How can I do a clean install of Leopard without the DVD?

My macbook pro is running very slowly and keeps popping up with a notification that the startup disk is full.  I'd like to do a clean install but do not have the DVD.  Is there a way for me to do a clean install without this disk? If not, is there an easy way to wipe the HD to speed things up?

You can call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775, provide the Serial Number and specifications of the Mac, and for a small fee, a replacement set of system discs (if available), can be ordered.
However, the discs will be for the original version of OS, that was pre-installed, when the Mac was manufactured.

  • How can I do a "clean install" Snow Leopard?

Think I have corrupted the system, even though Disk Utility says it it fine.  I have upgraded to 10.6.8, but only have the DVD 10.6.
Have inserted the DVD and tried to reinstall the base system about 5 times - all failed - came up with failure notice "could not instal support files" (or similar)
Can I delete/modify the existing system folder to allow it to complete the reinstall?  Tried swearind at it, but that did not work - any suggestions welcome.

Clean my Mac is best left dumped. And it doesn't have any functionality like that.
Universal applications don't need third-party assistance - they contain both Intel and PowerPC code.
Applications which were built for PowerPC processors only can mostly still run in Snow Leopard under Rosetta, but unlike Leopard, in SL you need to select Rosetta in the custom installations as it doesn't install by default.
Your Epson software will need updated drivers for SL - the original ones probably won't work (that goes for a large no. of printers and scanners)
Your problem is most likely the pirated installer.

  • How can I do a clean install of Mountain Lion?

I have an older MacBook Pro that I'm selling. I upgraded to Mounbtain Lion, but there was not an option to do a clean install (wiping everything clean and starting fresh). I want to do this to make sure all of my data is removed before I sell it. How can I do a clean install of Mountain Lion in order to accomplish this? In the past, from DVDs, it was easy. Thanks!

Sure, but I would imagine that it will be common for people to sell their Macs with upgraded OSs.
That was only OK when you bought the Upgrade DVD and included both the original system discs and the disc you used to upgrade the OS.
Since Apple has now gone to the Download only model of OS X you now always need to install the Original OS or an Upgraded version that you have the DVD disc for.
If a Mac came with Leopard and you upgraded to Snow Leopard and then to Lion or Mt Lion you must remove Lion or Mt Lion and reinstall either Leopard or Snow Leopard and include all the discs for that system, Originals and the Upgrde Snow Leopard DVD.
If your system came Snow Leopard and you installed Lion or Mt Lion thenn again you remoeve Lion or Mt Lion and reinstall Snow Leopard and include the original discs that came with the system
If your system came with Lion and you upgraded to Mt Lion then you remove Mt Lion and reinstall Lion.
The reason for all of that is because with the Download only OS all upgrades are TIED to YOUR Apple ID, not to the computer. So the new owner can not reinstall Lion or Mt Lion, whichever you upgraded to, without using your Apple ID.

  • How can I do a clean install after doing an update using a volume purchase license?

My question is this:  We purchased 20 licenses of Lion through the Volume Purchase program.  2 of the users installed it first doing an upgrade - now they have decided they want to do a clean install.  How can they do a clean install - I can't give them the installer cd we created because I have been informed by Apple Sales that it will use another license from our quantity of 20 - but they offered no other solution.
We would rather not waste another license just to do a clean install.
    Thanks!

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
This method relies on the Internet Recovery system. This is the standard procedure when you don't have an installer or Lion came pre-installed.

  • Wipe and install OSX Leopard without the disk

    Hi everyone,
I need to wipe my iMac and reinstall OS X Leopard. I have the install disks, but my CD drive doesn't work and can't read the disk.
Is there a way for me to wipe and install OSX Leopard without the disk?
    Thanks.

You can turn the 2011 iMac into a Firewire Optical drive.
Put the Leo Install Disc into the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 iMac while holding t key to put it into FW Target Disk Mode, with a FW cable connect the the 2, boot older one holding Alt key, choose the Leo Install Disc to boot from.

  • How can I do a clean install of Snow Leopard with out losing iLife applications?

I bought my Macbook pro in 2009 and am currently running the Leopard software. I want to do a clean install of Snow Leopard, but I do not want to lose my iLife applications.  I lost the DVD's that came with the computer. Is there any way I can do a clean install of Snow Leopard with out losing my iLife applications?
Will a regular installation of Snow Leopard allow the App store to recognize that my computer has iLife and mark it as a purchased item in my account. If it can, then would I be able to do a clean install and re-download the apps for free.
    Any help would be appreciated!

    1. Install Snow Leopard normally; this will keep the applications intact. An actual clean installation involves either erasing the partition or creating a blank one, and neither of those will carry the applications over.
    2. The previous iLife installation won't carry over to the Mac App Store, and the Mac App Store versions are incompatible with Snow Leopard.

