How can I do an archive and install

I have just put my new 1TB HDD in my macbook pro and I cannot enable FV2, something to do with a recovery partition. I have heard that a reinstall will work, so how can I do an archive and install on my MacBook pro?
Mid-2012, Mountain Lion.
Thank you.

A&I went away with Snow Leopard. Reinstalling it or later OSs overwrites all OS components and basic Apple apps. Updating or upgrading to solve problems is the wrong approach, You need to fix the current issues before embarking on that path. As for speeding up things, see:

  • How can I uninstall iDVD '08 and install iDVD '06?

There's a reported bug among iDVD '08 users where burning
large projects are resulting in audio synch problems near the
    end of the burned DVD.
In other words, the audio slowly goes out of synch towards the
    end of burned projects.
This is a problem inherent with 'DVD '08.
I tried uninstalling iDVD '08 and replacing with '06 but it doesn't
work. You try that and iDVD will not launch at all.
Even tried to partition my drive and install iLife '06 to the partition
but the system will not let me.
Anyone have a solution how to completely uninstall iLife '08
    components and install iLife '06?
    Thanks

I upgraded to iLife 08 from 06 (bad move). I couldn't install iMovie because my Mac is too old (must be Intel-based or comparable). iDVD didn't work--the document window was always black, even with a theme selected. The Virtual Band function in GarageBand did nothing whatsoever. I trashed the '08 applications, moved all Preferences files to my desktop, reinstalled iLife '06. Now, iDVD won't launch--just flashes the menu bar and exits back to the Finder. So, I have several DVD projects on my system that I cannot finish because I cannot reinstall iLife '06 (like the originator of this problem, "How can I uninstall iDVD '08 and install iDVD '06?") I hope someone has an answer as this is frustrating and costly to my small business.

  • How can I get Flash Player and install it?

    I29/Aug/2010 17:37
    TO: Adobe Forum
I am running Windows XP Home, and using Mozilla Firefox 3.6.8 as my browser.
When I go to download and install the latest version of Flash Player, the ONLY option I get is to quit. In other words, I cannot download and install Flash Player. This even occurs at Adobe's own website.
How can I get Flash Player and install it?
    Thank you in advance.
    Sincerely,
    Barry Karas

First, you can manually download the installer here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/
Second. On both my Mac (OS 10.6.4) and My PC (Vista Home Premium) I have had nothing but trouble with Firefox 3.6.8 and Flash player, Flash apps and Flash sites that require access to web cam or microphone or both.
The last time Flash Player worked well with Firefox was 3.6.4, but I uninstalled 3.6.8 and went all the way back to 3.0 on both systems.
Just a heads up. If you download the manual installer, and it still doesn't work, it ISN'T the Flash Player. It's Firefox. IE, Opera and Safari all work with it.
Go to oldversion.com and get an older build of Firefox, uninstall 3.6.8, install the older one, go to Tools, and Options and turn off automatic checking for updates, so it doesn't try to take you back the the 3.6.8 "busted @$$ joint" that doesn't work worth poo.
Maybe when they release 3.7, Firefox will have their act together with Adobe and Flash Player.

  • Can you do an archive and install from a download update?

I upgraded to Tiger and 10.4.4 came on the disc I bought. I'm running into some problems w/ utilities that I have and would like to do an archive and install from the 10.4.10 download. The only option is an easy install though.

    Welcome to the forums!
You cannot Archive & Install from a downloaded update. You need to do an Archive & Install from your 10.4.4 DVD, then download and run the 10.4.10 Combo Updater.

  • Can I do an archive and install of Leopard on Leopard?

When I first upgraded, I chose the simple upgrade option. But now I'm having performance issues, and I'm wondering if it would help to do a cleaner install. In the alternative, I need to learn how to back up my applications and documents and perform a clean install from scratch.
I'm a bit frustrated. I switched in March from Windows to Apple because I no longer wanted to be locked in mortal combat with my computer. Before I did the upgrade, I was very happy with my iMac, and I want to be happy again. I'm thinking that maybe I didn't do a good install, and that a "do over" would help.
Please, if you know what you're talking about, I would be grateful for any advice you can give me. Thank you.

