How can I delete all those ! dead files from iTunes without having to do it manually?

I recently merged 2 iTunes libraries into 1 on a PC. This has resulted in 1000's of dead files, notated by a ! (exclamation point). Does anyone know of a quick way of removing all of these without needing to spend many hours doing it manually?

Lost & Found
Create a playlist called Found, select everything in Music and drag it into the Found playlist (it may take some time to count the tracks that are to be dropped). Create a smart playlist called Lostmatching All the rules Playlist is Music and Playlist is not Found. Your lost tracks will be in this playlist. You should be able to select all the tracks in this playlist with CTRL-A and then remove them from iTunes with CTRL-SHIFT-DELETE.
Or use iTunes Folder Watch with its option to check for dead tracks on start up.
However if the broken tracks are duplicates of non-broken files then I've written a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates, merge ratings, play counts and playlist membership, and remove dupes with dead links as long as there is one real file to merge the stats to. See this thread for background. I also have a tool called FindTracks for fixing the broken links if the files are sill there but not quite where iTunes is looking for them. Optional: It depends a bit on why things aren't where iTunes expects to find them but if they are in sensible Artist & Album folders in some common location then my FindTracks script should be able to reconnect them to iTunes. FindTracks uses some fuzzy matching routines and searches for multiple potential locations. For more details see this thread. Once you have repaired the tracks that can be found you can drag the contents of the Lost playlist into Found which will update things.
Or, you can simply delete all the tracks in the Lost playlist with Ctrl-A to select them and then Shift-Delete to delete.

I have an older 80GB ipod classic that works but will not play any songs. I'm trying to delete all songs and data from the hard drive to see if that will fix the problem, however, it will not appear in my itunes. It might, but I wouldn't bet much on it. Either way, give it a shot.
Otherwise, if appears in Windows an external hard disk, try a low level reformat of the device's hard drive. See here for instructions on how to do this.

Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. Follow these steps to delete the photos on your iPhone that were synced over from your computer (be sure to just check albums that you want to sync or don't do not check any albums if you don't want any photos synced over):
To delete synced photos and videos
In iTunes, select the device icon in the Devices list on the left. Click the Photos tab in the resulting window.
Choose "Sync photos from."
On a Mac, choose iPhoto or Aperture from the pop-up menu.
On a Windows PC, choose Photoshop Album or Photoshop Elements from the pop-up menu.
Choose "Selected albums" and deselect the albums or collections you want to delete.
Click Apply.

My laptop recently caught a virus and I had to reformat the hardive meaning losing my iTunes library. I still have everthing on my iPod and an external hard drive. I've already tried the transfer purchases button which did just that, transfer my downloaded apps and purchased music. But what about my 1400 other songs? I'd rather not download third party software and my wife found a way to do it with her iPod nano but my touch won't work that way because it only reads my iPod as a camera for some strange reason. Being a 1st gen it has no camera. When I transferred the purchased files it had me autherize the computer so can I simply just sync it now or will I lose everything? Or can i just transfer everything from my old library on my external to my new one?

- Yes you can just import the music from the external HD to your iTunes library.
- Now to switch syncing computers you need to do the following to retain app data and other information on the iPod.
- Connect the iPod from to the computer and make a backup by right clicking on the iPod under Devices i iTunes and select Back Up
- Restore the iPod from that backup
Note that the backup that iTunes makes does not include synced media like apps and music. You must hae have those in the iTunes library before the restore since the restore eases the iPod.