When I try to run my CAN application on a system on which NI-CAN s/w is not installed. It gives the error
"Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142)" [error message is attached]. I included all the NI-CAN DLL's[list got using the Depends utility] under my application setup [built using InstallShield V10.0]. It copies the DLL's to the C:\winnt\system32 directory.
Am I missing any step like registering the DLL's, etc.
    Can you/anyone please help ...

  • How can i download  OS X Lion 10.7 without the app store?

ow can i download  OS X Lion 10.7 without the app store ?

You don't. For a while, Apple sold 10.7 usb sticks, but they don't now. See if you can find one of them lying around. Otherwise, the mac app store is your only option. (P.S. To even get 10.7, you have to call Apple at 1-800-MY-APPLE and buy a download code. Lion is not availible on the app store without a code).

  • How can I do a clean install of OS?

Just bought a 15" MacBook Pro. Did a migration from a previous machine. Doing the migration screwed something up. Long story. Upshot is, I want to wipe out the system and start with a clean slate.
I inserted the Mac OS 10.6 DVD while machine was running and the machine ejects the disk after about 90 seconds with no error message.
Also tried booting with the disk in. Same result.
I assume that there's a way to do a clean OS install using the disk, right?
How can I get the machine to read the disk (which I have handled very carefully and which appears flawless)?
Current OS installed on machine: 10.6.1.
    Thanks,
    Ethan

    hey ebdb,
try holding down the option button while booting up and then choose the boot up from the disk. Make sure you press the option key right after you hear the bong sound at start up.

  • How can I do a "clean" install of Lion

I have installed Lion over several successively upgraded versions of OS X and I'm now finding my system very wonky, with more and more small glitches and the occasional freeze. I'd like to simply start over and install it clean but, having bought the App Store rather than thumb drive version, how can I do this?
    Edward

You can do this very easily.  You can reboot in recovery mode by holding down command-R at startup, where you can erase the hard drive and reinstall the system from scratch.  However, you'll have to re-download it that way.  A better alternative is to re-download the installer from the App Store and then use it to make a bootable Lion install disk.  (I put it on an 8 GB flash drive, myself.)
However, note that there are probably some easier solutions.  Take a look at some of the suggestions in the second half of Understanding upgrade nightmares*.

  • How can i do a Clean install of Audigy 2 Z

I'm trying to find info on how to do a clean install of audigy 2 ZS, the first install the progam wasn't doing anything for like 5mins so i stoped it.Now i cannot uninstall it from? add/remove programs. You would think all the money Creative makes off these card wouldn't be so **bleep** hard to uninstall the software when it acts up.

Here's my method (it takes a while, but it works perfectly).
. Uninstall all Creative software in add/remove programs.
    (a. You may want to physically remove your soundcard if Windows automatically installs a driver for it.)
    2. Boot into safemode and run DriverCleaner Pro (selecting the Creative option).
    3. Reboot.
    4. Delete the Creative directory (c:\program files\creative)
    5. Assuming you've got show hidden files turned on, go to your installshield directory (c:\program files\installshield installation information).
    6. You'll see a whole bunch of folders. Delete all folders with anything related to creative in them. They usually have files with CT in the name).
    7. Reboot, then run CCleaner (use the issues button).
I know it's long winded, but this is the only way to get a 00% Creative free system. I found the installshield thing out the hard way - I kept getting a plxcore error and BSOD during driver installs until I figured it out.

  • Installed Snow Leopard successfully ( from dmg) - how can I do a clean install?

    Hi,
I have Snow Leopard as a .dmg file that I installed on a USB. I successfully updated the old 10.5 Leopard OS, however, what I would really like to do is a clean install. Does anybody know if this can be accomplished using a .dmg on the USB? I can't find the original Snow Leopard disks that I had.
    Thanks,
    Chris

As stated in the next to last item in the list on the right, it is not possible to install from a dmg.

  • How can I do a clean install of Mavericks?

So I just traded my iMac for a macbook pro from someone on craigslist. Everytime I buy a computer off someone on craigslist I like to do a clean install and do a secure erase of the hard drive. Well normally I do this by taking a USB drive and making a installer on it for Mavericks and erasing the whole drive and making a new partition. Well I did this and after booting up and setting the mac up I noticed that some apps crashed a lot (Safari, iTunes, Mac app store) esspecially Safari when I try to clear the caches. Could something have gone wrong on the USB installer and do I need to redownload and recreate the USB installer and reinstall OS X again? Thanks in advance for the help!

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. I know the report is long. Please post all of it anyway.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and rarely helpful.