Once, you sort out your problems, Get a bootable, external HD, and make a bootable backup/clone before upgrading/updating and ensure that works like the original. That allows you to revert to the previous good state without having to reinstall anything. Then, peruse these

  • How can I syncronize my iPhone and install iCloud desktop with this Vista OS

Hi, my laptop is running on Windows VISTA. Is there anyway I can syncronize my iPhone and install iCloud desktop with this OS or anything to maximize use of my iPhone and PC together.

None of the Canadian carriers offer unlocking, and ONLY the carrier the phone is locked to could unlock it, so you're stuck with Fido.
And is there anyway to install themes to my phone without jailbreaking it
    No.

  • How can I disable windows firewall and install cluster software and its service using unattended.xml file?

    platform: 2008r2
services which need install: MSDTC Service, Windows Cluster Service, SQL Cluster

    Hi,
I am not quiet understanding your question, could you clarify your question, as far as I know, an answer file is an XML-based file that contains setting definitions and values
to use during Windows Setup. In an answer file, you specify various setup options, including how to partition disks, the location of the Windows image to install, and the product key to apply. You can also specify values that apply to the Windows installation,
such as names of user accounts, display settings, and Internet Explorer favorites. The answer file for Setup is typically called Unattend.xml.

  • Latest version 3.620 has caused my old imac g5 to grind to a halt! time travelor won't let me go back to previous version; how can I get previous version and install it?

after downloading latest firefox my old imac g5 gives me a color wheel after every couple of keystrokes like the computer is choking to death. I have cleared cache, cookies, you name it, nothing will make the computer function anymore, it is almost useless it is so slow. I need to get back to the previous version of firefox until I replace this computer, which will happen soon, but not soon enuff to deal with this

I would not think older versions are supported. Firefox 3.6.20 will be a security fix and should hopefully not be expected to cause problems.
I am not a Mac user and do not know the likely spec of a G5 but obviously it worked previously, have you tried it in [[safe mode]]. (but do not make changes, just click on continue.)

  • Boot problems - can I "Archive and Install" to back-up and then reformat?

    Hi all!
I'm having booting problems with my PowerBook 15".
I've ran the hardware/disk utility tests and everything seems fine. The problem is, I get a blue-screen with the spinning sun-dial or sthing. It keeps spinning and spinning! I tried going into safe-mode, but it doesn't work!
My question is, can I do an "Archive and Install"... load a fresh copy of OS X on my PowerBook so that I can back-up my data? Would this work?
    Please help, thanks!

I took the risk and managed to install Tiger over my previous OS successfully! Afterwards, I backed up everything as fast as I could, and then did a Clean Install. Worked like a charm! haha..
However... after doing the Clean Install, I realised that I am UNABLE to install "Windows Media Player for Mac OX X" on to my machine!?!?! I downloaded "WindowsMediaInstaller.bin", and opened it with StuffIt Expander. StuffIt Expander just hung at the "Preparing" mode and says "Preparing..."
Anyone else has/had the same problem? Please help, as a number of online radio sites require Windows Media Player to run, and now I can't access them!! =(

  • Does "Archive and Install" really exists on the Snow Leopard install DVD  ?

Well, Mr Magoo really needs your help.
I have an iMac late 2009 edition and the Snow Leopard DVD installer discs.
Reading the little baby paper book manual that came with the discs and the iMac it says on page 54 that i can re-install Snow Leopard by choosing "Archive and Install" or "Erase and Install".
Mr Magoo just can't find that "Archive and Install" choice and have concluded that this is a very bad reprint of a manual from years long ago when it was possible to archive and install or it some joke by Apple.
Unfortunately my 90 days of phone talk to Apple has expired albeit the two year warranty under apple sometimes care program i purchased is still valid.
Help/suggestions on how i can get to do an Archive and Install with the Snow Leopard installer DVD that came with this iMac ?

