something went wrong with your install. By default Bridge chooses the latest version of PS to open its file in.
Maybe a reset of the preferences might also help you. Can you provide more details about OS version etc.
And do you have a good reason for keeping your Raw and finished files in the same location. Personally I keep them apart and use a proper file name convention (yyyymmdd and details) so I can easily search for the DNG files in my archive if I needed them but I don't make mistakes in opening the wrong one

  • How can I tell which apps were purchased on my account?

I did search for answers but couldn't find one that fit.
I have an iPhone and so does our son.
Early on my son purchased apps on my account and downloaded them on HIS iphone.  Eventually, I got him his own iPhone account and so he has also purchsed apps on his own account and downloaded them on his phone.
When we open iTunes and connect his phone, there is a list of apps that are on his phone.
    QUESTION
How can we tell which apps were purchased on HIS iTunes acct and which were purchased on MY iTunes acct?
I don't want to DO anything with the apps, I just want to know one from another.
    Thanks in advance!!

  • How can I update my app using my own ac?

can I know if I can update my app from the other ac ?cause when I downloaded the app I used my friend ID  but now I can't contact him .so how can I update the app using my own ac?

You can't, all content is tied to the account that bought/downloaded it, so only that account will be able to download updates to its apps.

  • Some apps "use cellular data" will not remain turned off

some apps "use cellular data" will not remain turned off
No matter how often I go to settings>cellular and turn off the apps, as soon as I close that screen they automatically turn back on.
I prefer not to delete the apps and reload them as I will loose the data in them when they are removed.
    Thanks for the help.

First thing and easiest thing to try is a device reset:
    Device Reset (won't affect settings/data/music/apps/etc)
    1. Press and hold (& continue to hold) BOTH the Sleep/Wake button & the Home button.
    2. Continue to hold BOTH (ignoring any other messages that may show) until you see the Apple logo on the screen.
    3. Release BOTH buttons when you see the Apple logo and allow the device to boot normally.

  • Why would the settings app use cellular data

when i go into settings and can choose what apps use cellular data, 'settings' is a choice and in fact has used 99.4 kb of data. anyone know why? thanks.

trying one more time to get an answer for this.

  • Why my apps can't be disable on USE CELLULAR DATA FOR under Cellular settings

I came across an issue that my apps tend to stay on ( enable ) even when I disabled it manually, it will turn back on soon after, this can cause certain people data overage and extra data cost they did not expect. I always check my settings daily because I play with my phone numerous times a day so I noticed any changes or differences. So after I had done probably most people have tried, reset/restart the phone, check any latest OS updates, double check any settings, reset network settings, turn off and on data, turn on and off airplane mode, the conclusion is nothing. So I thought maybe i should try one app that I know kept turning back on when I disabled it, did the updates on the appstore, went back to the settings and I was able to turn on and off, tried the second app just to make sure my  assumption works, updated the newest version on appstore, it works. So I decided to update all of the apps, then the problem is FIXED ! I hope this solve people's issue. Now I am able to manually disable and enable any app under USE CELLULAR DATA FOR,It was lucky guess for me and it work.

Did you try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Appel logo comes back again? You will not lose data by resetting.
If this does not work, did you try to switch off Cellular Data, restart the phone and switch it back on again?

  • How can I control the apps that show up in 'open In' popovers as my favourite old apps no longer appear in the popover?

I have noticed the maximum no of apps that appear in 'Open in' is 10 and more frustratingly, new apps which sharing functions replace my favourite old apps (especially good reader app) in the 'Open In'. Is it possible to determine which apps appear in the 'Open In'?, increase the no? Or at least force my favourite apps to appear there or prevent them from being displaced? The only way I cope now is to delete the least favoured apps with sharing functions in order to allow my favourite apps to appear?

There isn't currently a way to edit or control which apps appear in the 'open in' list apart from deleting (or deleting and reinstalling) apps - you could try leaving feedback and maybe in the future we'll have some sort of control : http://www.apple.com/feedback/ipad.html

  • How can I tell which apps are using data

Perhaps this is a suggestion, just in case someone who is in a position to note this at Apple (not likely?) might read it.
How about an app included in the OS that allows users to track which apps are transmitting and receiving data through cellular data and/or wireless.
I keep getting charged by AT&T (it took restraint to not type a bunch of explatives before AT&T) for escessive data usage, even though I'm in wifi 90%+ of each day, and purposely restrict using it when not in wifi. Seriously, I don't now how I could use it less barring not using it at all, and I still get charged for data. I have no idea how to control this since I cannot tell which, if any, apps are transmitting data in the background, or if that's even possible.
Seriously annoyed at getting charged extra when the 'service' they provide barely works for me the miniscule amount of times I try to use it.

