I am assumming these DVDs are your own personal property and are NOT rented or borrowed DVDs.
Once again, assuming that you own these DVDs, I recommend using Mac DVDRipper Pro to extract the content from your PERSONAL DVDs. I have it installed on my computer and it rips DVD's at maximum speed and uses very little processing power.

2. Buy an external optical drive and use it to install Microsoft Office.
Both options work correctly. If you are going to use the optical drive once, use Remote Disc, but it will be much slower than using an optical drive connected to the computer

First, are you positive it is really not there? Have you looked in your iTunes folder in your Music folder, and in the media folders there? Do you see your media files?
If your media are gone it is a lot easier to restore from a proper computer backup. Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

Given that your answer to 1. is 'pre-installed' and 3. is 'No', I think the only thing to do is to take it to an Apple store (ideally the one you bought it from) and have them reinstall it for you.
The intended solution in cases like yours is that you should be able to reboot and install even a wiped disk by using Apple's servers over the internet (you do this by restarting with 'command-r' and choosing 'reinstall Lion'). However if this isn't working for you then you need to get the store to do it. Don't let them fob you off with 'go home and try again'. Have them do it in the shop (you're still covered by Applecare warranty so it should cost you nothing save the inconvenience of the trip and possibly leaving the machine there while they fix it).
A reinstall should leave all your own personal data and programs in place.
Note for future: when you get it fixed, first thing to do is buy a cheap external drive and start keeping a backup (either Time Machine or clone with Carbon Copy Cloner).

Usually, to copy photos from most phones, you either use a USB cable and connect the phone in USB Mass Storage (or disk) mode if the phone supports it. Then just drag and drop files from the phone disk that appears on the Mac desktop. Alternatively, if the phone has Bluetooth capability you send photos via Bluetooth using the File Manager of the phone (consult your phone manual on how exactly to do this), or using the "Bluetooth File Exchange" application on your Mac. When you start up Handbrake, you will need to identify the source that you are copying. I assume you have an Optical drive by which you can read the DVD. Then it is a matter of clicking on the various options for the copying process, especially insuring you know where the copied file will be. It wil be in an MP4 format, which can then be viewed by Quickplay or QuickTime.. It can be also be imported into iMovie, using the import function under the File menu.

Logical but it won't work - DVD player output will be a grey checkerboard pattern.
Apple apps prevent Airplay of DVD content at low level presumably for some copy protection reason.

The idea is that restarting it will reset the ports. This is not a common solution because ports usually work and do not require such attention. It is likely the port is defective. It may well be a poor contact.
I don't know what type of computer you have, but It would likely have Firewire ports as well, which will work just as well as USB. So, even if you have one less USB port than you want, you can make use of the Firewire port instead.