    Dave Sawyer wrote:
You misunderstand what Carolyn wrote. In Snow Leopard, Apple engineered the installer so that any reinstallation over an existing copy is in essence an "archival" install in the sense that it replaces all the OS files while automatically preserving the applications and user settings, just as the old "archive and install" option did, though no longer with the option to not preserve the user settings. So all installations over an existing OS are in essence "archive and install", so Apple removed the extra, now-redundant option.
They also removed the "Erase and Install" option. The only way you get a "complete fresh" installation is if you use Disk Utility to erase the drive. Otherwise the 10.6 installer will install a new set of OS files but not remove your apps and user settings.
If you want to reinstall Mac OS X 10.6 and keep your applications and user settings and data, just do a normal installation over the existing one. If you want to do a completely fresh installation, either starting completely new or restoring user data from a backup, first run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and erase the drive.
Well, have you tried an Snow Leopard installation on top of a previously installed Snow Leopard.
I must really be an idiot in using the snow leopard installer.
I loaded the optical slot with the Snow Leopard DVD installer and after it opened up on the desk top i double clicked the install icon. That restarted my iMac.
When I launched the installer after selecting my "Language" and then going thru the customization ( for example I don't need all those foreign languages ) and then selecting the drive to carry out the installation the installation starts.
Upon completion all my third party applications were zapped and i only had the Apple applications. There was no "previous" system folder as there used to be in previous operating system installers.
So, honestly, I have no idea how you folks manage to make an Snow Leopard installation over a previously installed Snow Leopard whereby all the third party applications are still there.
Please tell me the steps i should take to make an "archival" install over top of a previously installed Snow Leopard that retains all third party applications.
After my install of Snow Leopard I had to re-install all my third party software applications which in my case are mainly midi/audio programs.

  • Archive and install help snow leopard 1.6.5

I've a macbook pro 2009 mid year model.
and i accidentally deleted this adobe air and after reinstalled..it was corrupted and my friend borrowed my mac...and he installed those cracked photoshops. and i now i want to get them off my computer.
I'm thinking about reinstalling the Mac OS? with a clean fresh one. but i don't want to lose all my iphotos, imovie, calendars, itune, music, movies and the photos in photo booth. is there anyways to keep them? I'm going on a trip really need to get it done in 9 more days.
I've read some forums about Archive and install ? but I've tried youtube for some tutor how to make a Archive and install ? but i couldn't find anything. or websites. please help me up.
my questions is pretty much. how do i make an Archive and install on my macbook, snow leopard 1.6.5 or keep every files, so i can reformat my macbook pro. (planning to update to the 1.6.6 after everything is done like reinstalled mac osx.)
    cheers

Snow Leopard no longer has Archive and Install. To keep your user data, clone backup your machine at least twice, and restore only the data you need after an erase and install.
Report your "friend" to http://www.apple.com/legal if you suspect them of having put illegal software on your machine. You don't know what else they might have messed up..

  • Archive and Install in Snow Leopard?

I'm currently running Snow Leopard, and would like to Archive and Install. While attempting to Archive and Install, I wasn't given an option, so I quit the installer before the operation went too far.
How do I perform an Archive and Install with Snow Leopard?

You seem a little confused about all this. You said you wanted to Archive & Install 10.6 to get a "mostly clean copy" of the system. That's exactly what just running the Snow Leopard installer again will do. An Archive & Install option would do that too, but (assuming it worked like the old one) it would also create a "Previous Systems" folder, move the old system to it, & deactivate it. There is no way to reactivate this archived previous system once deactivated, if that is what you were thinking -- it is just a way to preserve items that you might need to add back to the newly installed one later on, like third party extensions or a user folder if you opted not to preserve users during the A&I.
Note that you do not need to erase anything first unless you want to clean out everything, including user preferences, system settings, & anything else that might be causing the problem. This would be true even if an Archive & Install option was provided, since it doesn't clean out those things either.

  • Mac OS X to Mac OS X Server Archive and Install

I bought the Tiger Server Box and need to install it onto an iMac to serve as a non-mission critical server, but there is some data on it that I would like to avoid having to backup. Can I perform an archive and install installation of Mac OS X Server over Mac OS X, while preserving all of my data and settings?

You don't need to do an archive install. You can install OSX server right on top of an existing OSX Install.
It is documented on the server install disk what to do if installing on an existing osx installation.
I installed Panther Server some time ago onto an existing Panther OS. I did not need to boot from the server install disk. I just ran an installer package.
I am sorry I can't be more specific but its been over a year since I did a server install.
