How can I do a virus scan?

How do I preform a virus scan on my Mac? Do I have do download a certain application?

Very Funny everyone. But seriously, for a moment if you will. Are we Mac users really that safe? Could someone take a moment and explain? I have been a huge Mac fan ever since my first iMac, the one that looked like a bowling ball, and crashed every 10 minutes. Even then, the Mac OS was way ahead of Microsoft. Now, ever since X was written, I have a whole list of things I say when persuading someone to dump their pc and own a Mac. I had heard that virus problems just didn't happen on a Mac. I'm a believer... but why? How come we can be so flippant about the whole subject. I guess the days of "Virex" coming pre-installed on your iMac is ancient history.

We think we may have a virus from the USPS spam email. How can we detect a virus on our computer?

What makes you think there is a "virus"? Any symptoms...?
There are other types of malware (such as trojans) that can affect Mac OS X, but no viruses. A trojan would have to trick you into installing something (the malware) by making you think it is something else. You would be notified (by the system) that you are running a downloaded application for the first time, AND if something will be done to update your current system, you will be asked to authenticate (with your admin user name and password). If something like that comes up when you don't expect it, you should be suspicious (and NOT authenticate). Just opening an email won't do anything, even if it's an email that may affects Windows PCs.

• How do i perform a virus scan

how do i perform a virus scan?

Bryan,
As there are no (as in none, zero, nada, zip) viruses for OS X running a virus scan would probably be a total waste of time, energy and resources. The ONLY reason to run antivirus software is if you frequently download unknown files from the Internet and then pass them onto MS Windows users. The files could be infected and while they would not in any way affect OS X they could affect the MS Windows users.
However if you insist you can download ClamXav (Google it) which is free, frequently updated and is fairly easy on system resources.

• How Do I Run a Virus Scan? Attempting to Resolve Gmail Access Issue.

Hello. I'm not technically savey and am in need to assistance in resolving an issue. I suddenly am no longer able to access my GMail account. The system will not accept long-used password. I'm working back through GMail assistance forum and was told "to run a virus scan on the computer," i.e., "scan your machine for viruses and malware. Get rid of any programs found during the scan." The message refers me to a Google Pack, which comes with free anti-virus software. When I check the website I don't see anything that looks like it is appropriate for running a virus scan on the computer.
How do I "run a virus scan"? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hello Kappy, Thank you for your response. I reviewed a portion of the "Missing Manual" by David Pogue and figured out how to go into utilities and repair permissions. The following are the responses I got when I ran "repair permissions":

So what do I do with this information? I'm not sure what it means and how it impacts the computer. However, after I ran this, I was able to complete the goggle form for a new password (my computer no longer recognized my years-old password) and obtain a new one and then access my email account again. (I opened a bogus email yesterday that I have since learned contained a virus so I am assuming this may have caused my angst.) So I'm now back to my gmail account but not sure how the above information related to the "repairs permission" should be addressed if at all.
Thank you again for your assistance. I am truly not computer savey and what is intuitive for some folks just goes over my head so I truly appreciate your help.

• How do i run a virus scan on my macbook pro?

I have been told by student finance to run a virus scan as someone has hacked into my account and changed the bank details how do I do this?

Hacking of financial accounts happens, and it does not require access to your computer, either physically or via malware. Although there is Mac malware, there's none that you are likely to be infected with at the moment. See my Mac Malware Guide. Most likely that answer was simply a catch-all answer from someone used to dealing with Windows machines.
However, if you really want to run a scan, use ClamXav. If it finds any malware, post the details here before panicking... most likely, it's just Windows malware attached to an e-mail message or something. (If it's actually Mac malware, the name of the malware will include the text "OSX".) Also, note that you should not let any anti-virus software delete e-mail messages, if they are infected, as that will corrupt the mailbox containing the message.

• Why can't i get virus scan to work with downloads

I had Firefox before, and everytime I downloaded a file it scanned it. Now no matter what I do it will not run a virus scan!

Firefox doesn't do the "AV scan", it hands the scan off to the "registered" anti-virus application that you have installed. The "scan" should be done so fast that you shouldn't see more than a flash instance from Firefox of a scan being performed on the downloaded file, even if it is a large file like a 360Mb ISO image.
If you saw (or see) the download scan dialog run for like 4 to 5 seconds, or more, '''a scan isn't actually being performed''' - Firefox is giving you a misleading indication that a scan is being performed, when it isn't. ''It's like Firefox is blowing smoke up your arse, with a false indication. ''
I filed a Bug about this issue almost two years ago and it remains UNCONFIRMED. I only discovered it because I was doing am initial load of software on a PC that I had just built for myself, the first brand new one in over ten years, at the time. I was using a newly installed Firefox to download the Anti-Virus application I was going to install, and Firefox showed the download was being scanned, when I didn't even have an AV program installed on Windows 2000!
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=480855
Three similar Bugs that others have filed.
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=461989
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=501645
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=530307
I can't even find a list of the exact anti-virus applications that have the proper "hooks" in Windows that Firefox uses to "connect" the file being downloaded with the AV application - from either Microsoft or from Mozilla.
IMO, that feature is broken at least, and at the worst it gives an invaild indication that a scan is being performed when it isn't because the user either doesn't even have an AV application installed, or has an AV program that isn't compatible with this feature - I think Firefox should tell the user in both those situations.

