  • How can I download Mountain Lion onto an external disk?

    Hello everyone
My macbook pro hard drive was failing and at a genius appointment the technician said I could either pay for them to do the replacement or do it at home, since it would cost me nearly three times less. I bought the hard drive which is physically installed but my mac was not working before the replacement so I couldnt create any copies of the content, sofware, etc which means that now I have no idea how to install the sofware again... I've read about downloading Mountain Lion off the Apple Store onto an external disk and then rebooting the Mac from the external disk but I cant use my apple ID on any other Mac that isnt mine so I'm totally lost... Any help, please?

I'm assuming the grey disks are installation CDs that came with the mac?
Correct. But since you're trying to get back to Mountain Lion, you don't need them. If you had created a Mountain Lion bootable flash drive from your original download, you could have started up to that and installed ML directly.
Since it appears you don't, than what you do need is a retail Snow Leopard disk. If you don't have one, it can be purchased directly from Apple for $20. Install that and update it to at least 10.6.6 to get the App Store app on the drive. Then you can login to your App Store account and retrieve and install Mountain Lion.

  • How can i download mountain lion, if it tells me it is damaged or not signed?

I recently bought Mountain lion and tried to download it the first time it went well, but due to a internet faiure the dowload was canceled when I tried to download it again I couldnt it said that it was either damaged or not signed... what does that even means!!!!! I want to download mountain lion as soon as possible!!!

Means you have a corrupted DL. All I can suggest is try again or post your issue to http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact.html?form=account and let them deal with this crappy delivery system.

  • HT1338 How do I download Mountain Lion?

My macbook runs on Intel Core 2 Duo and is version 10.5.8, when I try to update my software, it says there are no more updates for my computer. How can I download Mountain Lion?

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.

  • How can i get mountain lion reinstalled if my mac says apple id never purchased? hd failed 2 wks after wty expired, I am the original owner, i have done command-r

how can i get mountain lion reinstalled if my mac says apple id never purchased? hd failed 2 wks after wty expired, I am the original owner, put another hd in, done command-r & sys reinstalled, but it wanted to update & now am stuck. I don't mind paying for mountain lion; it is too far to get to an apple store. but, i only have one mac, so i cannot download with another mac. lots of other apple, but only one mac.

You will need to do a network recovery:
    Install Lion/Mountain Lion on a New HDD/SDD
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
    1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
    2. After DU loads select your external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

I do not have a high speed internet connection. How can I get Mountain Lion on a disk for install on my 24" Imac?

As long as you use your Apple ID to purchase it, I don't see why they wouldn't let you download the installer on one of their Macs and put it on a pocket drive.
Or, a friend with a high speed connection?
I agree with you about the delivery method, just trying to help you get what you want.

  • How do I download Mountain Lion?

I am currently running Leopard (OS X 10.5.8) and am having trouble finding where do download Mountain Lion.  The website says to download from the Mac App Store, but I don't have that.  How do I download Mountain Lion?

because I want to be able to create a bootable thumb drive.
Unfortunately, you can't do that with the App Store version. As mentioned, that version of ML will not work with your Mac as it will not contain the necessary hardware drivers. The App Store version is intended only for users upgrading from Snow Leopard or Lion.
You really can't make fully restorable boot copy of Mountain Lion. The Recovery Disk Assistant Csound1 linked to is as close as you can get. What you end up with is a bootable disk that behaves exactly the same as the Recovery partition. It's still not a full copy of the OS. Most of it will have to download from Apple's servers.
The only way to have a fully restorable copy of ML is to clone the entire drive to an external drive and leave it alone. Boot to that drive only when necessary to restore it to a hard drive you've replaced in your Mac, or as another drive to boot to when their's trouble with the main drive.

  • HT4854 How can I load Mountain Lion to multiple Macs

How can I load Mountain Lion to multiple Macs without downloading the huge 4Gb file to each machine?

I've never done that, but I don't see why it wouldn't. There is no verification or authentication keys in the installer.
If you need 20+ licenses*, then you might take a look at the volume licensing: http://www.apple.com/mac/volume-licensing/
It describes the same process I described.
    * I think 20 is the minimum. Not sure, though.

How do I download Mountain Lion to the other computers at my home without additional cost? I downloaded 10.8 to my main IMac but have two additional computers in my home.?

Install 10.6.8 on the other computers. Sign into the App Store with the same Apple ID used to purchase Mountain Lion. Click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. Locate your Mountain Lion purchase entry which will show an active Install/Download button to the right of the entry. Click on it to download to the computer. If you don't wish to download Mountain Lion twice, then do this:
    Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
As an alternative to the above you can try using Lion DiskMaker 2.0 that automates the process.

  • Can I download Mountain Lion now but install later

I made a " Qualifying purchases between June 11, 2012, and July 25, 2012 " so I have until August 24, 2012 to download Mountain Lion for free according to <http://www.apple.com/osx/uptodate/>
Can I download Mountain Lion before that deadline but install it later on?
I'd like to go from Lion to Mountain Lion when ML has nay initial bugs resolved.
    Thanks.

Yes, the installer downloads to the Applications folder, if after downloading it asks to continue to do the installation just close that dialogue.  Later, when you are ready to install click on the installer in the Applications folder and it will do its thing.

  • How do I download Mountain Lion for free?

I purchased my MBP in July last year. I need to create a bootable drive of OS. In the app store, it is not showing OSX Lion. There is only the option of downloading Mountain Lion, but that isn't free.
If I am correct, I am entitled to a free upgrade, right? How do I download Mountain Lion free of cost? I want to have a bootable drive at hand, just in case my MBP goes kaput, like it did about 10 days back.
    Any help would be appreciated.

No, unfortunately that was the Up-To-Date Program and I think you're a bit late for that. Right now ,the only available DL is Mountain Lion and it's no longer free.