  • How can I tell which apps or programs are open at any time. At a recent visit to the Genius at my local Apple store, the "Genius" told me that too many apps or programs are running in the background. I'm using Mountain Lion on a McBook Pro

I was told that my Mac has to work extra hard because there are too many apps and/or programs open in the background. How can one tell what is open?? It must be something which is not normally visible to the user??
    Hans

Thanks, I have looked at that several times but I can't detect any one item which would indicate overusage. The small chart (indicator bars) are much on the low side and the onse which show are basically green? Not sure what the person at the Genius Bar saw so I'm somewhat puzzled.

  • How do I know/how can I control which video card a particular application uses?

    Hey there--
Simple question: I have the ATI Radeon HD 2600 256 MB and the NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 1536 MB installed via PCIe ports on an early 2008 Mac Pro. I've decided for a multitude of reasons that I'd like my displays to be plugged into the HD 2600, but I want certain applications-- Final Cut, games, etc-- to use the FX 5600. How can I be sure that this is happening? Is it possible? Will more intensive applications automatically utilize the proper card?
    Thanks much.

Yes, it means the 7970 requires 1 x 6 pin and 1 x 8 pin. The Mac Pro supplies 2 x 6 pin, which is 75 Watts each.
So Mac Pro can supply 75 Watts from PCIe slot and 2 x 75 Watts from 2 x 6 pin for the total of 225 Watts.
The 7970 requires more than 225 Watts. There are people that run these cards from internal power and say the additional power pulled over the traces on the Mainboard won't damage the board, but I've seen several reports of burned out Mainboards and more commonly the PSU just shuts the Mac Pro down hard for safety reasons. Remember: the 2 x 6 pin ports power runs over traces(!) on the board, not over cables. If you over tax them this is a lot more dangerous as with cables.
It's up to everyone to decide for themself if they want to risk running cards above the power provided by the Mac Pro.
The safe way is always to go for 2 x SATA to 1 x 6 pin adapter and 2 x 6 pin to 1 x 8 pin adapters and provide the power for 7970 / R9 280x or GTX 780 in the Mac Pro like that. Or get an external / additional PSU for power hungry GPUs. That works, too.
But you will obviously lose 2 x SATA ports. I run eSATA with RAID5 anyway, since RAID5 in the Mac Pro is too much of a hassle.
Of course all that matters if it works in the end. But official power specifications are a matter you shouldn't take too lightly.

  • How can I tell which app is causing my phone to vibrate

    Hi,
My phone has srtarted vibrating randomly when on silent, and it makes the classic "do do do-xylephone" tri-tone, when not on silent, and I can't figure out which app is causing it. It's driving me nuts!
This used to happen to me months ago, then it just stopped for the longest time, and it started again.
This is with iOS7. 7.0.6 specifically. iPhone 5s.
I went into settings, notification center, and I have selected, sort by notifications view...by time and I heard that I can tell this way, by whatever app is listed first. Well, reminders is listed first and I don't have anything there that's supposed to go off randomly like my iPhone is doing. So that can't be it. Is there another way to tell?
Now, coincidentally, I had my iPhone on the desk while I had my mac open, with the twitter app open on the mac and I did notice the instant, a little dot appeared in twitter, to indicate a new tweet, my phone vibrated. I thought twitter could have been the issue, so I turned off any type of notification for twitter and that didn't seem to solve the issue as it happened again.
Any help is much appreciated. This is extremely annoying. I'd say it happens so erratically, that it can be twice within 15 minutes, or much more spaced out.

You will have to go to settings, notification center and scroll down the list to see wich apps you use notifications for that do no not use badge app icon. Most likely my guess is your email app because I had this issue. But still check the other apps also just in case.

  • How can i see which apps in my ipad consume more battery power

I noticed lately the power consumption on my ipad 3 has gone considerably up. A full charge lasts me about 8 hrs and to chrge it upm(through the mains), it takes 4hrs +.  I downloaded many apps lately and suspect one of them may be power hungry. Is there  a good App that allows me to establish which app(s) eat up the power on my Ipad 3 & equally allow me to terminate unnecessary processes?
    Any suggestions folks?

The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night.
