How can I eliminate the search field in the new tab page?

I just started using the default FF new tab page, and would like to eliminate the search field just above the tiles.
Is there a way to do this without using CSS?

Hello, I've recently installed Firefox on my new PC after giving Chrome yet another chance (I've had bad experiences with it) and after seeing crashes everywhere I just gave up. The about:newtab page shows pages that you have visited. So if you visit a page by clicking a bookmark then that bookmark will become a history item and will thus appear in one of the tiles on the about:newtab page.
If you want then you can customize the tiles and drag bookmark (and history) items in a specific tile to pin that web page to that tile.
You set the number of rows and columns that appear on the about:newtab page by modifying these prefs on the about:config page via a double-click.

How can I eliminate the "new tab" when I open Firefox to my preset Home Page?

I have Firefox installed on a desktop and a netbook. On the desktop, when I launch Firefox it takes me to my homepage, and that is the only tab open. On the netbook, it opens to the homepage correctly, but there is also a second, blank tab, carrying the header "New Tab", just as though I had clicked on the "New Tab" icon in the toolbar. Since my homepage is a specialized search engine which opens each result in a new tab of its own, having the blank one already in place is annoying. How do I stop it from opening on launch?

Make sure that there isn't a pipe symbol appended to the home page setting.

How do I keep the new tab page thumbnails visible even after deleting my browser history?

Every time I delete my browser history, I notice thumbnails of my pinned sites on the new tab page disappear. Is there a way around that; or something that can be done so it doesn't occur in future versions of Firefox?

Current Firefox versions use a separate thumbnails folder to store those images, so clearing the cache should no longer make them disappear. 
However clearing the history will prevent any slots from retaining the URL. 
If you want specific pages to show on the about:newtab page then you can drag a bookmark or history link into a slot to pin a web page.

I did not change settings, or download a new version of Firefox. it just stopped working. There are other scenarios where it does still work (for example, if I want to open a link on a web page, I can right click and open the link in a new tab), but if I simply want to have multiple websites open at once on my PC, I am forced to have multiple versions of Firefox open, as my New Tab option seems to be disabled or something. After Yahoo Toolbar stowaway-ed onto my computer, it changed my new tab page to Yahoo search, and I can't change it back.

Every time I open Firefox to my Google home page, StartNow is also in the tool bar. How do I stop this?
I might also say that Search| Firefox Help is also there and is redundant when "help" is also in the tool bar above.

I don't want to get rid of a tool bar per se. It's the fact that every time I open Firefox to my Google home page, I get a line-up of three pages: Google, Search|Firefox Help and Start Here under the tool bar that shows File------Help. This doesn't happen with IE. Then when I try to close, I always get the question of whether I want to close three tabs. It's just a nuisance.
