How can I empty trash?

I have a huge amount of stuff in my trash.  How do I empty it without using the finder?  I have tried a number of times but my iMac crashes when trying to empty.  I am running snow Leopard on intel based my circa late 2008 iMac.

Usually rebooting clears it so you can empty the trash, otherwise:

  • How can I empty .trashes on my win2003 server automatically?

    Hello,
We have to use win2003 server for some of our macs running 10.4.11. The volumes are mounted via smb. Obviously the win server does not delete the files in the .trashes folder, although the trash on the osx desktop is emptied. Does anyone know how to make win2003 delete this when emptying the local trash?
    Regards,
    Stefan

Hi Stefan, welcome to discussions. Maybe just deleting them is an option?
With the share mounted, you could try something like this from terminal a Mac.
    sudo find /Volumes/nameof_smbshare/ -name '.Trashes'
    and see what that finds.
    This command
    sudo find / -name '.Trashes*' -exec rm {} ;
should find and delete the .Trashes, so don't use without testing for unexpected results.
    I used to use this
    find <SMB_SHARE> -name ".DS_Store" -exec rm {} ;
to find and remove the .DS_Store rubbish before they came out with /usr/sbin/dot_clean
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers.

  • How can I empty trash from outboard Time Machine back up hard drive?

I cannot wempty the trash from my outboard Time Machine Hard Drive. I keep getting error messages.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X can only restore data to the drive where Time Machine backed up files from.
If you want to restore files from the Time Machine backup onto an external drive, your only option is to access to the Time Machine drive manually (open a Finder window and choose your Time Machine drive in the Finder sidebar), navigate through its folders and copy the files you want to the external drive

How can I empty my trash email. There is no delete or delete all option after the emails are highlighted from the edit option. This is on an i phone 4 running on ios 7.1.2

I have 7 email accounts on my phone. If I tap EDIT while viewing the Trash folder in any of them I see "Mark All" on the left and "Delete All" on the right. If you tap any message, however, the legends go away.

  • How can I empty anApple e-mail program mailbox.  I have thousands of message I wish to delete, but am unable to do so.  Any suggestions?

How can I empty an Apple e-mail program mailbox.  I have thousands of message I wish to delete, but am unable to do so.  I open the e-mails on my laptop, so I don't usually need to open them on the iMac.  Whenever I use select all, and the move to trash, they always seem to reappear again.  Prospectively, I know I can change the e-mail settings in preferences, but that doesn't help get rid of what is already there.  Any suggestions?

You mention 2 computers. Not sure how one relates to the other. Are the messages on one and not the other?
Are they in the Inbox, or another local folder you created? If a local folder, delete the folder.
Do you have anything used to sync messages between the 2 computers? If so, disable it.
Select the messages and choose Delete instead of moving to the trash.
If that doesn't work, rebuild the mailbox, quit Mail and reopen and try again.
If all fails, delete the account from the computer. Since it is POP, when you re-add the account, there won't be any messages to download.

  • Can't empty trash error -8003

I am trying to empty the trash on my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.8. When I try to empty the trash using the "secure empty" button on the trash window (or the menu bar) I get error code -8003. What does this mean and how can I empty the trash?

Try holding down the option button while trying to delete the Trash. If that doesn’t work, here is some more information.

  • Help-can not empty trash due to localized.rsrc file

I have dumped all of the contents of my cloned backup hard drive to the trash. Usually I can empty it w/ no problem. However, it will now permit me to empty only part of the contents, and returns a message that it is stopped because the item "Localized.rsrc" is in use. When I use spotlight to find this glitch it shows me that Localized.rsrc is a Unix exe file in the following location: Library/Frameworks/Stuffit.framework/Versions/A/Resources/English.|proj'
I tried the suggestions from this forum at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2313873&#2313873 with no success. How can I empty the trash and get on with my life? Thank you!
    Bob

If I were you I would put the Palm stuff back where it came from, that is drag it out of the trash and onto your backup drive, and then empty the trash. This would at least get everything else out of the trash. You could then try the Terminal remove command on the Palm folder:
sudo rm -R [drag the Palm folder here]
Hit return and enter your password. The command would look something like this:
    Tiger:~ francine$ sudo rm -R /Volumes/BackUpDrive/PalmWhatever/
    Password:
Does that return an error message?

  • How do I empty trash after deleting music, apps and photos from my iPhone to make more room for upgrading to iOS 8.1?

How do I empty trash after deleting music, apps and photos from my iPhone to make more room for upgrading to iOS 8.1?  It says I don't have enough room to upgrade so I have deleted some of everything but do not see an improvement in my storage space. Help?

    No need to empty anything.
You can update by connecting your phone to iTunes on your computer. This way you bypass the space limitations.
    Good Luck

  • Can't empty trash in OSX10.6.8. Used Trashit unsucessfully. If I run sudo rm -ri ~/.Trash, terminal crashes

Can't empty trash in OSX10.6.8. Used Trashit unsucessfully. If I run sudo rm -ri ~/.Trash, terminal crashes. PowerMac G-5

This should do the job without all the Ys. BUT you must be 100% certain you have entered the command EXACTLY as written below. One typo and you could lose all the data in your user. Copy/paste only and TRIPLE check it's entered properly in Terminal. The -f option, instead of the -i option will force empty and delete immediately. No questions. (rm is remove/delete, -r is everything inside the folder, -f is force, no questions)
    sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash
There is a single space between sudo and rm
                                               "          rm and -rf
                                               "        -rf and ~/.Trash
    NO SPACES IN  ~/.Trash
It may take a while, depending on how many items are being deleted. You'll know it's done when you get a new $ sign prompt.

  • Emailing Excel sheets-can't empty trash

I notice anytime I send someone an Excel spreadsheet & then dump that excel into trash I can't empty trash, why is this? I close down all excel worksheets. I even trash the sent mail that had the excel attachment. Why does it think there's still an open Excel running? Is there a simpler solution then having to use Mac Janitor or Onyx everytime I do this?

Sometimes the Mail application will hold up the process. I can't explain why, but next time try quiting Mail when you have that problem. Then you should be able to empty the trash.