My Internet company sent me a notification saying I had a "BOT" virus on my computer and that they would shut down my internet access. They given 28 hours to remove this virus. How Can I remove this thing!?

Flashback is only one possibility. See About the Flashback malware for information about it and how to get rid of it.
Unfortunately, these kinds of problems can happen for a variety of other reasons. There's very little malware that actually can cause a Mac to become part of a botnet. You could have an infected Windows PC on your network. (Perhaps because of a visitor or because you're using an open, unencrypted wireless network and have a "squatter.") Or it could be false positives.
If you do all the checks mentioned on my Flashback page and still can't find any infection, you need to lock down your wireless network (change the security to WPA2 with a strong password) and check out any Windows machines that are on your network.
(Note that my pages contain links to other pages that promote my services, and this should not be taken as an endorsement of my services by Apple.)

• My e-mail account is sending out spam mails; how can i delete the virus?

My e.mail account is sending out spam mails; I have got a spam virus probably during download of my e.mails over the i phone. How can i detect and delete the virus?

You do not have a virus on your Mac or iPhone.
An AOL account is accessed as an IMAP account with the Mail app or email client on your Mac, and with the iPhone's Mail app. The sent spam messages being available in the account's Sent mailbox means your AOL account has been compromised.
Change the password for your AOL email account.

• How can i customise faxes and 'scan to email' messages?

Hi, I have an OfficeJet 5740, and it works very well, but I'd like to ask how may I customise my faxes, for example adding a logo to the top of the fax, and customising 'scan to email' messages, again with a logo or changing in the email's subject heading, so that recipients can see specifically who the scans are from, rather than from HP (or [email protected]).
They needn't be customised with a different message everytime, just our company logo/name to make it clear who faxes and scans are coming from.
Thanks,
Sophia

Hi Sophia,
Do you refer to faxing or scanning? the issue description somehow confusing.
If you refer to scanning by the Scan to Email app, such customization cannot be done with the HP Scan to Email app but it only meant to allow basic scanning, you cannot even change any settings for a such as you may find listed within the 'How do I change scan settings like size, color, and resolution?' section below:
http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Officejet-5700-e-All-in-One-Printer-series/6617253/model/6617...
Scanning with the Scan to Email app will always result a mail from HP with a standard template which cannot be changed.
To customize your email you will need to scan from your PC using the HP Software and customize your email accordingly.

• How do you run a virus scan on desktop?

My email was hacked and I want to run a virus scan on my Mac to see if there's anything corrupting my computer

It's most likely not due to any malware infection.
http://www.thesafemac.com/mmg-infected/#spam
If you still want to do a scan, then a good bet is to get the free Sophos. But be warned, no A-V will find everything (definitions for any particular infection first have to be in the A-V catalog), and it may turn up false positives.

• Can an unwanted free virus scan harm my computer?

Hi,
Recently I was doing a google search and I clicked a link that appeared harmless, but as soon as I clicked it, the address immediately changed to something else and the website it took me to automatically began scanning (supposedly) my computer for viruses. I couldn't stop it and I couldn't close Safari, so I just shut down my computer. I can't remember what the site was or what I was even searching for, but can a site actually scan your computer without your consent, and if so, can it deposit a trojan or compromise my security in any way?
Thanks!

Hi LB,
Naw, you did good, you really have to install something & give an Admin PW to actually get infected.
Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers for the Interface you're using...
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Then Apply. These are safer/faster than most ISP's DNS numbers, and have been patched against DNS poisoning.

I just installed a ClamXav on my computer because I was told I had opened something in my mailbox. It is now showing 14

mende1 wrote:
That's a Windows virus.
Well, it probably is and then again, it might be nothing at all. The word "Heuristics" is the key that it was identified as being suspicious by a special heuristics scan engine, not by matching it against a specific signature. The scan spotted something and feels you need to be cautions with it.
The ".exe" would normally signal a Windows executable, but it could also be a self-extracting zip file, in which case it can be manually extracted by a Mac.
You are correct about items in Mail Downloads being OK to trash, but attachments are also embedded in the raw e-mail. Normally the only time they show up in Mail Downloads is if it has been viewed (such as an image) or saved. In these cases the user will normally see the same infection for both the original e-mail and the attachment. My guess is that the original e-mail had already been trashed or moved to the junk/spam folder.
From the attachment name, it almost certainly is one of the many Trojan's disguised as a delivery notice that made the rounds during the holidays, so I think all the right decisions were made. Just wanted to clarify a few things in case users jump to the wrong conclusion about the next attachment.
